Hey all! Make sure you are at chat.montcode.com and that you see the video box. If you are still being forwarded to gitter, check the Facebook group for how to fix.
Jonathan Herman
@lantech19446
May 17 2016 20:47

David Castner
@davidjcastner
May 17 2016 20:48
Also after signing into gitter, if you still see the button "Sign in to chat" on chat.montcode.com, refresh the page

Jonathan Herman
@lantech19446
May 17 2016 20:55
it's not difficult the MIS guys shut them all down correctly we just unplug them package them load them into the truck it moves them to the new building and then we rerack them run the cables etc MIS doublechecks everything and boots it up
Victor
@VictorHall
May 17 2016 20:55

Lily Romano
@Lilyheart
May 17 2016 21:24
Thanks @davidjcastner @VictorHall I'm not sure, but how to best utlize dev tools is a list on my already growing list of topics to cover! I'll focus on that and let you know when I find something.
It still has a few bugs, but here is my personal profile I made for FCC back over the winter break. http://codepen.io/lilyheart/full/pgRdwJ/

May 17 2016 21:29
Cool quote generator lil, I have to see how you tackled that hide/show problem I had later.
Jonathan Herman
@lantech19446
May 17 2016 21:30
That's pretty cool Lily, the use of JS makes my head spin. I'm thinking I may have to try the code academy lesson on it.
Lily Romano
@Lilyheart
May 17 2016 21:31
I haven't used it myself, but I hear Khan has some great js information as well. Here is a link directly to that Free Resources slide http://montcode.github.io/welcome-to-fcc/#/5/2
Jonathan Herman
@lantech19446
May 17 2016 21:32
thank you, I got through the jquery section with very few problems, nothing I've even tried has worked on codepen so I've just figured my way around it.
Lily Romano
@Lilyheart
May 17 2016 21:33
jquery does make life (and javascript) a LOT easier. I am currently doing a udemy course and I have to keep forcing myself to use basic javascript so that I can remain familiar with it.
Jonathan Herman
@lantech19446
May 17 2016 21:35
it seems like it would but it's just making my life a pain right now because everything comes back with some sort of error and the errors never have any real detail. I tried using the youtube player api I copy and pasted the exact code youtube says I need to set it up and it says unexpected ending or some weird thing lol
on an up note I think I'm just about ready to turn it in if people would like to see it.
David Castner
@davidjcastner
May 17 2016 21:38
ya lets see it!!!
Lily Romano
@Lilyheart
May 17 2016 21:39
Some of that could be codepen as there are a few limitations of using that site. Feel free to share troubles on here and we can try to figure it out.
Robert Maylie
@rmaylie9560
May 17 2016 21:39
@VictorHall how's learning ruby treating ya? It seems pretty powerful.
Jonathan Herman
@lantech19446
May 17 2016 21:39
and I should say that Lily has been a tremendous help with a couple parts of this page.
David Castner
@davidjcastner
May 17 2016 21:40
@lantech19446 loving it, which snippet cause the video to autoplay?
Jonathan Herman
@lantech19446
May 17 2016 21:41
it's actually a url tag you just add ?rel=0&autoplay=1 to the ID
David Castner
@davidjcastner
May 17 2016 21:41
ah nice use of the youtube api!
Lily Romano
@Lilyheart
May 17 2016 21:41
That’s the same as on this page. The stream autoplays. If the stream isn’t running yet it gives the countdown.
Jonathan Herman
@lantech19446
May 17 2016 21:42
@davidjcastner believe it or not I couldn't get the api working it takes a lot of JS and it just wouldn't function for me this is all done with embed and I used element ID and css to position them
Robert Maylie
@rmaylie9560
May 17 2016 21:43
Nice Johnny!
Jonathan Herman
@lantech19446
May 17 2016 21:44
thanks man, i think the slideshow I found for liar is like the crowning achievement on the page.
Robert Maylie
@rmaylie9560
May 17 2016 21:45
Hands down. I'll have to check out how you coded that later. It's super cool
Lily Romano
@Lilyheart
May 17 2016 21:45
You could move the div close tag that is below the more button to the end of the page. That would bring your opacity makin’ background all the way down.
Jonathan Herman
@lantech19446
May 17 2016 21:47
for some odd reason that just moved my video too, I must have margins set somewhere else
Robert Maylie
@rmaylie9560
May 17 2016 21:48
Is the live feed over?
Lily Romano
@Lilyheart
May 17 2016 21:48
Moving the right div? Only thing I can think of
@rmaylie9560 pretty much. Unless we come up with some question that needs it xD
Robert Maylie
@rmaylie9560
May 17 2016 21:49
aww
Jonathan Herman
@lantech19446
May 17 2016 21:49
fixed, I had a 50px left margin on the slideshow that I'm assuming conflicted with that box because as soon as I removed it it was good
David Castner
@davidjcastner
May 17 2016 21:51
@Lilyheart It might be fun to get a raidcall going or group skype or another service
Robert Maylie
@rmaylie9560
May 17 2016 21:51
annnnnnnd that's why I hate css. What ever happened to those awesome pure html pages! HTML, JavaScript, and something on the backend!
done.
Jonathan Herman
@lantech19446
May 17 2016 21:52
lol you're talking about like what I was doing on geocities with html 3 lol
Robert Maylie
@rmaylie9560
May 17 2016 21:52
Absolutely!
Lily Romano
@Lilyheart
May 17 2016 21:52
css is tricky as you need to get a good handle on the box model. Learning to use the inspect tool and console helps with this greatly!
Robert Maylie
@rmaylie9560
May 17 2016 21:53
whats raidcall?
Jonathan Herman
@lantech19446
May 17 2016 21:53
ironically I've found css to be so much more me friendly
David Castner
@davidjcastner
May 17 2016 21:54
its a group chat service (for games, but it might be multipurpose)
Robert Maylie
@rmaylie9560
May 17 2016 21:54
And tips lil?
nice.
Lily Romano
@Lilyheart
May 17 2016 21:55
@rmaylie9560 They are on a list of topics to go over during MontCode. I don’t have anything prepared tip-wise today as it’s something that can and should go pretty deep in.
Jonathan Herman
@lantech19446
May 17 2016 21:59
just out of curiosity does anyone know how long it takes to get feedback from the actual FCC on these projects?
Lily Romano
@Lilyheart
May 17 2016 21:59
Your projects will only be reviewed once you apply for certification.
That means you can submit now and continue to go back as you learn (especially great for the profile project).
Jonathan Herman
@lantech19446
May 17 2016 22:01
ok, so now that I submitted that project I begin working on the one you showed us earlier afterward I would apply for the front end cert at which point they'll take a couple days and come back and either say granted or say work on x y and z and then come back
Robert Maylie
@rmaylie9560
May 17 2016 22:02
@Lilyheart yea I guess that was a silly question
well it was nice meeting everyone. I have to get going.
Jonathan Herman
@lantech19446
May 17 2016 22:03
have a good night Rob
Lily Romano
@Lilyheart
May 17 2016 22:03
I'm looking at the wiki article and it looks like it's changed a little. Once everything is completed and you sign off on things, it's immediate. https://www.freecodecamp.com/wiki/en/FreeCodeCamp-Front-End-Development-Certification/
If you want feedback, there is a great group on gitter.
@rmaylie9560 No question is silly! Knowing people want to learn about it means I push the topic up the list of importance!
Here is the list of all the FCC chat rooms. Code Review is great for feedback. https://github.com/FreeCodeCamp/FreeCodeCamp/wiki/Official-Free-Code-Camp-Chat-Rooms
There is also a subreddit if reddit is more your thing.
Jonathan Herman
@lantech19446

