comp went to 0%; back at it now
i’ll give it a test
Eric Phy
@SimplyPhy
Jul 22 2016 00:54
@davidjcastner sadly, it doesn’t work
returns Uncaught TypeError: Cannot read property 'b' of undefined
David Castner
@davidjcastner
Jul 22 2016 00:55
Hack code is bad which is the moral on the story
Eric Phy
@SimplyPhy
Jul 22 2016 00:56
my guess is you were close
David Castner
@davidjcastner
Jul 22 2016 00:58
Oh it worked for my codepen. Just it's probably specific to everyone's code. The 17 isn't guaranteed
Eric Phy
@SimplyPhy
Jul 22 2016 00:58
yeah you’re right…hmm
od
odd*
actually, maybe it would work if i put it outside the initMap() function (though every damn thing else seems to be more or less required to be in there)
negative :(
David Castner
@davidjcastner
Jul 22 2016 01:00
Maybe I think it depends on the order you define event listeners. That's my guess and only just a guess
You familiarize yourself with the chrome dev tools I bet you could find what it is for your code
Eric Phy
@SimplyPhy
Jul 22 2016 01:02
yeah, though it’s have to wait for another day
Lily Romano
@Lilyheart
Jul 22 2016 01:02
If anyone finds a most excellent source for learning browser dev tools, I would love to promote it.
Eric Phy
@SimplyPhy
Jul 22 2016 01:03
All I have to do prior to submission for my app is error handling and implement multiplatform/display/input responsiveness
David Castner
@davidjcastner
Jul 22 2016 01:04
@Lilyheart unfortunately the way I learned is through lots and lots of experimenting so I don't know of any good resources
Lily Romano
@Lilyheart
Jul 22 2016 01:04
yar, trial and error here too. But so many people would benefit from something a bit more formal.
also, admittedly, the udacity website performance course is actually pretty good
it’s taught mostly by Ilya Grigorik
Lily Romano
@Lilyheart
Jul 22 2016 01:07
preferably free or single low cost. I’ll promote entire subscription model sites, but not just for one thing.
both are free
I did the first, and it’s good
the second is probably similar, but more advanced
actually, the second is just more focused on fps in web apps, i think
i just studied that on my on via google’s web dev docs
Lily Romano
@Lilyheart
Jul 22 2016 01:11
I’m looking for something on chrome dev tools, firefox dev tools etc. How to use the console, Inspecting elements, Adding event listener breakpoints etc.
Eric Phy
@SimplyPhy
Jul 22 2016 01:12
the first course, at least, is almost entirely devoted to chrome dev tools
well, at least largely
i think treehouse lets you go through a course for free, and definitely has a 7 day free pass. anyways, good luck
Eric Phy
@SimplyPhy
Jul 22 2016 01:17
if single low cost means $12, then https://www.udemy.com/google-chrome-development-tools-updated-2016/ might be a good option
finally, i’ll restate that that first udacity course i linked to is good, and involves a good bit of it’s time going over key points of chrome dev tools for professionals
and i don’t recommend udacity courses lightly :P
Eric Phy
@SimplyPhy
Jul 22 2016 01:37
just used gh-pages to airdrop the site to safari on my phone; AWESOME
thanks @Lilyheart :D
Eric Phy
@SimplyPhy
Jul 22 2016 01:50
Only things left are responsive ui for mobile, readme file, and js comments!
w00t, the end is in sight! <3
Lily Romano
@Lilyheart
Jul 22 2016 01:56
Gotta love gh-pages
YOU HAVE TO, THERE IS NO CHOICE.
Eric Phy
@SimplyPhy
Jul 22 2016 15:37
Hmm, I’ve pushed ~40 commits to github in the past week, and when I look at my activity, it says I haven’t done anything
Am I missing something?
Lily Romano
@Lilyheart
Jul 22 2016 15:37
Are they on a fork?
oooh, looks like your github might not be set up right. Just a sec.
Eric Phy
@SimplyPhy
Jul 22 2016 15:38
:(
Lily Romano
@Lilyheart
Jul 22 2016 15:38
we can fix it, I just need to figure out the problem first.
yup, the easiest way to see what I'm talking about is in the console in the folder of your repo, type gitk
Eric Phy
@SimplyPhy
Jul 22 2016 15:39
command not found
i’m using gitbash on os x :(
Lily Romano
@Lilyheart
Jul 22 2016 15:40
do you not have git installed? o.O
hmm.. lemme see how on the cli
actually, email shows up on the log as well. git log -1 to just see the HEAD commit.
see the email?
to see your email address, you can type git config -l | grep mail
Do you see the problem?
The first indication that something was wrong, is if you look at the commit history, all the ones that don't have your picture, you aren't getting credit for https://github.com/SimplyPhy/P5_NeighborhoodMap/commits/master
Eric Phy
@SimplyPhy
Jul 22 2016 15:44
hmm
when i do git config -1
Lily Romano
@Lilyheart
Jul 22 2016 15:44
letter l
lowercase L
the log is the number 1
grep will only show you lines with mail on it
Eric Phy
@SimplyPhy
Jul 22 2016 15:46
git config -l shows a bunch of…stuff
xD
Lily Romano
@Lilyheart
Jul 22 2016 15:46
git config -l | grep mail
Eric Phy
@SimplyPhy
Jul 22 2016 15:46
yeah that doesn’t do anything for me
it doesn’t return anything
Lily Romano
@Lilyheart
Jul 22 2016 15:46
ooooh, you never set up GIT! Problem found.
Eric Phy
@SimplyPhy
Jul 22 2016 15:47
when i do git —version, it shows my version of git though?
Lily Romano
@Lilyheart
Jul 22 2016 15:47
git config --global user.email email@gmail.com
git config --global user.name "Name Here"
it's installed, but not set up for you
Eric Phy
@SimplyPhy
Jul 22 2016 15:47
i could have sworn i did that before
Lily Romano
@Lilyheart
Jul 22 2016 15:47
in other words, git doesn't know who you are.
Eric Phy
@SimplyPhy
Jul 22 2016 15:47
chance it might have been removed?
Lily Romano
@Lilyheart
Jul 22 2016 15:47
if you missed the --global than it was only set for that project.
your email on git is SimplyPhy@users.noreply.github.com as it looks like you wanted to keep your email private.
Eric Phy
@SimplyPhy
Jul 22 2016 15:48
i put username in qoutes, yes?
Lily Romano
@Lilyheart
Jul 22 2016 15:48
if that is still the case, set it up with that otherwise the world can figure it out.
In gitk (which works on my mac too, so that is weird) I can tell which commits you did online xD
blob
got it set up so git config -l | grep mail shows something?
Eric Phy
@SimplyPhy
Jul 22 2016 15:50
yup :D
first i put my real email, then changed it to the gituser one
will ppl be able to look at my log to see my other email?
Lily Romano
@Lilyheart
Jul 22 2016 15:51
your real one? Not if you don't have it set up.
Eric Phy
@SimplyPhy
Jul 22 2016 15:52
cool, so can i now get credit for my pushes?
Lily Romano
@Lilyheart
Jul 22 2016 15:52
Going forward, we'll fix the past now.
Eric Phy
@SimplyPhy
Jul 22 2016 15:52
w00t :D
Lily Romano
@Lilyheart
Jul 22 2016 15:53
one more question tho. when I cloned the repo, all your local done and pushed commits had the username Eric Phy but all your GitHub done ones had SimplyPhy. Do you want to keep them seperate? or make them all the same and if so, which do you want?
Eric Phy
@SimplyPhy
Jul 22 2016 15:53
lulz if you stole all my commits xD
same
Lily Romano
@Lilyheart
Jul 22 2016 15:53
I can't push to your repo xD do even if I did.
which?
Eric Phy
@SimplyPhy
Jul 22 2016 15:53
SimplyPhy, I guess
might as well retain my online alias
Lily Romano
@Lilyheart
Jul 22 2016 15:54
I used to use my nickname, but then I realized I wanted to do this for a living, so using a business name for job looking made more sense to me. but that is up to you and the type of job you think you might be looking for.
Eric Phy
@SimplyPhy
Jul 22 2016 15:54
yeah, i was thinking that
is your last name heart?
Lily Romano
@Lilyheart
Jul 22 2016 15:55
No, but wouldn't that be grand!
Eric Phy
@SimplyPhy
Jul 22 2016 15:55
well then, you have just as much of your name in your username as i will :D
Lily Romano
@Lilyheart
Jul 22 2016 15:55
Maybe I should get married and divorced again to someone named Heart this time...
My commits are under "Lily Romano"
Eric Phy
@SimplyPhy
Jul 22 2016 15:55
oh.
hmm
1 sec
Lily Romano
@Lilyheart
Jul 22 2016 15:56
blob
But it's entirely up to you what you want to do.
Eric Phy
@SimplyPhy
Jul 22 2016 16:02
so i decided to google simplyphy to see how much of a web presence i have with that name
and it turns out, only 2 things come up: (that were me)
Lily Romano
@Lilyheart
Jul 22 2016 16:02
Ha
Eric Phy
@SimplyPhy
Jul 22 2016 16:02
a diablo 3 post from years ago (random? - as i made several posts, but only 1 shows up on google)
and two: a real time link to montcode with this page active, open to everyone, regardless of login credentials :hatching_chick:
Lily Romano
@Lilyheart
Jul 22 2016 16:04
This is a public page. Anyone can go to https://gitter.im/MontCode/GeneralChat and read whatever
Eric Phy
@SimplyPhy
Jul 22 2016 16:04
This message was deleted
and finally, the other results for things that have nothing to do with me, including a twitter account that isn’t exactly professional xDD
Lily Romano
@Lilyheart
Jul 22 2016 16:06
I figure, at least with an actual name, I can say "that's not me, someone else must have my name"
Lilyheart gets taken a lot too... my backup Purplelilyheart not so much... that one is all me.
So what did you decide on the name?
Eric Phy
@SimplyPhy
Jul 22 2016 16:16
i think simplyphy still
i can use that as username and just have my real name associated with my github account, yes
?
Lily Romano
@Lilyheart
Jul 22 2016 16:17
The real name on GitHub will be your commit author name when you do something on GitHub.
blob
Whatever is in the name field is the name that will be used on commits.
You could put your real name in the Bio section, but that's the only thing I can think of if you want your commits under the nick.
So, whatever is in the name field you want to match git config --global user.name
IF you want the commits to be the same.
I'm sure plenty of people don't even worry if they are the same xD I just figured, since we are changing things now, might be something you wanna think about.
Lily Romano
@Lilyheart
Jul 22 2016 16:24
@SimplyPhy Do you want to fix the GitHub issue now? or later? Is there a better time?
Lily Romano
@Lilyheart
Jul 22 2016 16:44
@SimplyPhy You seem to be either away or distracted and unfortunately I cannot wait much longer. I put this together, hopefully it will help. Gist
Eric Phy
@SimplyPhy
Jul 22 2016 16:44
whoops sorry i’m here
:(
Lily Romano
@Lilyheart
Jul 22 2016 16:44
hehe, and I'm gone! Gotta make lunch
Eric Phy
@SimplyPhy
Jul 22 2016 16:44
sorry i didn’t mean to leave you hanging
i’ll read the above and make whatever progress i can, and if more is necessary i’ll wait for your convenience
thanks a lot @Lilyheart !
Lily Romano
@Lilyheart
Jul 22 2016 16:48
Okie. I'll be swooping past gitter every now and then. If you decide on Eric Phy instead, just lemme know. It's a quick change to the script at the bottom (but you'll need to run it twice then to update the GitHub commits as well).
Eric Phy
@SimplyPhy
Jul 22 2016 16:52
neato, i’ll give it a go in a moment :D
Lily Romano
@Lilyheart
Jul 22 2016 17:14
FYI - I will be away most of tomorrow. I'll have my phone, but probably won't check in much.
Eric Phy
@SimplyPhy
Jul 22 2016 17:31
@Lilyheart it says “which ref do you want to rewrite?” after i c/p the code you supplied (awesome, by the way :D)
also: i did all of this in a brand new, blank* repo…should i have done it from the directory with my project?
Lily Romano
@Lilyheart
Jul 22 2016 17:33
You should be doing this in a bare copy of your P5 repo. I'll update the gist with the actual details.
Eric Phy
@SimplyPhy
Jul 22 2016 17:34
i think i understand, i’ll cd there and clone the blank
Lily Romano
@Lilyheart
Jul 22 2016 17:34
I updated it
with the actual commands you should use
Eric Phy
@SimplyPhy
Jul 22 2016 17:36
it’s supposed to be “… .com:Simp…”, with the colon there, yes?
Lily Romano
@Lilyheart
Jul 22 2016 17:37
copy and paste. it's safer
Eric Phy
@SimplyPhy
Jul 22 2016 17:37
i ask because git says authenticity of host can’t be established, and asks if i want to continue
Lily Romano
@Lilyheart
Jul 22 2016 17:37
oh, you might not have SSH set up.
Eric Phy
@SimplyPhy
Jul 22 2016 17:37
i thought i did ugh..
Lily Romano
@Lilyheart
Jul 22 2016 17:37
something you should look into. let me change it to the other way
Eric Phy
@SimplyPhy
Jul 22 2016 17:37
well if you think it’s okay, i don’t care
i’ll just say yes if need be
Lily Romano
@Lilyheart
Jul 22 2016 17:38
I updated it to use HTTPS instead of SSH
Eric Phy
@SimplyPhy
Jul 22 2016 17:41
so it said refs were all rewritten; but github stills shows eric phy for p5?
do i need to push again?
Lily Romano
@Lilyheart
Jul 22 2016 17:43
Did you push using the command on the instructions? It's not just a git push
and what does it show when you git log?
Eric Phy
@SimplyPhy
Jul 22 2016 17:43
it shows simplyphy with the correct email for my commits
oh whoops
i didn’t finish the steps listed
sorry :’(
actually,git log doesn’t show my commits from today
i hadn’t pushed those to github, but my files are still up to date from my changes today..
Lily Romano
@Lilyheart
Jul 22 2016 17:46
Did you push your commits from today?
cloning into the bare is only going to clone what exists on the remote.
Eric Phy
@SimplyPhy
Jul 22 2016 17:46
hmm
Lily Romano
@Lilyheart
Jul 22 2016 17:46
you can just delete the bare with no issue.
finish whatever you were doing today and once you can push, try again.
Eric Phy
@SimplyPhy
Jul 22 2016 17:46
okay, well i can just copy/paste the changes i made today, it’s only like 8 lines of code
i’ll just add those changes back after this is finished
Lily Romano
@Lilyheart
Jul 22 2016 17:47
that won't work
not without some fussing.
the parent commit that your changes to won't be the right commit anymore.
oh, i see what your are saying, yeah.
Once you get it all updated on the bare repo and pushed back up, to update your working local copy to match the remote (will loose any non-pushed commit) you will need to git fetch origin && git reset --hard origin/master
Eric Phy
@SimplyPhy
Jul 22 2016 17:50
so after i copy/paste the script you supplied (<3), i just post git push --force --tags origin 'refs/heads/*’ while i’m in the cloned repo and it’s done?
or do i do that in the original repo
Lily Romano
@Lilyheart
Jul 22 2016 17:53
Did you follow every step? including the date portion?
Eric Phy
@SimplyPhy
Jul 22 2016 17:54
i just did the date
it didn’t change anything
Lily Romano
@Lilyheart
Jul 22 2016 17:54
good. sometimes a commit goes wonky.
than yes, you need to push the changes you just made.
Eric Phy
@SimplyPhy
Jul 22 2016 17:55
IT WORKED :D
Lily Romano
@Lilyheart
Jul 22 2016 17:55
until you push, all your changes are local only.
Eric Phy
@SimplyPhy
Jul 22 2016 17:55
so now just git fetch origin && git reset --hard origin/master?
Lily Romano
@Lilyheart
Jul 22 2016 17:56
cool. Yes, in your full repo. (you can delete your --bare one (the folder that ends in .git))
before making any changes in your local, do a git log to make sure you have the updated commits.
Eric Phy
@SimplyPhy
Jul 22 2016 17:57
how do i delete a repo/file via terminal?
rm never seems to work
always says the file doesn’t exist
Lily Romano
@Lilyheart
Jul 22 2016 18:01
rm removes a file. rm -rf folderName deletes folders and everything in them (the r is for recursive, goes into the folder, deletes all the files, goes into folders, deletes all the files etc etc etc).
BE VERY CAREFUL WITH rm -rf
you can wipe your entire computer off the planet with it.
in your case, you want rm -rf P5_NeighborhoodMap.git in the parent folder
Eric Phy
@SimplyPhy
Jul 22 2016 18:02
ha sounds scary :(
Lily Romano
@Lilyheart
Jul 22 2016 18:02
I'll find you a funny story.
Eric Phy
@SimplyPhy
Jul 22 2016 18:02
lols that’s great
Eric Phy
@SimplyPhy
Jul 22 2016 18:02
@Lilyheart how do i active the bot to give you lots of bonus points or watevs ?
Lily Romano
@Lilyheart
Jul 22 2016 18:03
Ha, I woke MontBot up for you.
just do thanks and a user name. Do you use gitter mobile or on the mac or with the mac app?
Eric Phy
@SimplyPhy
Jul 22 2016 18:05

