I I need help creating a navigation menu. I need the lists to dropdown all at once when you click either of the tabs. However the tab that you clicked need to be highlighted. It similar to the hover action on the http://www.uark.edu/ navigation menu.
I have example code in a code pen
if needed
@nhance
Lily Romano
@Lilyheart
Jun 13 2016 19:07
Share away! It's easy to fork a pen and work on the code that way.
does this work?
No it does not. one second let me create one that does
Victor
@VictorHall
Jun 13 2016 19:20
it works when you click the link

Jun 13 2016 19:20
If you are using chrome, look at the UARK page and open the inspect tool. Click on the Resources Tab. Then Frames->uark.edu->scripts and you can view all the scripts that uark is using.
At a glance, combine appears to be the one with the nav function.
Victor
@VictorHall
Jun 13 2016 19:23
Im not seeing frames inside the resources tab @Lilyheart

thats alot of js. How do i know what part of it drops down all of the lists at once and highlights the tab when it is hovered?
Lily Romano
@Lilyheart
Jun 13 2016 19:30
The li's in question have a gaSendEvent(this.href, 'top-nav', 'Admissions'); attached.
Actually, I think that code that is attached is mostly for google analytics. Been too long since I've dealt them them.
Lily Romano
@Lilyheart
Jun 13 2016 19:35
They are using bootstrap though.

@VictorHall How's the dropdown stuff going? still having issues getting the current tab to stay highlighted?
Victor
@VictorHall
Jun 13 2016 19:38
yeah. i need to use bootstrap also but i dont think bootstrap has anything to do with the menus dropping down. I dont know if its js or css or jquery ?
yes i am @davidjcastner
I know how to show the other lists when one is clicked. I can just use an on click event handler for each tab and call the tab by id if its is click in jquery. I can then add the open class to the other lists.
Lily Romano
@Lilyheart
Jun 13 2016 19:41
The hover highlights should be easy to figure out once you get the click on one, everything display to work. You sure you want it as a click and not just a hover?
Victor
@VictorHall
Jun 13 2016 19:41
I need both @Lilyheart

@davidjcastner
Jun 13 2016 19:42
Alright, it can be done with jQuery in way that makes a lot of sense. Not sure if it's possible to do it with pure css. The idea to is add a class when the dropdown is clicked or hovered over, and then remove the class when the mouse leaves or another dropdown is clicked. The class then can be used to apply styling for your "selected" look.
Victor
@VictorHall
Jun 13 2016 19:42
Yes thats exactly what I need.
@davidjcastner
I have a code pen set up but its kind of funky

Here is a complete list of jquery events, the mouse over and mouse off take handlers just like the click event https://api.jquery.com/category/events/
Why don't you have a try at implementing the mouse over event https://api.jquery.com/mouseover/ ? If your still having trouble tag me in a message. I'll check back in a little bit
Victor
@VictorHall
Jun 13 2016 19:45

I was thinking of using an $("dropdown-list1").click(function(){

});

for each other the lists
David Castner
@davidjcastner
Jun 13 2016 19:46
you can use both a click and mouseover event
or as many events and as many types of events as you need, there is no limit
Victor
@VictorHall
Jun 13 2016 19:47
okay let me code this up. Ill show you what I have when Im finished

uark hid it in the bootstrap css file and inside media queries. http://codepen.io/lilyheart/pen/wWGpVm/ for the curious. It's still messy but maybe you can pick out what you need.
@VictorHall Sorry I don't have any more time to pick out any more details.
Victor

so all it is is css?
wow lily!!! thanks soo much!

Jun 13 2016 20:40
@VictorHall bootstrap too maybe, I honestly didn't go through it with a comb. I just kept deleting parts until it didn't work again! narrowed it down to anything that mentioned #mainnav . The magic is in the media queries as without them, none of it works. the ul's and li's don't even need ANY classes.
Victor
@VictorHall
Jun 13 2016 20:49
@Lilyheart what folder did you go through ? if any
im kind of lost on how you found the css and bootstrap

  • Literally stuck the entire page source into an html file and deleted things until it broke.
  • It broke when I deleted the link to http://www.uark.edu/_resources/php/combine.php?t=css&f=bootstrap-3.min.css,uark-style.css.
  • So then I stuck THAT file into a local file and pointed my local HTML to it instead.
  • So now I have the html file with only a link to css.css in the head. I deleted everything from the html except the <nav> section (which I had to fix on the pen btw, it was a divand checked to make sure it worked.
  • At that point I looked at the nav html and saw the #mainnav . When I deleted the references to #mainnav in the css, it broke. Jackpot.
I thought it was js as well, but deleting all the script references didn't break it.
