Looks like I'm going to build door and window sensors. Everything on the market is just so expensive.
Eric Phy
@SimplyPhy
Aug 16 2016 13:56
so i found outdated info in someone’s readme.md on github, and i want to change it. should I…
a. pull request
b. comment file
c. create issue
d. i’m an idiot, none of the above
?
Eric Phy
@SimplyPhy
Aug 16 2016 14:06
nevermind i figured it out
Lily Romano
@Lilyheart
Aug 16 2016 14:07
PR unless they request otherwise
Eric Phy
@SimplyPhy
Aug 16 2016 14:08
just did my first production fork/pull request :grin:
ha i was totally expecting to screw up in some stupid way. seems it went okay :shit:
Lily Romano
@Lilyheart
Aug 16 2016 14:09
Awesome
Eric Phy
@SimplyPhy
Aug 16 2016 14:11
does it matter what the branch name is that you have your pull request in, or is that completely irrelevant?
like they use master, and you use patch-1
noob alert
Lily Romano
@Lilyheart
Aug 16 2016 14:12
A descriptive name is always the best practice.
fix-issue#1-linkwrong etc etc. Otherwise as you use more and more branches your branch history is like patch-1 patch-2 patch-3 and you have to dig into the diffs to figure out wth you did.
Eric Phy
@SimplyPhy
Aug 16 2016 14:13
yeah my commit message is fine, which i think you’re talking about
Lily Romano
@Lilyheart
Aug 16 2016 14:13
I'm talking about the branch* name
Eric Phy
@SimplyPhy
Aug 16 2016 14:14
okay cool, that makes sense for me, but does it matter for the pull request?
like did i make him have more work because i sent patch-1 as a pull request to his master branch?
Lily Romano
@Lilyheart
Aug 16 2016 14:15
no, assuming it's a clean PR (which it should be unless they are mid something) it's a single button press as far as I know.
Eric Phy
@SimplyPhy
Aug 16 2016 14:17
cool, just didn’t want to be the ass that sent the default patch branch as a pull request to the master, if that makes his master branch 1 commit behind the patch-1 that he accepts, and now he has to merge the branches or something
i don’t know, i’m still a github/git idiot :(
in other news: i’ve gotten some good gulp practice in :D
Eric Phy
@SimplyPhy
Aug 16 2016 14:27
it looks like for my next project (starting today) i’ll be using gulp for the first time, learning polymer and using it, and learning sass (maybe) and using it
not 100% sure about learning sass just yet, but i’m thinking it’d be good to get it out of the way sooner than later
Lily Romano
@Lilyheart
Aug 16 2016 14:29
make a test repo and do branches and PRs on it. You can do pure text files and just work on github.com, no need for CLI if you just wanna see how PRs work.
Eric Phy
@SimplyPhy
Aug 16 2016 14:31
once i have time :(
as usual, digressions, however relevant they may be in the long run, are timestaking in the short run
maybe i’ll put that on my halfday/hour before bed todo
Lily Romano
@Lilyheart
Aug 16 2016 14:33
heh, one of those need a break from project A. Take 10-15 minutes and fart around with PRs
Eric Phy
@SimplyPhy
Aug 16 2016 14:33
10-15 mins almost always turns into 1-2 hours
Lily Romano
@Lilyheart
Aug 16 2016 14:33
that's what timers are for
look into pomodoro in fact. that theory of time might help you a bit
Eric Phy
@SimplyPhy
Aug 16 2016 14:34
my theory of time is if i don’t finish all this and get a job soon, i go bankrupt xD
but pomodoro shall go on the todo as well :D
Lily Romano
@Lilyheart
Aug 16 2016 14:35
do that one soon. 5 minutes to decide if it's something you wanna try. it helps on focus.
I have an absurd GPA while being in clubs. Pomodoro timers is how I manage.
Lily Romano
@Lilyheart
Aug 16 2016 14:44
Study after study has shown when trying to learn something new most people retain the most from the beginning and the end of your study session. So, if you are studying for 5 hours straight, the stuff in the middle you will have a harder time remembering. A break as small as 5 minutes is all that's needed. Pomodoro helps with that.
Eric Phy
@SimplyPhy
Aug 16 2016 15:03
read it, downloaded app for it, will eventually try it
right now i’m intimidated by the overhead that it might entail, as i already document my sessions (spans of work per day — usually 3), full day review, week review, month review, and take notes on 5 different subcategories of each course segment (of which there are almost 700) that i do
but yeah, it might fit in and be useful
Lily Romano
@Lilyheart
Aug 16 2016 15:08
I'm curious what you read that would add overhead. I set whatever time I need to set, then I work until the timer is done. Then 5 minutes to pet a cat, or get the mail, or get some water etc etc then back at it again. Longer "breaks" I usually do fun "work". Read articles, browse github, etc.
I get more done in less time
Eric Phy
@SimplyPhy
Aug 16 2016 15:17
it wants you to have a goal set for that time; therefore, i need to have goals set using increments of 25 mins
i have trouble enough figuring out how many days a task will take, let alone how many 25 min intervals it will take xD
Lily Romano
@Lilyheart
Aug 16 2016 15:18
Probably read an article that geared more towards a "job" instead of "education", I just do what needs to be done and take my breaks and come back when it's time to work again.
Eric Phy
@SimplyPhy
Aug 16 2016 15:20
yeah i used to take a break every 20 mins under the pretense of bloodflow, but i found that i was usually right in the middle of something everytime the timer went off
Lily Romano
@Lilyheart
Aug 16 2016 15:21
I use a pomodoro timer that starts counting up after the timer goes off and has a snooze button! I snooze more often than I probably should but it lets me finish my task.
Eric Phy
@SimplyPhy
Aug 16 2016 15:22
so basically you’re just recommending taking a break every 25 mins, then? the pomodoro technique seems to entail a full productivity measuring workflow, unless i missed something
Lily Romano
@Lilyheart
Aug 16 2016 15:24
Traditionally it's 25 minutes. But say I was studying my socioligy book.. which is horrible horribley dry.... I would do 15-5 because that is all my attention span would go.
But coding for a project is more involved, so I might do 35-5 even.
Eric Phy
@SimplyPhy
Aug 16 2016 15:25
okay, so you endorse breaks (i agree, and should probably do more), but you aren’t necessarily recommending i do this..
Lily Romano
@Lilyheart
Aug 16 2016 15:26
I could study for 3 hours straight and fight the focus... or study 25-5-25-5-25-35 and only actually study for 75 minutes and get the same amount done and do lunch or dinner on the 35.
It's finding the numbers that work for you and the task.
the whole "check the box" or "put an x" is for paper people :p we have apps for that.
Eric Phy
@SimplyPhy
Aug 16 2016 15:27
pomodoro
Lily Romano
@Lilyheart
Aug 16 2016 15:27
i use an app called tomatina on android. it counts my work, short and long breaks.
i have this absurb list setup too xD based out of todoist and a custom built dashboard that displays on my third screen.
Eric Phy
@SimplyPhy
Aug 16 2016 15:29
yeah i really want to integrate a seamless todo into my workflow to organize supplemental tasks and digressive interests
like articles to read, etc
i’ve tried so many diferent ways to devise such mechanisms into my workflow, but they also just end up sitting in forgotten apps/folder
Lily Romano
@Lilyheart
Aug 16 2016 15:30
blob
Eric Phy
@SimplyPhy
Aug 16 2016 15:31
i need it to be SUPER easy and i just haven’t found a way that works for me yet
Lily Romano
@Lilyheart
Aug 16 2016 15:31
I still struggle with the perfect system for that as well.
Eric Phy
@SimplyPhy
Aug 16 2016 15:32
9 hours scheduled for sleep (or “bedtime”, anyways), nice :D
Lily Romano
@Lilyheart
Aug 16 2016 15:32
I know... right... as you know I never go to bed at 10:30 xD I'm still on here.
It's a calendar block tho. I can't put anything else there :p
Eric Phy
@SimplyPhy
Aug 16 2016 15:32
not to mention your wallstaring contests
:P
Lily Romano
@Lilyheart
Aug 16 2016 15:32
1 a.m. if I'm lucky, but I never "schedule" anything.
/sigh. the wall always wins.
I RSS a lot and use newsblur.com. I check my RSS in the morning and the evening (while in bed usually). Anything major I come across that I want focus and soon on I put into instapaper. On Saturdays or the 35 minute pomodoro breaks I go through instapaper.
Things I want to read but can't yet (say about a tech I don't understand yet but I want to read the article after I so, e.g. advance gulp or integrate saas into something) I put into Evernote. I check Evernote during the monthly review.
Today's calendar seems light because of code and chat. xD
Eric Phy
@SimplyPhy
Aug 16 2016 15:35
todo
sigh
Lily Romano
@Lilyheart
Aug 16 2016 15:35
My calendar entries are full sentences because a disembodied voice says them out loud when it comes time xD
The upper right is a summary of homework assignments due for school which is fed from another system but it's clear atm because it's break time!
Well, the first little gray zero does change sometimes. That's how many flashcard sets I need to review today that is programmatically determined through some absurd formula nonsense which I'm good at.
Eric Phy
@SimplyPhy
Aug 16 2016 15:38
try this again…
damn
Lily Romano
@Lilyheart
Aug 16 2016 15:38
If it's on your clipboard and you are not on mobile, you can just "paste"
Oh, yeah dropbox likes to obfuscate the actual image url.
If you go to https://www.dropbox.com/s/p51f4b34r8j9yyl/Screenshot%202016-08-16%2011.34.04.png you will see it's actually a webpage.

