Baibhav Gautam
@baibhavx

working through different conditions
Waqas Abbasi

Jun 27 2017 00:26
hmm
oh
then that would involve crazy loads of If statments
Baibhav Gautam
@baibhavx
Jun 27 2017 00:26
Not necessarily
you definitely dont want to hard code for each and every situation
but think about the corner squares, the middle square and the between square
is this what u mean?
^^ It's beatable, but hard to beat if done right with that basic strategy
Waqas Abbasi
@Waqas909
Jun 27 2017 00:28
yea but doesn't that go back to having lots of If statments?

Jun 27 2017 00:34
@Waqas909 basically, you need to write a function to detect if there is checkmate oppotunity for you (the AI) or the human
then a a function to detect trap setting oppotunity for both

Mixed Content: The page at 'https://codepen.io/freeCodeCamp/full/bELRjV/' was loaded over HTTPS, but requested an insecure script 'http://ipinfo.io/json?callback=angular.callbacks._0'. This request has been blocked; the content must be served over HTTPS.
I checked firefox and it's actually fine in Firefox
Dan Couper
@DanCouper

It's browser dependent, you're trying to make a request to an HTTP endpoint from HTTPS and Chrome for example will not like tyat, it thinks it's insecure and want you to use HTTPS

Technically, the <p> element needs to be outside the <ul> element in your HTML - if you want some code feedback too :)

@kalzimonium It's a pain to get those to look similar across all browsers. To see how bootstrap styles their <input> elements, search for .form-control in their .css file: https://cdnjs.cloudflare.com/ajax/libs/twitter-bootstrap/3.3.7/css/bootstrap.css
Mimic what they do, and you'll be able to style your <input> elements similarly. Justin used some tricks to avoid so much extra code - like making the background color match the default borders and outlines of <input> elements

Dylan Mayers
@DylanMayers
Jun 27 2017 07:41
@jimtryon I just feel a bit overwhelmed by the project as a whole i suppose, even though it's probably quite easy for many people. I don't feel i know enough about bootstrap to use make the page function the way it's meant to for instance creating the links the take you to a certain area of the page or creating thumbnails of projects. Is it normal to feel like you haven't got a strong grip of bootstrap at this stage of the project or have I missed something?
Jim Tryon
@jimtryon
Jun 27 2017 07:43
@DylanMayers It’s completely normal man to have that feeling that you are overwhelmed because it’s something new. You want to break it up into small steps. User stories help to do that. If bootstrap is where you don’t feel so comfortable yet, I recommend spending some time on the bootstrap website and reading the documentation.

Screenshot from 2017-06-27 14-39-20.png
Hi everyone!
I'm building my tribute page for freeCodeCamp. I have a big image on the top of the page. I want it to cover the entire screen(or at least the major portion of it) regardless of the device used to view the page. So far, I've achieved it using background-image and background-size: cover property. But when viewed on small devices, the width doesn't adjusts, so only a portion of the image is shown(image attached).
What's the possible solution here?
@willwaymel something like
background: url(images/bg.jpg) no-repeat center center fixed;
  -webkit-background-size: cover;
  -moz-background-size: cover;
  -o-background-size: cover;
  background-size: cover;

Umm..I working locally. It's not on codepen.
But I can upload it.
will take some time though
here is the css for the div:
.hero {
    background-image: linear-gradient(rgba(0,0,0,0.1), rgba(0,0,0,0.6)), url("../images/quincy larson1.png") center center fixed;
    background-size: cover;
    position: relative;
    padding: 0;
}

@faahim to solve this issue you have to make it small screen friendly and to do this in your css need to use @media (max-height :768px){ customise it your whole page again by reducing your browser window similar to a mobile device.

