How is everyone’s coding going?

I've done pretty much didley since last Tuesday, just had so much going on

Doing well! Gonna finish my tribute page tonight
Lily Romano
@Lilyheart
May 24 2016 21:12
@lantech19446 I haven’t done much coding this week either. @davidjcastner Awesome. Maybe I’ll actually start mine tonight :p
Jonathan Herman

The chats are a good way to keep me in line with doing something each week and my intention was to begin moving through more of the js stuff earlier today but walked into a broken computer
Lily Romano
@Lilyheart
May 24 2016 21:15
That's one reason I wanted to do the chats! This whole thing started because a few people wanted to do FCC with me over the summer. It just snowballed from there!
Jonathan Herman
@lantech19446
May 24 2016 21:17
apparently you touched on something needed in the community
Lily Romano
@Lilyheart
May 24 2016 21:17
Agreed!
Jonathan Herman
@lantech19446
May 24 2016 21:19
you managed to do exactly what I envision happening to me, come up with a great idea have lots of interest and no way to monetize it

May 24 2016 21:19
I've been having a problem miniputating my backgrounds display. I've been trying to have a fixed background and have div scroll down while the body stays fixed.
Do you know the effect I'm talking about ?
Lily Romano
@Lilyheart
May 24 2016 21:20
I might fundraise for the group down the line (I'm over $100 in already), but more like fund-raise for a nonprofit.
Robert Maylie
@rmaylie9560
May 24 2016 21:20
wow, for domains?
Lily Romano
@Lilyheart
May 24 2016 21:20
Various bits and bobs that add up.
David Castner
@davidjcastner
May 24 2016 21:22
@rmaylie9560 I can take a look at your code if you want
Jonathan Herman
@lantech19446
May 24 2016 21:22
meetup allows you to collect a few dollars per person for hosting the meetup, even if you did like 3 dollars a person you could probably make that 100 back and maybe have enough to have snacky type stuff at the meetings without going out of pocket on that too
Lily Romano
@Lilyheart
May 24 2016 21:22
Share the code Rob! We can team effort it.
@lantech19446 that has a whole 'nother layer of complication right now no one probably wants to hear about. Long story short... Our space in the library is being given to us free because I don't charge for meetings.
And meetup (slash wepay) takes a cut... more than I'd rather.
Jonathan Herman
@lantech19446
May 24 2016 21:24
lol lily it's a whole level of complication I'm all too familiar with working in a library.
Lily Romano
@Lilyheart
May 24 2016 21:24
I'd rather just do a good old fashioned fundraiser.
yar!
Ugh, it's $35 a meeting just to serve food... No thanks.
But it's free space for the summer. Deal with past a little bit later.
Robert Maylie
@rmaylie9560
May 24 2016 21:26
I tend to resort back to old code (that works) after a failed edit. I can post a little later. Would you mind taking a look @davidjcastner
Lily Romano
@Lilyheart
May 24 2016 21:26
@rmaylie9560 I didn't even include the expense of the domain I didn't end up using :p
Jonathan Herman
@lantech19446
May 24 2016 21:26
yea, we're 50 but we don't charge non-profits unless they're selling stuff.
Lily Romano
@Lilyheart
May 24 2016 21:26
That 35 isn't the room fee. That's the food fee. I don't remember the room fee because it didn't apply.
David Castner
@davidjcastner
May 24 2016 21:27
@rmaylie9560 yes just post the code when you are ready
Jonathan Herman
@lantech19446
May 24 2016 21:28
they charge you a food fee? that's the most ridiculous thing I've heard in a long time.
Lily Romano
@Lilyheart
May 24 2016 21:28
Found out an interesting tidbit of information. our montcode domain almost wasn't available. MCCC's Software Developer Academy almost took that domain!
It makes sense if they keep having people who don't know how to clean up after themselves.
Looked it up. If a non-profit charges a fee, the room is $25, for profit is $50. If refreshments will be served, a non-refundable fee of $35.00 per function is charged
Jonathan Herman
@lantech19446
May 24 2016 21:31
that's just a fact of having a library, and generally is what the room fee covers. I've worked for MCLINC in the past and I can list at least 6 member libraries with far less resources where that would be a terminable offense for the director to even think of it.
Robert Maylie
@rmaylie9560
May 24 2016 21:31
Thanks Dave

@Lilyheart
May 24 2016 21:33
Hmmm... tribute page or skip to exercises.....
Actually.. I want a button on the chat.montcode.com page that hides the video... for meetings like this...
Sounds more fun to do :grinning:
Jonathan Herman
@lantech19446
May 24 2016 21:37
I'd be interested in seeing how that works, not sure I'd understand it yet but would be interesting to see
Lily Romano
@Lilyheart
May 24 2016 21:37
I'll probably use jQuery's slide up http://api.jquery.com/slideup/
I have a page somewhere with lots of jquery slides and fades. lemme find the link.
Jonathan Herman
@lantech19446
May 24 2016 21:39
so once you do slidup could you then change the button and do .slidedown to bring the chat visible again?
Lily Romano
@Lilyheart
May 24 2016 21:39
Has no backend, so nothing is persistent but feel free to poke around the code.
It would be like the + symbol on that todo page thing. here is the js file https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/1413496/Misc/projects/todo/assets/js/todos.js
it's probably slideToggle that I'll actually use, but yeah

I did using a code along found in Colt Steele's bootcamp on Udemy.

