Hi I'm working on the pomodoro clock app and was wondering if anyone's willing to take a look at it for me or help with any tips/suggestions. I seem to have gotten it to countdown, but it starts counting down from 0 to -1, -2, etc. without updating the minutes and I think I've spent way too long trying to figure it out. Thanks in advance. https://codepen.io/tbc13315/pen/MmMyqe

@tbc13315 your seconds always seem to start at 0, you should assign the value of the session length

@CentropyIT Thanks for replying. So should the seconds start at 60 then and then count down from there I guess? I put it at zero because I didn't want the timer to show a 60 in the seconds place.

@tbc13315 if it's at 0 and you need to decrement again, you should reset it to 59 and decrement the minutes instead
Jan Shah
@JanShah
Jun 25 2017 00:29
@tbc13315 you have to format the time so it shows 00, 01 etc for all single digits. That's accomplished by writing a function that takes the number and returns a formatted value (a bit of jiggling about, it's easy). I think the number should start at whatever the timer is and go down to 0.

@r1chard5mith Ah ok I see now what I'm doing wrong. Thanks both!!! One more question though unrelated to the countdown bit. When I click the stop/reset button it doesn't seem to clear the timer window. Here's what I had to stop the timer function:

Hello, I'm working on the random quote generator. I have the basics working just fine in my Atom editor, but when using codepen.io it doesn't seem to let jQuery work. I think it has something to do with the http call as it gives the "blocked loading mixed active content" message. https://codepen.io/lwood54/pen/QgqbmN

Liam Docherty

I tried this in terms of the text CSS but it has made it even worse. .loadingtxt {
font-family: arial;
font-size: 1.5rem;
color: white;
text-align: center;
margin-left: auto;
display: table-cell;
vertical-align: middle;
margin-right: auto;
}
@Taslack I haven't tired overriding it but that's a good point I will look into that now.
Clinton Shepard
@Taslack
Jun 25 2017 02:00
@ldocherty1 Or you can just fidget with your css to get the loadingtxt class to fall below n2j-loading-video. Its just the siblings do not inherit properties from each other, but children with inherit properties from the parent.

@clarken1996 in developer tools you can see what all of the classes and id's do in your html page. You can also edit, add styles, do all kinds of stuff. Right click on an element you want to see the style of, and click inspect. from there your understanding will increase rapidly

@clarken1996 bootstrap is just a grid system that makes your page responsive. So it can resize the page(grid) when you change the size of the screen. You can look at the bootstrap document.

when I poll the weather service, they return a condition code. they provided this json file, which matches condition codes to text for the weather, a number for the icon to use, and other stuff. so I have to search through an object of objects, looking for a "code" key that matches my number, then copy the "icon" value for image file name. They provide 2 directories of images, on day, other night.
all using the same numbers for the same weather.
I'd like the day/night text in the json too, but if I can get one, I can get all.
I haven't had luck yet with $.each(objects,function whatever

@CentropyIT no, because that's only one of the objects
look in a browser. it's an object that contains objects. one for each code.
It's the proper way of traversing it that I haven't figured out.
Jan Shah
@JanShah
Jun 25 2017 03:24
you can directly call object.condition.icon for the image
this is all objects in objects. you can iterate through all of them using Object.keys to get the key and then use forEach or any loop to go through all the values

Jean-Paul Sauve

@CentropyIT yes, but I meant the condition.json
I did it, btw
that object only has 2 objects, and I don't have to search for anything. In condition.json they're numbered, but not with the numbers I'm looking for. So if a for loop, using the index to look at each object is the right way, I can do that. I figured that there would be something like $.each that has an optimized way.

@theproactivedev I'm not at that point yet, and I'm not sure how it's supposed to work, but it's fun clearing it, and then seeing if you can click fast enough to bring it back to "life"
Ken Haduch
@khaduch
Jun 25 2017 04:22
@theproactivedev - it looks like there isn't a way to "stop" the game? I have it so that I'm trying to click some new dots on the board and it just keeps flashing one that I click and then it goes away? Are you using setTimeout? I see a setInterval there, I guess...
@theproactivedev - what is it that you are thinking is not behaving correctly? I'm guessing that you're not stopping the action, or perhaps starting multiple timers?
Eirin Gonzales
@theproactivedev
Jun 25 2017 04:24
@jp-sauve Haha. I got some problems with that.
@khaduch I'm not using setTimeout but yes, setInterval. Every time I click the board. I'm using the clearInterval method to stop it.
@khaduch I'm not sure if how I change their state based on their neighbors is right. Because in other code, their three cells are always three cells. And mine becomes four.
Ken Haduch
@khaduch
Jun 25 2017 04:26
@theproactivedev - so any click should stop the board?
Eirin Gonzales