Jonathan Herman
@lantech19446
May 17 2016 22:09
didn't know about that one, may have to check it out. I actually thought about starting a business building the servers for people
David Castner
@davidjcastner
May 17 2016 22:11
@lantech19446 ohh that would be fun, let me know if you want to work on that
Jonathan Herman
@lantech19446
May 17 2016 22:13
unfortunately the company who was providing the software is no more they were completely FOSS but asked for a 15 dollar donation each time you downloaded it. I don't believe the source code is out there anymore and I've never found anything else that was free
David Castner
@davidjcastner
May 17 2016 22:14
I was vegetating over the weekend and playing the agrarian skies 2 modpack, quite fun, check it out if you get a chance
Lily Romano
@Lilyheart
May 17 2016 22:14
I’ve been meaning to check that out. Can you make that multiplayer?
David Castner
@davidjcastner
May 17 2016 22:15
Yes I believe so, hit me up if you want to start a server
Lily Romano
@Lilyheart
May 17 2016 22:16
Will do! I just might. I run another server when my friend Adam has spare time to play (It’s the mod “across the time”) but he never has time. So, that would be awesome.
David Castner
@davidjcastner
May 17 2016 22:18
Yes you shared that me, it was very cool looking!
How is everyone making out with the freecodecamp lessons?
Any questions so far?
Lily Romano
@Lilyheart
May 17 2016 22:23
I am doing freecodecamp and udemy course sidebyside. I just made a fun game during the udemy course but I need to upload it somewhere before I show it xD
Jonathan Herman
@lantech19446
May 17 2016 22:24
so are you doing this professionally at this point or did you learn all of this through those 2 programs?
I am a full time student at this moment. I've done some freelance work before (like a decade ago). I mostly just do excel/spreadsheet freelance work now but I haven't done that since last summer.
David Castner
@davidjcastner
May 17 2016 22:26
is the color guesser game yours? quite fun
Jonathan Herman
@lantech19446
May 17 2016 22:27
that's what's up. hope we all get to where we can work soon
Lily Romano
@Lilyheart
May 17 2016 22:29
the color guesser game I wrote during the class. My code is similar to the course one, but different in places. He would introduce what we were going to do next, and then I would pause it and just do it. Sometimes his way would be better and I would change it, sometimes not. Sometimes later he would change something to be the way I did it first. It was quite fun.
I picked up the course back when udemy had things suuuuuuper cheap. https://www.udemy.com/the-web-developer-bootcamp/
I have learned I am really bad at guessing rgb colors xD
I have a few more sections to do on udemy and then I will be pushing through the rest of FCC front-end.
Lily Romano
@Lilyheart
May 17 2016 22:39
@VictorHall is currently in the lead for highest score on FCC
@lantech19446 is closing in!

