@jrthib yeah it's probably because you have a lot of concurrent array updates. You can shut versioning off: http://mongoosejs.com/docs/guide.html#versionKey, but this is not recommended because versioning prevents you from shooting yourself in the foot by say editting "doc.comments.3.text" in one place and then saving, while some other code overwrote the entire comments array "doc.comments = []". I'd recommend you investigate your code and see why this might be happening - it may be a case where versioning is being a little too overprotective, but it may also be indicative of an issue in your code

populate is a little messy but the theory is simple enough - it just does a query on all the _ids
