@roxxlen you need to make a value in your Calendar component and pass that value to CurrentDate component. The value is a date value.

@TonyRednil you can use fcc test suite before you submit to check if your project passed or not.
btw i try it and it only passed 3 of 16 requirement.

@Divi-s I don't know much about browser extension development, but Youtube provides you with XML documents for subtitles in each of their videos. It's should be fairly easy to get the time out of those

I am feeling stupud. Position absolute is supposed to take an element out of flow correct?
Bjorn van de Peut
@bjorno43
Jun 13 2018 05:38
@DarkxPunk Not nessesarily. It's possible to give an element an absolute position relative an element with a relative position
DarkxPunk
@DarkxPunk
Jun 13 2018 05:38
…? Say that again?
Bjorn van de Peut
@bjorno43
Jun 13 2018 05:39
You often see that with floating text bubbles for example that appear above text input elements for extra info
DarkxPunk
@DarkxPunk
Jun 13 2018 05:40
Wait yes sorry I know what you mean now, But I mean it pulls it out of the flow relative to its siblings right?
Bjorn van de Peut
@bjorno43
Jun 13 2018 05:40
Ye it should
DarkxPunk
@DarkxPunk
Jun 13 2018 05:40
Okay and it also pulls its children out of flow
Bjorn van de Peut
@bjorno43
Jun 13 2018 05:41
Ye normally it does
DarkxPunk
@DarkxPunk
Jun 13 2018 05:41
Okay so how come I got this
<header>
            <nav>
                <a href="#">Home</a>
                <a href="#">About</a>
                <a href="#">Work</a>
                <a href="#">Services</a>
                <a href="#">Blog</a>
                <a href="#">Contact</a>
            </nav>
            <a class="logo nostyle" href="#">
                <h1>Logo</h1>
            </a>
            <section id="main-slideshow" class="slideshow">
                <article class="slide active">
                    <img class="bg" src="background1.jpg" width="150%" height="auto" />
                    <h2>This is one slide</h2>
                </article>
The nav and the .logo are set position absolute but the #main-slideshow is being pushed down by the collective height of the children of the nav and .logo...
Bjorn van de Peut
@bjorno43
Jun 13 2018 05:44
Because #main-slideshow isn't a child of any of them in there?
DarkxPunk
@DarkxPunk
Jun 13 2018 05:44
Exactly it is not a child so it should appear at the top, not be affected by the two elements taken out of flow by position absolute...
Bjorn van de Peut
@bjorno43
Jun 13 2018 05:46
Oh, no that's not how it works. If I remember correctly. If you look at it like layers, all elements are still on the same layer. If you would scroll down, the nav and logo class would stay in place, but the #main-slideshow would disappear behind them. If you would give both of them a different z-index, I think it won't be pushed down
DarkxPunk
@DarkxPunk
Jun 13 2018 05:48
Z-index made no difference.
Bjorn van de Peut
@bjorno43
Jun 13 2018 05:48
Did you give the #main-slideshow a different index?
Perhaps you could make a Codepen? I could check for myself what's going on :)

@DarkxPunk that's how position: absolute works
are you sure you want to use it?
DarkxPunk
@DarkxPunk
Jun 13 2018 05:55
@Marmiz Sorry?
Claudio Restifo
@Marmiz
Jun 13 2018 05:56
@DarkxPunk well, both position absolute wants to stay in the same spot... and they do
DarkxPunk
@DarkxPunk
Jun 13 2018 05:56
The two position absolutes are fine, they can float wherever. The question becomes why are they effecting .slideshow
Claudio Restifo
@Marmiz
Jun 13 2018 05:57
affecting in what sense?
DarkxPunk
@DarkxPunk
Jun 13 2018 05:58
Well if you look at the codepen above you see that grey space, that shouldent be there, the .slideshow should be at the absolute top if the other elements are floating with position absolute.
Claudio Restifo
@Marmiz
Jun 13 2018 06:00
@DarkxPunk that;s because the browser normalization that codepen adds include a position:relative for all the a, that has a higher specificty than your class thus Logo is not positioned absolutely
DarkxPunk
@DarkxPunk
Jun 13 2018 06:01
I have this happening even not on codepen...
and even if I apply position absolute to all the children the space is still there, just smaller.
John Su
@JSN190
Jun 13 2018 06:03
Is there any reason why I'm not able to set the padding for the left and right sides around a grid?
Tried making a div container too
Claudio Restifo
@Marmiz
Jun 13 2018 06:04
@DarkxPunk every browser sets a as position:relative by default. Try using a higer specificity than class (ie ID) and see if it helps :smile:
John Su
@JSN190
Jun 13 2018 06:04
the top and bottom set perfectly but I just can't get padding for the left and right
DarkxPunk

facepalm

That is the dumbest shit ever...
But yup that solves it...
Bjorn van de Peut
@bjorno43
Jun 13 2018 06:07
@Marmiz Well done. I honestly wouldn't have figured that one out myself
John Su
@JSN190
Jun 13 2018 06:07
Oh, I found why now... it was because I had justify-content set on a flex-direction: column container, I think
DarkxPunk
@DarkxPunk
Jun 13 2018 06:08
I would have just troved all the styles in the dev tools and just raged XD
@Marmiz Thank you good sir
Now why the hell would position relative be default for an <a> tag...
What convoluted reason did someone think that was a useful idea...
DarkxPunk
@DarkxPunk
Jun 13 2018 06:13
Okay anyway it is bed time, night y’all.
Bjorn van de Peut
@bjorno43
Jun 13 2018 06:14
@DarkxPunk Gn8!
Claudio Restifo
@Marmiz
Jun 13 2018 07:02

@DarkxPunk to be honest the real question is why a "logo" should be an anchor element. Even if it's just for prototyping, create an empty div with some space :smile:

it would have solved you the problem right away :+1:

mpmaan
@mpmaan
Jun 13 2018 16:12
after the object slides in where does transition ends?
you could try using 'right' property to hide the object just to the left of viewport. After animation ends remove the class which causes animation and again reset the 'right' property to reposition or hide the object.
this should work if you object kind of fades away at the end of transition

so it is good practice to test in these site?
Brad
@bradtaniguchi

there are services that will take your code and run your automated tests on hundreds of browsers automatically, but you gotta pay for those
include*engine
@newtothat
Jun 13 2018 18:31
sounds cool
Brad
@bradtaniguchi
Jun 13 2018 18:31
Yes, its always good to test your code, regardless of what your doing. Unless your one of those programmers that doesn't write bugs :P
include*engine
@newtothat
Jun 13 2018 18:33
when I run it on my own computer it shows everything fine or even for back-end xamp for php and mysql works fine
but you kinda mean that it isnt real testing?
Brad
@bradtaniguchi
Jun 13 2018 18:34
There's differnet kinds of testing, unit-testing, integration testing, end-2-end testing, etc
Different levels require differnet tools, different approaches and shows you different indicators to how your code is functioning. There is another level which is basically manually testing too
include*engine
@newtothat
Jun 13 2018 18:35
I didn't know that we have to test it somewhere else before publishing it.
Brad
@bradtaniguchi
Jun 13 2018 18:35
but the ones i mentioned first, can all be automated, which is really powerful
Otherwise what If I got to your site/web-app and it doesn't connect to the database cuse a port is blocked when you deployed?
include*engine
@newtothat
Jun 13 2018 18:36
Can you tell me where i can test front-end and back-end languages ?
i mean beside text editor and pc browser
Brad
@bradtaniguchi
Jun 13 2018 18:37
Idk anything about PHP, you need to go look that up. On the front-end your mainly testing your web-app. If you have a framework (like Angular) testing is provided by the framework. If your using plain JS or something, youd probably end up using something like selenium
There's lots of testing suites, but your code needs to be testable, otherwise you can only check the "surface" html of what the user sees
include*engine
@newtothat
Jun 13 2018 18:39
how can I write a testable code then?
Brad
@bradtaniguchi
Jun 13 2018 18:39
Thats the level of end-2-end testing more or less, where your basically testing everything in the stack. If your database is corrupted, your php code might throw an error, and your front-end wont show correctly. You don't know any of that, all you know is the front-end is not showing something correctly.
include*engine
@newtothat
Jun 13 2018 18:39
what do you mean by testable code?
Brad
@bradtaniguchi
Jun 13 2018 18:39
That's a pretty vague question, along the lines of "How do I write better code"
include*engine
@newtothat
Jun 13 2018 18:42
is it always like that? in proggramming
Brad
@bradtaniguchi
Jun 13 2018 18:42
Like what?
include*engine
@newtothat
Jun 13 2018 18:42
you think that i am almost there but actually
but as you learn more
it is getting wider and wider
and you see yourself left so behind
Brad

Yea, you can't say "Ive learned everything!" haha, cuse there's always more to learn, which is something you should always seek out, and get ahead of the game
otherwise yea, your going to be left out
include*engine
@newtothat
Jun 13 2018 18:45
you know Brad learning and using them one-by one is easy but combination of languages is tough part
it takes days or weeks to build something
Brad
@bradtaniguchi
Jun 13 2018 18:47
Yea its a lot of work. Idk if anyone says its easy, cuse its isnt'
include*engine
@newtothat
Jun 13 2018 18:48
yeah
Brad
@bradtaniguchi
Jun 13 2018 18:49
But then if it was really easy, then everyone would do it and wed all be out of a job haha

