Once I finish this website, this will be my first website so please feel free to be honest as I want to get better.

@liamdocherty Pretty impresive homepage, I was only able to navigate to the prices page, the other pages look blank just FYI. I like the animations done on the page. The one nit-pick I have is for the three avatars on the bottom of the first page, I dislike the offset circle outline bethind them, it doesn't match with the other white outlines for the brands above them
Also typo on the footer, its Priceinstead of Prices, like the top

@bradtaniguchi Hi, thanks for the feedback. Sorry I have only done the homepage. Thats why you can see that. I have started to also work on the prices one thats why you can also see a tiny bit of content on there as well.

In terms of what you said I will take note of the feedback much appreciated.

Hi guys! what does this jquery code mean var $next = $('#' + prefix + ++num);?
Brad
@bradtaniguchi
Apr 05 2018 00:53
@aguyinmontreal $next is the selected object that matches with the id generated from prefix + ++num
Id assume this is in some sort of loop or something
Emil
@aguyinmontreal
Apr 05 2018 00:53
@bradtaniguchi thanks! and what is "++num" ?
Brad
@bradtaniguchi
Apr 05 2018 00:54
@aguyinmontreal That means you increment num before you use it
So like num++, means you take what num is currently, then increment it after you take it.
Emil
@aguyinmontreal
Apr 05 2018 00:54
@bradtaniguchi it shouldn't be num++ ?
++num and num++ are the same?
Brad
@bradtaniguchi
Apr 05 2018 00:55
You can do both, depending on the situation. I assume they use ++num so the first generated prefix + ++num starts with 1, instead of 0

myHeaders.append('Content-Type', 'application/x-www-form-urlencoded');
myHeaders.append('Accept', 'application/json');

fetch("https://andruxnet-random-famous-quotes.p.mashape.com/?cat=movies&count=10", {
  headers: myHeaders

Hi guys! Is this code valid Javascript/Jquery? Never seen something written like that before: if($(button).get(0).tagName.toLowerCase() === 'a') { enabled ? $(button).removeClass('disabled-link') : $(button).addClass('disabled-link'); } else { $(button).prop('disabled', !enabled); }
Rahsheen Porter
@rahsheen
Apr 05 2018 02:26
You talking about the ternary? blah ? doThis() : doThat()?
Ken Haduch
@khaduch
Apr 05 2018 03:08

@aguyinmontreal - if you "deconstruct" that line of code to show what's happening, maybe it will look different and make a little more sense?

if( $(button).get(0).tagName.toLowerCase() === 'a') {
   // if the variable "enabled" is true, remove the class "disabled-link" from all buttons, else add the class "disabled-link"
    enabled ? $(button).removeClass('disabled-link') : $(button).addClass('disabled-link');  // ternary, like another if - then - else
} else {
    $(button).prop('disabled', !enabled);
}

I guess that the only thing is to understand what that first line of code is telling you - I'm going to guess that it's looking to see if the button is an anchor element, the a must be referring to that.
It might be that a little more context is needed to fully understand what is going on on the page?

I am having a super bizzar situation with flex...
Screen Shot 2018-04-05 at 01.12.27.png
The bottom row is not sizing the others...
form > * {
    margin: 7.5px;
    border: 2px solid transparent;
    border-radius: 12px;
    padding: 6px 9px;
    height: max-content;
    flex-grow: 1;
    resize: none;
}
Is there some property to textarea that I am missing?

@DarkxPunk the problem here is the width. set the width of the text-area

@BlazingRockStorm Ideally I am trying to have them resize as required. As you can see the inputs seem to react fine, but the textarea though using the same style is somehow bigger.

Guys I got a question regarding the process of getting a Jun Front End job. I'm interested if your languages will matter a lot, so my idea is Either to master Javascript as much as I can - or to explore Wordpress a bit of React and maybe some Ruby? I can just mention those 3 in my resume so it will look that I kind of know how they work ?

@dbsimeonov I would say master HTML,CSS, JS then learn 2-3 frameworks. The more the better. If you're like myself and haven't fully met them requirements yet, do freelance work. Go into businesses offering them your services and you can use that to develop your experience.

@liamdocherty Your website looks good, small issue I noticed even yesterday is your branding section, it has fixed height where on resize the images are going outside the div. And on the media query before mobile they go with different sizes which doesn't look really good (my own opinion). And I don't know is it my browser the header on mobile doesn't have a background-img.

