@jill-lee what do you mean folder's password? do you mean zip file's password?

What file system? Windows or Mac/Linux? As Tom mentioned might even be a permissions issue. If it’s asking for a password...well your friend should know that. Otherwise...you’d have to look maybe for a password cracker...

This is basic basic basic.
I'm trying to float a picture of a trashcan to the right.
Using an external stylesheet, it would simply be div{ float: right; width: 120 px}?
I tried doing that (even the bordering) and the style only worked with this sheet when I posted it into the <style> tags in the html, not in the external :<

@jill-lee as i know, the password is not used for the folder but it is used for keystore file; and windows use key in keystore file to encrypt the folder. and sorry, i dont know a way to break that encryption.

@jill-lee try booting into safe mode to modify the permissions. There should be three users System, your friend account name, administrator, you need to uncheck the DENY checkmarks for the all accounts listed. Then she should be okay, if this doesn't work im not sure what else will work.

@mstellaluna windows 7 does not have its own password encrypt files right ? She needs to download a 3rd party software for that or its possible just using windows?

Sep 27 2018 22:30
@jill-lee are you sure it's encrypted and not just inaccessible because she doesn't have rights to view the files (NTFS permissions)?
Jason Luboff
@JLuboff
Sep 27 2018 22:30
@jill-lee Windows 7 had bitlocker
Jill Lee
@jill-lee
Sep 27 2018 22:30
@junyada100 can she encrypt a file just using windows 7 or she could have downloaded a 3rd party software?
Jason Luboff
@JLuboff
Sep 27 2018 22:30
Both
Christopher McCormack
@cmccormack
Sep 27 2018 22:31
if you can see individual files with their extensions, it probably isn't encrypted though
could just require she takes ownership of them in the security tab or whatever it is now
Jason Luboff
@JLuboff
Sep 27 2018 22:31
If it was a permission issue, it wouldn't ask for a password
Christopher McCormack
@cmccormack
Sep 27 2018 22:31
(unless that's how bitlocker works? no clue)
when does the password prompt show up?
@JLuboff it might if she didn't have permission but was able to enter admin or owner credentials maybe
Jason Luboff
@JLuboff
Sep 27 2018 22:33
This is the big issue with encrypting files...you loose the password you're most likely SOL
@cmccormack No permission issue shouldn't ask for credentials
If anyhting it would say "You do not have access." or something along those lines at which point you can tell it to give you access

She said she forgot the pw it was in her old laptop and its gone now. When she tried to open the files in her new laptop its locked she handed me the disk to see if I can crack it. She could not rem if she downloaded a 3rd party software but shes thinks its just windows. When I opened the files on my laptop using her external usb it wasnt asking for pw it only says locked
Or this file cannot be accessed something like that

if I remember correctly it's a little complicated but essentially you right click the drive or folder and go to properites, then click Security tab, click something at the bottom to change ownership or advanced or whatever, change yourself to the owner, and make sure you apply it to all subdirectories
Jason Luboff
@JLuboff
Sep 27 2018 22:39
Properties -> Security -> Advanced -> Owner (Click change).. etc
And Click the "Replace all child object permission entries with inehritable permission entries from this object" at the bottom

@jill-lee Looks like its Windows EFS encryption.. try right clicking a file -> Properties -> General -> Advanced -> Uncheck "Encrypt contents to secure data"
I believe you'll still need the password though.

@JLuboff I think I need to access the computer and not from a read only external usb
or will that not make any difference?

I'm not positive but I think you should be able to do it from the USB
