Lily Romano
@Lilyheart
Jun 06 2016 03:06
tribute page :pensive: is next I think.
As long as you hit all the user stories, you can use whatever styling you want.
@rmaylie9560 I may have to change your job title. From mascot, to cheerleader.
Jonathan Herman
@lantech19446
Jun 06 2016 03:09
You'll do great on the tribute, i may restart my portfolio im just having a lot of trouble making it look polished and honestly it's driving me nuts not looking at the code
Lily Romano
@Lilyheart
Jun 06 2016 03:09
“Just one more line of code, then I’ll turn the light out and go to sleep” I keep saying. Ugh.

@nhance
Jun 06 2016 14:34
Very cool!
Jonathan Herman
@lantech19446
Jun 06 2016 14:34
yea, my wife shared it with me, it's like a badass version of Hindu avengers it has Hanuman, Durga, and Vishnu in it.
Nicholas Hance
@nhance
Jun 06 2016 14:35
Oh man, I have no clue who any of those are
I'm working on some marketing and a landing page for my business
trying out some new things
Jonathan Herman
@lantech19446
Jun 06 2016 14:37
That's the thing there are Hindus in America who don't know who 2/3 of them are. Vishnu is the supreme god most of the gods you would have heard about are avatars of Vishnu like Ganesha the elephant headed god. The other 2 are pretty much unknown in this country Durga is a warrior goddess and Hanuman is a monkey-like god
nice
Nicholas Hance
@nhance
Jun 06 2016 14:38
Ah yes! My brother went to India some years back and I remember him telling me how these symbols of religious icons are everywhere
that sounds very cool, interesting to see pixar getting into that space
Jonathan Herman
@lantech19446
Jun 06 2016 14:39
yea the guy who made it apparently made it as a reference to his childhood
Lily Romano
@Lilyheart
Jun 06 2016 14:39

Nicholas Hance
@nhance
Jun 06 2016 14:39

it's still very early, but should be a big hit
Trying to find the right wording is difficult
Jonathan Herman
@lantech19446
Jun 06 2016 14:44
That's pretty cool
Lily Romano
@Lilyheart
Jun 06 2016 14:45
wording is always such a challenge. I have a lot of MontCode stuff I want to rewrite and it's an uphill battle.
Jonathan Herman
@lantech19446
Jun 06 2016 14:47
My biggest problem is always punctuation, I'm a regular ee cummings
So @nhance do you prefer NIck or Nicholas? For some reason I keep pronouncing it in my head like you were French
Nicholas Hance
@nhance
Jun 06 2016 14:51
Call me Nick
I saw you guys on the local meetup stuff, so I figured I would drop in
you have a chatroom and I'm sort of a sucker for them
Jonathan Herman
@lantech19446
Jun 06 2016 14:53

Nicholas Hance
@nhance

Nicholas Hance
@nhance
Jun 06 2016 14:56
haha yes
Jonathan Herman
@lantech19446
Jun 06 2016 14:57
That was part of what got me into computers, in the early 90's I would walk down to my dad's office on Sunday mornings and get on the chatrooms and talk to people from all over the world. The first person I ever spoke too was this girl from Istanbul who I still talk to today.
Nicholas Hance
@nhance
Jun 06 2016 14:57
That's cool
Lily Romano
@Lilyheart
Jun 06 2016 14:58
I met someone online in the mid 90's and that is how I ended up in Pennsylvania! The relationship didn't last, but I enjoy the area.

@davidjcastner
Jun 06 2016 16:36
@nhance is that the agile aaS yours? if so do you mind me asking what testing and CI tool you use? I've been trying different ones and so far travis CI seems to be the best fit.
@nhance also do you plan on extending to Node.js apps?
Robert Maylie
@rmaylie9560
Jun 06 2016 17:10
Good afternoon all you crazy coders!

