@cmccormack when we do class component is it must to have constructor and super, if so why. ?
Christopher McCormack
@cmccormack
Dec 12 2018 00:32
@coderkarma it does unless you are using class properties. I believe it is needed so you can use this.props
Pagnito
@Pagnito
Dec 12 2018 00:32
i read its needed to b able to mutate the class after u extend it
i might b remembering it wrong tho lol

Dec 12 2018 00:47

Christopher McCormack
@cmccormack
Dec 12 2018 00:49
classes are called using className on React elements
class is a reserved word in JavaScript

Dec 12 2018 00:49

Anything look inherently wrong here

<span
              id={name}
              onClick={selectable ? breadcrumbClicked : undefined}
            >
              <i className={icon} /> {name}
            </span>

The click function only gets event.target.id if you click on the name but not on the icon even though they're in the same span...

import React, { Component } from "react";

class Navbar extends Component {
  constructor(props) {
    super(props);
  }
  render() {
    return (
      <div>
        <Navbar bsStyle="pills">
          <NavItem>Home</NavItem>
        </Navbar>
      </div>
    );
  }
}

Christopher McCormack
@cmccormack
Dec 12 2018 00:52
@JLuboff do you get an event when it's clicked both ways?
there is no id on your icon
try using currentTarget maybe
Jason Luboff
@JLuboff
Dec 12 2018 00:53
@cmccormack The event is fired, but event.target.id is "" if clicking the icon, but {name} (whatever name is) if clicking the text
Why would I need an ID on the icon if its within the span though?
Christopher McCormack
@cmccormack
Dec 12 2018 00:53
yeah then try using currentTarget
because the click will bubble up regardless, and will carry info on the target that was clicked
Pagnito
@Pagnito

Christopher McCormack
@cmccormack
Dec 12 2018 00:56
@coderkarma the documentation for Navbar clearly shows there are only two options for the bsStyle prop - "default", "inverse"
@JLuboff nice - I've had the same issue with icons before

now how can i take this ["Lois" , "Peter" , "Bart", "&", "Lisa"] and make it into this ["Lois" , "Peter" , "Bart & Lisa"] in other words merge the last 3 strings into 1 string
i cant think of a method to do this
@Blauelf its your time to shine!
Blauelf
@Blauelf
Dec 12 2018 11:54
You want to join any elements with a & in between?
Why would you have a {name: '&'}? Looks like a problem at an earlier stage, which you now try to cover with this join operation.
Spyrantis Theodoros
@thodorisanta
Dec 12 2018 12:48
no no
i only want to add an & to merge the last two strings
basically the array i have on the start is this ["Lois" , "Peter" , "Bart", "Lisa"] without the & i just thought that i first need to add the & in the array at the right position and then i have to merge the last three strings

Question about inputs and spaces, yesterday one of my users had trouble entering an email address, nothing would pass the validation. Turns out she had entered a space before the email. Is it a good idea to trim inputs so that this doesn't happen or is that just user error and I should let it be?
Mohammed Boudad
@matrixersp

I am trying to use this package
it has async await code
Can someone simplify it , that it automatically run after 3 seconds
Blauelf
@Blauelf
Dec 12 2018 13:24
@thodorisanta You could also do something like
array1 = ["Lois" , "Peter" , "Bart", "Lisa"];
array2 = array1.slice(0, -2).concat(array1.slice(-2).join(" & "))
console.log(array2); // [ 'Lois', 'Peter', 'Bart & Lisa' ]

Hey guys, I'm trying to make a simple project with github jobs API. I get cors error. How can I solve this?
_getJobs = () => {
  const url="https://jobs.github.com/positions.json?search=node";
  return fetch(url)
    .then(response => response.json())
    .then(responseJson => {
      console.log(responseJson.origin);
    })
    .catch(error => {
      console.error(error);
    });
};

hey folks… i’m on the last cash register challenge in js algorithms and i think i got it working (with the worst code and syntax but w/e !! please ignore how many loops I have going lol) but I’ve got some sort of rounding issue?? its always 1penny short or something? or if i’m fundamentally wrong please let me know… thanks if anyone has time :)

https://repl.it/@jesskxuan/fcc-cashreg
challenge: https://learn.freecodecamp.org/javascript-algorithms-and-data-structures/javascript-algorithms-and-data-structures-projects/cash-register/

Nate Mallison
@NJM8
Dec 12 2018 14:37
@mirkancal It doesn't look like they require any sign up or anything to hit the api, what is the error?
@jesskxuan Due to the way JS does math you will sometimes get very very small decimals in your results. You will need to make sure you correctly round every operation.
another nice trick with this challenge is to get rid of the decimals to begin with and only work in whole numbers, then add them back in at the end
Jess Xuan
@jesskxuan
Dec 12 2018 15:01
@NJM8 thanks! I tried putting Math.round()s everywhere or in the conditions but it still seems to evaluate to the same incorrect answers… also one of the tests only needs 0.5 in change … if i were to get rid of the decimals and then add them on, i would need to write a function for just that anyway right?
Aditya
@ezioda004
Dec 12 2018 15:01

@jesskxuan Change line 78, from:

if (count + arr[1]/reversedEach[index] < changeNeeded)

To

if (count + arr[1]/reversedEach[index] <= changeNeeded)

And it should fix.

