@WillTheSun your body in css should be like:
       body{
            margin: 0;
            background-color: #233B45;
            font-family: 'Arial';
            height: 100vh;
            width: 100vw;
            display: flex;
            flex-direction: column;
            align-items: center;
            justify-content: center;

        }

@Forlenza i would also add to body in css:
  background-repeat: no-repeat;
  background-size: cover;
   background-attachment: fixed;
   background-position: center;

Hi everyone,
I have a method in a class that uses it;s context (this) to get a value.
I want to be able to call that method from another class and keep it's original context, how would i do this?
Thanks

Look up hard binding. Inside your class constructor this.methodName = this.methodName.bind(this)

linkin-park
@linkin-park
Oct 21 2017 11:30
you need to speak to client
collect requirements - collect more more requirements
start dev - show the progress
  • collect requirements and talk about what impact what
  • deliever the first backlog
    -repeat
Ashwin
@ashwins93
Oct 21 2017 11:31
haha thats a nice roadmap
have to try

@ashwins93 look into agile development / SCRUM If you wanna dive into requirements analysis and development processes :D
Ashwin
@ashwins93
Oct 21 2017 11:36
The learning is not the tough part. Any one can build an impressive website with adequate training. But to earn money from that - that is a totally different skill - no one teaches you that
linkin-park
@linkin-park
Oct 21 2017 11:36
get into scrum master you can earn ALOT of money with 0 work :)
Ashwin
@ashwins93
Oct 21 2017 11:36
@alpox haha i'm not even related to any kind of software development
everything i know about web dev is scoped to a book or an online resource
my knowledge is purely academic
ask me questions i can give you the right answer
linkin-park
@linkin-park
Oct 21 2017 11:37
technology will change the things that you use will never stick tomorrow hard earned lesson :|
Ashwin
@ashwins93
Oct 21 2017 11:37
@linkin-park Yeah i can see that happening live. PHP came, and it is on its way out
They said study learn React but there are already people saying React is slow, we developed something better than React
alpox
@alpox
Oct 21 2017 11:38
@linkin-park right right :/ thats true - for web devs even more than for others
linkin-park
@linkin-park
Oct 21 2017 11:38

@ashwins93
Oct 21 2017 11:39
in a few years time the webiste builders will take care of building websites and our web dev skills will become irrelevant
linkin-park
@linkin-park
Oct 21 2017 11:39

@ashwins93
Oct 21 2017 11:39

alpox
@alpox
Oct 21 2017 11:40

And its one of the ugliest pieces of software ive seen (codebase)
Ashwin
@ashwins93
Oct 21 2017 11:40
I was never in this loop of the programming thing. For me its always a hobby
sure i can contribute to open source software
alpox
@alpox
Oct 21 2017 11:41
@ashwins93 same here. I didnt yet work much on the job - but i will have to. Its my education ^^
linkin-park
@linkin-park
Oct 21 2017 11:41

in India they never consider open source
Ashwin
@ashwins93
Oct 21 2017 11:41

in India they never consider open source

yeah i know

alpox
@alpox
Oct 21 2017 11:41
@linkin-park they dont? Why is that?
linkin-park
@linkin-park
Oct 21 2017 11:42
even you contributed to heck lot of work your work will be thrown out
unless you sunder pichai kind of guy
Ashwin
@ashwins93
Oct 21 2017 11:42

@ashwins93 same here. I didnt yet work much on the job - but i will have to. Its my education ^^

