Robert Maylie
@rmaylie9560
Jun 07 2016 02:27
nice, how was it?
p.s i broke down 3 times today trying to get home.
your serpentine belt?
Jonathan Herman
@lantech19446
Jun 07 2016 02:30
So boring i fell asleep after an hour an it only took johanna 10 minutes lol. Yep serpentine the tensioner destroyed my compressor. Any idea what's wrong with yours?
Robert Maylie
@rmaylie9560
Jun 07 2016 02:30
no clue. the truck is a nightmare.
and my mechanic sucks.
does johnna code?

Jonathan Herman
@lantech19446
Jun 07 2016 02:36
I tried lol we want to have our own business someday
Robert Maylie
@rmaylie9560
Jun 07 2016 02:40
Yea, it has its perks.
I've had this crazy idea that ive always wanted to act on, but unsure due to a few reasons
it would mean i'd have to sell the house and take a chance.
but i have kids now, sooooo thats not happening
Jonathan Herman
@lantech19446
Jun 07 2016 03:01
What kind of business would you start?
Robert Maylie
@rmaylie9560
Jun 07 2016 03:05
it doesnt matter. its not creative or anything. just something ive always wanted to do.
so how ya liking skill share?

Jonathan Herman
@lantech19446
Jun 07 2016 03:14
Oo good so far
Lily Romano
@Lilyheart
Jun 07 2016 20:49
How has everyone's coding been going this week?
Jonathan Herman
@lantech19446
Jun 07 2016 20:50
I've done a little under half of the intro to JS on sitepoint the guy puts me to sleep but I'm pushing through it and I've done I think almost 20 challenges today
Lily Romano
@Lilyheart
Jun 07 2016 20:50
awesome!
Jonathan Herman
@lantech19446
Jun 07 2016 20:53
yea I'm not sure just how practically some of the intro stuff applies and I'm noticing big differences between the way that sitepoint teaches the ecma standard and some of the notation style that FCC teaches, both seem to work but I'm not sure if one is better than the other or if it's just the way things are done.
Lily Romano
@Lilyheart
Jun 07 2016 20:55
Every business is going to have their own standards about the specifics on how they want things documented.
Sadly there is no universal detailed standard. Just some basics that vary by language.
Jonathan Herman
@lantech19446
Jun 07 2016 20:57
hmm ok it's interesting enough that you can use bracket notation to eliminate the need for something longer like console.log(example.toIndex(3)); but I'm not sure why the longer version became the standard lol
Lily Romano
@Lilyheart
Jun 07 2016 20:57
What do you mean by bracket notation in that example?
Jonathan Herman
@lantech19446
Jun 07 2016 20:59
fcc has you finding index positions using what they call bracket notation so instead of .toIndex(2) it's var thirdLetterOfLastName = lastName[2];
Lily Romano
@Lilyheart
Jun 07 2016 21:01
haven't seen toIndex before.
Jonathan Herman
@lantech19446
Jun 07 2016 21:01
I may have to go back it may be indexOf
Lily Romano
@Lilyheart
Jun 07 2016 21:01
That one I know!
Jonathan Herman
@lantech19446
Jun 07 2016 21:02
there was a way to get it to spit out the letter at a predetermined index point
Danielle Butler
@dbutler22
Jun 07 2016 21:03
Hello.
Lily Romano
@Lilyheart
Jun 07 2016 21:03
