I like the first one and the last one in that link
Lily Romano
@Lilyheart
Jun 21 2016 02:46
Thanks @reaser . of what has been come up with so far, 3 is on my top list also. 2 was just a desperate attempt to reduce the M K ‘ness of 1.
Mike
@dcpking
Jun 21 2016 02:51
I think I'd like the third one, but with the background colour of the first, if that's a possibility ...
Lily Romano
@Lilyheart
Jun 21 2016 02:53
nope Mike, you are stuck with it :p yeah, yesterday I mentioned that final version would be cleaned up. I forgot to crry that forward to today’s message. 2 and 3 were my shitty attempts using a web browser based editor :p
Mike
@dcpking
Jun 21 2016 02:54
<lol> ! But their idea - of "<M>" - is great because it's so simple. Just I thought plain white on black a bit stark
Dunno how you get time for it! I'm perpetually ambushed by crap at work!
Lily Romano
@Lilyheart
Jun 21 2016 02:55
! It’s green !!! I promise. It’s actually the same as the dark green on the other, just without the gradient.
I am a full time student. No work.
except learnin’ and boy howdy is learnin’ work.
Mike
@dcpking
Jun 21 2016 02:56
"no work" ! Ha!! That's a myth! Learning is definitely work :)
Lily Romano
@Lilyheart
Jun 21 2016 02:56
I think it’s worse then a job. I can’t escape from it!
Mike
@dcpking
Jun 21 2016 02:57
Well, you could, but .... then you'd have to get a job! Jobs are difficult things - you tend t get comfortable and not want to move until they vanish out from under you
I'm joining you on that Udemy bootcamp - it seems more like the way I learn
Lily Romano
@Lilyheart
Jun 21 2016 02:58
awesome!
I should be wrapping it up by the end of next week (she says with fingers and toes crossed)
Mike

BTW, did you ever ask anyone about learning SQL. 'Cos if people want to then I'd better get down to writing the courseware!

It’s on the list for presentations, but I no where near ready for that yet. I’m still working on the first two videos and we are presenting the third on Thursday. /panic
I need to catch up before figuring that out.
Mike
@dcpking
Jun 21 2016 03:01
ok. "first two videos" ? <eek> !
Lily Romano
@Lilyheart
Jun 21 2016 03:01
the presentations were recorded.

Mike

Jun 21 2016 03:01

Yeah - right.
Lily Romano

"A real mic"? Something more than a headset mic?
Lily Romano
@Lilyheart
Jun 21 2016 20:46
For my presentation I used the laptop mic, but I was in my house where I could control ambient sounds.
I'm not sure if it's the one David ended up getting, but this is the mic that was suggested to us by a friend who is a podcaster

Hello! Welcome!
Maggie
@maggienj
Jun 21 2016 21:03
i am working in a princeton_housing project ( the code which i am working on is in my github.com/maggienj
Lily Romano
@Lilyheart
Jun 21 2016 21:04
awesome!
Maggie
@maggienj
Jun 21 2016 21:04
i have built it using nodejs / express framework / ejs template
i have to beautify the site
that is the task i am working on
Lily Romano
@Lilyheart
Jun 21 2016 21:04
That is always the "fun" part.
Maggie
@maggienj
Jun 21 2016 21:04
i am thinking of beautifying it using bootstrap
Danielle Butler

Hello!
Maggie
@maggienj
Jun 21 2016 21:04
yeah!
Lily Romano
@Lilyheart
Jun 21 2016 21:04
I am a bootstrap fan
Hey Danielle!
Maggie
@maggienj
Jun 21 2016 21:05
wow i am in the right place then.... Lily!
Danielle Butler
@dbutler22
Jun 21 2016 21:05
I'm liking bootstrap too.
Maggie
@maggienj
Jun 21 2016 21:05
since i have already built the project using node.js / express / ejs...... i'm stuck on how to integrate bootstrap with this site.... i did download bootstrap....
the latest code is at github.com/maggienj/Megan
this is the princeton housing program ....which i am building for the princeton township muncipality... ( govt)
David Castner
@davidjcastner

