it’s okay though
Lily Romano

created a package.json
It’s like the file that holds a lot of the important information. kinda like a config file, but different.
Eric Phy
@SimplyPhy
Aug 13 2016 02:10
yeah, i saw. It just kept asking me questions, and given the [lack of] context that Udacity had given me prior to instructing me to run that, I had no idea what to put, so i made up bs
also, i have a feeling I’m going to LOVE this: https://www.browsersync.io

I know @davidjcastner uses that in his gulp setup.

Aug 13 2016 02:11
iirc, i usually only change the version 0.0.1, the starting page (i like app.js) and add my name xD
Eric Phy
@SimplyPhy
Aug 13 2016 02:11

because i can
Lily Romano

so you didn’t rc so you had to look it up? :p
Eric Phy
@SimplyPhy
Aug 13 2016 02:12
har har har
reading things like this makes me feel dumb:
"If you’re already running a local server with PHP or similar, you’ll need to use the proxy mode. Browsersync will wrap your vhost with a proxy URL to view your site."
the first sentence is fine; the second one just reminds me how little i know about certain things
“wrap [my] vhost with a proxy URL”? yes please.
but first, wtf does that mean?
(rhetorical)
Lily Romano
@Lilyheart
Aug 13 2016 02:18
i hear you should always wrap it. but, what do I know? I don’t actually know, but if I had to take a gander… if you are already running a server, it’s going to have it’s own URL as well. Browsersync will wrap that with another URL to get the browsersync functionality.
i don’t think you’ve deal with much back end stuff. A static page can be viewed in your browser like file:// instead of http. backend runs a server that needs the http. different things that I can’t explain very well at 10 p.m. xD
Eric Phy
@SimplyPhy
Aug 13 2016 02:20
ha, you know you have no life when you show up at the library @6pm on friday to discover it closed, and then go to starbucks to keep working, and you’re the only person there basically the entire night
ha no worries, and correct, i haven’t done much backend stuff
python -m SimpleHTTPServer or watevs it is and gh-pages are basically my crowning server side achievements thus far
and localStorage makes me feel cool xD
Lily Romano
@Lilyheart
Aug 13 2016 02:22

Jonathan Herman

Aug 13 2016 02:24

Eric Phy
@SimplyPhy
Aug 13 2016 02:24

Jonathan Herman
@lantech19446
Aug 13 2016 02:27
do you like guns?
Eric Phy
@SimplyPhy
Aug 13 2016 02:27
ha, random thought: it’s funny how vikings are almost always depicted as “the good guys” in pop culture, whereas in the general publics pretense of history, they’re understood as being villains
Jonathan Herman
@lantech19446
Aug 13 2016 02:28
true
Eric Phy
@SimplyPhy
Aug 13 2016 02:28
hmm, do i like guns...
i honestly don’t know, i have very little experience with them
and very little general knowledge
to the best of my knowledge, they tend to be loud; and i generally avoid having them aimed at me
Jonathan Herman
@lantech19446
Aug 13 2016 02:29
o ok for some reason all my techy friends myself included shoot and/or carry
Eric Phy
@SimplyPhy
Aug 13 2016 02:29
my father had a good many guns, and i was told i was to inheret his, but he didn’t have a will before he died, so no guns for me
nobody ever seems to want to hurt me, so i’ve been fortunate enough not to need a gun yet
Jonathan Herman
@lantech19446
Aug 13 2016 02:32
sometimes fun to kill paper lol i refuse to hunt and doubt i'll ever need it for people
Eric Phy
@SimplyPhy
Aug 13 2016 02:34
ha, yeah i suppose i could come to appreciate a bit of raw power
speaking of hunt: i saw a hawk barely fail to capture a squirrel off the ground today
it was pissed xD
the squirrel was terrified

Eric Phy
@SimplyPhy
Aug 13 2016 02:36
also, nearly hit a vulture (aka teradactyl) driving today
nope..can’t say i’ve ever actually seen a baby fox to begin with. is it pretty wild
?
Jonathan Herman
@lantech19446
Aug 13 2016 02:40
the fact that they can lift it is kind of insane just snatched right off the ground
Eric Phy
@SimplyPhy
Aug 13 2016 02:41
there are some massive birds out there
Jonathan Herman
@lantech19446
Aug 13 2016 02:41
yep I grew up in flourtown and we had some peregrine falcons
Eric Phy
@SimplyPhy
Aug 13 2016 04:37
ha, i used to work basically exclusively in flourtown and lansdale
@davidjcastner since you’ve more recently gotten involved with BDD, have you implemented continuous integration into your workflow? I just discovered it.

I doubt you'll get gunned down here in Lansdale @SimplyPhy !
Eric Phy
@SimplyPhy
Aug 13 2016 04:39
ha, that all depends on whether or not @lantech19446 and his tech friends take a liking to me xD
Mike
@dcpking
Aug 13 2016 04:40
Ha! He seemed to get on ok with me, and I wasn't wearing Kevlar! :)
Oh oops! It's tomorrow already and I only just noticed! How come this keeps on happening? See y'all tomorrow (well, later today!)
David Castner
@davidjcastner
Aug 13 2016 12:32
@SimplyPhy I have used continuous integration before getting in BDD. I use travisci on my personal projects (github student dev pack gives makes it free for private repos) and I circleci at work because they offer one free build server for an organization's repo

So I wanted to know how hot it was in the house.. but I don't have a thermometer... so I made one. I think I might have a problem.

@Lilyheart If you think it's wrong, 'cos it's reading 99F, then you've built in 3-hour-prescience. Your next task is to build a TARDIS ! If it reads 107F then you've added in compensation for humidity, and it's showing what it feels like, not what it is! :)
Lily Romano
@Lilyheart
Aug 13 2016 15:44
heh. I'd hope it's neither inside the house. Eventually I'll have a temp humidity sensor, but things from china take... awhile.....
I was hoping to have that part of the home automation done before school, but no luck I think.

I've had the formula for the humidex sitting as a comment in my scripts forever xD

Making the folder that holds all the config files for the home automation into a GitHub repo was the best thing I've done. Since there is no full "testing environment", I am using branches to keep testing code separate.

hi All, I have a js question for you. How will I go about storing an ul list in a js variable. I also want to dynamically append items to the list as well. How will I go about that?
