@carwyn
Hello all, I'm also interested in hosting an instance, adding a translation and looking at the federation.

Hey, is there a need for python devs? (They are not listed on README)

Is there a way for me to enter a City in the get-together community instance? I know the lat/long but it won't let me add Lowbanks, ON Canada.
Fábio Tramasoli
@ilosamart_gitlab
hello, I want to contribute to the project
Tod Robbins
@todrobbins
hello all! curious whether GetTogether is utilizing ActivityStreams/ActivityPub?
Andres
@amazzoccone
Cool project! I like to contribute too!

BTW I've been trying to get more folks to use Gettogether than meetup for our gatherings
Hoping to add a few more "drips" to the bucket.
Craig Maloney
@craigmaloney
Gitter doesn't seem to have the activity updated on the sidebar anymore.

yosl > <@gitter_craigmaloney:matrix.org> BTW I've been trying to get more folks to use Gettogether than meetup for our gatherings

I started using Gettogether for our nonprofit. https://gettogether.community/junior-dev-struggle-bus-None/

@craigmaloney
yos1: Nice!
matrixbot
@matrixbot
yosl Is there an API like meetup.com's?
Craig Maloney
@craigmaloney
I don't think so, but I'm sure one would be welcome

Are there any plans related to Software Freedom Day? Our LUG noticed that there is a category for us, but we were wondering if there is an event category for SFD.

Hello, can anybody here help me. I cannot login. It seems my possible emails are not recognised nor do my passwords, which I can come up with, work. But I am an administrator for a room which needs some adjustments.
Craig Maloney
@craigmaloney
Have the private teams hit gettogether.community yet? I can't seem to figure out how to get them to work.
Michael Hall
@mhall119
Hey everyone, sorry for not responding to you in here, we moved away from Gitter onto Telegram a while ago: https://t.me/joinchat/AlruIk5yiQizaJ0YtYehzA
@craigmaloney yes, it landed there last week
Craig Maloney
@craigmaloney
Thank you. :)
I can't use Telegram, sadly
Michael Hall
@mhall119
@joeybadabing_gitlab I created a global SFD event for the LUGs organization, hoping to get a bunch of the LUGs on GetTogether to participate this year
Craig Maloney
@craigmaloney
(Gitter gives me the ability to follow along in my IRC client. ;))
Yes, I'm one of those people.
Michael Hall
@mhall119
Yeah, I lost that battle, now I have 3 Slacks, Telegram and a Gitter tab
Craig Maloney
@craigmaloney
Booooooo
I can understand the slacks
Michael Hall
@mhall119

Booooooo

Yeah, that's what my RAM said

Craig Maloney
@craigmaloney
But Telegram uses a phone number and a separate client, right?
(Funnily enough I've figured out how to get two of my Slack channels into weechat as well)
Michael Hall
@mhall119
yeah, it does
Craig Maloney
@craigmaloney
I had to get over my angst over Signal using my phone number. Not a fan.
I'd rather everyone used Jami, but then again I apparently like pushing rocks up hills.
Craig Maloney
@craigmaloney
Ugh, forgot that it wants you to use an Android phone.
Which means it'll likely get really cranky about not using my Google Voice number.
(Telegram)
Ah well.
paskalito
@paskalito
heyho, im a little confused.
  1. is gettogether federated or not yet?
  2. is there a list of instances one can use?
  3. it seems https://gettogether.community/ is inly for tec related things and for reuccuring non commercial events. is that the case? ( i couldnt find according info in terms and conditions...
  4. github says its version 0.9 https://gettogether.community/ says its .8 but it seems to be the oficial one. why is that?
paskalito
@paskalito
  1. why do you use unfree chatsystems/auth systems etc. but i read your on telegram now so the unfreedom has grown to an extent where i can't follow to communicate... :/
    However i hope i keep hearing something from the project! :)
Michael Hall
@mhall119
Hi @paskalito, sorry for the delayed response, we mostly use Telegram for chat
  1. GetTogether can federate events
  2. So far there is only one public instance, that is https://gettogether.community
  3. Gettogether.Community is open to any kind of team/event, it just happens to have caught on with technical teams first
  4. Ah, I hadn't updated the data on the page (it's stored in the datebase rather than in code). I've just removed that, since it's not really needed in an About page
GetTogether takes a pragmatic approach to open source. We like it, we prefer it, and we'll use it as much as we can, but not if it's detrimental. We use Telegram because that's what the majority of our users & contributors wanted to use.
Craig Maloney
@craigmaloney
(I have a differing opinion on Telegram, but that's why I stick here)
Michael Hall
@mhall119
We offer social authentication because (1) it means we're not responsible for protecting user passwords and (2) most of our users would prefer that rather than creating new accounts
But, again, we offer alternatives. We still have this Gitter (though I don't seem to get push notifications from it anymore), and we support creating local accounts if you don't want to use social auth. We even have a "Do Not Track" option on your account that will stop GetTogether from loading social media sharing buttons (and associated javascript that they can use for tracking).
Craig Maloney
@craigmaloney
I think something broke in the gitter config for getting notified about pushes
