so @davidjcastner @Lilyheart @whoever:

Anybody know why in the hell I can’t get my create-event div to stack over my view-events div? Note: I’d like to avoid using position: absolute or something else that would deactive the flex properties.

https://simplyphy.github.io/Senior_P1_EventPlanner/
https://github.com/SimplyPhy/Senior_P1_EventPlanner/tree/master/scss

also no pressure: i posted this up on udacity and i pay them to help me

i’ll look tomorrow if you don’t get an answer by then when I’m upright.

@davidjcastner
Aug 23 2016 01:58
@SimplyPhy what do you mean by stack over?
Eric Phy
@SimplyPhy
Aug 23 2016 03:04
Like z-index stack
David Castner
@davidjcastner
Aug 23 2016 03:06
When using zindex recommend using a z index generator. I'm on my phone but tomorrow I can post mine. You give it a list of selectors and it orders them for you
But a larger z index means it will appear on top. In my opinion there are very few cases in which it should be used
Eric Phy
@SimplyPhy
Aug 23 2016 03:12
right, i'm not sure that i can use z-index anyways, and i'm confident i don't have to, at least based on what I've read. I just couldn't seem to get the one div over the other using flex-box, and i've seen it done. anyways, i'll figute it out soon enough i imagine
David Castner
@davidjcastner
Aug 23 2016 03:14
To get sibling elements to overlap you will need to use position, top, right, left, and bottom
Child elements by default overlap their parent
Eric Phy
@SimplyPhy
Aug 23 2016 03:31
yeah i'll take a look at it in the morning again, thanks @davidjcastner
so some dude decided he would break the silence in slack @udacity by bitching about a completion review
ha i decided to get involved on Udacity's behalf
i'm hoping it turns into a slugfest; finally something entertaining in there [maybe][i doubt it][sigh]
in other news: i've got like 5 pounds of coffee sludge (oh, sorry..."concentrate") that i'll be using for a cold brew tomorrow morning
it's exciting :D

@SimplyPhy What I meant by a z-index generator is that it adds the z-index values for you, so that organization of the of z index values isn't random.

This is my zindex generator in scss:

$z-index-order: 'div', '.some-class', '#id', '.complex-selector:not(:first-child)';

// requires $z-index-order to be defined
// selectors will be given increasing order
// meaning the last selector has the largest z-index
// takes a list of selectors in string form
@each $z-index-selector in $z-index-order {
    $z-index-value: index($z-index-order, $z-index-selector);
    #{$z-index-selector} {
        z-index: $z-index-value;
    }
}

which produces the following css

div {
    z-index: 1;
}
.some-class {
    z-index: 2;
}
#id {
    z-index: 3;
}
.complex-selector:not(:first-child) {
    z-index: 4;
}

Oh neat, that looks handy. Probably not necessary for my little app though

Also one thing I forgot to mention about position is that an absolute position is relative to the first positioned ancestor, so it's important to add position: relative; to the container of the element that you are trying to position, hope that makes sense
.component-container {
    position: relative;
}
.component {
    // now can be lined up with the content (content + padding + border box area, not margin) of it's container
    position: absolute;
}
and lastly when a container is figuring out it's size when using default width & height or auto width & height, fixed or absolute elements aren't taken into account
hope that helps! if you are still having problems, can you put an example in a codepen? it's easier to debug a specific problem

@SimplyPhy re: coffee. It’s been so hot I’ve been making at night when it’s cooler, super strong coffee (3-4x strength) and putting it in the fridge. In the morning I toss it in a nice short tumbler over a few ice cubes and double whatever coffee with milk and it’s a nice smooth morning pickup.

Codepen is good for sharing code to debug... Or you could just use Atom and use atom-pair to share your code tabs

This is a picture of my app in device mode in chrome dev tools:
pic1

This is a picture of my app in chrome with the window size adjusted:
pic2

I only use % and vh/vw sizing properties (aside from a tiny bit of px and em for very smell things which DEF don’t add up to the difference..not even remotely close)

Any thoughts on what might be causing this? It treats any device with any orientation, where width is less than 980px, as if it had 980px.

Lastly, here’s an image of the app in dev tools responsive model, where I manually resized the responsive window:
pic3

maddening
I’m getting tired of getting stuck on crazy nonsense sigh
Lily Romano
@Lilyheart
Aug 23 2016 18:57
If you don't specically set the viewport size, it will default to 980. Put this in your HEAD <meta name="viewport" content="width=device-width, initial-scale=1">

Lily Romano

That sets the viewport size to be the same size as the device-width and the second part is to fix some iOS wonkiness when switching between portrait/landscape.

Yesterday I added a new mode to my game https://lilyheart.github.io/guess-the-rgb/ at the suggestion of @SimplyPhy and now I HAVE to get mobile done as it doesn't handle the extra option well. Now you can guess hsl or hex values.
What are you working in?

Free? FreeCodeCamp is great but you find somethings that need more detail. Then I google just that topic and usually find a blog or article that explains.

Lily Romano

Aug 23 2016 23:30
Things Lily randomly things about: "What is the best trigger to automate the lights turning on in the evening" Static number of minutes before/after sunset don't work. Sun elevation is my new thought.
We have lots of people who pick up heavy things and people who run! @VictorHall @SimplyPhy just to name a few.

the sensor on the cameras that determine if the flash should be used or not.

Lily Romano
@Lilyheart
Aug 23 2016 23:33
The challenge is where you place it. Do you then flag when the lights go on and then don't test after that for X minutes? e.g. Sensor is in room. It gets dark at 8 p.m., lights go on. It's now light. You turn lights off, it's dark, lights come on again etc.
Other option involves making something weather proof and putting it outside but can have similar issues.
Jarrett Faulk
@Jarrett-Faulk
Aug 23 2016 23:34
i believe this sensor would be best deployed as a disco ball near the center of the room
