Yeah, a few keyboards have that label, but it's traditionally the option key and it can be confusing to call it alt because of the way it doesn't always map to windows/unix keyboards. (My 2017 MBP calls it option.) Regardless, Save As is definitely shift-cmd-S by long-standing usage.

@nkerman
Hope this isn't a dumb question; is there any/a good way to change the markdown/markup flavor - i.e. to MarkdownXL?
Franklin Yu
@FranklinYu
@nkerman What’s MarkdownXL? A quick Google search wasn’t very helpful.
Nat Kerman
@nkerman
@FranklinYu it's a markup/markdown version used in i.e. Ulysses which supports footnotes, annotations, highlighting with ::text::
However I was just wondering if it's possible to change the markdown language with macdown uses?
Thanks
Franklin Yu
@FranklinYu
About the Alt key, I would prefer to call it Option key on macOS. Just personal preference though.
Franklin Yu
@FranklinYu
@nkerman Find out more in preference panel. Footnote is supported; what’s annotation and highlighting?

ahoy folks. i did a quick search through the sourcecode for transparency features. it seems there's an opacity attribute in the themes. i'm totally new to the editor, but i'm very eager to switch to an editor supporting window transparency - i do a lot of re-drafting, and it is so helpful on small screens to be able to see previous drafts
without investigating the opacity attr further, is this feature implementable in MacDown?
Franklin Yu
@FranklinYu
You mean the entire application is semi-transparent?
resistor4u
@resistor4u
@FranklinYu yes
But dialog prompts, the preference panes, and other menu windows are not transparent / opaque. Only the editor windows have the transparency feature. MacOS Terminal and iTerm have these features, and TextMate2 used to have it too.
resistor4u
@resistor4u
IMHO, it seems many users consider transparency a cosmetic frill, but I have come to rely on it for the practical reason that laptop screens are small, and being able to "see through" the current editor to a previous draft means I can revise and redraft without having to alternate through screens. I cannot be the only one who sees the practical value of transparency features.
Franklin Yu
@FranklinYu
I have no idea how to implement it so we’ll need to research. Please create an issue for this feature request and describe your use case, as well as any suggested implementation details.

It looks like MacDown can't run on Catalina as it's not signed?
I've tried installing both via the zip download and homebrew
image.png
That basically says it can't be opened because the developer can't be verified.
Oh sorry, ignore me.. It's possible in the security settings to tell it to open it
Steve Nicholson
@SSteve
I don’t know about Catalina, but in earlier versions of macOS when you right-click an application you get a dialog that allows you to go ahead and open the program. After that it opens normally.

@matrixbot
Adrià I can confirm it's working on Catalina

Hi I just installed MacDown! How do I install the command line (shell) utility? I click on the 'install' button in the preferences and nothing happens

Has anyone used MacDown as the external editor for nvAlt? I've set that up, but keep getting this error: "The document could not be saved. The file has been changed by another application."

Franklin Yu
@FranklinYu
@haroldship Are you still having issues with installing shell utility? If so please be more specific.

Anyone has an idea (or seen this), why MacDown is taking 100% CPU?
I only have exactly 1 md-doc open - on a recent MacbookPro (MacOS 10.15.6 (19G73), 2,6 GHz 6-Core Intel Core i7, 32GB RAM)

Hey All,

I got a silly question. Whenever I type in the editor, the preview jumps to the top of the page. Is there a setting that enables me to have the preview stay at the exact location which I have scrolled to? Linking the scrolling in the editor to preview doesn't really work either as I always end up in a section completely different to the one I am editing. I think its due to pictures and tables having different heights than in the editor.

Best,
Philipp

Good day all - Does anyone know if there is a way to detach the view pane from the editor? I want to be able to share the view in a zoom and hide the editor pane. Thanks!

The easiest thing might be to share only part of your screen with zoom and select the view pane only.

Will we get a release for Big Sur?
Raymond Peck
@rpeck

I'm loving MacDown after being a Mou user for a long time. Thanks for it!

A few wishes:

  1. It does a lot better job than Mou at keeping the editor and preview in sync, but this breaks down when there are <!-- --> comments in the .md.
  2. The reason I have comments in the Markdown is that I'm writing a small book along with a presentation together in the same document. I comment out the slides and then extract them with a few lines of awk to a new Markdown file. :-) So... presentation features would be a great addition! I used to use DeckSet, but it doesn't do MathML or graphviz, both of which I need.
  3. It'd be great to be able to scale images and graphviz charts!
  4. Layout is a bit problematic in landscape mode. It's usable for my slides, but barely.

THANKS!

Will we get a release for Big Sur?

As an additional point, will there be a Universal release soon-ish?

Morane
@Morane
In Big Sur, there is a problem of icon. Documents created do not get a MacDown icon, but often a TextEdit icon !Also, it is impossible to save a MacDown document of a previous version. One have to copy/paste the content in a new document.

Lovely Markdown is light and fast startup time. I seems to use memory 2x over Haroopad but that is not an issue. Thanks the author much indeed. I will use Markdown for surfing/viewing many .md files daily
Does any one use this on Apple Silicon native?
John Muccigrosso
@Jmuccigr
I notice that my file types for .md files (which MacDown is set to open as the default app) show up in the Finder as "md 文件". That seems inappropriate for my English-language system. I also wonder if this is goofing up quicklook in Catalina. If the extension is "markdown", the file type gets reported as "Markdown" and ql works fine, but it's not working on ".md".

@uranusjr Thanks for the awesome work! Same question for M1 MBP user here.

I love MacDown! One thing I really want is a toolbar button/menu item to create a new table--the table syntax is so complex and fussy, and frankly I seem to always forget it, then have to look up on the help page. All it would need to do is put down maybe a 3x2 table, with the headers, and then a left, centered, right justified column.
@PeterKieu I have been using MacDown without issue on my M1 -- as long as it works on Rosetta, I don't see any pressing need for native--it is not a huge hungry application, and M1 Macs run even Intel software quite fast.

@trueschool
Hi All -- first off, I just want to express extreme gratitude for this project. MacDown has been my favorite markdown editor for at least 5 years running.
Secondly, I discovered a (possibly obscure) bug that I'd like to share:
When I drop an image file onto the editor, MacDown adds a HUGE block of text (maybe corresponding to every byte of data in the JPEG file?) into my document. There's no way to undo, and I have to select+scroll down the whole way to fix the issue.
LeyiCui-Angel
@LeyiCui-Angel
Hi all! I don't know if it's meant to be this way but if I write an ordered list right after an unordered list, the ordered list is still unordered. Is this a bug?
Dan Marston
@Dan-dilion
Hi, is there a way to get spelling correction in the editor for MacDown? I am dyslexic an I heavily rely on spellcheckers
Dan Marston
@Dan-dilion
D'you know what I've just worked it out! You can right click on the editor and turn on "correct spelling while you type". Sorry to bother you all.
Perhaps that should be on by default tho. Just a thought
