@abased
i have the same question @legoming , how do you do graphs in macdown
Jet CHEN
@legoming
It's great to draw chart/flow with mermaid or graphviz in MacDown, but there's some annoying issue in mermaid's old version. @abased . I just find @Gowa2017 is working on issue #1126

Just discovered this good editor. Is there a way (or plugin) to display word count/stats for current line or selected text? It's a key feature I look for in a text editor

@matrixbot
Adrià Hi,
I'm the new one typining from a matrix.org bridge. Hope I can contribute here!

While poking around during issue #1150 I noticed that the insertion point in the MacDown editor window stops blinking when a menu is pulled down. I don't expect that to happen in a document, so I tried some other apps. One other place I see the insertion point animation freeze is in text input forms, like the To: field in Apple Mail. In contrast, when the insertion point is in the message body, the insertion point keeps blinking when a menu is pulled down. I am curious if this is related to #1150 somehow.

Can someone recommend a Markdown editor that's being maintained? Macdown has some parse bugs that are making it impossible for me to use it.
Doug Weathers
@gdunge
Have you posted a bug report on the Github page? They can’t fix it if they don’t know about it.
Rob Thorne
@torenware
Mostly I wanted to make sure that there was development, since this group is so quiet. But I'll do that.
Doug Weathers
@gdunge
Yes, it's quiet here. It's a bit livelier on the Github project page. If you still want a markdown suggestion, have you looked at Highland 2? WAYYYY better than Highlander 2.
Rob Thorne
@torenware
Best combination I've found is to use Atom as the editor, with the packages language-markdown, markdown-writer, and markdown-preview. The parser is excellent, the dialect of markdown is usable, and the viewer is more reliable than the one bundled with MacDown. I'll occasionally check what does not get past the MacDown parser/viewer, and log those as issues.
Doug Weathers
@gdunge
Atom is cool, good for coding. As a general-purpose editor I find it too slow and way to much unable to print.

@FranklinYu
Current issue is that I currently don’t have a lot of bandwidth to tackle difficult problems, so I would be working more on low-hanging fruits, like reviewing existing pull requests and making new releases. I’m also trying to allow more people to participate in translation of languages that I don’t know.

Can you add a "Save As" to the File menu... this would pop up the Save dialog and allow you to save a "duplicate" in a specific location. OR have Duplicate pop up the name/tag/location box that pops up so you can rename and change the location of the file at the same time?
Also, I had some hidden characters when I copy/pasted stuff that ended up breaking the real time colorization in the Editor pane. Some sort of indication of a parse failure would be helpful to indicate where it is (or the ability in settings to turn on visible special characters)
Franklin Yu
@FranklinYu
@hmenzi Any example of such hidden character?
Morane
@Morane
To "add" Save As, just press Alt when selecting commande Save
John Muccigrosso
@Jmuccigr
@Morane There's no Alt key on a Mac keyboard. :-) The standard modifier key for "Save as..." is shift. So Shift-Cmd-S usually does it.
Morane
@Morane
Sorry, John, but there is a Alt key on the Apple keyboard (both corded and bluetooth). It is between Ctrl and Cmd and Alt is written on. It works. No need of Shift and Cmd.
I use it frequently :-)
John Muccigrosso
@Jmuccigr
Yeah, a few keyboards have that label, but it's traditionally the option key and it can be confusing to call it alt because of the way it doesn't always map to windows/unix keyboards. (My 2017 MBP calls it option.) Regardless, Save As is definitely shift-cmd-S by long-standing usage.
Nat Kerman
@nkerman
Hope this isn't a dumb question; is there any/a good way to change the markdown/markup flavor - i.e. to MarkdownXL?
Franklin Yu
@FranklinYu
@nkerman What’s MarkdownXL? A quick Google search wasn’t very helpful.
Nat Kerman
@nkerman
@FranklinYu it's a markup/markdown version used in i.e. Ulysses which supports footnotes, annotations, highlighting with ::text::
However I was just wondering if it's possible to change the markdown language with macdown uses?
Thanks
Franklin Yu
@FranklinYu
About the Alt key, I would prefer to call it Option key on macOS. Just personal preference though.
Franklin Yu
@FranklinYu
@nkerman Find out more in preference panel. Footnote is supported; what’s annotation and highlighting?

@resistor4u
ahoy folks. i did a quick search through the sourcecode for transparency features. it seems there's an opacity attribute in the themes. i'm totally new to the editor, but i'm very eager to switch to an editor supporting window transparency - i do a lot of re-drafting, and it is so helpful on small screens to be able to see previous drafts
without investigating the opacity attr further, is this feature implementable in MacDown?
Franklin Yu
@FranklinYu
You mean the entire application is semi-transparent?
resistor4u
@resistor4u
@FranklinYu yes
But dialog prompts, the preference panes, and other menu windows are not transparent / opaque. Only the editor windows have the transparency feature. MacOS Terminal and iTerm have these features, and TextMate2 used to have it too.
resistor4u
@resistor4u
IMHO, it seems many users consider transparency a cosmetic frill, but I have come to rely on it for the practical reason that laptop screens are small, and being able to "see through" the current editor to a previous draft means I can revise and redraft without having to alternate through screens. I cannot be the only one who sees the practical value of transparency features.
Franklin Yu
@FranklinYu
I have no idea how to implement it so we’ll need to research. Please create an issue for this feature request and describe your use case, as well as any suggested implementation details.
resistor4u
@resistor4u
done!

It looks like MacDown can't run on Catalina as it's not signed?
I've tried installing both via the zip download and homebrew
image.png
That basically says it can't be opened because the developer can't be verified.
Oh sorry, ignore me.. It's possible in the security settings to tell it to open it
Steve Nicholson
@SSteve
I don’t know about Catalina, but in earlier versions of macOS when you right-click an application you get a dialog that allows you to go ahead and open the program. After that it opens normally.
matrixbot
@matrixbot
Adrià I can confirm it's working on Catalina
hmenzi
@hmenzi
@FranklinYu regarding hidden characters... spaces, tabs, newlines... specifically I see that null characters are what is breaking the rendering

Hi I just installed MacDown! How do I install the command line (shell) utility? I click on the 'install' button in the preferences and nothing happens

Has anyone used MacDown as the external editor for nvAlt? I've set that up, but keep getting this error: "The document could not be saved. The file has been changed by another application."

Franklin Yu
@FranklinYu
@haroldship Are you still having issues with installing shell utility? If so please be more specific.

Anyone has an idea (or seen this), why MacDown is taking 100% CPU?
I only have exactly 1 md-doc open - on a recent MacbookPro (MacOS 10.15.6 (19G73), 2,6 GHz 6-Core Intel Core i7, 32GB RAM)
