That looks like magic to me :)
A-J Roos
@Asjas
Yeah I myself still have a ways to go before I can do that :)
Onome Sotu
@onomesotu
You cloned slack!!!
Kevin K. Lee
@kevinkiklee
and make sure you write up good documentation afterward:

@leanjunio
@kevinkiklee is clutch with these suggestions :)

@kevinkiklee
there are so many free resources online and many coding bootcamps. the market is becoming saturated a little. having a good portfolio is the most important thing to finding a job if you don't have a traditional CS background.
Lean Junio
@leanjunio
@kevinkiklee at what point in your coding journey were you able to replicate that project? Did you follow the curricilum that you posted and at the end of it you did that project?
Kevin K. Lee
@kevinkiklee
i went through app academy where the pace was extremely fast. so i had been coding for about 3 months or so when i wrote that.
maybe a little more. i started coding oct/nov last year. i wrote that in february.
Onome Sotu
@onomesotu
3 months after the bootcamp?
Kevin K. Lee
@kevinkiklee
no, 3 months after learning coding
Lean Junio
@leanjunio
wow, that sounds like a very intense bootcamp
Kevin K. Lee
@kevinkiklee
i know it sounds impossible, but it is absolutely 100% doable. i have seen hundreds of people do it.
Onome Sotu
@onomesotu
oh boy
@kevinkiklee you have just given me a smack up my butt to get my act together
Kevin K. Lee
@kevinkiklee
and, also, if you guys need proof, obviously you can check my github. you can easily see when i started coding, and when i wrote that project.
github is very very very important for this reason. it's your concrete proof of everything about yourself.
Onome Sotu
@onomesotu
Now I am saying this hear and now.. by the end of march next year, I will clone a fullstack app
Kevin K. Lee
@kevinkiklee
DO IT
Onome Sotu
@onomesotu
@kevinkiklee Yes, I have github up and running
Kevin K. Lee
@kevinkiklee
make sure you build up your github. the recruiters will take a look at your github.
Onome Sotu
@onomesotu
I only build locally
so ipush everything to my github
Kevin K. Lee
@kevinkiklee
start documenting everything on github. make sure you write good commit messages. the two most important things when you apply to a job are your linkedin profile and your github profile.
resume is almost secondary. they will immediately go to your linkedin and github first.

@chrisandsuch
@kevinkiklee that is great advice! Thank you big time!

Lean Junio
@leanjunio
@kevinkiklee can the same be achieved with the curricculum that you gave earlier
Onome Sotu
@onomesotu
Thanks for this man...
Kevin K. Lee
@kevinkiklee
absolutely. when you go through that, you should be able to make spotify, slack or netflix or whtaever you want.
it does go through the fundamentals well.
Lean Junio
@leanjunio
@kevinkiklee cool, thanks kevin

another advice: clone a well known non-trivial full-stack application. when you are on that phone screen, you have 15 seconds to explain your project. you DO NOT want to waste those 15 seconds saying "I created this dating app that matches people based on which side of the bed they like to sleep on. I swear, it's based on science!" No, you want to use those 15 seconds saying "I cloned Slack with a React frontend, a Rails backend, and utilized websocket protocol through Pusher API."
you want to use those 15 seconds talking about your skills, not explaining what your app does.
and we are coders. not designers. unfortunately, aesthetics matter. a recruiter, who is usually a non-technical person, will be drawn more towards the aesthetics of the wbsite, rather than how cleverly you solved some N+1 query in the backend, buried somewhere deep in the code. so, by cloning a fullstack application, you automatically skip the design step, where you don't have to worry about making it look nice. it's going to already look nice, because incredibly talented designers have already worked on that.
of course, do talk about how you solved the N+1 query during the interview with an engineer, but what is important is getting yourself to that interview.
Onome Sotu
@onomesotu
oh boy.. I just saw your portfolio page..
I was blown to shreds
Kevin K. Lee
@kevinkiklee
oh no no no, that's a template. i bought it for like $10. i should take that down actually. that website is not important.
Onome Sotu
@onomesotu
Looool... alright