@alpox at least you are doing something relevant to your education

even you contributed to heck lot of work your work will be thrown out
unless you sunder pichai kind of guy

linkin-park
@linkin-park
Oct 21 2017 11:43
@alpox thats how here :)
Ashwin
@ashwins93
Oct 21 2017 11:43
In India i won't even get a job without a bachelor's degree, even if i show them 100s of my project with latest tech
alpox
@alpox
Oct 21 2017 11:43
:/ again, why? :D
Do they only want to see papers?
Okay here they wanna see papers too, but when you could build any reputation its not hard to get a job
Ashwin
@ashwins93
Oct 21 2017 11:45
@alpox I know its fucked up
linkin-park
@linkin-park
Oct 21 2017 11:45
^
Ashwin
@ashwins93
Oct 21 2017 11:45
I would need a bachelor's degree in engineering to land in a job as web dev
best i could do is freelance if i build some contacts
linkin-park
@linkin-park
Oct 21 2017 11:45
i have alot of prj in bitbucket for no reason i did that :P
Ashwin
@ashwins93
Oct 21 2017 11:45
but then again people won't easily trust strangers
linkin-park
@linkin-park
Oct 21 2017 11:46
0 penny for the work
you can i did this 0 penny :D
Ashwin
@ashwins93
Oct 21 2017 11:46
Even if i charge half the rate of the next person for designing websites far batter than the other person, they would still go for that other person - because people here are sentimental
linkin-park
@linkin-park
Oct 21 2017 11:46
In india there is toooooo much competition to get a job how you know that :)
alpox
@alpox
Oct 21 2017 11:47
But you could maybe work remote for a foreign company?
linkin-park
@linkin-park
Oct 21 2017 11:47
i worked heck hard to get my first job
Ashwin
@ashwins93
Oct 21 2017 11:47
Overpopulation
alpox
@alpox
Oct 21 2017 11:47
@ashwins93 that i heard :/ but they cannot all do programming :D
Ashwin
@ashwins93
Oct 21 2017 11:47

But you could maybe work remote for a foreign company?

That i haven't tried.

@alpox Yeah but trust matters here a lot. Its okay even if a trust worthy person fails to deliver, they would still hang on to him.
Most of the Indian companies(small ones who aren't connected internationally) have poorly designed websites. But they still pay like 200$ for that
linkin-park
@linkin-park
Oct 21 2017 11:49
are you sure ? @alpox
they are big brains here big company like facebook google amazon ebay put alot of money to recruit these guys
if you see there github they 0 projects they got recruited for 1 million dollar
alpox
@alpox
Oct 21 2017 11:50
@linkin-park i believe you that - a company i worked for also considered to outsource work to india
Well yea the github repos often dont count much for jobs
linkin-park
@linkin-park
Oct 21 2017 11:51
the guy i use to work with has done his Phd from Texas if you see his github there is nil project
but he is very talented you wont know until get tooo close to him :)
alpox
@alpox
Oct 21 2017 11:51
@ashwins93 maybe you can offer them better websites then :D
@linkin-park yea it doesnt tell much :D. In my github there are quite some abandoned or half done projects of mine, doesnt look all too good either :D
Ashwin
@ashwins93
Oct 21 2017 11:53
That's what I'm saying. Even if I did say that

Ashwin
@ashwins93
Oct 21 2017 11:55

alpox
@alpox
Oct 21 2017 11:55
Well seems you came around quite a lot :D @linkin-park thats great!
Ashwin
@ashwins93
Oct 21 2017 11:55
Even if they do have the intentions to give back to the community
alpox
@alpox
Oct 21 2017 11:56
@ashwins93 True - sometimes :D
Ashwin
@ashwins93
Oct 21 2017 11:56
But we have seen great things come out of GitHub than anything else. havent we?
alpox
@alpox
Oct 21 2017 11:56
I'll have to opensource something this weekend which i did for my last project :D small thing - but opensourcing small parts of a bigger thing can pay out
linkin-park
@linkin-park
Oct 21 2017 11:56
just deleted personal things :)
alpox
@alpox
Oct 21 2017 11:57
@ashwins93 There sure came out awesome things on GitHub. But not only :D there is a lot of great software out there which is kept only in companies
Ashwin
@ashwins93
Oct 21 2017 11:57
@alpox that is really sad.
linkin-park
@linkin-park
Oct 21 2017 11:58