bracket notation takes the index and gives you the letter. indexOf takes the letter and gives you the index.
Jonathan Herman
@lantech19446
Jun 07 2016 21:03
wow way off that was .charAt lol
yea I was just way off it would be the equivalent of console.log(lastName.charAt(2));
hey @dbutler22
Lily Romano
@Lilyheart
Jun 07 2016 21:05
bracket notation is not fully supported.
Welcome @dbutler22
Danielle Butler
@dbutler22
Jun 07 2016 21:06
Hi, @lantech19446
Jonathan Herman
@lantech19446
Jun 07 2016 21:06
ok so i'm better off using .charAt when FCC isn't exclusively asking me for bracket
Danielle Butler
@dbutler22
Jun 07 2016 21:06
Hi, @Lilyheart
Lily Romano
@Lilyheart
Jun 07 2016 21:06
correct! You probably could even still use charAt regardless as they are usually checking results, not the how.
Jonathan Herman
@lantech19446
Jun 07 2016 21:06
finally someone close by lol @dbutler22 I work in Lansdale and live in Hatfield, nice to have someone in the area
interesting, I may go back and try it
Danielle Butler
@dbutler22
Jun 07 2016 21:07
Nice to know, @lantech19446 . LOL.
Jonathan Herman
@lantech19446
Jun 07 2016 21:08
@Lilyheart nope they're looking specifically for bracket :(
Lily Romano
@Lilyheart
Jun 07 2016 21:09
Silly
If it was super early maybe they didn't want to get into methods yet? Try to keep it simple to ease into things.
Jonathan Herman
@lantech19446
Jun 07 2016 21:11
I'm probably about a third of the way though basic javascript but I would think it's much more difficult to break people of that habit once they instill it
Danielle Butler
@dbutler22
Jun 07 2016 21:13
I'm working in jQuery. It's going pretty well.
Lily Romano
@Lilyheart
Jun 07 2016 21:14
jQuery makes life so much easier.
Jonathan Herman
@lantech19446
Jun 07 2016 21:14
what's your background danielle?
Danielle Butler
@dbutler22
Jun 07 2016 21:17
I'm earning my Website Design certificate at Montco to use with my Bachelors in Communications. I've been learning Java for two semesters and have one semester of HTML5 & CSS under my belt. I learned a little C for a school group project. Before that, I learned FORTRAN and Basic but had no reason to use it.
Jonathan Herman
@lantech19446
Jun 07 2016 21:18
I guess the part of this that makes the least sense to me is obviously there has to be some real world practicality to wanting ot know what the 3 position of a response is but I can't think of any and I'm not sure going though github to find examples will help lol
Danielle Butler
@dbutler22
Jun 07 2016 21:19
Yeah, it's hard seeing how most of this will apply. LOL.
Michael Irwin
@dcpking_twitter
Jun 07 2016 21:19
<eek> is that me ? :) Just learning and helping and seeing what's going on in web coding these days.
Jonathan Herman
@lantech19446
Jun 07 2016 21:19
that's cool danielle, I failed Java when I took it all the more power to you if you can do well with it. I loved Basic when I was younger but didn't realize it was even being used anymore
Lily Romano
@Lilyheart
Jun 07 2016 21:19
Things make a lot more sense as you start working through the algorithm challenges.
Michael Irwin
@dcpking_twitter
Jun 07 2016 21:19
Too right, Lily!

