Andre Kramer
@BCDav There are several examples you could start from. sample_mission_loader.py which records MP4 for example (in Malmo/samples/Python_examples).
Thanks, I'll give those a try
Andre Kramer
Hi, Here's a link to the official 2018 MARLÖ Competition announcement: https://www.facebook.com/MicrosoftResearchCam/posts/2457928897568422. Congratulations to the winners and also thanks to all those that took part!

having trouble finding the java client documentation, any help?
Steven Werner
having trouble finding the sendCommand options: docs say:
See the mission handlers documentation for the permitted commands for your chosen command handler.
Steven Werner
found this, please some one let me know if there are any more extended commands..
Steven Werner
found this: https://github.com/Microsoft/malmo/blob/master/Schemas/MissionHandlers.xsd
not sure how to enable HumanLevelCommands in java client, seems like its not available?
Steven Werner
found this as well :) malmo/Schemas/MissionHandlers.html#element_ObservationFromFullInventory ok ignore all the above :)
Steven Werner
Hello all, is there a way to start the mission with a specified food & health level?
Steven Werner
agent_host.sendCommand( "chat /effect @p minecraft:hunger 5 201"); ok, got it
if possible in the mission xml please someone let me know :) thx
I have tried installing Malmo, but when I run the python examples I get the error:
import MalmoPython
ImportError: DLL load failed
I have tried going through the fixes suggested to others but are having trouble getting it to work. It definitely seems there is a general problem with loading the DLL's, since running it through Dependency Walker I get an error opening each DLL. But I have no clue how to fix this, have C:\Program Files (x86)\CodeSynthesis XSD 4.0\bin and C:\Program Files (x86)\CodeSynthesis XSD 4.0\bin64 in my path, and the CodeSynthesis folder.
Andre Kramer
@CecilieGreisgaard Hi Cecilie, Could you open an issue on GitHub malmo please? https://github.com/Microsoft/malmo/issues
Andre Kramer
@CecilieGreisgaard My hunch would be the python version. It should be python 3.6 on Windows.
  • Where:
    Build file 'C:\Users\jagat\Downloads\malmo-master\malmo-master\Minecraft\build.gradle' line: 18

  • What went wrong:
    A problem occurred evaluating root project 'Minecraft'.

    version.properties file is missing - this is created automatically by CMake. If you are building from source, make sure you have built the full source tree, not just the Minecraft folder.

  • Try:
    Run with --stacktrace option to get the stack trace. Run with --info or --debug option to get more log output.

unable to run the Minecraft file for malamo

@Jagateesvaran Are you running launchClient.sh or launchClient.bat when you get the error?

does one need to buy/own a copy of minecraft to use malmo or is it included in malmo?
Andre Kramer
@lorenzgerber Everything you need to get started should be in the git hub README: https://github.com/Microsoft/malmo

I am writing the tutorials in java, to make it easier to use in my project. But, I'm having trouble understanding this part and moving on to java. I know these lines read the json array, but what does each one do exactly?
msg = world_state.observations[-1].text
observations = json.loads(msg)
grid = observations.get(u'floor3x3', 0)
Andre Kramer
@carolhcs Parse the json from the last observation text and get the 'floor3x3' attribute from it.
Carol Salvato
Thanks @AndKram
I am trying to install malno using docker toolbox. After I finish starting minecraft and jupyter notebook, I try to open the link http://localhost:6901/?password=vncpassword
to open minecraft on Google Chorme browser but I'm getting ERR_CONNECTION_REFUSED. How do I fix this?

I'm installing malmo for the 1st time and can't get it to work on a mac running OSX mojave 10.4.4. When I run

python3 -c 'import malmo.minecraftbootstrap; malmo.minecraftbootstrap.download()'

I get an error saying

Traceback (most recent call last):
File "<string>", line 1, in <module>
ModuleNotFoundError: No module named 'malmo'

Can anyone give me advice on how to fix this issue? Thanks!

Linjie Xu
Make sure that your pip matches your python.
Andre Kramer
@hoelyhuy Did you pass -p 6901 to the docker run command (as on page https://github.com/Microsoft/malmo/blob/master/scripts/python-wheel/README.md)?
Is there a way to have a custom world without writing xml file for it? For example, I want to create my own maze. Is there a way to build it in game, for example? Writing all the blocks with xml seems really tedious
Manuel Rodríguez de la Coba

Hi everyone, I've installed MalmoEnv in Google Cloud Platform and I'm trying to start it using python3 -c "import malmoenv.bootstrap; malmoenv.bootstrap.launch_minecraft(9000). However it remains stuck in the following line **[17:12:25] [Client thread/INFO]: [STDOUT]: CLIENT request state: DORMANT
[17:12:25] [Realms Notification Availability checker #1/INFO]: Could not authorize you against Realms server: Invalid session id
[17:12:25] [Client thread/INFO]: [STDOUT]: CLIENT enter state: DORMANT

Building 95% > :runClient**. I don't know whats wrong. Could anyone help me please?