another try
Lily Romano
@Lilyheart
Aug 16 2016 15:41
right click the image and copy image address. dropbox is a weenie
Eric Phy
@SimplyPhy
Aug 16 2016 15:42
ha wait how ddi you get that?
lily made me do it
Lily Romano
@Lilyheart
Aug 16 2016 15:42
the url may end in .jpg or whatever, but it's actually a webpage, not an image.
Eric Phy
@SimplyPhy
Aug 16 2016 15:42
it doesn’t work for me
i did the right click copy image address and it doesn’t work
i tried appending the url with ?raw=1 as well, no good
Lily Romano
@Lilyheart
Aug 16 2016 15:43
because it would still be a link to a webpage. Not a link to an image file.
Eric Phy
@SimplyPhy
Aug 16 2016 15:43
how did you get the image?
Lily Romano
@Lilyheart
Aug 16 2016 15:44
Your URL above
https://photos-1.dropbox.com/t/2/AADFVvrIhGnM2ITQptuvuZb4-BODbDI-HMC_VQx0BAH_WA/12/70288481/png/32x32/1/_/1/2/Screenshot%202016-08-16%2011.34.04.png/EJSf1jYYsoYEIAcoBw/SNHufQU8ApkFEjSA5SSzgDK_xXeW3s1tp1BqLzf2hi8?dl=0&size=2048x1536&size_mode=3
When I right click and say copy image address on windows/chrome.
https://photos-6.dropbox.com/t/2/AAAaDj5tGNudXWNet82EPmku3ISHxdddn8nSIgSyDYKYUw/12/70288481/png/32x32/3/1471377600/0/2/Screenshot%202016-08-16%2011.41.36.png/EJSf1jYYs4YEIAcoBw/UzqKrDU5h0u5jRaVI7NvRSRpVZFJmNeatWho9wympWk?size_mode=3&size=2048x1536&dl=0
Eric Phy
@SimplyPhy
Aug 16 2016 15:44
oh, what technique did you chose for loading it here
Lily Romano
@Lilyheart
Aug 16 2016 15:44
Mine could be diff because you are signed into the "owner" of the files account.
I dunno what you be askin' I loaded the URL that is behind that "broken image" link which took me to https://www.dropbox.com/s/p51f4b34r8j9yyl/Screenshot%202016-08-16%2011.34.04.png (right click the broken image, open in new tab)
When that page loaded I just right clicked the image and clicked "Copy image address". Came back here and manually wrapped it in it's tags.
I see what was wrong with your adding raw code. You only want one ? in the url. You add multiple arguments after the ? by concatting them with &
Eric Phy
@SimplyPhy
Aug 16 2016 15:48
trying again
Lily Romano
@Lilyheart
Aug 16 2016 15:49
chrome?
Eric Phy
@SimplyPhy
Aug 16 2016 15:49
yeah
Lily Romano
@Lilyheart
Aug 16 2016 15:49
if so, open the link in incognito mode so that you aren't logged in. That might fix.
Could be dropbox and their weird logged in permissions setup.
Eric Phy
@SimplyPhy
Aug 16 2016 15:51
when i click the image and open in new tab or copy image link, it downloads a file
even in incognito
:(
Lily Romano
@Lilyheart
Aug 16 2016 15:52
go here in icognito mode you should be able to right click and open in incog from there.
Eric Phy
@SimplyPhy
Aug 16 2016 15:52
another go
Lily Romano
@Lilyheart
Aug 16 2016 15:53
My last webdev job was before github was the powerhouse it is today (nearly a decade ago) and I put all my work in dropbox to share. many hours spent debugging it's nonsense.
are you putting the raw at the end?
Eric Phy
@SimplyPhy
Aug 16 2016 15:53
test
Lily Romano
@Lilyheart
Aug 16 2016 15:53

