hey @zorfa191 unfortunately we are not that many here :) let’s hope the number will go up

I'm curious about the percentage of women in FCC :) because 66 of 12000 is not much now

@Arthaey
Jul 23 2015 14:39
hello!
@biancamihai we're almost certainly a minority, but also keep in mind that there's no way to browse a list of rooms on Gitter, and this room was only mentioned by FCC yesterday, and some women might not join because it says "Pair" in the room name and they aren't actively looking for someone to pair with, so they don't join just to hang out. ;)

@dogbot101 interesting article. Thanks for sharing. I'm kind of shocked at number 13.
Arthaey Angosii
@Arthaey
Jul 23 2015 16:43
@zaynaib: why do you find #13 surprising? women are often socialized (at least in the US, but I think elsewhere too) to be "nice" and "accomodating" and worry about the other person liking them. Those lessons are exactly contrary to negotiating hard.

@Arthaey I see your point. But it's still a $7000 difference and it doesn't make it right.
Arthaey Angosii
@Arthaey
Jul 23 2015 16:47
@zaynaib: oh, it's absolutely not "right"! It's just not surprising to me, sadly.

#13! Oh my! Why are we doing that to ourselves?

@meirad: I'd said, "women are often socialized (at least in the US, but I think elsewhere too) to be "nice" and "accomodating" and worry about the other person liking them. Those lessons are exactly contrary to negotiating hard."

Jul 23 2015 16:50
What can we do to combat this?
M.
@meirad
Jul 23 2015 16:51
@Arthaey So true. I know that I would have a difficult time starting out in a new field such as programming and feeling like I should get paid the same as a man. I know we all should but like you said, it's almost like we can't allow ourselves that.
Arthaey Angosii
@Arthaey
Jul 23 2015 16:52
@cdikibo: you mean, besides educate ourselves and anyone who will listen about (intersectional) feminism? ;)

@Arthaey :) Sounds like a good start to me.
Arthaey Angosii
@Arthaey
Jul 23 2015 16:53
I consider myself very lucky that pretty much all my male programmer friends are also self-identified feminists. Makes discussions so much easier, because we can actually discuss the real issues and re-hash 101-level things all the time.

Heyy...
Anyone here working on the Node tutorials?
I'm a bit confused with 'Juggling Async'
Zaynaib (Ola) Giwa
@zaynaib
Jul 23 2015 16:55
I feel like the only thing we can do is press on. I know this is very idealistic of me but we should create upward mobility for ourselves. Create bootcamps similar to blackgirlscode or women who code
Arthaey Angosii
@Arthaey
Jul 23 2015 16:55
@dshgna: I'm not to FCC's Node stuff yet, sorry!
@zaynaib: creating our own learning/teaching spaces is definitely a good step. But I think we have to do a "multi-pronged" sort of approach, or it will never really make a big difference in the landscape, y'know?
@zaynaib: we need to get men in on it too — wherever there is a systematic bias, those who are in the more privileged position need to be on board, or change won't really "stick". IMO.
M.
@meirad
Jul 23 2015 17:00
@Arthaey I totally agree. This chatroom alone is a great step in the right direction. I mean, I have never seen so many of us in the same place. Another good step though would be to start writing a blog or two. There are literally no articles or blogs on Google that are written by women programmers. For there to be change, we are going to have to have an online presence of so sort.
Arthaey Angosii
@Arthaey
Jul 23 2015 17:00
@meirad: what do you mean by "on Google"?
M.
@meirad
Jul 23 2015 17:00
@Arthaey Google Search
Last time I checked the only women programmer mentioned on the net was Ada Lovelace. That was a long time ago. We need more faces and names out there.

here's the first hit, which is Twitter-focused but also has links to their blogs when appropriate: http://mashable.com/2010/07/28/developer-hacker-women-twitter/

I help with front end stuff, but they need all kinds of help, from finding resources (that's what I collected all the twitter and fb links for), to helping decide what content goes in, to helping with outreach
I think there's a link on the site...let me find it

Jul 23 2015 19:12
@eak000 What sort of projects do they need help on with shescoding.org? Is it just the site itself or other things too?
Emily
@eak000
Jul 23 2015 19:13
Mostly the site, as it's an online resource, but it's not all coding they need help with. Content is a big one that's not coding. Let me see if I can get a better description from Nathalie
While I'm waiting to hear from her, I'd encourage anyone who's interested to get on their google group at least, and check out their github repo.
