I'm probably going about this all wrong, but is there a way to make the parent container display "on top" of the child elements? I want to make it's opacity less than 1 so it looks as though you are looking "through" it at the contents

@camnicklaus Opacity will affect everything, you can use RGBA instead to adjust the opacity on specific elements: background-color: rgba(170,170,170,.3);
The .3 at the end adjusts the opacity of the color applied