I'm actually living in the 19440 but I'm the network admin for the lansdale library so it wouldn't surprise me if we've crossed paths before
Michael Irwin
@dcpking_twitter
Jun 07 2016 21:21

Always something new to learn!
We have people of all sorts of levels.
Michael Irwin
@dcpking_twitter

Jonathan Herman
@lantech19446
Jun 07 2016 21:26
it's cool, I lived in Flourtown most of my life so that was my home library but I've worked in Lansdale for 8yrs and up until December when I moved up here with my wife I barely knew anything past like main and susquehanna lol
Michael Irwin
@dcpking_twitter
Jun 07 2016 21:29
Ha LOL !!! Anyhow, Lily will be jumping on us if we don't do some coding, I suppose.
function Hello(who){alert("Hi, " + who);}

Jun 07 2016 21:31
Will do! When do you work until?
Lily Romano
@Lilyheart
Jun 07 2016 21:31
We are slowly expanding the calendar out. Maybe something will come up that works! (or you decide to host a coffee & code somewhere....)
Jonathan Herman
@lantech19446
Jun 07 2016 21:32
tonight I'm in til 9, that's most nights mon and thurs I'm out at 4. @Lilyheart I may try eventually but for a lot of people it's out of the way

Lily Romano
@Lilyheart
Jun 07 2016 21:33
Heh. Silly! Mostly the chat on Tuesday's is people chatting and answering questions as they come up. Many of the members are using http://www.freecodecamp.com as the primary method of learning with whatever other resources help.
Jonathan Herman
@lantech19446
Jun 07 2016 21:34
lol you know I almost forgot the chat again it didn't even dawn on me that today is Tuesday I just happened to be at my screen when you said hi lol
Lily Romano
@Lilyheart
Jun 07 2016 21:34
And there are a core group of us that are in the chat daily :grinning:
Michael Irwin
@dcpking_twitter
Jun 07 2016 21:35
Like "all day" ? :) I can imagine!
Jonathan Herman
@lantech19446
Jun 07 2016 21:35
it's pretty rare for me to not be here
Michael Irwin
@dcpking_twitter
Jun 07 2016 21:36
Once I'm in FreeCodeCamp do I look for MontCode as a group?
Lily Romano
@Lilyheart
Jun 07 2016 21:36
the freecodecamp site is web development lessons.
There is information in there about local groups (called Campsites) and we are listed, but their official means is through Facebook.
If you are on Facebook, www.montcode.com will send you there.
Michael Irwin
@dcpking_twitter
Jun 07 2016 21:38
Ah. I have something to confess then. Yes I need to learn a lot of stuff like jQuery and modern javascript, but I started programming web sites by hand back in 1996, when NotePad was the state of the art in editors :) I stopped around when CSS arrived, so things like that are what I need to learn :)
Lily Romano
@Lilyheart
Jun 07 2016 21:39
sounds like FCC is a perfect place to start.
Jonathan Herman
@lantech19446
Jun 07 2016 21:39
looking at your resume @dcpking_twitter you and @nhance will get along very well unless I'm confusing people he has like 15yrs of microsoft stack experience
Lily Romano
@Lilyheart
Jun 07 2016 21:40
And it sounds like you are in a similar place to me and Jon! I finally broke away from Notepad within the last year.
Jonathan Herman
@lantech19446
Jun 07 2016 21:40
ya know that was another question I was going to ask here, what ever happened to xhtml?
Lily Romano
@Lilyheart
Jun 07 2016 21:40
He has the ruby experience. @csharpfritz_twitter is MS .
Michael Irwin
@dcpking_twitter
Jun 07 2016 21:40
Ha Ha! LOL .... UltraEdit is my fave editor. I'm in the group
(FB that is)
Lily Romano
@Lilyheart
Jun 07 2016 21:41
Group Approved!
I use Atom now.
Danielle Butler
@dbutler22
Jun 07 2016 21:41
@Lilyheart , are there more free sites to learn coding besides freecodecamp and code academy? Just curious.
Michael Irwin
@dcpking_twitter
Jun 07 2016 21:42
What does Atom run on? I use Chromebooks on the move and a Linux monster at home
Lily Romano
@Lilyheart
Jun 07 2016 21:42
@dbutler22 many! Here are some http://welcome.montcode.com/#/5

