Super awesome. It was a landscaper from norristown. His car got impounded and he got charged. No help from east norriton police.
They're a joke.

I'm finally back to watching JS videos and still see no use for half the stuff they're showing me. Is there somewhere I can look to see practical uses of JS?
Lily Romano
@Lilyheart
Jun 18 2016 17:19
like what do you not see a practical use for?
Jonathan Herman
@lantech19446
Jun 18 2016 17:23
any of it like they're teaching it command by command with arrays etc and it's great to know what push and pop and reverse and sort do but I don't see a practical use for them in an actual program. I don't understand what kind of data I would be taking into this program that reversing the order of it would be so important or why I would need to do it in an array in the first place.

Say I wanted to make a website that would let you search movies and add them to a “to watch list”. I don’t want to house the movie information myself as it’s already online so I decide to use http://omdbapi.com/
(normally I would do this in json, but json doesn’t look pretty in a browser without extentions). I let a user search for “star” and I query omdb and I get this as a reponse http://www.omdbapi.com/?s=star&y=&plot=short&r=xml
I take that response and save it in an array. I loop through the array to create the display on the webpage.
Sorting is helpful because maybe I want the user to be able to sort by year instead of title (or something else entirely).
push/pop/unshift/shift are important too as maybe I want to let the user add a custom listing for display.
you haven’t seen backend stuff yet and this is node/express but it’s still javascript. This is what the display page would look like
<ul>
    <% data["Search"].forEach(function(movie) { %>
      <li>
          <strong>
              <%= movie["Title"] %>
          </strong>
          - <%=movie["Year"]%>
      </li>
    <% }) %>
</ul>

Each bit between the <% %> is js code (ejs specifically, embedded js) and everything outside them is HTML

ok so some of this I haven't even gotten too yet maybe that's why it's not making sense yet

Even this chat is a display of lines coming from an array using gitter’s API
Gitter created an API to interact with the gitter backend. Then gitter itself actually uses that API to display the chat. It’s not just for external dev’s to access.

like I understand that part of it it's more or less how the commands are interacting with the arrays to make a useful program, like I don't even understand everything you posted yet so maybe I just need to get deeper into the lessons but part of what helps me understand is to hit the ground running and build like basic things using it and I could always do that with java, html, etc but JS seems so abstract at the moment.

I’d suggest sticking it out until at least the "Intermediate Front End Development Projects” portion as you will probably use arrays and such in that.

The udemy course is on sale today (only) $24 bucks. This is the one that I’m loving right now if you like videos (and I would be able to help and I believe @VictorHall is going through it as well) course link
I don’t think he would put you to sleep. @rmaylie9560 and @Alexander-Huh watched one of his videos at the first meetup. I find Colt Steele very entertaining.

hopefully it'll stay on sale for a week, I just don't have the money at the moment. but looking at the code for the octocats and seeing how he put the all the descriptions into a massive string array so this might actually help put this together in my head
Lily Romano

It goes on and off sale constantly. If not in a week, than prob in a few weeks.

soooo much code to make that, it's very cool and I could at least follow some of it but probably not even 50% once I was past the octofactoid variable and array