Lily Romano
@Lilyheart
Jul 22 2016 18:06
on the mac app at the top of the page there is a chat room message about MontBot. The webaddress to wake MontBot up is there.
Eric Phy
@SimplyPhy
Jul 22 2016 18:06
lulz ^
Lily Romano
@Lilyheart
Jul 22 2016 18:06
lily must not be a freecodecamp user xD
I don't think you can see the Chatroom global message in the mobile app.
Eric Phy
@SimplyPhy
Jul 22 2016 18:07
when i use that site link i just sign in there and then the bot works?
Lily Romano
@Lilyheart
Jul 22 2016 18:07
don't even need to sign in.
Eric Phy
@SimplyPhy
Jul 22 2016 18:07
oh cool, then i did it earlier
i just saw the login and figured i was locked out
Lily Romano
@Lilyheart
Jul 22 2016 18:07
The server that MontBot is on goes to sleep like every 15 minutes if it's not used.
Just loading the page wakes the server up so that the listener here will get triggered.
Whatever that page is at the heroku address is whatever default thing FreeCodeCamp made when they made CamperBot. I'll probably change it to this chat room at some point... Or if MontCode finally breaks even on $$ I might just way to have MontBot put on a server that never sleeps.
If you ever wanna just test to see if MontBot is awake, https://gitter.im/MontCode/BotTest
Eric Phy
@SimplyPhy
Jul 22 2016 18:13
very nice :D
so yeah, once again, really very super cool of you to put that time in with me lily !
i’ve read that it’s supposed be a pain switching usernames etc on github, but you just made it so easy <3
#GitQueen :P
Lily Romano
@Lilyheart
Jul 22 2016 18:15
np. I've put it a lot of time and effort this past week in cleaning up my repo and commit messages.
Eric Phy
@SimplyPhy
Jul 22 2016 18:15
one day i’ll get more with it with git
right now it still scares me, but i’m warming up
Lily Romano
@Lilyheart
Jul 22 2016 18:16
It was created by Torvalds, so of course it's very complicated and scary :laughing: :laughing: :laughing: :laughing:
Torvalds is my spirit animal. I'm sure of it.
Ugh, it is too hot to work on the house.
Eric Phy
@SimplyPhy
Jul 22 2016 18:21
I’m sure he’d appreciate being dubbed a spirit animal :D
Lily Romano
@Lilyheart

Har, he's have some shit snark reply
Lily Romano
@Lilyheart
Jul 22 2016 18:33
Next summer, the first half of the summer I will focus on house stuff and some minor coding studies and the second half I'll go hard on coding and light on home repairs. This waiting to do home repairs until it's expletive humid is for the birds.
I don't think I'll get the porch ironworks striped and redone this summer. Maybe Thanksgiving?
Eric Phy
@SimplyPhy
Jul 22 2016 18:35
it’s supposed to be 99º on monday :D
that’s not the heat index, either xDD
Lily Romano
@Lilyheart
Jul 22 2016 18:35
Ugh I know. I was thinking that was gonna be my day off, but Adam is coming over on Thursday... so that has to be my day off xD
Lily Romano
@Lilyheart
Jul 22 2016 18:49
imma delete that gist with the directions @SimplyPhy If you wanna keep it, fork it.
Eric Phy
@SimplyPhy
Jul 22 2016 18:50
cool i’ll fork it now
Lily Romano
@Lilyheart
Jul 22 2016 18:50
im pretty sure the fork stays if the parent is poofed. Guess we shall see xD
Eric Phy
@SimplyPhy
Jul 22 2016 18:51
done <3 :D
Lily Romano
@Lilyheart
Jul 22 2016 18:52
I use gist a lot to store things so I like to keep it clean(ish). I poofed my version. Still have yours?
My coat closet was like one of those cartoon closest where when you open the door a house full of stuff falls out. I almost have it organized. Just have to find homes for a few things.
Eric Phy
@SimplyPhy
Jul 22 2016 18:55
yup :D
so it sounds like a. your house is/was in utter disarray and b. your house is becoming really nice :D
Lily Romano
@Lilyheart
Jul 22 2016 18:56