linkin-park
@linkin-park
Oct 21 2017 11:58

this what startup wants
alpox
@alpox
Oct 21 2017 11:59

alpox
@alpox
Oct 21 2017 12:00
I was at a hackathon lately and the big ones are really looking for talents there
linkin-park
@linkin-park
Oct 21 2017 12:00
yea
but they get into depth of ocean
you will be like i dint know that
i used everyday in/out but i didnt know that
alpox
@alpox
Oct 21 2017 12:00
Sure yes, there is not much good and new coming out anymore
I'm planning my own company with a great product atm. The only thing missing is time
Ashwin
@ashwins93
Oct 21 2017 12:01
But I can't understand programmers talk. I can only understand in terms of input and outputs. Or graphical equations.
Thats why I'm a better accountant than a developer.
linkin-park
@linkin-park
Oct 21 2017 12:03
accounting is heck hard than web dev
Ashwin
@ashwins93
Oct 21 2017 12:03
Seriously?
linkin-park
@linkin-park
Oct 21 2017 12:04
beyond hard
web dev uses tools and build tools on that
Ashwin
@ashwins93
Oct 21 2017 12:04
It's not even complex. It's just basic math disguised
linkin-park
@linkin-park
Oct 21 2017 12:04
accountant work on many things
math in general
Ashwin
@ashwins93
Oct 21 2017 12:04
Nothing more than linear algebra
Rarely quadratic equations
If you know algebra then you already know accounting.
linkin-park
@linkin-park
Oct 21 2017 12:05
i dont know sir
Ashwin
@ashwins93
Oct 21 2017 12:05
You just have to learn the different terms we have framed to confuse people
alpox
@alpox
Oct 21 2017 12:05
:point_up: that :D
Ashwin
@ashwins93
Oct 21 2017 12:06
We have awesomely sounding names for numbers. But if you just peel the mask off you would see it's just a different way to say "add these numbers "
alpox
@alpox
Oct 21 2017 12:06
Well i know some basic accounting and i found it quite complicated tho

Morning everyone!

Any guiding thoughts on how to get the background?
Victor Abeledo
@victorja
Oct 21 2017 15:19
Hi guys I'm working on this mock project, and I can't figure out why my overlay background color is still bigger than the image. It's not much but it ruins the effect (only image 1 is has hover)
https://codepen.io/victorabeledo/pen/EwJVwY
do you know how to fix it?
Gulsvi
@gulsvi
Oct 21 2017 15:26
@victorja The line break in your html results in a space between block elements. The easiest fix is to add font-size: 0 to .column.third, but there are other options as well. https://css-tricks.com/fighting-the-space-between-inline-block-elements/
You could also make the image a background image to avoid the need of fighting with that extra space.

I find hard to wowrk with absolute and relative positions
Gulsvi
@gulsvi
Oct 21 2017 15:29
Glad that helped!
Yeah, absolute and relative positions can be a pain
spaces showing up between elements, margins collapsing, etc. also can get frustrating ;)
Victor Abeledo
@victorja
Oct 21 2017 15:30
do you know why css refuses to accept a container div to have relative position?
Gulsvi
@gulsvi
Oct 21 2017 15:31
hmmm, depends on the container and what you're trying to do
in theory it should work fine
Victor Abeledo
@victorja
Oct 21 2017 15:31
haha yes! there's a lot to learn :smile:
because when I tried it, css ignored it and took body tag as parent
by default
Gulsvi
@gulsvi
Oct 21 2017 15:33
I'd have to see to understand better, but it should be positioned relative to itself, within the <body>
absolute lets you position everything outside of the parent if desired
Victor Abeledo
@victorja
Oct 21 2017 15:36
yes, here is the example of what i meant
https://codepen.io/victorabeledo/full/EwJVwY/
if I change the position of img tag to relative it won't recognise it
I took the position relative away from .column to ilustrate
Gulsvi
@gulsvi
Oct 21 2017 15:38
It works as intended for me - what are you hoping to do with position: relative on the image?
For example, add left: 200px to your image and they position themselves relatively 200px from the left
Victor Abeledo
@victorja
Oct 21 2017 15:39
Yes I want to achieve the same thing I did in the other example
a hover that covers the img
but just the img, not the entire .column.third block
Gulsvi
@gulsvi
Oct 21 2017 15:41
I have to think about a "best practice" way to do that..not sure off the top of my head
Victor Abeledo
@victorja
Oct 21 2017 15:42
okay no problem, for now the fix you showed me works great!
Gulsvi
@gulsvi
Oct 21 2017 15:47
@victorja sorry, don't have a quick fix for the second issue :)
your <img> is a sibling of the overlay though, so position: relative won't have the effect you want
I think if you give .column.third a position of relative instead?

^ That worked for me @victorja

.column.third {
  width: 33.3%;
  font-size:0;
  position: relative;
}

img {
  width: 100%;
  height: 100%;
}

/*nuevo */
.overlay {
  display: block;
  position: absolute;
  top: 0;
  bottom: 0;
  left: 0;
  right: 0;
  width: -ms-calc(100% - 32px); /*16+16=32 asi encaja el overlay a la imagen */
  width: -moz-calc(100% - 32px);
  width: -webkit-calc(100% - 32px);
  width: calc(100% - 32px);
  margin: 16px; /*de aca vienen los otros 16 restados */
  opacity: 0;
  transition: .5s ease;
  background-color: #008CBA;
}

suerte!

Victor Abeledo
@victorja
Oct 21 2017 15:55

Any of you guys familiar with flexbox? I seem to be missing something fundamental
as my content won't split into 'rows'
my two flexbox items are overlapping
for some reason, I've not been able to google the issue effectively, and usually this means I'm missing something fundamental
Tom
@moT01
Oct 21 2017 16:16
@Docent-Of-Perfection do you have your code so we can get a better idea of what you're doing
?
I'll check that out
like
i realize images are broken in that link, I tested it across vivaldi/firefox
thinking maybe my not including moz specific properties might have been getting me
I actually have that flexbox guide open in another tab, the nowrap/wrap section I emulated almost exactly and still the items overlap
Tom
@moT01
Oct 21 2017 16:21
so what specifically are you trying to do, and what is happening - the black background and the boxes are overlapping? (the boxes aren't loading for me by the way)
Sean
@ofperfection
Oct 21 2017 16:22
contact-wrapper should sit outside terminal-wrapper
*below it
the images are broken because I used absolute paths on my local machine where I'm tinkering
however, I figured since they overlap it still illustrated the issue of overlap I was facing
Tom
@moT01
Oct 21 2017 16:22
and there's black text in there ?
yea, the pics dont need to load
Sean
@ofperfection

however it is hideous and sloppy :P

  </child1>
  <child2>

see the font-family commend in your css, use that but adapt it to work for Lobster instead
you don't paste the link inside the style sheet, you paste it above the style sheet
the first thing in your code should be the link they give you
and then after that the style information

@nic9075 @LaurenDoughty - code formatting information, it seems that you were looking for it... https://forum.freecodecamp.com/t/markdown-code-formatting/18391 - the basic way to post a block of code here is to put a separate line containing three backtick characters ``` at the top and bottom of your code block. Note that you can also go back and edit the code or comments for a few minutes after posting, using the menu selector (three dots) next to the timestamp for your post. I hope that helps.

Sometimes (and perhaps it still works) just putting three single quote characters will prompt you with the code posting instructions?

@taiJones00 - it looks like you have some fixed-width setting in there that might be keeping the content from fitting on a mobile screen?

@taiJones00 - probably that absolute position of left: 25%;? I haven't tried it on mobile but perhaps you can see if that would change it?

@taiJones00 - my experience is that any fixed-width or absolution position styling seems to cause a lot of havoc with responsive behavior. You might need to use it for your buttons on the calculator, but perhaps you can keep the "body" of the calculator to where it can move freely depending on the width, or set up media queries to give the desired behavior on mobile?
