@EricGomez101 What issue are you having?
Eric Gomez
@EricGomez101
Feb 11 2018 03:16
when i mouse over a piece of text within the div that i want highlighted, the div will no longer be highlighted and i was just wondering if there is a way to over come that issue
i want it to work like an anchor, but im using a div, header and paragraph elements
Gulsvi
@gulsvi
Feb 11 2018 03:17
Instead of using mouseover/mouseout, use :hover in your CSS. It would help to assign a class name to the div
@EricGomez101
#searchResult div:hover {
    border: 1px solid rgb(255, 76, 5);
    border-left: 4px solid rgb(255, 76, 5);
}

how to check ?
abraham anak agung
@padunk
Feb 11 2018 03:41
put a rule in your code using if or indexOf or anything
If the last is a operator than user can't type more operator
dinesh
@1532j0004kg
Feb 11 2018 03:42
ohh ok probably that's great idea \
abraham anak agung
@padunk
Feb 11 2018 03:42
or maybe a user want to change the operator from + to - ? you have to write it that too
dinesh

i will try that one and let u know !

i’ve been learning TLA+ all day today
that’s new
Darren
@DarrenfJ
Feb 11 2018 05:36
coolCool
any links?
the bases behide the SAM (State Action Model) pattern (vs MV*)
my pattern of choice.
sam.js.org
no frameworks needed
TLA uses math to describe specs for programs
it is used by AWS in most of their systems
TLA not SAM
Darren
@DarrenfJ
Feb 11 2018 05:39
sounds cool
will check it out
at least a cursory look
VaseJS
@VaseJS
Feb 11 2018 05:40
yea, the SAM pattern is a better start as it introduces TLA or why its important. and only after dealing with SAM for a bit did i look into TLA. makes things more clear because there is a video series on the TLA site when you scroll down. but without understanding why you’re even reading it, i wouldn’t go there first.
sam.js.org has to videos that explain SAM vs React/Angular

coderNewby
@coderNewby
Feb 11 2018 05:44
and Angular.. but don't know react
VaseJS
@VaseJS
Feb 11 2018 05:47
heres the problem many new devs have and maybe i have a unique perspective, but when you learn a framework, without understanding why or how the framework is doing what its doing, you’re not developing, but more praying to the framework gods. yes you can get things done, but with knowing how to code correctly (a range not a single thing), you create code that is hard to maintain
learning design patterns, some UML, clean coding, etc are what gets you jobs. I can hire any dev that knows a framework. i need a dev who can think and frameworks create anti-thinking if you are slave the framework

@AmitP88 if statement need a condition, not an asignment.
You need to add something like maybe var celsius = false so if it is false, show F and vice versa. Put the condition on your if statement. That is how toggle work

        var F = Math.floor(data.main.temp * (9/5) + 32) + F_symbol;
          var C = Math.floor(((data.main.temp * (9/5) + 32) - 32) * (5/9)) + C_symbol;

Matej Bošnjak
@mbosnjak01
Feb 11 2018 07:36
yes. the difference is, you can get random search in wiki for example .. in twich you'll need to check online and offline status of the user with if statement, and you'll have to see inside the api where that property is (cause it's not called status) xD and that's it, everything else is mostly the same

I didn't do FCC most of the map ... just some stuff when I got here before ... I learned JS and JQuery by myself while working on an app tasks from other developers, and learned Angular 1.6 version ... I decided to go for Angular stack instead of React
proably won't even touch react latter
Amit Patel
@AmitP88
Feb 11 2018 07:45
ah I see. I've learned a bit of React from Udemy and started building a resume builder app, but decided that it would be better for me to do fcc since I needed to work more on my javascript and get more done
I'm planning on finishing all 3 certs by july
I really want to get out of my current job
I think i'm gonna stick with react, since they have react native and react VR. I really want to learn those later