Amazing work ;)

@liamdocherty and small idea, you can create an arrow for the scroll top which you have on your footer. Its like 2 lines of js I think but makes a difference.
Liam Docherty
@liamdocherty
Apr 05 2018 13:52

@dbsimeonov Thanks for the feedback.

1) In terms of the branding section thanks for letting me know. I still actually have to do some stuff to finish that section off. However, thanks for pointing that out.

2) The header is not meant to have a background image on smaller devices. I thought that was a good idea and just to put a solid colour as most background images don't look to good on mobile from what I have seen. Do you think I should have a background image instead of a solid colour?

3) In terms of the arrow, I already have? Unless we're speaking about two different things. The arrow gives the user the ability to go back up to the top of the webpage.

Ok, will check now. My problem is that I have too many ideas but the never experienced that I need to do the design so I think that might be the next step..
@Sprinting What do you think of portfolio one-pager, where I create everything on modals just like this website has about section?
Kartik Mudgal
@Sprinting
Apr 05 2018 17:17
I'm honestly still stuck on designing my own portfolio - so I'm not the person you should be asking for design tips
but still, I'd rather prefer a plainer site - but that's me. I think in a portfolio it's important to display your expertise
and animations/fancy stuff aren't really necessary for that
you can always add the bells and whistles after you've got a skeleton up

It looks nice yes. But I spoke with few people and as you said you should highlight your good parts. Thats why especially for someone applying for Juniour position I think you should do as much as you can with limits of course to make it more interacting ?
I've seen the portfolio of people with 5+ years experience and its literally something like 1h work just because they have the experience already. The design etc makes it less important for them.

Hello world!
I have a bit of a problem with the wikipedia viewer project, maybe you've saw it before since they have such a lame api
$.ajax({
  type: "GET",
  url: "https://en.wikipedia.org/w/api.php?action=opensearch&search=cats&limit=10&profile=normal&format=json&warningsaserror=true&callback=?",
  dataType: "jsonp",
  succes: function(data){
    console.log(data);
  },
  error: function(err){
    console.log(err);
  }
});
my ajax request doesn't result nothing, yet if I enter the url in the browser url bar it shows me everything I need
I googled and skimmed through dozens of articles, the console doesn't show anything, both on codepen.io and browser console. Anybody any idea what went wrong?

  1. Find all available php versions and store them in array // that is done
  2. loop over them
    *for each version in array:
     *chage selected field to that version >> that requires loop, that will go trough all <option> fields and when option value matches the version above
     *then trigger on change event //when this event is triggered POST request that changes html(that function is defined)
     *then after html is changed grab the required data and store it in .json file / i have code for grabbing the data
the question is about the structure, i have many "moving" pieces and i need to execute them in very specific way
so basicly it is loop > second loop inside > from there event trigger > post request > when post request is done > function call
Brad
@bradtaniguchi
Apr 05 2018 18:15
@phiratio So you can make all the requests upfront for the array right?
Bozhidar Dimitrov
@phiratio
Apr 05 2018 18:16
no, the oposite
i have a html page with dropdown
when i click on item it triggers post request and it changes data on the page
Brad
@bradtaniguchi
Apr 05 2018 18:17
Ok ok, so 1 event, make 1 request, update 1 thing
Bozhidar Dimitrov
@phiratio
Apr 05 2018 18:18
i want to collect that data and simulate click trough
yes it is like if i was doin it manually
i click on the option > post brings me the data > i collect the data in json
i repeat
i must figure how to do that in exactly this order
when the option is changed > trigger event > post request is sent > when post is finished collect
repeat.
Brad
@bradtaniguchi
Apr 05 2018 18:20
Anyone up to the task to help @phiratio I'm pretty busy so I cant walk you through it, but its not complicated. How are you making the request? Vanilla JS, jquery, fetch>

Brad

The only thing is it doesn't naturally support promises, so if you wanted that you need to integrate it manually. (it uses callbacks)

Hi, I am having an issue where I am getting the boolean back from this filter function instead of the value. What is it that I am doing wrong?
function filter(arr, fn) {
  let output = [];
  for (let i = 0; i < arr.length; i++) {
    output.push(fn(arr[i]));
  }
  return output;
}

let filterTest = filter([1,2,3,4], function(element, index, array) {
  return element % 2 === 0;