Robert Maylie
@rmaylie9560
Jun 06 2016 17:17
Nice! Are you going to use this as your actual portfolio?
If so, I may have a suggestion or two.
if not, no biggy.
Jonathan Herman
@lantech19446
Jun 06 2016 17:19
I'm not sure if I'm going to use this or go to wordpress, I'd like to hear them either way
Robert Maylie
@rmaylie9560
Jun 06 2016 17:21
id reword your intro to focus on key words that would stand out to your employer.
short, sweet, and direct
Jonathan Herman
@lantech19446
Jun 06 2016 17:23
honestly I'm clueless as to what that would even be at this point
Robert Maylie
@rmaylie9560
Jun 06 2016 17:26
Ok let's play a game...
Jonathan Herman
@lantech19446
Jun 06 2016 17:26
ok
Robert Maylie
@rmaylie9560
Jun 06 2016 17:27
look at this site for 5 seconds then close it. Don't cheat!
ready?
Jonathan Herman
@lantech19446
Jun 06 2016 17:27

Ok close it
Jonathan Herman
@lantech19446

Robert Maylie
@rmaylie9560
Jun 06 2016 17:28

Jonathan Herman
@lantech19446
Jun 06 2016 17:28
agile as a service
Robert Maylie
@rmaylie9560
Jun 06 2016 17:29
tell me three
Nicholas Hance
@nhance
Jun 06 2016 17:29
hey I'm here
Jonathan Herman
@lantech19446
Jun 06 2016 17:30
they design, test, and build. Using Agile
Nicholas Hance
@nhance
Jun 06 2016 17:30
@davidjcastner yes that's mine. We use rspec and capybara, right now we're only servicing Ruby on Rails apps but that will expand in the future
Robert Maylie
@rmaylie9560
Jun 06 2016 17:30
And how do you get a quote?
Jonathan Herman
@lantech19446
Jun 06 2016 17:30
no idea
Robert Maylie
@rmaylie9560
Jun 06 2016 17:30
the button.
ok now tell me this...
what did the paragraph at the bottom say?
Jonathan Herman
@lantech19446
Jun 06 2016 17:31
didn't even get to read it in 5 seconds, probably takes me more like 30-40 to really absorb a site
Nicholas Hance
@nhance
Jun 06 2016 17:31
Fun.. a startup teardown :)
Actively working on this page right now, so this conversation is interesting :)
Robert Maylie
@rmaylie9560
Jun 06 2016 17:33
exactly. And for the most part people won't take the time to read about something unless they're already invested in your idea.
haha it's an awesome design nic!
it's an evolution of this concept
Jonathan Herman
@lantech19446
Jun 06 2016 17:36
I guess part of my issue is I have no idea what my specialty will be yet etc I don't even know if I'm going to go primarily front end or backend or if I'm going to try to be a one stop shop which would help greatly to write this that way. I have a feeling I'll be doing front end because I think my math skills might limit my ability to do backend well.
Robert Maylie
@rmaylie9560
Jun 06 2016 17:44
Awesome nic! Can't wait to see every thing fine tuned. How's the process going for you? Any snags in design?
Nicholas Hance
@nhance
Jun 06 2016 17:44
Nope, design has been the easy part. Using Semantic-ui to drive it
Excited to be able to package our service up like this, it's a helpful way to assist the scaling of apps
Robert Maylie
@rmaylie9560
Jun 06 2016 17:45
theres not a whole lot of math on the back end Johnny. Just logic. It's like solving a riddle.
Jonathan Herman
@lantech19446
Jun 06 2016 17:47
hmm ok, hopefully I won't find it to difficult then. I changed up the wording a bit, hopefully better now. I don't really like the way it looks in debug mode though too cluttered
also having issues where for some reason images don't pull up everywhere
Robert Maylie
@rmaylie9560
Jun 06 2016 17:50
@nhance wow, it's going to be a hit! May it bring you loads of money in your future😂 So what's the aas process like? I always hear how important testing and scalability are but never went down that rabbit hole yet. It's on my to do list as I progress.😕
Lily Romano
@Lilyheart
Jun 06 2016 17:50
This of this as more of an exercise in making a portfolio, not actually making it. It's a rough draft of something you will polish down the line. There is one big advantage for FreeCodeCamp having you start (keyword start) the portfolio so early in the lessons. As you go along you can add new projects immediately. The alternative is in a year you start the portfolio but can't remember the best projects to highlight.
Nicholas Hance
@nhance
Jun 06 2016 17:50
Testing is something you add to an app after you've seen some traction and get sick of dealing with things breaking all of the time when you try to add new features
Lily Romano
@Lilyheart
Jun 06 2016 17:51
Don't get hung up in the details. There are many more lessons down the FCC map that will make all of this easier.
Nicholas Hance
@nhance
Jun 06 2016 17:51
it's natural for teams to skip it in the beginning, so our service helps those teams break bad habits and gives a starting point for initial tests to make sure the application receives coverage on critical pieces
we'll move the app into CI and train the team how to start practicing test-driven development