for sure, that's a good idea. btw, how do you come up with ideas for apps? I always struggle with that
Matej Bošnjak
@mbosnjak01
Feb 11 2018 07:52
I just think of what would be cool to have on certain platform, so I don't just go and recreate existing app. But don't worry about that much, just make sure you get your skills on higher levels. Even if you recreate an existing app just for practice, you won't struggle to do so when you get a job.
Amit Patel
@AmitP88
Feb 11 2018 07:54
yeah, that's what I was thinking for the resume builder app. I figure even though there are already tons of them out there, that if I can build one using react, at least it'll demonstrate my skills. Plus, if I make it with react, I can convert it to a mobile app using react native
Matej Bošnjak
@mbosnjak01
Feb 11 2018 07:55
Exactly! I am not sure how would that work on mobile phone. Like, wouldn't it be a little bit complicated to build a good resume with your mobile? - > Time consuming for mobile app users.
Amit Patel
@AmitP88
Feb 11 2018 07:57
I was thinking that at first, but then I figure I could possible add a voice to text function (hopefully use Googles one) to make it easier. so that way, really, all you have to do is just tap and speak the resume details and it builds your resume for you
Matej Bošnjak
@mbosnjak01
Feb 11 2018 07:57
That's actually not bad idea :D
you should definitely try to make that

Amit Patel

but now that I think about it, that sounds way more advanced lol, so I figure it would be better to build it after I complete the full stack certificate. so that I can also know how to handle server data, in case I want to publish the app on Google Play
that's what I've heard, so that gives me hope lol

This is the link to his codepen pen that I want to emulate. https://codepen.io/freeCodeCamp/full/NNvBQW
@gulsvi Am just wondering does he use two <div> in the element or just a single one to encompass everything? Cause I've tried using two <div> elements but mine seems to have two different segments after the image. Would it be correct if I encompassed all my code in a single <dev class="jumbotron> division? Cause that seems to be the only way I can replicate my page to be exactly as his!
Joe
@johnwix
Feb 11 2018 17:51
@gulsvi I know there are other ways to code mine but I want to produce a layout for mine that's exactly the same as his. Looking at his code would be cheating. However i've tried every way i can think of and it won't produce a replica if I encompass mine in two different <div> elements. What do you think? Did he encompass all his code in one single div? if he didn't how do I get my two div sections to merge into one like his?
This is how I've created mine so far! Am not sure if wrapping everything up in a jumbotron class is correct. But it's the only way I've been able to get mine to closely replicate his. https://codepen.io/Holi254/pen/aqWmXL
Gulsvi
@gulsvi
Feb 11 2018 17:55
@johnwix He uses a jumbotron to house the main content of his site. https://getbootstrap.com/docs/3.3/components/#jumbotron
I think you have figured that part out - the other part to figure out is how Bootstrap uses containers rows and columns. If you use those, you will get the look you are going for.
Read this section of the docs and spend a couple of hours playing around with the grid system in a separate codepen: https://getbootstrap.com/docs/3.3/css/#grid
It's a good idea to get very familiar with how this works before jumping to the next project, the portfolio project.

@gulsvi Wow! Thanks. That 1st link you gave me was the answer I was looking for. I'll read on though so i can master these div classes. But I basically changed my code by adding one div class after jumbotron and placing it in a container class and it worked. @gulsvi

Ken Haduch
@khaduch
Feb 11 2018 18:48
@Bradkittle - the container class on your div is probably the main reason - change to container-fluid - and by the way, all classes and other attribute values should be in quotes - that is <div class="container"> and <a href="#home"> etc. The container-fluid will get you most of the way there. TO make the navbar really extend all the way, just put it outside of the first div, so that it is the first element in the <body>

@Bradkittle - and, by the way (Don't miss that I made a slight addition to the previous post) on CodePen, you shouldn't have the <body>, nor the <html> nor the <head> tags and content in the HTML panel. Only the HTML that will be in the body. There are places in the various panels to configure other things, like add the google font in the CSS config as an external element. CodePen uses a template and that template contains those major section tags...

AND you're welcome!

@Bradkittle - you might want to make your background image be the background of the body element? But that image is not loading because CodePen enforces using https:// for the page URL, and the image that you are requesting has http:// in the URL, so you get an error: onloadwff.js:60 Mixed Content: The page at 'https://codepen.io/Bradkittle/pen/bLWdvB?editors=1100' was loaded over HTTPS, but requested an insecure image 'http://soppymum.com/wp-content/uploads/awesome-bedroom-wallpaper-texture-black-as-40-grey-texture-background-and-wallpaper-for-designer-web-design-Awesome-black-bedroom-wallpaper-Download-awful-bedroom-wallpaper-black-and-red_bright-_extra.jpg'. @Bradkittle - and it doesn't look like you have access to that site, at least I couldn't directly load the background image. A hint about a resource that is available through CodePen - at the bottom of the editor screen there is a button for "Assets" - you can look at the photos from unsplash.com, and search for things - you can at least start by using one of those to get your page up and running.
