Looks like in order for the tool to work, we will need to automate the following using python:

  1. Reach out to the website
  2. Extract the necessary files
  3. Convert the text delimited files into something we can use in ArcMap

So it looks like we might be moving beyond a simple screen scrape

I just got off the phone again with the secretary of state. They do have a database but there is no public access even with university association. This data used to be available as a paid service but no longer do they offer that. The websites that I listed above just have the most recent data of 2016 and no data before that so that would change the scope of the project if we cannot have access to previous years. I am now going to look into other secretaries of state if they have more accessibility to the data and we could just change the area of concentration.

I can and see what he says. I have let Ron know as well and he said to look into the other sos offices but there are 50 of them and may take me time.

import csv
import urllib
urllib.urlretrieve("ftp://sosftp.sos.state.oh.us/free/OnlineBusinessReports/WI0050R.txt", "forProfitBiz.csv")
that will download the text file and put the data into a csv file
anyone know how to run a geocoder in Python?