Robert Maylie
@rmaylie9560
Jun 06 2016 17:52
is it a lot different then a typical dev environment?
Nicholas Hance
@nhance
Jun 06 2016 17:53
The "As A Service" implies we're on-demand and ready to go with very little process. The "Get a Quote with Github" is hooked directly into our project management tool which will evolve to make it easy to manage your account.. you'll be able to go in and toggle our services on and off in a completely self-service manner
I don't know what you mean by typical dev envionment
I've seen so many types
Jonathan Herman
@lantech19446
Jun 06 2016 17:53
@Lilyheart idky but it's getting soo easy to become a perfectionist with this it's driving me nuts when I can't get it where I want it.
Robert Maylie
@rmaylie9560
Jun 06 2016 17:54
Well testing in Iterations.
In really off point there aren't I?
@Lilyheart I asked first. I said it wasn't a big deal, but down the road UX is a factor.
Lily Romano
@Lilyheart
Jun 06 2016 17:57
o.O I think I've lost your conversation somewhere @rmaylie9560. What did we talk about?
Robert Maylie
@rmaylie9560
Jun 06 2016 17:58
Giving John portfolio advice.
Lily Romano
@Lilyheart
Jun 06 2016 17:58
@lantech19446 Trust me, I understand on that one. We are a lot alike in that regard. I had to make a commitment to myself to simply make a page that fullfilled the "User Stories" on the assignment. When I get off track, I look at the FCC Map to remind myself that my time is better spent getting through the curriculum. It works most of the time. I still spent far to long making a show/hide toggle work and match in graphics.
What is a big deal and how much focus on what will be different for everyone. We each have a different purpose in coming to MontCode as well a timeline to follow.
I'm just speaking from my point of view where I need to get through the material by a certain date.
Jonathan Herman
@lantech19446
Jun 06 2016 18:02
so far my biggest deal is still making pages that display consistently and that's what I get hung up on with the portfolio too like the spacing between things and sizes etc all look so different even on the same screen if I switch back and forth between full page and debug those are the details I wind up obsessing over. I don't have a specific date I need to complete this buy but the sooner I get to a level where I'm hireable the better
Robert Maylie
@rmaylie9560
Jun 06 2016 18:05
@nhance very cool. Welcome to the group!!
@lantech19446 the struggle is real my friend. I obsess over EVERYTHING when it comes it problems or if things just don't look right, FCC is like a playground just learn and have fun.
Correction, I obsess over everything except chat grammar.
😂
Nicholas Hance
@nhance
Jun 06 2016 18:11
thank you :smile:
Robert Maylie
@rmaylie9560
Jun 06 2016 18:14
No worries, it was awesome meeting you.
Jonathan Herman
@lantech19446
Jun 06 2016 18:14
lol @rmaylie9560 dude it's picking ocd I didn't know I had lol
Robert Maylie
@rmaylie9560
Jun 06 2016 18:15
Hahahha it stays dormant, until you start a front end project.
Nicholas Hance
@nhance
Jun 06 2016 18:16
Great to meet you too @rmaylie9560 !
Lily Romano
@Lilyheart
Jun 06 2016 18:17
FCC just kinda grazes over topics. Might be worth looking more into responsive design if that seems to be a topic that interests you @lantech19446 There are a lot places to get information. Maybe find a good place that teaches about media queries.
Jonathan Herman
@lantech19446
Jun 06 2016 18:19
I think I'll do the rest of the javascript stuff and then start messing with that. I can't get JS to work for much of anything
Robert Maylie
@rmaylie9560
Jun 06 2016 18:20
Hey Johnny you want to pass a codePen back and forth?
Fork it!
Lily Romano
@Lilyheart
Jun 06 2016 18:21
@rmaylie9560 hey! that's my game!
@lantech19446 If you find FCC's js lacking (many do) try khan academy or code academy.
Robert Maylie
@rmaylie9560
Jun 06 2016 18:22
Lol, that's hack philly's game. It's up for grabs😂
How's code academy's Java script lil?
Lily Romano
@Lilyheart
Jun 06 2016 18:25
it's okay. Better than FCC but sometimes the feedback is lackng.
David Castner
@davidjcastner
Jun 06 2016 18:26
@nhance Yea it looks like an awesome service, I learned about implementing testing the hard way
Nicholas Hance
@nhance
Jun 06 2016 18:26
Most teams do
Robert Maylie
@rmaylie9560
Jun 06 2016 18:27
Hmm, I like FCC because it's digestible, but I know I'm going to crave more
Nicholas Hance
@nhance
Jun 06 2016 18:27
We've designed this as a shortcut to good tests once that pain is realized
Robert Maylie
@rmaylie9560
Jun 06 2016 18:27
Kinda like Chinese food...
David Castner
@davidjcastner
Jun 06 2016 18:27
I like the part about how you build the tests for people, I can see that being a very popular feature
If you had testing for node apps, I might ask to be a customer
Lily Romano