I can trash all my crappy ss now xD
Eric Phy
@SimplyPhy
Aug 16 2016 16:00
it was a stupid mistake, as usual
haha yup xD
Lily Romano
@Lilyheart
Aug 16 2016 16:00
meh, it happens to the best of us
Eric Phy
@SimplyPhy
Aug 16 2016 16:01
i had to delete the dl=0 and replace it with raw=1
not bad, just me = dumb as usual
cool; now i can quickly and easily share screenshots yay!
Lily Romano
@Lilyheart
Aug 16 2016 16:01
shouldn't need to change anything o.O
Eric Phy
@SimplyPhy
Aug 16 2016 16:02
cmd+shift+4, select area, and then c/p wherever, and replace dl=0 with raw=1
done
Lily Romano
@Lilyheart
Aug 16 2016 16:02
if you are just doin' that for here, paste it here. dropbox unnecessary. github will host it.
Eric Phy
@SimplyPhy
Aug 16 2016 16:02
i have dropbox setup to automatically copy a public link to my clipboard of whatever screenshot i take
it has dl=0 autoset in that link
Lily Romano
@Lilyheart
Aug 16 2016 16:03
ooooh that would do it.
Eric Phy
@SimplyPhy
Aug 16 2016 16:03
:D
yeah it’s neat
Lily Romano
@Lilyheart
Aug 16 2016 16:03
then the link are pasting is coming from the app and that is a whole 'nother beast.
Eric Phy
@SimplyPhy
Aug 16 2016 16:03
and now i can actually use it xD
so anyways.. that image is of one of my efforts to organize a to-do
Lily Romano
@Lilyheart
Aug 16 2016 16:04
on the macbook I cmd-shift-4 and then just drag from the desktop into the gitter window because I'm lazy like that.
Eric Phy
@SimplyPhy
Aug 16 2016 16:04
i organized it all right xD but never used the damn thing
Lily Romano
@Lilyheart
Aug 16 2016 16:04
That is a well rated productivity app that has been around awhile.
:thumbsup:
I went with Todoist because it's OS agnostic and I use a lot of different OS's and environments.
Eric Phy
@SimplyPhy
Aug 16 2016 16:06
i just need something where i can use a hotkey to bring up an app/program, hit tab for setting a new task, and have basically automatic access to relevant links
Lily Romano
@Lilyheart
Aug 16 2016 16:07
same xD
Eric Phy
@SimplyPhy
Aug 16 2016 16:07
safari’s built in reading list is decent for quick links to articles, but no to-do or structuring
Lily Romano
@Lilyheart
Aug 16 2016 16:07
but also have access on my phone and windows and linux and OSX and an open API so I can pull tasks to display in other places as well.
I've been thinking about getting a 7-segment display and making some kind of countdown timer on desk that shows how many tasks left for the day xD
Eric Phy
@SimplyPhy
Aug 16 2016 16:08
ha nice
doomsday clock reset daily
Lily Romano
@Lilyheart
Aug 16 2016 16:08
heh
I could also make my desk LED color dependent on how many tasks I've completed vs haven't xD (the lights under my shelf). Winter break project maybe.
I've researched productivity and related apps for nearly 15 years now @ _ @ I feel old now, going to bed.
Eric Phy
@SimplyPhy

