Question: We use HdrHistograms for performance tests, most of which are automated. Is the a recommended approach for setting Thresholds that fail the tests ?

@dpwspoon I'd set some SLE (Service Level Execptation) thresholds to tests against. Usually stated as maximum allowed levels at given percentiles. E.g. max <= 10 sec. 99.99%'ile < 3 sec. 99.9%'ile < 1 sec. 90%'ile < 200msec

@dpwspoon my rule of thumb is: Always have a stated level for the max; always have a stated level for the "common case" (50% of 90%, same thing); and always have a stated level for at least one one step with at least 3 9s in it. Extra steps (at additional percentiles) are optional, but these three are the absolute minimum for testing a latency behavior requirement.