@Lilyheart Love the new David setting! muhahaha
Michael Karpinski
@karpimpski
May 24 2016 21:45
@Lilyheart I like it! how did you generate the other colors? did you make them completely random or did you base them off of the correct color?
Lily Romano
@Lilyheart
May 24 2016 21:45
You would! An Adam number of square and a David level of range is just an evil game.
@karpimpski There is a range selecter you can choose. Full is a totally random generated colors. The "David" level randomly generates nearby colors. That was fun to figure out. If you really wanna dig into the code, here is the js https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/1413496/Misc/projects/color-game/colorgame.js
search for "function closeRandomColor"
Michael Karpinski
@karpimpski
May 24 2016 21:47
@Lilyheart thanks!
Lily Romano
@Lilyheart
May 24 2016 21:47
meh, I can just put it in here! I'm too tired lately.
function closeRandomColor(str) {
    var rgb = str.match(/\d+/g);
    for (var i = 0; i < rgb.length; i++) {
        rgb[i] = Number(rgb[i]);
        var variance = Math.floor(Math.random() * 60) * (Math.random() < 0.5 ? -1 : 1);
        console.log(rgb[i] + "+" + variance);

        if(rgb[i] + variance > 255 || rgb[i] + variance < 0) {
            rgb[i] = rgb[i] - variance;
        } else {
            rgb[i] = rgb[i] + variance;
        }
    }
    return "rgb(" + rgb[0] + ", " + rgb[1] + ", " + rgb[2] + ")";
}
Michael Karpinski
@karpimpski
May 24 2016 21:47
hey guys, can you let me know what you think of my button hover and click effects? I think they're pretty good!
Lily Romano
@Lilyheart
May 24 2016 21:48
I send the closeRandomColor function the string of the last color determined and it finds numbers close to it.
Nice toggle! The font color is a bit hard to see on :hover tho
Michael Karpinski
@karpimpski
May 24 2016 21:49
@Lilyheart yeah, I noticed that. other than that, do you like the use of gradients or do you think it's too distracting? I think it looks nice
David Castner
@davidjcastner
May 24 2016 21:50
@karpimpski Nice job! Yea I would change the font color though. A minimal gradient is always a great way to spice up the looks, so I might go with a slightly less noticeable gradient
Lily Romano
@Lilyheart
May 24 2016 21:50
I think it's nice, but if you think it "might" be too distracting, then someone out there will definitely think that! Which leaves you a choice. You can leave it alone because you truly want to stick to your vision, or (what I would do) is use the gradient, but maybe make it a little less obvious. Closer colors.
Or what David said because he used better words :p I can't word today.
Michael Karpinski
@karpimpski
May 24 2016 21:51
@davidjcastner yeah, this is just a little test thing to try to figure out. I'm not using different colors @Lilyheart, just a different darkness, but I get what you guys are saying and I agree. thanks!

@rmaylie9560

@Lilyheart

May 24 2016 21:52
can you guys refresh and see if you like it better this way?
Lily Romano
@Lilyheart
May 24 2016 21:52
Sometimes you gotta stick to your design vision and sometimes you gotta compromise :smirk:
Use a lighter font color (white or almost white) is my only advice.
Michael Karpinski
@karpimpski
May 24 2016 21:53
@Lilyheart sounds good. again, this is just a test for the button but I'll mess around with the colors now and see if I can make it look nicer. thanks!

Almost ready to push the code to show/hide the video (assuming you are viewing the chat from chat.montcode.com.
Done and pushed to production.
@lantech19446 here is the main bit of code for it. I didn't end up using the toggle as I wanted to change the icon as well. Had to separate the code anyway.
    $("#videoToggleIcon").on("click", ".fa-toggle-on", function(event){
        $("#streamFrame").slideUp(600, function(){
            $("#videoToggleIcon").html("<i class='fa fa-toggle-off' aria-hidden='true'></i>");
        });
    });
    $("#videoToggleIcon").on("click", ".fa-toggle-off", function(event){
        $("#streamFrame").slideDown(600, function(){
            $("#videoToggleIcon").html("<i class='fa fa-toggle-on' aria-hidden='true'></i>");
        });
    });

Ugh yes. I finally figured out why I don't like it. It doesn't actually address ANY of the actual reasons girls are told they can't code. It reeks of straw man.

May 24 2016 23:21
My wife just shared it with me I hadn't actually seen it but I feel like women are told this about most things they would try to do and then all of a sudden ars technica decided they didn't have a story last year so lets run this but they never really offered much of a solution either.

we tried to make an indoor drone air traffic control system, but instead of wifi or bluetooth pinging we tried to use visual signs / landmarks

info*
Jonathan Herman
@lantech19446
May 24 2016 23:54
so conceivably with your development someone could put a landing zone constructed of the visual coding like your sign and when they pop on the landing sequence it would look for the LZ and automatically touch down
Alex H.
@Alexander-Huh
May 24 2016 23:55
ya, thats pretty much exactly what we wanted to accomplish
we got the drone to fly by itself, and we got the visual recognition to work, but we were unable to get the two to work together