Jonathan Herman
@lantech19446
Jun 07 2016 21:43
woohoo another linux person too lol
Lily Romano
@Lilyheart
Jun 07 2016 21:43
@davidjcastner is a big Atom fanatic as well and he works in Linux. https://atom.io/
Jonathan Herman
@lantech19446
Jun 07 2016 21:44
This is like the first group of devs I've ever been amongst that didn't have like a complete and utter hardon for mac
Michael Irwin
@dcpking_twitter
Jun 07 2016 21:44
Cool. I work with MS SQL Server all day, and am waiting for a copy of their Linux version to drop down the wire for me to try out
Lily Romano
@Lilyheart
Jun 07 2016 21:44
Don't get me wrong @lantech19446 I got my first mac about a month ago (after being diehard anti-mac for decades) and I am over the moon with it. But I believe every tool as a use.
Jonathan Herman
@lantech19446
Jun 07 2016 21:45
I had mac years ago believe it or not I fell out of love with it the more I used it the less purpose I saw in it.
I'll be back shortly though I have a computer I need to get back on the line
Michael Irwin
@dcpking_twitter
Jun 07 2016 21:46
mac? BSD is ok, but the UI they've pasted on top of it is too non-standard to be usable. I used them in Comcast for almost a year, and ended up doing a lot of my work at the command prompt. Friendlier!
Lily Romano
@Lilyheart
Jun 07 2016 21:46
xhtml info i found @lantech19446
Michael Irwin
@dcpking_twitter
Jun 07 2016 21:48
XHTML ? Ha! That was never going to fly just because of the errors stopping rendering - that meant if you made a mistake you couldn't see it. Not good for developers!
Lily Romano
@Lilyheart
Jun 07 2016 21:48
Amen. I get that a strict requirement supports better coding practices... but ugh.
Michael Irwin
@dcpking_twitter
Jun 07 2016 21:51
Still, what do "we" do between Tuesdays? As a group?
Lily Romano
@Lilyheart
Jun 07 2016 21:51
Every other Wednesday we meet in Eagleville, same time.
So far @davidjcastner has been averaging a presentation on a topic about once a month at MCCC which we've started streaming for non-students.
Michael Irwin
@dcpking_twitter
Jun 07 2016 21:53
ok. So what kind of subjects do you get (want) to see presentations on?
And, once one is logged in to FCC, what then?
Lily Romano
@Lilyheart
Jun 07 2016 21:54
If you are on chat.montcode.com there is a video over there <--- from our very first online chat. A bulk of that presentation can be found at http://welcome.montcode.com
Michael Irwin
@dcpking_twitter
Jun 07 2016 21:55
ok. Looking at three things at once here - sorry!
Lily Romano
@Lilyheart
Jun 07 2016 21:55
If you don't feel like listening to me talk (I know I wouldn't!) you can just jump into FCC challenges in where ever interests you.
As far as presentations, David and I both have lists of topics that have been asked for. If there is something you want to specfically discuss, you can start a private discussion here on gitter, or facebook or email montcode@gmail.com
Michael Irwin
@dcpking_twitter
Jun 07 2016 21:55
And yes, of course I'd like to listen to you talk!
Lily Romano
@Lilyheart
Jun 07 2016 21:58
If days were years, MontCode would be able to officially drink today!
Jonathan Herman
@lantech19446
Jun 07 2016 21:58
Lol
Lily thats the last time i tried to build a webpage w3c was offering a free school on xhtml css and something else wasnt js but i forget what it was
Michael Irwin
@dcpking_twitter
Jun 07 2016 21:59
LOL <hic> ... Jonathan saw, I think, a bit of my history on LinkedIn. I actually started coding way back in my last two years in High school, when we were taught FORTRAN, and given coding sheets to write programs on!
(Sorry! I'll clear up the spiders, I promise!)
Lily Romano
@Lilyheart
Jun 07 2016 22:01
Ha. Mine was probably learning BASIC that I had on my 8088. So, a few years later, but not as many as you might think.
Michael Irwin
@dcpking_twitter
Jun 07 2016 22:02
1972! Not that many, as you say!
What do people ask to be told about? All flashy things on the web - right?
Lily Romano
@Lilyheart
Jun 07 2016 22:03
Intro to HTML and CSS was the last presentation.
Node.js is coming up on the 23rd.
On the docket off the top of my head is python, arduino and Microsoft Visual Studio.
Michael Irwin
@dcpking_twitter
Jun 07 2016 22:05
Neat. If anyone wants to learn SQL of any sort, I'm up for that. Python I'm learning myself
Danielle Butler
@dbutler22
Jun 07 2016 22:05
Sounds good, and we can stream these on YT?
Lily Romano
@Lilyheart
Jun 07 2016 22:05
I know the list is bigger than that. I'll add you to it. Shoot me an email at montcode@gmail.com if you get a moment.
Michael Irwin
@dcpking_twitter
Jun 07 2016 22:06
VS is just a tool, really, and I've found that I just google to see if it'll do what I want.
Lily Romano
@Lilyheart
Jun 07 2016 22:06
@dbutler22 yup! The HTML and CSS one was streamed.
We are editing the video into two videos to be published on the youtube channel.
Danielle Butler

Michael Irwin
@dcpking_twitter

Lily Romano
@Lilyheart
Jun 07 2016 22:12
it's the same video on chat.montocode.com as well. Intro to HTML should be up in a week or so.