@dcpking_twitter have you broken free from the tyranny of your project?
@SimplyPhy how goes your gulp studies? Or haven't started yet?
Lily Romano
@Lilyheart
Aug 16 2016 21:43
@davidjcastner I know you've used gulp but have you used grunt? I'm just curious on your opinion between the two.
Matthew Hassell
@mhassell
Aug 16 2016 21:48
Hello!
Lily Romano
@Lilyheart
Aug 16 2016 21:48
Hey Matt! Good to see you over here. Looks like it might end up being a quiet night. I blame this heat. Ugh.
Eric Phy
@SimplyPhy
Aug 16 2016 21:48
Hey lily yeah I've gotten passed the basics and a bit into intermediate usage
Matthew Hassell
@mhassell
Aug 16 2016 21:49
Yeah, the heat is rough, I'm going to the pool right after this to cool off a bit, but until then, coding!
Lily Romano
@Lilyheart
Aug 16 2016 21:49
@mhassell Any projects you are working on yet?
Eric Phy
@SimplyPhy
Aug 16 2016 21:50
And while you didn't ask me, gulp is a concurrent by default and uses more js friendly syntax. I forget the rest
Lily Romano
@Lilyheart
Aug 16 2016 21:50
I had picked up a udemy course on python but I haven't had a chance to go through it yet @_@

Okay time to shower, then grab feast, then finishing studying flexbox, then sass
Matthew Hassell
@mhassell
Aug 16 2016 21:51
@Lilyheart Not yet, I'm thinking about toying with some code from the book Black Hat Python, I got it in a humble bundle 4 months ago and never used it
Eric Phy
@SimplyPhy
Aug 16 2016 21:52
Coursera has a ton of free Python courses too
And as also, treehouse is the shit
Okay shower for real
Matthew Hassell
@mhassell
Aug 16 2016 21:52
cool, I'll have to check out the coursera stuff too
Eric Phy
@SimplyPhy
Aug 16 2016 21:54
Okay last comment: I've gotten into the habit of signing up for coursera courses that seem interesting and not doing them, just so I have access in the future in case the courses are taken down (happens to most of them) or they get monetized
Matthew Hassell
@mhassell
Aug 16 2016 21:54
Sure, good idea
Eric Phy
@SimplyPhy
Aug 16 2016 21:54
I've got quite the library of archived coursera courses :)
Lily Romano
@Lilyheart
Aug 16 2016 21:55
Someone made a coursera downloader. I posted it on Facebook I think awhile back, back when Coursera changed their model and removed a crap ton of their free courses.
They udemy course I got (during the christmas $5 sale way back when) goes with this book, automate the boring stuff that you can download for free.
Matthew Hassell
@mhassell
Aug 16 2016 21:56
cool, that was one of the books I downloaded from the humble bundle
Lily Romano
@Lilyheart
Aug 16 2016 21:56
nice!
gotta love humble bundle
tho, I usually say humble bumble :O

Aug 16 2016 22:10

Matthew Hassell
@mhassell
Aug 16 2016 22:32
what are you making?
Lily Romano
@Lilyheart
Aug 16 2016 22:32

a few temp/hum sensors too
Matthew Hassell
@mhassell
Aug 16 2016 22:33
sounds cool-is this part of the home automation thing you mentioned before?
Lily Romano
@Lilyheart
Aug 16 2016 22:33

Matthew Hassell
@mhassell
Aug 16 2016 22:44
okay, I'm going to take off. Hopefully i'll be able to make tomorrow's library meetup for an hour or two.
goodnight!
Lily Romano
@Lilyheart
Aug 16 2016 22:44
cheapest off the shelf I could find to sense 19 windows was $442 and that's including the fact I already paid for the hub to receive.
parts cost me about 110.
Okie @mhassell ! Maybe see you tomorrow! @SimplyPhy you comin'?
Eric Phy
@SimplyPhy
Aug 16 2016 23:03

Lily Romano
@Lilyheart