@maggienj Welcome! I'm sure we'll be able to help you out
Maggie
@maggienj
Jun 21 2016 21:06
thanks a ton!
Lily Romano
@Lilyheart
Jun 21 2016 21:07
I'm an currently learning node/express/mongodb
Maggie
@maggienj
Jun 21 2016 21:08
this is my first site using node.js / express ....
it (express framework) is based on an MVC model ...
David Castner
@davidjcastner
Jun 21 2016 21:08
@maggienj nice! are you familiar with other frameworks?
Maggie
@maggienj
Jun 21 2016 21:10
i have created one site on RoR as a POC ....and that used Ruby on Rails framework
I used AWS to test drive this RoR and the barebones POC for RoR ( ruby on rails ) can be viewed at http://ec2-54-165-52-132.compute-1.amazonaws.com/
not any other frameworks... i guess..
Lily Romano
@Lilyheart
Jun 21 2016 21:10
you can DRY up the code somewhat using partials. This page goes into it somewhat https://scotch.io/tutorials/use-ejs-to-template-your-node-application
Maggie
@maggienj
Jun 21 2016 21:11
i am using ejs template in that Megan ( princeton housing) site.
Lily Romano
@Lilyheart
Jun 21 2016 21:11
stick bootstrap in the header and style with bootstrap as normal. Nothin' special.
Maggie
@maggienj
Jun 21 2016 21:12
but the challenge comes in when you have to integrate ejs template with bootstrap template for the "beautification" part
hmm
ok..
Jonathan Herman
@lantech19446
Jun 21 2016 21:13
oh man I am totally not in the right mindset tonight, reading what @maggienj wrote as created one site as released on recognizance and going wtf?
Lily Romano
@Lilyheart
Jun 21 2016 21:14
I wanna release a website on recognizance. I'm not sure what that means, but it sounds fun.
Maggie
@maggienj
Jun 21 2016 21:14
it sounds greek and latin to me now..
@lantech19446
Lily Romano
@Lilyheart
Jun 21 2016 21:15
@maggienj this is using bootstrap (note this page goes up and down as it's what I'm currently working on via a udemy bootcamp)
Jonathan Herman
@lantech19446
Jun 21 2016 21:16
RoR means you don't get charged bail you just make a written statement and then await your court date
Lily Romano
@Lilyheart
Jun 21 2016 21:16
The code is similar to what you would find here under /YelpCamp/v1
Maggie
@maggienj
Jun 21 2016 21:18
sure... i will look at those..
David Castner
@davidjcastner
Jun 21 2016 21:19
@maggienj was this part of a hackathon?
Lily Romano
@Lilyheart
Jun 21 2016 21:19
For example, here is some ejs stuff that uses bootstrap as well, (column grid stuff, thumbnail, etc).
            <% campgrounds.forEach(function(campground){ %>
                <div class="col-md-3 col-sm-6">
                    <div class="thumbnail">
                        <img src="<%= campground.image %>">
                        <div class="caption text-center">
                            <h4><%= campground.name %></h4>
                        </div>
                    </div>
                </div>
            <% }); %>
Maggie
@maggienj
Jun 21 2016 21:21
well it s part of a "code for america" project.... and then we just used the same project in last weekend's hackathon ... just in the best interest of moving this forward for the township.
that is cool Lily. @Lilyheart i will use that..
Maggie
@maggienj
Jun 21 2016 21:33
@Lilyheart what is the specialty of this site https://ide.c9.io/ ? I just signed up on it...
is it just used as an online ide?
David Castner
@davidjcastner
Jun 21 2016 21:35
@maggienj it's a development environment. Being online and having prebuilt setups ensures that the dev environment is consistant.
Lily Romano
@Lilyheart
Jun 21 2016 21:35
@davidjcastner can correct me if I use the wrong terms, but cloud9 lets you create a cloud development environment including server side backend stuff (and has great github integration). You could create a workspace right from your github repo and run the server from there.
Maggie
@maggienj
Jun 21 2016 21:36
awesome!
Lily Romano
@Lilyheart
Jun 21 2016 21:36
Especially in teaching things, it eliminate that time spent trying to get software installed on everyone's laptop where each one might need something different.
David Castner
@davidjcastner
Jun 21 2016 21:36
Yes @Lilyheart also highlighted another benefit, which it that it has great github integration :+1:
:octocat: for the win!
Danielle Butler
@dbutler22
Jun 21 2016 21:36
oh wow!
Lily Romano
@Lilyheart
Jun 21 2016 21:36
While @davidjcastner and I might not agree on bootstrap, we both lurve github.
So I could test and run my server and even you could see and interact with it as well (testing) but the server does turn itself off after not being used for awhile. So you can't use it to deploy code. development only.
David Castner
@davidjcastner
Jun 21 2016 21:38
Codepen acts like a cloud based development environment for the front end (client side), and Cloud9 is the back end version (server side)
Maggie

Colt Steele's bootcamp has been awesome for me. Matches my learning style. "YelpCamp" is the ongoing project you work on as you make your way through the backend stuff.
Mike
@dcpking
Jun 21 2016 22:01
I've spent two days fighting the insanities of managerial designers, and this evening fighting the idiots at my email supplier who have suddenly decided that they don't want to "see" messages from Thunderbird <grrrr> I can get email but not send it.
Time for a new email site, methinks!
(sorry for the rant)
Later toniht I'll finally get to the Udemy bootcamp and start chasing you, Lily
Lily Romano
@Lilyheart
Jun 21 2016 22:02
I'm sure everyone else is sick of them, but these are also things I made for Colt Steele's class Color Game & Circles!. Color Game I enhanced pass the lesson though as @davidjcastner and @lancelot323 wanted more challenging things.
Better hurry! I should be done next week.
David Castner
@davidjcastner
Jun 21 2016 22:03
@maggienj feel free to post programming related questions here as well. There are plenty of people with a variety of experience that will be able to help. Also if make sure to share your intentions/code/errors, it speeds up the process.

Jun 21 2016 22:10
wow... sure... will do so @davidjcastner . Thanks for the heads up on it!
sure.. @Lilyheart (on that ColtS's class... very intriguing ... i had been reading the feedback from other students on this class... few pppl had mentioned that he culd have used angular.js instead of vanilla js for frontend validations)
Lily Romano
@Lilyheart
Jun 21 2016 22:12
Probably. But he mentions that he does want to keep things as generic as possible as who knows what kinda shop the students will be going into. Once you understand the basics and how the underlying tech works, it's easy to expand.

None at all!
database is up and running, can add campgrounds and view details. MongoDB is pretty interesting. Not gonna lie. https://personal-projects-lilyheart.c9users.io/campgrounds

I'm getting a lot this evening, although stuff from FB or YouTube plays fine. It's kinda weird - there's always one thread or another maxed out, but that doesn't seem to correlate with the pauses
Aha! I can see it, I think ... long pauses in the network traffic

I'm so used to relational databases (using them for decades) that it's required me to have to rethink things a bit. But other than that, it's been fun. MongoDB + Mongoose is what we've been using in class.
looking at tomorrow, it's gonna be 2 hours of going over REST. wheeeeee
I probably won't finish before the meetup tho.

FCC teaches Mongo to beginners? I'm not sure I agree with that
MongoDB is a neat database, but not common in Enterprises and needs signficant setup attention to in order to ensure data integrity