@newtothat
Jun 13 2018 18:51
if you don't have computer background like me and without knowing how to use a computer start directly learning web development
then basics of it is hard to learn
Brad
@bradtaniguchi
Jun 13 2018 18:52
Depends, ever heard of Ada Lovelace?
include*engine
@newtothat
Jun 13 2018 18:53
no
Brad
@bradtaniguchi
Jun 13 2018 18:53

is it her?
cana can she be a programmer without a computer
Brad
@bradtaniguchi
Jun 13 2018 18:55
Id read into it, instead of just skimming google and asking me. You got all you need haha
it was obviously all conceptual, but that's what programming is at its core, concepts.
same goes for computer science, which is pretty much defined as "the study of computation"
include*engine
@newtothat
Jun 13 2018 18:56
i see so you have to deal with numbers well? in CS
Brad
@bradtaniguchi
Jun 13 2018 18:57
Uh yea to a degree, there's a good portion of math
Different kind of math than say, calculus, or trig
include*engine
@newtothat
Jun 13 2018 18:58
different kind of math ? like what
Brad
@bradtaniguchi
Jun 13 2018 18:58
things more along the lines of sets, boolean logic, algorithms
include*engine
@newtothat
Jun 13 2018 18:58
is it academic level of math
Brad
@bradtaniguchi
Jun 13 2018 18:58
not sure what you mean by that

when you study maths at university
as your major

What's the easiest way to get up and running with Vue in an existing webpack project?
Brad
@bradtaniguchi
Jun 13 2018 19:00
@JSN190 Doesn't vue have a CLI?
John Su
@JSN190
Jun 13 2018 19:00
I'd usually just throw in a script tag but I'd like to know for learning's sake
include*engine
@newtothat
Jun 13 2018 19:00
they kinda learn more about math rather than other major students
John Su
@JSN190
Jun 13 2018 19:01
vuecli creates an entirely new webpack project
Brad
@bradtaniguchi
Jun 13 2018 19:01
@newtothat again it depends what majors were talking about
@JSN190 id make a new bare bones project and check out how it sets up the webpack config
and carry that over to your actual project, or check to see if the CLI can do some special magic to get you going on an existing project. But idk how complex the build is for vue
@newtothat An engineer would probably learn more math in general than a CS student, but in CS the math that can apply is very domain oriented. You don't really care about boolean algebra if you aren't going to be working with computers at some level.
include*engine
@newtothat
Jun 13 2018 19:06
ok does cs students need to learn physics or something else
to create something in the future
i dont know talking robots or spaceship
John Su
@JSN190
Jun 13 2018 19:07
Yeah, I thought I'd try that at first but it does seem quite elaborate. I found this though and it seems to be what I'm looking for https://skyronic.com/blog/vue-project-scratch

Jun 13 2018 19:08
i mean other science like medicine etc.
Brad
@bradtaniguchi
Jun 13 2018 19:10
I had to take physics, but unless your going to be dealing with physics, or low-level parts of the system it isn't required
Like if I had to program a game engine or something ,you obviously need physics, or if I was helping engineer a streetlights circuit boards to change the colors, then maybe it would be nice to understand basic physics. But for designing a progress web-app, naw
include*engine
@newtothat
Jun 13 2018 19:12
what was your major @bradtaniguchi
Brad
@bradtaniguchi

@newtothat Computer Science
include*engine
@newtothat
Jun 13 2018 19:13
cool
which university?
sorry i am asking because i have friends who studies computer science and also i am thinking to study it in the future
Brad
@bradtaniguchi
Jun 13 2018 19:15
a sate one nearby, and you should its a good major.
include*engine
@newtothat
Jun 13 2018 19:16
in a real university but for now ii applied for online cs and they accepted me . it was just english exam to pass it
everything in there is from begining as they say you dont need have a computer background to start here
just curiosity and math
Brad
@bradtaniguchi
Jun 13 2018 19:17
thats cool

@newtothat
Jun 13 2018 19:18
i hope so

yesterday my boss' daughter told me about pi number i didnt know what it is so started math in english at khan academy
really?
how is that so?
a lot of people say that but i really don't know what they mean
Brad
@bradtaniguchi
Jun 13 2018 19:20
My University taught me the core subjects, but they don't have time to go into a lot of things, because things change so fast. For example, the framework I use at work just didn't exist when I started school. Things move that fast