Lily Romano
@Lilyheart
May 17 2016 22:40
I have a spreadsheet!
David Castner
@davidjcastner
May 17 2016 22:40
lol should of known
Lily Romano
@Lilyheart
May 17 2016 22:40
xD
You can combine knowledge of spreadsheet formulas, CSS, and regex to make a formula like =VALUE(REGEXREPLACE(IMPORTXML("https://www.freecodecamp.com/davidjcastner","//h1[@class='flat-top text-primary']"),"(\[|\])", ""))
Lily Romano
@Lilyheart
May 17 2016 22:45
that color game was written without any jquery. so glad jquery is the next section.
runnin' out to grab some food real quick, but i'm taking gitter with me!

May 17 2016 23:08

Lily Romano
@Lilyheart
May 17 2016 23:10
It is open source. Figure out a persistence of text way and do a pr. They store it somehow as it is accessible on your profile page.
David Castner

huh?
Lily Romano
@Lilyheart
May 17 2016 23:18

@davidjcastner
May 17 2016 23:34
Hi!
That is the presentation we went over earlier! The first slide has a link to the welcome deck that I'll send to new people as they join up.

@mluteman
May 17 2016 23:37
Sorry I'm a little late to the party! My name is Mercedes and I have earned my bachelor's degree computer science with a major in database programming in 2015. I am currently applying to go back for my graduate degree in web development. I have been coding in various different coding languages for a few years, but have not been coding much until recently so I am trying to refresh my memory. I also love cats and video games.
Lily Romano
@Lilyheart
May 17 2016 23:37
Awesome!
How did you find out about MontCode?
mluteman
@mluteman
May 17 2016 23:42
I found it through the first section of FCC and I wanted to find people in my area that had the same interests in coding as I do. I also wanted to find a friendly community to help answer questions or share helpful tips and MontCode seems to be just that
Lily Romano
@Lilyheart
May 17 2016 23:44
Yay! If there is anything specific you would like to see etc etc just let me know! This was our first virtual meeting.
@davidjcastner the presentation was done with reveal.js with a custom theme I put together. reveal might come in handy for other things!
slides.com is an online editor for reveal.js but I just did it local.

@mluteman
May 17 2016 23:48
Great! I am currently starting the first project for the tribute page, and no lie I am drawing a small blank on what to do. I started it, but I am having trouble integrating what I learned of bootstrap since I have mostly worked with just html/css
Lily Romano
@Lilyheart
May 17 2016 23:49
@mluteman I think you found us on literally the same day it was posted. A few days earlier and we never would have connected :fearful:

@mluteman The community college here has a GREAT facebook group that shares awesome information. Don't need to be a student to join. Figured I'd share as you were looking for friendly techie communities. @kmartinphd has put in an amazing effort in making it a great community. https://www.facebook.com/groups/380843528763147/