@theproactivedev you probably have to clear all intervals, there may be multiple
Eirin Gonzales
@theproactivedev
Jun 25 2017 04:29
@CentropyIT Where should I declare the variable for the id for the interval?
renderGrid() {
this.interval = setInterval(function() {
this.processCells();
this.forceUpdate();
}.bind(this), 100);
}
Ken Haduch
@khaduch
Jun 25 2017 04:29
@theproactivedev - I think that I see one problem in that if I click the start button, rather "play" button multiple times, then it gets to the point where it looks like multiple timers are running.
Jan Shah

@khaduch Every time I call the function renderGrid, will it always have a new this.interval?

renderGrid() {

this.processCells();
this.forceUpdate();
}.bind(this), 100);
}

@CentropyIT Do I have to use clearInterval even when I pause the game?
Ken Haduch
@khaduch
Jun 25 2017 04:35
@theproactivedev - it looks like it, you have to handle this in a way similar to the pomodoro clock - you have to prevent multiple interval timers from starting, because then things go out of control. You should test to see if there is an interval timer running, and prevent the start of a second one.
I don't really see where you are initializing this.interval? You should start with it set to a value 0 and then when you are attempting a setInterval call, you can test whether or not it has a zero value, if it does have a zero value, you can start a timer, and if it doesn't, then don't start another one. When you stop the interval timer, then clear the this.interval variable back to 0 so that you're ready to start again.
Jan Shah
@JanShah
Jun 25 2017 04:35
@theproactivedev you're not setting state correctly
looks like state is set once and then forgotten in favour of javascript
and then forceupdate running to keep it all going. I still can't see why the interval is being called multiple times
@theproactivedev I rewrote mine about 5 times before settling on the last, imperfect one. I've got a similar problem but not as severe
I'd strongly suggest starting from scratch, just for the practice
Eirin Gonzales
@theproactivedev
Jun 25 2017 04:39
@khaduch Yes, yes. Idk where should I initialize the this.interval. But I'll try that right now.
Ken Haduch
@khaduch
Jun 25 2017 04:40
@theproactivedev - you should create the variable somewhere in your state section, perhaps? I don't see any place other than in the calls to setInterval and clearInterval that you are declaring that variable. Create it somewhere and initialize it, then you will be referencing the variable correctly.

@theproactivedev

@CentropyIT I also have problem re-rendering. Idk if I should use setState or not. I've read in other forums that you don't always use setState. And if I use setState, sometimes it's not re-rendering. But I'll try this again. Thanks!

Is there a way to change "active" states on my Navbar without JS?
By scrolling
Jean-Paul Sauve
@jp-sauve
Jun 25 2017 05:32
maybe you could use a very tall image in a div with overflow hidden, and the image changes the background of your buttons as you get to the right part of your page. like a very tall odometer guage.
maybe that wouldn't work I don't think it would scroll with the page.
I'd like to change my previous answer to I don't know.

I would try to tie in the Pomodoro tomatos into the function but then again that might just be my graphic design BA speaking, not sure, lol?

Can someone explain what values should i check for par and strokes to get the relevant message ?
Jim Tryon
@jimtryon

@karolosk You basically want to use the two variables par and strokes and write conditional statements to return the correct string
Nitin Chandran Nair
@NitinNair89
Jun 25 2017 10:33
@KshitijaaJaglan You cannot set an image's opacity. And the value of opacity lies in the range 0-1 (0.5 = 50%). I suggest you use font-awesome icons instead of those images. You can do a lot more. :)

});

i know, and it sucks cause i cant use ES6 template literals or backticks :(

all I know is (for the double quote inside a double quote or single-single" if you want to use/show a double quote inside a double quoted string, you use the escape sequence character for the double quote \" and the same goes for a single quote. e.g. " \"double quoted string \" " this will output "double quoted string"

@adamfaraj You may want to take a look at jQuery's .data() API if you're concerned about hitting the DOM.
All data set with that API is stored by jQuery in a local variable, not in the DOM itself.