Stuck on the Random Quote Machine. Got the HTMLand CSS pretty much setup, but not sure where to go beyond that.
kirbyedy
@kirbyedy
Jun 27 2017 13:21
@kevinwr review the challenges on freecodecamp about accessing the array and creating random number, so if you create an array of quotes and use a random number to access the quotes you are pretty much done
or search the internet for a random quote api
Kevin
@kevinwr
Jun 27 2017 13:24
@kirbyedy is that what they want you to do? They don't really clearly define how to go about it. I wish they would provide some details on what to research to do the projects.
kirbyedy
@kirbyedy
Jun 27 2017 13:24
@kevinwr pretty much yea... its not a holding hand thing, they just push you over the cliff and you are on your own :D
read search ask
Gulsvi
@gulsvi
Jun 27 2017 13:29
@kevinwr Think of it like one of the basic algorithms - they don't tell you step by step how to solve them. They give you some methods to use and have you figure it out. The quote machine is the same. We've learned about arrays, we've learned about generating random numbers, we've learned about accessing elements in arrays by index, and we've learned how to use jQuery to add HTML to a web page.
We've also gotten an introduction to calling APIs, but that's where the research begins if you want to go that route for your quote machine. One of the more popular APIs gives you the code to use, and you can learn from that: https://quotesondesign.com/api-v4-0/
Kevin
@kevinwr
Jun 27 2017 13:35
So if I create an array, should I put that in an object? do I just create multi-dimentional arrays?
Gulsvi
@gulsvi
Jun 27 2017 13:37
@kevinwr You can make something similar to what we learned in the profile lookup challenge:
var contacts = [
    {
        "firstName": "Akira",
        "lastName": "Laine",
        "number": "0543236543",
        "likes": ["Pizza", "Coding", "Brownie Points"]
    },
    {
        "firstName": "Harry",
        "lastName": "Potter",
        "number": "0994372684",
        "likes": ["Hogwarts", "Magic", "Hagrid"]
    },
    {
        "firstName": "Sherlock",
        "lastName": "Holmes",
        "number": "0487345643",
        "likes": ["Intriguing Cases", "Violin"]
    },
    {
        "firstName": "Kristian",
        "lastName": "Vos",
        "number": "unknown",
        "likes": ["Javascript", "Gaming", "Foxes"]
    }
];
^^ Now, try to re-imagine that as a bunch of quotes with authors
Then you just look up random quotes and display their author alongside the quote text
Kevin
@kevinwr

Try to get it working with an API if you're up to it after trying the above - you'll see you can create a quote machine app in less than 10 lines of code :) very powerful, and a good intro to the weather project coming up next.
Kevin
@kevinwr
Jun 27 2017 13:45

I still don't quite understand what in the jesus an API is, despite watching several videos, and reading several websites on the topic. All I really understand is that it allows computers/programs/software to be able to communicate with each other.

I keep thinking "ooooook...well that doesn't really explain WHAT it is"

that's merely a very broad description of what it does
same type of thing with AJAX
and JSON
Eric Weiss
@eweiss17
Jun 27 2017 13:46
as far as i'm aware an api allows you to access a database
and return information
Whoever creates the api controls what information can be accessed and by who (via keys)
Kevin
@kevinwr
Jun 27 2017 13:47
I guess it can be, but that's not all it's used for (as far as I know).
Eric Weiss

and my clients want information, but i don't have time to always give it to them
just give them the info for the api and have them get it themselves

Jun 27 2017 13:53

@kevinwr This is where I think examples help the most. As others have said before it is just passing of information. For example, a weather API has all sorts of information on the weather. You can ask the weather api to give you weather information on specific location and the weather api will send you that information.

One way you can ask them to give you the information is by using an AJAX request and the format of the information is generally JSON.

Eric Weiss
@eweiss17

it also doesn't reveal the sources algorithms, or sources of information

The Skycons documentation (https://darkskyapp.github.io/skycons/) says "// if you're using the Forecast API, you can also supply strings: "partly-cloudy-day" or "rain"." I can get the Skycons working on lines 47-49 when I specifically input the icon. But if I swap that icon for the summary variable which is a string from the Dark Sky API call, the icons stop working. Everyone jumps to use that cross origin proxy sometimes, but it can take a very long time to proxy your requests.

