I'm figuring it out as I go along too - there's a lot to learn in the bootstrap.css file and shows how to customize the way bootstrap looks
Adel
@AdelMahjoub
@cfunkles so if I follow your logic this is a third way to do it http://foundation.zurb.com/ and this is a forth way http://materializecss.com/
@cfunkles and for each library I count a different way to do it
@cfunkles consider I know absolutly nothing, can you tell me what is CSS ?
JD Tadlock
@jdtdesigns
@AdelMahjoub I'd skip the frameworks for right now and learn css. Without at least a basic understanding of the basics of html/css, frameworks will not make any sense and just give you headaches.
Adel
@AdelMahjoub
@jdtdesigns it was a question for @cfunkles , it seems he think that bootstrap and CSS are two different "things"
JD Tadlock
@jdtdesigns
There's plenty of free sources for learning html/css. Youtube is big one. Codecademy has a free course. For a little money you can buy great courses as well.

@cfunkles

Hello, i'm building a portfolio. I am not very impressed with how my bootstrap navigation bar looks. I know I can built one using bootstrap or CSS. Is there another way I can built one, knowing i'm still a beginner? If not not which way gives your better customization, bootstrap or CSS?

Charles Williams
@cfunkles
@AdelMahjoub not exactly what I was thinking
JD Tadlock
@jdtdesigns
@cfunkles Read my comment to @AdelMahjoub above
that's for you ;)
Charles Williams
@cfunkles
@AdelMahjoub I am only a few weeks in
JD Tadlock
@jdtdesigns
which means you need to dive into the basics and not skip around
i wish i had people telling me a direct path when i started
Charles Williams
@cfunkles
Yes, I am going in order the the camp
JD Tadlock
@jdtdesigns
fcc doesn't teach you much of anything
it's just to challenge you
the learning is up to you and how much you push yourself
Adel
@AdelMahjoub
for a total beginner my advice is to spend some money on books, tutorials are not good ressources for beginners
JD Tadlock
@jdtdesigns
@AdelMahjoub It depends on how you learn
some people don't learn at all from books
they need visuals
Adel
@AdelMahjoub
@jdtdesigns true, but a lot of book authors are very experienced, and their books full of useful content and advice
JD Tadlock
@jdtdesigns
@AdelMahjoub There's a ton of different great outlets for learning. Books are just one. ;)
Adel
@AdelMahjoub
@jdtdesigns agree with you, just a personel preference
Charles Williams
@cfunkles
Just be careful when assuming what another persons knowledge is. I admit I need build a few more basics. But for what I am trying to do I now have a better uderstanding
Adel
@AdelMahjoub
I'm not assuming anything, ask some other people what do they understand when they read this "If not not which way gives your better customization, bootstrap or CSS?"

var obj = {
  key: [2, 1, 5]
};

function square(number){
    return number*number;
}

function getSquaredElementsAtProperty(obj, key) {
     var x = [];
    if(!obj[key]){
        return x;
    }else if(obj[key].length === 0){
        return x;
    }else if(!Array.isArray(obj[key])){
        return x;
    }
    return square(obj[key]);

}
Tyler Moeller
@TylerMoeller
@cfunkles CSS will give you more customization than using Bootstrap's HTML classes alone
John Nunns
@johnnunns
trying to square all the numbers in the array
return square(obj[key]) returns NaN
Adel
@AdelMahjoub
@cfunkles because for me, bootstrap is CSS
John Nunns
@johnnunns
any advice here?
JD Tadlock
@jdtdesigns
@johnnunns back at it again lol

I wasn't sure if a high order function works here.
I'm in that group
looks a little inactive though compared to java and front end though so I cam here
my go to :)

@jdtdesigns
@johnnunns if me and tyler weren't here, you'd probably be fresh out of luck lol
John Nunns
@johnnunns
haha this is true!
JD Tadlock
@jdtdesigns
@johnnunns What's the challenge description again?
John Nunns
@johnnunns
I'll carry you guys in my resume as "Taught by:"
Write a function called "getSquaredElementsAtProperty".

Given an object and a key, "getSquaredElementsAtProperty" returns an array containing all the squared elements of the array located at the given key.

Notes:
* If the array is empty, it should return an empty array.
* If the property at the given key is not an array, it should return an empty array.
* If there is no property at the key, it should return an empty array.

var obj = {
  key: [2, 1, 5]
};
var output = getSquaredElementsAtProperty(obj, 'key');
console.log(output); // --> [4, 1, 25]

Starter Code :
function getSquaredElementsAtProperty(obj, key) {
  // your code here
}
so my code as of right now passes all the if it's not an array, no property, blah blah
