Isaiah Trembley
@IsaiahCT
I did that
what you see up there is me setting that origin to bottom rigght
Onome Sotu
@onomesotu
Good evening everyone
Can anyone help out with background image not covering entire screen?
Isaiah Trembley
@IsaiahCT
sure
Onome Sotu
@onomesotu
I set it to cover but there is white space below the image
Isaiah Trembley
@IsaiahCT
can I see the code?
Kaz Baig
@kbaig
@IsaiahCT I think that the problem is that .fridge is not the fridge that I see. .fridge-front is, but it doesn't contain the other parts of the fridge
Isaiah Trembley
@IsaiahCT
oh?
Kaz Baig
@kbaig
.fridge seems to just be the width of the viewport
Isaiah Trembley
@IsaiahCT
so you think that if I made the animation in fridge-front
it'll work?
Onome Sotu
@onomesotu
The background is set with javacript when data is gotten from the api
$('body').css({
            'background':'url(../pictures/' + weather + '.jpg)',
            'background-repeat': 'no-repeat',
            'background-position': 'center',
            'background-size': 'cover',
        });
Kaz Baig
@kbaig
@IsaiahCT well if you put everything inside it yeah probably
Isaiah Trembley
@IsaiahCT
because the fridge holds ALL of that, making it huge
meaning that it will run off of that iv spsace
while fridge-front is where all the action is
thanks
let me see if it will work
A-J Roos
@Asjas
@onomesotu Is the body set to height: 100vh;?
Onome Sotu
@onomesotu
@Asjas I didn't set any viewport height
If this helps: I have 2 monitors, the space is bigger in the bigger monitor
Isaiah Trembley
@IsaiahCT
that might be it
A-J Roos
@Asjas
You need to force the body to always be 100vh. Try it and let us know if it works
Onome Sotu
@onomesotu
but why is there any space at all? when it is a background image?
@Asjas How will it respond on a mobile view?
Isaiah Trembley
@IsaiahCT
@Asjas correct
A-J Roos
@Asjas
Because body initializes without any height.
Onome Sotu
@onomesotu
@Asjas oh
A-J Roos
@Asjas
It will make itself smaller on mobile. But you can always tweak the mobile view with @media query
Onome Sotu
@onomesotu
Is 100vh a way to force the background image to occupy the entire screen?
A-J Roos
@Asjas
It tells the body to take up the entire screen. The image should then take it all up as well
Onome Sotu
@onomesotu
@Asjas Great! it worked
Thank you @Asjas @IsaiahCT

@onomesotu Pleasure. Glad to have helped

@onomesotu
Another thing learned today :)
CSS can be tricky
A-J Roos
@Asjas
Yeah it can be. :)
Kaz Baig
@kbaig
When CSS works, it's beautiful and you love it
But when it doesn't...
Kevin K. Lee
@kevinkiklee
css is actually one of the hardest things to get right in development when you are starting out. make sure you try to understand the fundamentals well. i'm sure many of you guys have noticed how quickly css can get out of control even in a small project. in a bigger project, writing css becomes very important. i suggest looking into the BEM methodology.
Onome Sotu
@onomesotu
@kevinkiklee oh boy tell me about it
I will implement BEM in my next project
It sounds very professional
Kevin K. Lee
@kevinkiklee
one of the first fullstack apps i made had something like 5000 lines of css. it was insane.
yea, we used BEM at my previous job. it worked very well for us.
btw guys, i started from FCC like you guys about a year ago. now i'm a software engineer in NYC. keep going.
A-J Roos
@Asjas
@kevinkiklee Really? Wow that is awesome
Onome Sotu
@onomesotu
@kevinkiklee awesome stuff
Kevin K. Lee
@kevinkiklee
i did supplement my studies, but fcc is where i got started.