@Swoozeki Yes, semicolons are optional, even though they dont work as "statement terminators", they work as "statement breaker". In cases like using IIFE you have to use semicolon beforehand or you get error

@AbrisM

Is it the TYPE of class an object is

I'm not sure I quite follow. Class are blue prints or in JS they are nothing but function constructor

AbrisM
@AbrisM
Apr 05 2018 20:31
Yes, classes are blue-prints of an object and an object is a realization of that blueprint
When I mean type, I mean if they are an int, a char, string, etc. Yea in JS I believe a variable is just called var
I think the state is the data in an object
But I need to verify this haha, a lot of articles unfortunately don't supply that so I'm wondering if anyone knows of a source that does?

what do you think about the book 'Professional Javascript for web Developers-Nicholas C.Zakas'? I am currently studying with it and I think it takes too long time and talk about contents which is less important or obsolete. Do I need to study different way or is it still recommended to read it?? I became very skeptical on studying software with bunch of books.

@AbrisM is there any chance you are using react and you need to understand what is state?
@Amasian if you are a begginer, then everything you need at this moment, you can find at MDN :D

@Amasian that book's latest edition was in 2012 according to Amazon. I personally would not* use a book that old when JS has changed a lot just within the last few years.

@AbrisM State of object is a design pattern, also used in React and such. Simply put, the State pattern is a way of making the behaviour of an object, its methods dependent on its state. Check this wiki article out

@Amasian If you want to learn the fundamentals of JS in book form many have recommended JavaScript: The Definitive Guide by David Flanagan
It would be great resource for areas where FCC tends to only provide shallow information.

@harut-g Sorry I don't use Redux, I only know CSS/HTML and Javascript for now

The book is for the fundamentals . In my opinion, it's not to be read cover to cover. Its to be used to grasp certain aspects of the language a bit deeper.

how can i make those 10 requests behave synchrnoneously
the calling function is defined as async(http object is used) and i must not alter it
Brad
@bradtaniguchi
Apr 05 2018 21:13
@phiratio What do you mean synchronously? You want to call them one after another?
but waiting for the previous one to return
Bozhidar Dimitrov
@phiratio
Apr 05 2018 21:14
yes
call first
WHEN first returns
do something and WHEN that thing is done
go for the second
Brad
@bradtaniguchi
Apr 05 2018 21:14
How many of these are you going to fire after one another tho?
Bozhidar Dimitrov
@phiratio
Apr 05 2018 21:14
5 to 10 requests
no more
i am not sure what to search in google
in order to achieve that result
Brad
@bradtaniguchi
Apr 05 2018 21:15
Ok
Your using promises right?
Bozhidar Dimitrov
@phiratio
Apr 05 2018 21:16
i'm trying but
i cant quite catch the whole picture
Brad
@bradtaniguchi
Apr 05 2018 21:18

Well instead of a callback:

$.ajax({
  method:'GET',
  success: function() {// do stuff}
})

promises look like this

functionThatReturnsPromise(url).then(function() {
// do stuff with response
});
Bozhidar Dimitrov
@phiratio
Apr 05 2018 21:19
yes this is the basic
Brad
@bradtaniguchi
Apr 05 2018 21:19
The KEY feature is being able to return from the thenanother promise, so for example:
getStuffAsync().then((res) => {
  return getOtherAsyncStuffWithRes(res);
}).then((res) => {
  return getOtherOtherAsyncStuffWithRes(res);
});
you can keep doing this (or use async await if you have that available instead of the then chaining)
Bozhidar Dimitrov
@phiratio
Apr 05 2018 21:20
but i am going to a point when
i trigger event click
which event triggers function, which i cannot alter or mess with
that function is the async httprequest object with method POST
if i could mess with it i can add third argument and make it sync. and everything will click
Brad
@bradtaniguchi
Apr 05 2018 21:27
Not sure why you can't alter the event trigger function
user clicks on something -> calls a function -> function makes the async call

Hi folks, I am working on the wikipedia viewer challenge, and for some reason, nothing is logging to the console when this line of code runs:
    $.get(call, function (data) {
      console.log("success");
      // var obj = JSON.parse(data);
    });
call is a url which successfully returns JSON when entered in browser