@srlhyo
guys, I got a problem!
in my code, there is a section where height: 100vh is applied. But, because the content is bigger than the viewport height, my footer moves up quite a bit.
is there away the content, nice and neat, within the viewport height?

so you learn them by yourself?
Brad

you have too, or you'll end up like the people I graduate who didn't want to learn anything else and are stuck in IT jobs

Jun 13 2018 19:23
ohh i remembered also after english exam they asked me to talk about my own learning experience and i told them from what i remembered biology class ten years ago and i also said how i learned english by myself
how do you manage your time when you work
Brad
@bradtaniguchi
Jun 13 2018 19:24
Like in work or outside of work?
include*engine
@newtothat
Jun 13 2018 19:24
both if possile
Brad
@bradtaniguchi
Jun 13 2018 19:25
Well I don't think I handle my out-side work time very well, I have to many side projects, get distracted, and dont fully finish a lot of things. At work I think I'm pretty productive
include*engine
@newtothat
Jun 13 2018 19:25
like do you have right to learn if you have free time at work and then outside it?
Brad
@bradtaniguchi
Jun 13 2018 19:25
Well I'm pretty backed up with work at work, so I learn in my freetime, or on the spot if required
The main thing is knowing whats out there, and expanding your horizons. You don't need to be pro at everything, but know your options.
You could spend 3 hours doing some really hard task, or spend 15 minutes researching the right way todo it, and spend 5 minutes using something you found/learned about
definantly about working smarter not harder
include*engine
@newtothat
Jun 13 2018 19:27
harder makes you only tired

Jun 13 2018 19:30
Perhaps I could have a nice, scroll bar over the content and have the viewport fixed until the content gets the end.
I was suggested in codeReview channel to apply max-width: 100%;
but I dont want the content to get squashed or something
is not the idea.
include*engine
@newtothat
Jun 13 2018 19:32
is it your own design?
@bradtaniguchi tell me more about working smarter than harder?
like why do you think so?
Helio Goncalves
@srlhyo
Jun 13 2018 19:33
it is mine
yes
why?!
you guys can help me?
Brad
@bradtaniguchi
Jun 13 2018 19:35
@newtothat That saying goes for a lot of things. But id consider it exponentially true for programing and what not. A pretty basic example is loops, you could write 100 statements, or 1 loop. (dumb example) Or you could setup end-2-end tests to try to find a bug in one part of your app, or a unit test on the exact function you think isn't acting as expected.
@srlhyo sorry I don't know, I hate scrolling/view-size issues
include*engine
@newtothat
Jun 13 2018 19:36
@srlhyo i loved your design
Brad
@bradtaniguchi
Jun 13 2018 19:37
Or, you could spend 25% of your time formatting your code so it looks nice, or you install prettier and have it do it for you on save.
Helio Goncalves
@srlhyo
Jun 13 2018 19:37
@newtothat thanks a lot. It's always great to hear that!

@srlhyo sure
@bradtaniguchi lol atom beauty ruins eveything. i didnt like it personally
Brad
@bradtaniguchi
Jun 13 2018 19:40
All prettiers are opinionated, but I consider theatsomething that saves time. You could argue with me (or coworkers) about how the code should be formatted, or totally forget about it and just format on save
include*engine
@newtothat
Jun 13 2018 19:41
yeah time is important but why whould you want an orginized code?
just to read easily or be orginized
Brad
@bradtaniguchi
Jun 13 2018 19:42
both. Code should be written so it can be read and understood easily by yourself and others. No point in making things abstract, complex, hard to read for no reason. That doesn't make you a better programmer haha
include*engine
@newtothat
Jun 13 2018 19:43
lol i guess so
Brad
@bradtaniguchi
Jun 13 2018 19:43
I dislike the term "coding" because a code is something that is "hard to read" or "has to be deciphered"
include*engine
@newtothat
Jun 13 2018 19:43
i am not that advanced to think about that
Brad
@bradtaniguchi

I remmember helping a classmate who wrote functions litterally like this:

function checkIsOver(a, b, c) {
if (a < b || c < b) {
  if (a ==b) {
  / ...
  }
}

He had bugs cuse he had no idea what a,b,c ment

include*engine
@newtothat

@bradtaniguchi yeah maybe it is good practice being organized from begining
Brad
@bradtaniguchi
Jun 13 2018 19:47
helps prevent bugs and headaches later, where finding those bugs takes a lot more time than just being clear the first time. My boss used to use the excuse "we will clean it up later" and its gotten to a point were we can't clean up anything since we have no idea wtf anything does
include*engine
@newtothat
Jun 13 2018 19:47
a space after == ?
you can give it value when you call it
i see your point now
if you have something to do today do it today? don't leave it for later or tomorrow?
Brad