When your web page is hosted over HTTPS (like on Codepen or Github), the APIs you use must support HTTPS

@divergentbilly No, this is not correct:

        $.getJSON(weatherData).done(function(data) {
            var weatherKey = '&appid=0f4ed8de35b6f8874bd6fbaf5b64e720'
            var weatherApi = 'http://api.openweathermap.org/data/2.5/weather?'
            var format = '&units=metric' //Default
            var WeatherData = weatherApi + 'lat=' + lat + '&lon=' + lon + format + '&appid=' + weatherKey;

Your variables that make up the weatherData variable are listed after the getJSON request that needs them.
And, weatherData vs. WeatherData (capitilization)

@SkyC0der the three transparent divs are suppoused be centered and responsive. no matter the size of the screen. right now when resizing to xs through col-12. the left div is offset by 3 col
@SkyC0der yes I've only applied to first. but when resizing the offset is still there when the div is supposed to take full row

@Dar0n it only says the following 2: User Story: I can view a tribute page with an image and text.

User Story: I can click on a link that will take me to an external website with further information on the topic. so as long as they are fulfilled that will be complete? Just that the example uses ordered lists and few other extras.

@zentech Help me visualize what you want. All three side by side on all screen sizes? Take up 50% of the screen on all screen sizes except on mobile where you want 100%?
Or, do you want them stacked vertically on some device sizes?
offset-3 will apply to mobile and larger screen sizes
There's offset-sm-3, offset-lg-3, etc. to have the offset only apply to specific screen sizes, for example

var apiURL = '';
function getLocation() {
if (navigator.geolocation) {
navigator.geolocation.getCurrentPosition(showPosition);
} else {
alert("Please allow your browser to get location");
}
}
function showPosition(position) {
latlong = position.coords.latitude + "," + position.coords.longitude;
apiURL = 'https://api.darksky.net/forecast/e58b52ad969325b30bf1707ab2a8bbb9/' + latlong;
console.log(apiURL);

$.getJSON(api_url, function(forecast) {
console.log(forecast);
});
};
getLocation();
});

@joshdaniell - looking good! One thing that is a little hazy (little weather joke...) is that the temperature units for the temperature that is being displayed are not shown. It's not such a big deal, but it would be clearer to display that, and the units for the wind speed, too? Also it might be a nice touch to display "good morning", "good afternoon", or "good evening" according to the time of day. But overall it looks like you got it going quite nicely and that's great!
@IggySmith - for the social icons on the left-hand picture, the webpage is getting blocked (either by the browser or CodePen? (Might be my browser ad blocker?) and the other links don't display anything. Perhaps if you added target="_blank" to each link so that it would open in a separate tab in the browser it would be better, rather than trying to open in the CodePen output frame?

Ken Haduch

@IggySmith yes, they open if you force a new tab, but not all computer users would think of doing that - I did shift+click on the links and they open in new windows. You just want to make the best user experience for anyone visiting the page.
@IggySmith - what kind of justification do you want? You have all "p" elements set to center justification? You can define a class for that text and override the alignment using the new class? Or take away the justification for <p> elements and make special classes for the places where you want center justification?

Ok I managed to pass this challenge, but I dont understand it at all..

function ourRandomRange(ourMin, ourMax) {

  return Math.floor(Math.random() * (ourMax - ourMin + 1)) + ourMin;
}

ourRandomRange(1, 9);

function randomRange(myMin, myMax) {

  return Math.floor(Math.random() * (myMax - myMin + 1)) + myMin;

}

var myRandom = randomRange(5, 15);
Math.floor(Math.random() * (max - min + 1)) + min; is just the way to get the number in a range?
