    Ah, well, do you have coding experience in other languages?

    Context: We have quite a number of issues we'd like to tackle. Among them of course our flagship project arara where there is a wide range of open tasks like bringing the documentation from TeX to markdown (to have the manual available at https://islandoftex.gitlab.io/arara/) which is more like a TeX and pandoc job. But arara has also very demanding technical aspects like the implementation of our Kotlin DSL (to allow rules like https://gitlab.com/islandoftex/arara/-/blob/dsl-development/rules/arara-rule-latexengines.kts). So there are a lot of options to joining the island on any level of coding expertise.

    If you are up to a little challenge we would appreciate help on islandoftex/images/texdoc-online#2. texdoc-online is the software behind https://texdoc.org and it would be awesome to integrate some kind of rating of the suggestions. This would be its own little projects within texdoc-online as you could play around with the frontend and backend.

    A smaller beginner-friendly task could be islandoftex/texplate#9, improving TeXplate, our – unfortunately not too well known – templating tool. This could be something where you could work on a rather small codebase but maybe gain some experience in the Kotlin/Java world.

    So if you would say any of the open issues (https://gitlab.com/groups/islandoftex/-/issues) or the aforementioned tasks would be of interest to you, then we can add you as collaborator on the respective project 🙂

    And of course, if you tackle any of those tasks we would help you, review code, discuss details etc. Anything that helps onboarding 🙂
    If you have any other ideas/directions, feel free to simply share them. As Paulo Cereda wrote, we are here on the island to have fun 🙂

    @benfrank:matrix.org, I’ve got a fairly good understanding of Markdown, TeX and LaTeX. Language wise I’ve worked mainly in the usual languages (VB, Xamarin, Xcode, Swift etc)

    The documentation sounds like something right up my alley. If anything else that is documentation oriented comes up then feel free to let me know. :)

    I would be quite interested in working on Texdoc online as well.

    I’ll also keep an eye on the various projects to see if there’s anything I can help with. :)

    Oh, and for everyone coming here after Paulo's talk today: We missed to mention https://gitlab.com/islandoftex/archive which provides an archive of older (abandoned) TeX-related projects (hosted on SourceForge or other hosters where it is unclear whether old source code is well preserved).     What's the size of the IoT TeX Live Docker images? I'm considering using them for CI, but I'm also a little bit concerned about bandwidth, because on those systems unused images are pruned nightly.

    Ideally you wouldn't install all of TeX Live into a single layer as you are doing right now. The perfect layering would install packages with a similar update frequency in upper layers and base packages in lower layers.

    Unfortunately, TeX Live's dependency management is suboptimal, to say it politely, so applying this technique will be non-trivial.

    Putting weekly updates in their own layer should work out. There is an upper limit of 125 layers (or so) in a Docker image, but since TeX Live releases only live for a year there can be at most 52 weekly updates.

    I've just updated arara on TeX Live and noticed a difference. Currently TL has bib2gls v2.7, but I have bib2gls aliased to my local copy (2.8). Previously arara was using my development version (from the alias) but now its using the TL version.
    I'm not sure if maybe I also installed TL bib2gls when I was updating arara.

    IIRC the execution thingy refers to the first match in a path lookup. Maybe TL bib2gls was indeed updated and the TL path might be first, it was selected...
    How was bib2gls 2.8 referenced? As an alias?
    I don't know if aliases would work in a subprocess...

    Yes, it's aliased in my .bashrc as alias bib2gls=$HOME/programming/java/bib2gls/src/bin/bib2gls