@rmaylie9560 FCC skips some points of information that would be helpful to people doing it for the first time. More of the conceptual stuff.

@davidjcastner what other questions do you have? These are helping me build the homepage
Yes, we will be hiring to help when we expand into new language areas
We're focused on rails right now and javascript is the next place we're moving

Nicholas Hance
@nhance
Jun 06 2016 18:33
likely node, angular, react
It's hard to say for sure, it depends on how sales perform once the launch goes off
Launch should happen this week

But the thing that caught my attention was building tests for people, which is a huge (I mean HUGE) benefit to development

It's designed to be the kickstart of a mindshift.. we build the initial tests with the intention that the development teams maintain them

@Lilyheart I think you had told me before that I could set up a repo on github to host my images, just got that setup and it seems to be working. Thank you.

out of curiosity does codepen have a js console or do I need to go into debug and then run it through chromes?
David Castner
@davidjcastner
Jun 06 2016 19:48
@lantech19446 it does have a console but it runs differently, I would advise continuing with your method of using debug mode and chrome's debugger. That's what I have been doing since chrome's debugger is excellent, but I may not be using codepen properly, perhaps @Lilyheart know if codepen's console is any good

@lantech19446 I think it was actually david's suggestion. I prefer Dropbox. As far as codepen goes, I personally exclusively use chrome's console. It's the best I've ever used over the years.
I will be even more afk soon. Popping out for a quick bit with Adam (I need to remember to bug him about joining this chat!) Last library meetup he started out without touching any of this. By the end he has FCC and GitHub going and was killin' the lessons.

thank you @davidjcastner for the github image repository suggestion then. I had no issues with dropbox for my ganesha page but for some reason when I load my portfolio on other computers the images weren't loading that seems to be resolved with github. Glad to know that chrome is so good though I'm looking at some of the videos on sitepoint and they were showing the chrome developer tools and jsbin

@lantech19446 you just placed them inside a gh-page branch of a repo and used the proper url, correct? such as username.github.io/repo-name/image-name.png
or did you create a user page repo with the repo name of username.github.io, just curious to see which method you used

Made a repo called mypictures uploaded them directly to master copy image location and call it from codepen

@lantech19446 for some reason I thought you needed a gh-page but I think that's of you have a private repo. So the way you did it simplest and the best way