I want to either a) sell it in two years or b) buy out the roommate when I have a full time job.

chrome your browser on the mac?
Eric Phy

i know, i was using them, but then i found out the “touchscroll” input wasn’t being mimiced correctly
but you’re right, definitely should use it for most tests of screen size, etc

Did you see my message where putting your full name on GitHub will make your GitHub commits say your full name and not SimplePhy?
I saw the input and button code on your repo. I don't think there is much you can do to make them shorter but man, are your tabs HUGE! Most code I see these days is 2 spaces and occasionally 4.

I personally ignore the 80 char per line rule. When it come to html descriptive class names really help so it makes it difficult to keep within 80 chars. I use 2 spaces for tab sizing because html gets way more tabs than most code

@SimplyPhy you might want to look into setting a global .gitignore file on your mac. You are pushing some OSX files that you don't need to. Here is a good template from git to start with.

The key is sticking to a good class naming. And using a templating

in javascript I follow the 80 char per line room almost 100%. In HTML... not so much. If it gets to be over 80 chars I do take that as an opportunity to see if something needs to be refactors. Otherwise I leave it.

Viewing punchcards, I have really learned that I don't like to code in the morning. I'm an afternoon/evening person. guess-the-rgb punchcard & yelp-camp punchcard
keep all the code on one line. that first one... is just... guh...

the tabs are screwed up in the github viewer
but yeah idk

that's why I mentioned your tabs xD Spaces > Tabs. Don't have to worry about cross compatibility.

hmm
yeah i’ll look into git ignore soon
i guess i committed the entire folder at least once

git config --global core.excludesfile ~/.gitignore_global and then whatever CLI editor you use (like nano would be nano ~/.gitignore_global and then put that code in it )
I have atom set up as a CLI editor, so I just type atom ~/.gitignore_global to edit it.
do you have sublime set up to open from the CLI?
git rm --cached */.DS_Store will then remove all the mac crap
Eric Phy
@SimplyPhy
Jul 22 2016 22:05
sublime opens when i commit, yeah
Lily Romano
@Lilyheart
Jul 22 2016 22:06
i mean can you type in sublime fileName.html in the CLI and sublime opens and the file is ready to edit?
and a shortcut you might not know.... sublime . (period) would open the entire folder.
I can't remember the last time I clicked on the atom icon to open it. I always use atom . from the CLI to open of the folder as a project.
Eric Phy
@SimplyPhy
Jul 22 2016 22:19
yeah i should def set that up soon
at the very moment my brain is kinda fried and i’m just desperately trying to get this app submitted..unfortunately can’t mentally digest CLI interfacing atm :(
i just finished fixing weird changes in my code from switching 4 space tabs to 2 space tabs across all of sublime
it did some weird things
and i refactored the format of my hmtl code, almost entirely, twice
(i restarted sublime after changed, and lost my cmd+z queue
:cry:

github pages
short form. push the website into a github repository onto a branch named gh-pages (all lowercase, with the dash). Then you can open the webpage at username.github.io/repoName/

1) Do you have git installed on your computer?
2) Is this the WeatherApp you already have on GitHub?

Okie, Step 1, go on github and create a repository. The name will be in the URL so pick something you like! https://github.com/new
Don't initalize the readme.

im debating weather i should use an existing repo
Lily Romano
@Lilyheart
Jul 22 2016 23:51
You can, if that is your thing. If it's a project I want to use as a portfolio project, I keep it in it's own repo. If I'm just messin' around, I have a repo for that.
lemme know what you decide and we can move to Step 2. There are not that many steps. Promise

Lily Romano
@Lilyheart
Jul 22 2016 23:56
Note to everyone tho: If you change a repo name, AND you have a copy of it locally you are working with and pushing. You just need to update the URL of the remote's address.
Step 2) in the top level folder of your project/website on your local computer, type git init
