can anyone explain to me why when im trying to close the image tag it reads as a string instead of actually closing the tag?
$(document).ready(function(){
  $("#newQuoteBtn").on("click",function(){
    randomNum();
    $(".quote").html(<i class="fa fa-quote-left" aria-hidden="true"></i> + quotes[quoteNum].quote);
    $(".author").html("- "+quotes[quoteNum].author);

Hi, i'm new to this and i was trying to do a text clickable
But when i nest the <a> element inside a <h1> element it changes the color of my text and when i put my click on the text it's underlined, is there another way to do this?
iso
@iso1048
Jul 31 2017 00:33
@ThePineal probably best if you have the quote in a different element so that you dont have to keep inserting the fa icon each time the button is clicked. Also, on line 6 of your html, you have a random 'h2' within the opening of the i tag. I dont really know what the problem is with the button though sorry
ThePineal
@ThePineal
Jul 31 2017 00:34
@gothamknight yeah i found the random h2, the thing is the button was just working, i didnt even change the button, now its messed up :(
iso
@iso1048
Jul 31 2017 00:36

@lestairon in css:

a, a:hover, a:active, a:visited {
color: yourColor;
text-decoration: none;
}

does that work?

@ThePineal oh that sucks.
ThePineal
@ThePineal
Jul 31 2017 00:37
@gothamknight i tried putting it in to a different element before but the formatting got messed up up between the text that was already there and the h2 text

haven't tried it yet though :)

@Kowalatam how is it suppose to look?
Gulsvi
@gulsvi
Jul 31 2017 01:12
@Kowalatam For your grid system, the grid usually works best when you know how many items you'll have in each row. Since you don't know how many people will be online/offline or how many rows you need, you may want to get rid of the row/col classes and use set up each channel with a static width and display: inline-block in your CSS.

it works correctly before using the button to change the color, but not after

Gulsvi
@gulsvi
Jul 31 2017 01:32
@ThePineal jQuery Selectors don't need the pseudoselectors in them too. Use CSS for your hover effects, or use .on('hover', .on('mouseenter', .on('mouseleave', etc

Jul 31 2017 01:38
change it to like `(".btn-primary").on("hover")?
Gulsvi
@gulsvi
Jul 31 2017 01:38
correct, but you gotta use two functions with .on('hover')
one for the mouse over and another for the mouse out
It's usually much, much easier to do it with CSS unless you're running a bunch of code or a function on hover
ThePineal
@ThePineal
Jul 31 2017 01:40

if you dont mind, can you explain what this is?
just a local selector? or what?
Gulsvi
@gulsvi
Jul 31 2017 01:46
this refers to $('.showlink') in the example above
the item that triggered the hover event
ThePineal
@ThePineal
Jul 31 2017 01:47
i guess i dont know what .showlink is either
Gulsvi
@gulsvi
Jul 31 2017 01:47
.showlink refers to an element with class="showlink"
it's the example from that stack overflow link that most closely resembles what you're trying to do
(IMO)
ThePineal
@ThePineal
Jul 31 2017 01:48
i get that, im just wondering if the class showlink is completely arbitrary or if its something built in that i just dont know about

Does anyone know if it's possible to store multiple audio files in an array and reference them in the play() method? Seems it's required the create a var like so:
const soundTL = new Audio('https://s3.amazonaws.com/freecodecamp/simonSound1.mp3');
  const soundTR = new Audio('https://s3.amazonaws.com/freecodecamp/simonSound2.mp3');

Marianissimus
@Marianissimus

i think you have 2 options:
  1. using flex; you can make the items (divs) have 33% width (of the parent) and flex-grow: 1; (default) - try this first
  1. count the divs using js and something like: if (divs.number > 3) {create 2nd wrapper?}

@steamedapples basically the way I see the solution to the tic tac toe (without looking at any guides or help)
is putting the inputted answers into a 2d array
[][][],
[][][],
[][][]
then validating based on that identity matrix, if you fill up 3 1's then you win
steamedapples
@steamedapples
Jul 31 2017 12:46
so why would it only work for diagonals?
Eric Weiss
@eweiss17
Jul 31 2017 12:46
that is just the identity matrix
i had a problem on code fight that was validating an identity matrix
that is why i mentioned it
why i mentioned it was that a validated identity matrix is a 'win' in tic tac toe
Marianissimus

Eric Weiss
@eweiss17
Jul 31 2017 13:56
@Kowalatam i am going through my projects and making 2.0 versions where my goal is to have as elegant code as possible...

the fact that you have

$("#onButt").on("click", function(){

3x seems unnecessary

Elizabeth Paul
@Kowalatam
Jul 31 2017 13:58
@eweiss17 yeah, meant to change it into like a loop that checks which of the buttons get clicked
Eric Weiss
@eweiss17
Jul 31 2017 13:58

instead

$("button").on("click", function(event) {
    let buttonId = event.target.id;

will give you the button id that is clicked

Darth Skywalker
@AdiSkywalker
Jul 31 2017 13:59
@eweiss17 Another way to do that is simply
$("button").on("click", function(event) {
    let buttonId = this.id;

@zivce - twitchtv project looks good - just one question, on the selection of the "Offline" users, the first entry doesn't have the status "Offline" listed, but all of the others do? Or perhaps it is just the user "storbeck" - that seems to be consistent? And it seems that you are always fetching all of the information with new requests - once you have it stored locally, you could just filter the "Online" and "Offline" and "All" and redisplay from local data. But things look good with it - nice work!

@zivce - I guess that you could choose to do it either way, but in general, the less often you would go out to the web to fetch data that you have fetched and could store locally, the better. I suppose that you could make a case for someone changing status while a user is viewing your site - going from online to offline or vice-versa. My first thought, for this page, would be to locally store the data and just filter with the different selections. Maybe you're right - if the user stories indicate that you would always retrieve the latest status, then you need to do that. I might put a refresh button on there to get update info?

Jul 31 2017 21:14
@hifede Sorry, I didn't see your message. Grids align from left to right, so col-xs-8 means take up 8/12 of the screen, starting at the left. Use Column Offsets to center columns: http://getbootstrap.com/css/#grid-offsetting

@sabin20 It's hard to help without seeing your HTML, but with a .navbar from bootstrap, it would be like:
.line {
  visibility: hidden;
  margin: 0 auto;
  padding-top: 45px;
  border: 6px solid #FF3311;
  width: 50%;
}

.navbar:hover~.line {
  visibility: visible;
}

I guess you could also us a wrapper though - give <body> a background and then add the wrapper/container inside the body with the max/min width

@SkyC0der html didnt seem to work so i made a wrapper div for all the content, and it worked except as soon as i give my wrapper a backgruund color all the content becomes uninteractable
What the hell?
I completed kyu 7, honors used to be like 130+ but went up to 160+

@SkyC0der i dunno, as soon as i take off the background color everything works again O.o
the weird thing is, ill make the wrapper 100% wide and height
and it works
but with the background color it wont
fixed it
fuckd up on some z-indexes, my svg was covering the content
svg viewport