Andre Kramer
@u-pi Not in Malmo but possibly another Minecraft Mod could be used to create the world.
@Lolits Hi, you've launched Minecraft and it's waiting for the agent to connect. You can use another shell/terminal session to do: python3 -c 'from malmo.run_mission import run; run()'
@AndKram thanks for your answer :)
Manuel Rodríguez de la Coba
@AndKram Thanks a lot
Kirill Bobyrev

Hi everyone! I'm trying to build Malmo and I'm stuck at Step 7 in "Building on Linux" guide while getting an error indicating nonexistent file:

ninja: error: 'Malmo/src/JavaWrapper/com/microsoft/msr/malmo/AgentHost.java', needed by 'Malmo/src/JavaWrapper/CMakeFiles/MalmoJavaJar.dir/java_compiled_MalmoJavaJar', missing and no known rule to make it

Is there any way I could fix it?

Andre Kramer
@kirillbobyrev It's simpler to use a pre-built version (such as the malmo pip package) as in "Getting Started" on https://github.com/Microsoft/malmo. If that's not possible you could follow the build instructions (https://github.com/Microsoft/malmo/blob/master/doc/build_linux.md) and look at the docker build examples in malmo/scripts/docker. Looks like it's failing to create the Java wrappers for AgentHost for some reason.
Kirill Bobyrev

@AndKram Thank you! I was actually following the guide you have linked.

I have tried again with Makefiles (instead of Ninja) and I didn't have this error anymore. I had the other one, though, but that is probably related to Boost being newer than the one used by developers.

Because I'm using system Boost. Should probably try to build the earlier version.
Sean O'Sullivan

I am trying to follow the build instructions for linux at https://github.com/Microsoft/malmo/blob/master/doc/build_linux.md I have got to the point where I try to run the command : "cmake -DBoost_INCLUDE_DIR=/home/$USER/boost/boost_1_66_0/include -DCMAKE_BUILD_TYPE=Release .."

which fails giving me the error:

CMake Error at /usr/local/share/cmake-3.11/Modules/FindBoost.cmake:2044 (message):
Unable to find the requested Boost libraries.

Boost version: 1.66.0

Boost include path: /home/sean/boost/boost_1_66_0/include

Could not find the following static Boost libraries: boost_python36

I also tried to install using pip which gave the following : ERROR: Could not find a version that satisfies the requirement malmo (from versions: none)
ERROR: No matching distribution found for malmo
Pratik Mehta

Hi, I'm trying to install on mac OSX using instructions on https://github.com/Microsoft/malmo/blob/master/doc/build_macosx.md.

When I run cmake, I get the following error:
-- The C compiler identification is unknown
-- The CXX compiler identification is unknown
-- Check for working C compiler: /usr/bin/cc
-- Check for working C compiler: /usr/bin/cc -- broken
CMake Error at /usr/local/Cellar/cmake/3.10.2/share/cmake/Modules/CMakeTestCCompiler.cmake:52 (message):

It fails with the following output:

Run Build Command:"/usr/bin/make" "cmTC_e34d9/fast"
xcrun: error: invalid active developer path (/Library/Developer/CommandLineTools), missing xcrun at: /Library/Developer/CommandLineTools/usr/bin/xcrun

CMake will not be able to correctly generate this project.
Call Stack (most recent call first):

Any idea why cmake is complaining?
Pratik Mehta
It was an issue with xcode, fixed.
Andre Kramer
@seanysull_gitlab Do you have the boost library for Python installed for your version of Python (3.6 from looking at your error)? You could have a look at the docker build scripts for your version of Linux. https://github.com/microsoft/malmo/tree/master/scripts/docker. There is a good chance that Python lib has another name e.g. just boost_python3 so you could check what's installed and modify the CMakefile.txt appropriately:
@stevenwernercs Were you or anyone here able to find a list of strings that AgentHost.sendCommand takes in?
Andre Kramer
@sasinha It depends on whether commands are discrete or continuous. One such list is in https://github.com/microsoft/malmo/blob/master/MalmoEnv/malmoenv/commands.py
Sean O'Sullivan

@AndKram Thanks for your reply, I changed the CMakeLists.txt (I thought this was what you were referring to when you saidCMakeFile.txt) to what you suggested (with "python" instead of python3) and it builds successfully, however, after building i tried to run the command ctest and the majority of the tests fail:
