Ah I had 2.0.0, changed the board url to http://arduino.esp8266.com/stable/package_esp8266com_index.json and installed 2.3.0 and it compiled and uploaded. Now I just need to get the hardware working...

I've tried the Neo800KbpsMethod, NeoEsp8266Uart800KbpsMethod, and NeoEsp8266BitBang800KbpsMethod but the LEDs aren't responding as I'd expect-lights are staying white or a pastel. Following pin out from https://images-na.ssl-images-amazon.com/images/I/71bO-oDutlL._SL1600_.jpg

Try the 400 version.
How do you power the strip of leds?
And please read the wiki about the pin assignment as some methods ignore the pin you pass and are hardware defined

Powered with a 3.3v, 3A power supply. May be a little underpowered, waiting for my logic shift board to come in so I can use my 5V, 10A supply

Leds need 5v power but often the 3.3v logic from esp8266 will still control them

I'm getting better colors at 5V but it still doesn't seem to be following the program. For example, I'm running NeoPixelFunLoop with NeoEsp8266Dma800KbpsMethodand i am getting random strobes from the LEDs, with NeoEsp8266Dma400KbpsMethod it is white and strobing. Same behavior for UART.

Sounds like you will need the level shifter for 3.3v to 5v logic.

Thanks, should show up Sunday (thanks amazon prime) and I'll give it another go then
