Aug 04 2017 00:07
@MohNabil declare the variables in the document ready function, then assign them in the showPOsition function
Feel free to use any name for your function, you just have to pass those variables as arguments to the function
Then they'll be available in the function you call

hey guys, this might be a dumb question but, how do I access only the element that the user clicked on? should I use this.id paired with getElementById?
or would it be event.target?

@sabin20 set a width less than that of the parent div to use margin:auto i think
Trommelochse
@Trommelochse
Aug 04 2017 00:20
@sabin20 because it is a block element, and always fills the full width (if it's not floating)
if you want to center the images
just remove that margin property and add 'text-align: center;'

Aug 04 2017 00:28
@Trommelochse hmmm, I'm not sure if I used it right. https://codepen.io/AmitP88/pen/KvVmLb?editors=1010 I'm trying to get my program to where if a user clicks on X in the dialog box, then player = x. Then, when the user clicks on any empty column div (any empty cell), then that cell will be filled with an X from Player = x
I'm not sure if this is a scoping issue, to where Player = X (if user clicks X on dialog box) is not accessable within the turn function
Trommelochse
@Trommelochse
Aug 04 2017 00:29
@AmitP88 one second
first of all: there's no need to import your jquery in the HTML, codepen gives you easy access to any cdn you need
via the JS settings panel
apparently $.dialog() doesn't exist in newer jquery versions anymore
so you shouldn't use that at all
Amit Patel
@AmitP88
Aug 04 2017 00:34
oh ok
I found that on a tutorial site about custom dialog boxes
I'll refactor that though
Trommelochse
@Trommelochse
Aug 04 2017 00:35
for that Tic Tac Toe app
React is probably the easiest choice :D
Amit Patel
@AmitP88
Aug 04 2017 00:37
ah I see. I've been meaning to learn more React (only learned JSX so far), but I was advised to learn more advanced JS before doing so, since a lot of adv JS concepts are used in React
I wasn't sure whether or not to learn more of it before I finish the Front End cert
Trommelochse
@Trommelochse
Aug 04 2017 00:38
React is quite functional, and ES6 makes it very lean
if you wanna use jquery on that tic tac toe app
It's probably easiest to work with a global state constant
Amit Patel
@AmitP88
Aug 04 2017 00:40
hmmm I still have to learn ES6 lol
although I've read online that ES8 is coming out soon if it isn't out already
Trommelochse
@Trommelochse
Aug 04 2017 00:41
screw taht naming convention.... even ES6 is not natively supported by browsers yet
Amit Patel
@AmitP88
Aug 04 2017 00:41
when you say global state constant, do you mean a global variable?
lol I was thinking the same thing, ES6 hasn't been out that long has it?
Trommelochse
@Trommelochse
Aug 04 2017 00:43
yes, one global variable, lets say const app = { }
in this constant you store all the data that affects the game
Amit Patel
@AmitP88
Aug 04 2017 00:46
lol I just found that Reacts official doc teaches how to make a tic tac toe game
Trommelochse
@Trommelochse
Aug 04 2017 00:46
yepp, it's a bit confusing when you are new to react
BUT - their algorithm to determine a winner is insane :D

lol wow
Trommelochse

Amit Patel
@AmitP88
Aug 04 2017 00:48

Amit Patel
@AmitP88
Aug 04 2017 00:49
that solution seems confusing to me lol
I actually got contacted by a CTO on linkedin about how comfy I was using React + Redux. I told him I wasn't comfortable yet since all I know atm is JSX, but he told me once I learn it more, to reach out to him since they plan on hiring more devs in the upcoming months. So I've been trying to get better at JS so that I can dive into it more

@gsea4 would you need to add parameters when you declare the getLocation function, then pass long and lat to it when you invoke the function? Because inside the getLocation function, lat and long variables seem to be out of scope...? not too sure - just a thought
gsea4
@gsea4
Aug 04 2017 04:40

@stanley-su i know how to use opacity, i just don't know in my CSS what selector to select since my background image is explicity set in javascript
function changeBackground(h) {
    console.log(h);
    if(h < 6 || h > 18) {
        document.getElementsByTagName('html')[0].style.background = "#5fc6ee url('images/nightImage.jpg') no-repeat center center fixed";
        document.getElementsByTagName('html')[0].style.backgroundSize = "cover";
    } else {
        document.getElementsByTagName('html')[0].style.background = "#5fc6ee url('images/dayImage.jpg') no-repeat center center fixed";
        document.getElementsByTagName('html')[0].style.backgroundSize = "cover";
    }

hi guys i have a probably stupid question, but I'm trying to center some text and wrap it in an a tag. However when I do that, the a tag takes up with entire width of the div, so that means you can click to the left and right of the text --- how to i make the a tag wrap just around the text only and not the white space to the left and right of the text
<div class="comments-wrapper m-t-1"> <a href="#" class="js-reveal-comments no-link-style"><h2 class="text-center text-lead" style="
    width: auto;
"> <i class="fa fa-comments l-blue-color p-0" aria-hidden="true"></i> <span class="text-bold t blue-color m-lr-1">Comments</span> <i class="fa fa-angle-down l-blue-color p-0" aria-hidden="true"></i></h2> </a></div>

@JackEdwardLyons if you want to make clickable only the text you need to add this to css:

  margin-right: 0;
}

Hey everyone. I have used the bootstrap grid with cards to set up the following page. The problem is that the aspect ratio of the picture changes when you resize the page (the images are stretched when you view mobile). Does anyone know how I can change this? Ideally, I want the card to remain square when the page is resized. I have put the code in a pen (below). Thanks for you help.