Hey David. You are never late to the party! Much like wizards.
That is what /me does. I typed "/me wonders if you can see this"

Did you already explain the reason people call you that?

Lily Romano
@Lilyheart
Jun 07 2016 22:33
I hadn't used SQL in ages but I set on up for the YOURLS on montco.de (a self hosting short URL program) https://github.com/YOURLS/YOURLS/releases

I would love to see something on nosql vs sql, all of my experience is in nosql
although I'm told I've been treating Mongodb like a sql database because I use schemas

Ha! SQL is just the algebraic version of set algebra, written with a keen eye for saving space (servers smaller than my laptop)
Long time since I saw that one on SQL Injection, Lily. Was it the dad who originated the injection, can one ask ?

Still doin' Algorithm Challenges?
David Castner
@davidjcastner
Jun 07 2016 22:50
yea haven't had a chance to work on it recently until now
how about you, did you finish all algorithms including the advanced?
Lily Romano
@Lilyheart
Jun 07 2016 22:51

Lily Romano

Michael Irwin
@dcpking_twitter
Jun 07 2016 23:00
Are they all as well-defined (but picky) as the friendly date ranges?
Lily Romano
@Lilyheart
Jun 07 2016 23:00
some are pickier @_@
Did that one at like 1 a.m.
Michael Irwin
@dcpking_twitter
Jun 07 2016 23:02
But when else? No other time that the OCD rears it's head! :smiley_cat:
Lily Romano
@Lilyheart
Jun 07 2016 23:02
then didn't get to sleep until like 3 a.m. because I was annoyed at all the test ranges I had to regex for.
Michael Irwin
@dcpking_twitter
Jun 07 2016 23:05
something like this, huh? (yes, I know the regex isn't syntacticly correct, but you see what I mean? ) [1-9]2[0-9].3[0-9].4[0-9]
Lily Romano
@Lilyheart
Jun 07 2016 23:06
/^([(][0-9]{3}[)]|[0-9]{3}[-]{0,1}){1}[ ]{0,1}[0-9]{3}[- ]{0,1}[0-9]{4}$/ !!!

Can you have a US phone number starting with a zero?
Lily Romano
@Lilyheart
Jun 07 2016 23:07
I know you love regex David :heartpulse:
technically they can only start with 2-9
But I don't feel like writing regex for every NANP rule
Michael Irwin
@dcpking_twitter
Jun 07 2016 23:08
That's what I thought! Oh David: if you "like" regex you'll be happy I didn't paste the email one here: http://emailregex.com/
Lily Romano
@Lilyheart
Jun 07 2016 23:09

Michael Irwin
@dcpking_twitter
Jun 07 2016 23:10
That's why we accumulate real phone numbers in tables, @lilyheart, and just believe what people tell us (if they get it wrong they don't hear about winning :) )

Michael Irwin
@dcpking_twitter
Jun 07 2016 23:17
Hey! I've just been summoned by the brat of a child of a friend, demanding to be taken to the local WaWa for a drink of some sort. I have great sympathy for the poor woman, or I'd tell him where to get off, so I've to go. I'll maybe be back before 8. Maybe not. If not, it's been great and I'll get stuck into the FCC

yea, I get gitter on my phone too so I'll likely be here if it tells me you've messaged
Lily Romano
@Lilyheart
Jun 07 2016 23:19
As do I. Although the notifications annoy me because if I leave the laptop open with a gitter chat window open I no longer get phone notifications even if the window is not in focus.
Jonathan Herman
@lantech19446