@SuitedHound the container-fluid class will extend all the way to each side of the screen. If you want a narrower gray background inside of a container-fluid, apply the background-color to a <div> inside the container-fluid and give it a width. Or, use the jumbotron class in bootstrap.

@Pagnito here is the api i am trying to use.
Pagnito
@Pagnito
Jun 25 2017 22:37
k im looking at it now
i havent done api since doing the twitch.tv, but as i can see there isa few things wrong, before fixing ur call
i never seen anyone say get()
i dunno if u can do that
usually its $.getJSON(url, callback function)
u dont have a call back function
its the function that executes on the fetched data
Pagnito
@Pagnito
Jun 25 2017 22:43
once that is properly written, all u have to do is fix the api call, i remember always having the problem with the CORS

@Pagnito ahhhh okay i will look at that then
Pagnito
@Pagnito
Jun 25 2017 22:43
i gotta re-remember how to fix that
and i would recomend writing ur code in the script section, it helps debug ur code
also when u leave unidentifed variables it will stop executing ur code at that point

I was wondering how can I put my bootstrap buttons in a vertical line going down in the middle of my webpage? I tried using vertical-align: top;
but it didn't work.

My site code.

Here is the html to the buttons I want to go down one after the other in a vertical line in the middle of the webpage.

<ul class="list-inline intro-social-buttons">
   <li>
      <a href="devpage.html" class="btn btn-primary btn-lg outline rotateInUpLeft animated"><i class="fa fa-linkedin fa-fw"></i> <span class="network-name">Web Development Portfolio</span></a>
   </li>
   <li>
      <a href="gfxdesign.html" class="btn btn-primary btn-lg outline rotateInUpLeft animated"><i class="fa fa-linkedin fa-fw"></i> <span class="network-name">GFX Design Portfolio</span></a>
   </li>
   <li>
      <a href="about.html" class="btn btn-primary btn-lg outline rotateInUpLeft animated"><i class="fa fa-linkedin fa-fw"></i> <span class="network-name">About Me</span></a>
   </li>
   <li>
      <a href="contact.html" class="btn btn-primary btn-lg outline rotateInUpLeft animated"><i class="fa fa-linkedin fa-fw"></i> <span class="network-name">Contact Me</span></a>
   </li>
</ul>

As a side note if anyone could also help me with this it would be much appreciated.

How can I adjust the width of how long the <hr class="content-divider"> is but I need it to be responsive. I don't want the line to go past from where the buttons on each side end.

does any one know why the twitch api won't work? I have just started the project and it seems like the api doesn't work. The freecodecamp example project doesn't work, so theres probably something wrong with the api.

Anyway.. Im stuck at Nesting for Loops...
trying to build a for loop for multiply confuse me :/
Gulsvi
@gulsvi
Jun 25 2017 23:29
It can get hard to keep track of multiple loops
CallMeOrange
@EgnaroDev
Jun 25 2017 23:29
Yeah, I dont even understand this both loops
This is an example from challenge
var arr = [
  [1,2], [3,4], [5,6]
];
for (var i=0; i < arr.length; i++) {
  for (var j=0; j < arr[i].length; j++) {
    console.log(arr[i][j]);
  }
}
I want to understand it first
Gulsvi
@gulsvi
Jun 25 2017 23:31
I think it helps to look at arrays vertically sometimes:
var arr = [
  [1, 2],
  [3, 4],
  [5, 6]
];
CallMeOrange
@EgnaroDev
Jun 25 2017 23:31
yeah... pasting it made it a row
Gulsvi
@gulsvi
Jun 25 2017 23:36
@MCTwoDigitZero another console.log could help too:
for (var i=0; i < arr.length; i++) {
  console.log(arr[i]);
  for (var j=0; j < arr[i].length; j++) {
    console.log(arr[i][j]);
  }
}
Then you see:
[1, 2]
1
2
[3, 4]
3
4
[5, 6]
5
6
CallMeOrange
@EgnaroDev
Jun 25 2017 23:37
@SkyC0der lol that is exactly what I did
But console.log dont even help in challenge
Sorry I was helping my Dad