@Dueldrawer8 - if you still need some background opacity info - try this https://css-tricks.com/snippets/css/transparent-background-images/
@robert1ridley - since your are using Bootstrap 4 have you tried img-fluid, or similar settings which are:
.img-fluid {
    max-width: 100%;
    height: auto;
}
teevik

but forcing the size of an image in one direction is not going to work, either... If the images are adjusting in size to the containing div, which is a bootstrap grid element, then it's probably not going to work anyway.

hi all please I need help with a site i'm trying to build. But before I go on, a question please. is it possible to resize the whole semantic mockup of a site? or I can only do it for some element and not the whole site? if I can, How? Now I have a site. My mobile P.O.V is different from the wide screen POV. However in a bid to involve RWD I found out that my widescreen POV keeps overriding my mobile POV and if I remove the widescreen POV codes from my CSS the mobile POV takes over and if I resize it, it behaves truly like it was meant to. but once I re-introduce the widescreen POV at the mobile browser adaptation everything goes haywire. i.e the widescreen code kicks in. How do I solve this please? or do you have any material of combining both mobile first RWD and the widescreen counterpart? or any help you can render please.( POV = Point of view) here is the site

@tundeiness When making a site responsive, using bootstrap, you can use visible classes. You can add these classes to elements to dictate when they appear/disappear. For example, I could have a column in my table disappear for mobile users but reappear for desktop users. If you're having issues making your site responsive, I urge you to look into Bootstrap, instead of reinventing the wheel.
tundeiness

@tundeiness CSS grid is very new, but hopefully someone who has studied it can help you. To resize your entire site, just use media queries and scale:

@media (max-width: 768px) {
  body {
    transform: scale(0.8);
  }
}

But that's not a good practice ;) there's a difference between having a resizable site and a responsive site

@tundeiness You might try and simplify your grid CSS a bit. I found I didn't need that much to replicate your design. Just this on the main container:

  grid-template-columns: repeat(3, 1fr);

And display: grid for the column on the right with two divs in it

I'm working on Convert HTML Entities and I'm stuck with this case "<>"
Well I skipped it to work on next challenge..
I'll come back anyway
function convertHTML(str) {
  /*var match = [/&/g, /</g, />/g, /"/g, /'/g, str];
  var convertToHTML = ["&amp;", "&lt;", "&gt;", "&quot;", "&apos;", str];*/
  var match = [[/&/g, "&amp;"], [/</g, "&lt;"], [/>/g, "&gt;"], [/"/g, "&quot;"], [/'/g, "&apos;"], [str, str]];
  var result = '';
  for (var i = 0; i < match.length; i++){
  if (str.match(match[i][0])) result += str.replace(match[i][0], match[i][1]);
  }
  return result;
}

@sabin20 Trying to figure it out now, but there are some issues in your HTML
your container only wraps around the first two images
This ID is off:
 <div class="text id=" overtext "">
and you have several elements with id="overtext" - IDs need to be unique in HTML

Aug 04 2017 19:58

@sabin20 It seems your bootstrap overrides are not taking effect - perhaps you're developing locally and copy/pasted this into codepen
Change your md classes to xs and for a quick and dirty override, do:

.col-xs-6 {
  padding: 0!important;
}

Then your images will be 50% wide
To keep your images from being distorted, make them background images with background-size: cover, or use all images of the same height x width

@flyfishingbarbara Open your codepen settings, remove the link to bootstrap you have currently. Open the quick-add menu and select Bootstrap 3.
You have Bootstrap 4 added to your pen, but your HTML is for Bootstrap 3

@flyfishingbarbara There are two different websites for the two different versions. As a rule of thumb, if you get any code from here, you are using Bootstrap 4: https://v4-alpha.getbootstrap.com/
If you get your code sample from anywhere else, it's Bootstrap 3.

@mers89
I need help overwritting CSS properties. I had added an image to <header> but then needed to call on the same function again and I cant overwrite the first image. I tried adding under CSS header .img2 { background-image: url ""}
and then calling html <header class="img2"> to add a subproperty but no luck
Gulsvi
@gulsvi
Aug 04 2017 21:58
@sabin20 It's important to understand what "responsive" means here - it doesn't mean "resizable" necessarily. So, with the grid system, you can use larger grids to fit more content when needed or to make it easier to read based on the screen size.
Responsive is about making a page respond to the screen size, and rearrange the page as needed to display the content in the best way possible. Simply putting everything in individual xs grids does not always make it responsive

However, I'm trying to make a program which allows a user to upload an excel file that contains addresses when the user clicks a button the data will be outputted out on the website in a specific order based on the address all the same postal code. http://jsfiddle.net/d2atnbrt/3/. @EgnaroDev
Aug 04 2017 23:55
sorry...
Gulsvi
@gulsvi
Aug 04 2017 23:55
Anyway, it means that ECMAScript is a standard so other implementations of JavaScript can be made and will work on any browser
iso
@iso1048
Aug 04 2017 23:55
Because I kind of got the impression that ECMAScript was JS.
Gulsvi
@gulsvi
Aug 04 2017 23:56
That way we don't end up with Microsoft creating their own version of JS and if you want your code to run in Microsoft browsers, you have to use their version of JS
Same with Apple, Google, etc...
ECMAScript is a set of standards, JavaScript is a language based on those standards
iso
@iso1048
Aug 04 2017 23:57
so these different 'variations' of js (by microsoft, apple...) are all compiled into ECMAScript and then executed?