Jess Xuan

checkCashRegister(3.26, 100, [["PENNY", 1.01], ["NICKEL", 2.05], ["DIME", 3.1], ["QUARTER", 4.25], ["ONE", 90], ["FIVE", 55], ["TEN", 20], ["TWENTY", 60], ["ONE HUNDRED", 100]]) should return {status: "OPEN", change: [["TWENTY", 60], ["TEN", 20], ["FIVE", 15], ["ONE", 1], ["QUARTER", 0.5], ["DIME", 0.2], ["PENNY", 0.04]]}

https://repl.it/@jesskxuan/fcc-cashreg i'm literally 1 penny off lol i'm gonna keep working at it

all good!! i wrote some terrible terrible hacks and got it to pass all tests!!! :) thank you so much!!
(literally if the array was longer than 6… add 1 penny LMAO) but also i feel like this is okay cause people should not use js for this anyway or somethng right !! who knows ! anyway i can finally get my algorithm cert

Dec 12 2018 19:34
Hey guys, I'm having an issue with a reduce function. Here's the function:
const { active, inProgress, upcoming } = momentBriefs.reduce(
      (obj, brief, index) => {
        console.log('index', index, 'brief', brief, obj);
        if (brief.status === 'COMPLETE' && brief.startDate.isSame(todayMoment, 'week')) {
          obj.active.push(brief);
        } else if (brief.status === 'COMPLETE' && !brief.startDate.isSame(todayMoment, 'week')) {
          obj.upcoming.push(brief);
        } else if (brief.status === 'PUBLISHED') {
          obj.inProgress.push(brief);
        }
      },
      {
        active: [],
        inProgress: [],
        upcoming: [],
      },
    );
on second and further iterations the accumulator is undefined
Anyone know the reason why?
Brad
@bradtaniguchi
Dec 12 2018 19:48
@Keggatron You need to return what you want the obj to be for the next iteration
Just add a return obj at the end of the if else chain
also, on an unrelated note, I thought this was talking about underwear initially hehe
Keegan
@Keggatron
Dec 12 2018 19:50
thanks @bradtaniguchi that took me entirely too long to figure out.
Brad
@bradtaniguchi
Dec 12 2018 19:51
@Keggatron haha its fine, now you should remember right? :P When writting reduce I usually always put the return before writing any other code for 2 reasons. 1. So I don't forget, and 2. my linter complains if the "type" of the accumulator changes, which is what happens since after the first iteration it turns to undefined
Keegan
@Keggatron
Dec 12 2018 19:52
I should have known that to begin with. Still getting Reduce down. Thanks again man!
Brad

Hope the family stuff is nothing crazy alarming - my lady just dealt with a very close family death so I have been in a sense dealing with that as well
I haven't owned a TV honestly in like 15 years lol
Not true actually, I was given one which I had for about a year like 10 years ago
Jason Luboff
@JLuboff
Dec 12 2018 22:15

What can I say...I like my TV.. lol
We're replacing the one in our bedroom... currently its a 32" 720p TV... got a 49" 4K HDR10 120hz for $300.. couldn't really say no

Coolio
So after all my Redux learnings it seems that its dropping out of popularity fml
Check this out as I know you're doing react a bit lately

That was posted in March, and only reading it now, and the video is unavailable for some reason now?
After reading another article it looks really bare-bones/ not a full solution. Yea not a redux killer haha

I've just learned some good tricks for dispatching and using Redux as a whole so hopefully it's not gone anytime soon

I mean Redux implements the Flow architecture (if thats the right name for stuff), and architectures don't go away, they just don't become common practice if more specific solutions come out. Just like MVC hasn't gone away, just fallen out of place due to one thing or another

I just feel with Mobx getting more love Redux should be heading out in the next two years, it really is a tad complicated to grasp
Brad
@bradtaniguchi
Dec 12 2018 22:40
nvm hehe
Ah I just read about Mobx and it totally reminds me of ngrx.
Kinda funny how React+redux turned into ngrx, which is redux for Angular, and no React has Mobx which takes the "reactive" part from ngrx+Angular and applies it to React. haha
Simon Cordova
@gbsimon87
Dec 12 2018 22:45
no clue what ngrx is apart from what you've said - man, even the world of JS is huge
Brad
@bradtaniguchi
Dec 12 2018 22:47
Ngrx is basically redux ported over for Angular. A key part of angular is it's use of RxJs, which is a "Reactive Programing" lib. (sound familiar?) and ngrx uses it to it's fullest. In my quick skim of Mobx the observe stuff really stands out to me

Dec 12 2018 22:50
fair enough, and yeah I've heard of RxJS - my work stack is React with php mainly so never touch angular

I heard of people using RxJava, but idk what languages/frameworks use it beyond that. The idea of "reactive programming" was confusing to me at first, but now it seems like the "right way" to have classes "talk" to each other. Plus it works well with functional programming too.

Well...I officially hate SSRS.. the rendering is soooooo slow. My query runs in ~1.2 seconds...but it takes ~29 seconds for it to load the report
Simon Cordova

that sounds like it would kill me
I was using react native this past april and the rendering times were a motivational killer tbh

Its annoying...but it doesn't bother the end user so I guess I won't worry too much about it.. but looks like it could be due to the parameter data types

Is it generally thought of as "safer" to do !!myArray.length as opposed to just myArray.length when determining a boolean from that result?
