I decided that the accordion in jQuery UI is no good for my app; and the solution is more jQuery xD
I could use css animations, but oh well

Ugh. Not the most productive day, despite 8 hours 33 minutes spent studying/coding
too much time digging through apis and libraries

anyone here work with java and know a tool that recomplies and runs your code upon save
Lily Romano
@Lilyheart
Sep 06 2016 16:21
No, but jGrasp has quick keyboard shortcuts for save, compile and run.
David Castner
@davidjcastner
Sep 06 2016 16:22
bummer I wonder if gulp will help me
Lily Romano
@Lilyheart
Sep 06 2016 16:23
jGrasp is best for debugging.
Eric Phy
@SimplyPhy
Sep 06 2016 16:35
@davidjcastner wouldn’t a java ide support something like that? I feel like that functionality would be massively in-demand

@SimplyPhy I am trying to setup atom for writing java, and I thought there would be some sort cmd line tool for doing so
also pardon the noob java questions but here it goes: does everything need to be inside a class?
Eric Phy
@SimplyPhy
Sep 06 2016 17:54
OOP baby 😆. Ha idk
Lily Romano
@Lilyheart
Sep 06 2016 17:54
atom has a getter/setter plugin thing. I have to look to see what it is called tho.

@davidjcastner

@Lilyheart you know if jason wertz has a prefered style guide?
Jeff Fritz
@csharpfritz_twitter
Sep 06 2016 18:07
In Java everything needs to be in a class, yes
I forget if they have interfaces in Java
David Castner
@davidjcastner
Sep 06 2016 18:08
@csharpfritz_twitter so what happens if you want to make a helper function, do you have to make a method for it?
Jeff Fritz
@csharpfritz_twitter
Sep 06 2016 18:08
Yes... they do have interfaces in Java.. so class or interface is the required top level.
Yep.. helper functions need to live in a class - but can be marked static so that you don't need to instantiate the class
David Castner
@davidjcastner
Sep 06 2016 18:09
@csharpfritz_twitter thanks! that's what I needed to know
Jeff Fritz

My Java is a little rusty..
I haven't used the Java generics syntax yet
Lily Romano
@Lilyheart
Sep 06 2016 18:10
I’m in class and a student mentioned that when you run, it compiles and saves. IntelliJ apparently does it. I know jGrasp does as well. I doesn’t neccessarily compile the classes if you are running the driver tho.
@davidjcastner I don’t think so re: style guide.
Jeff Fritz
@csharpfritz_twitter
Sep 06 2016 18:11
The IDE tools (like IntelliJ) do have options to save and compile your work.
How are you using Java? Building console apps, web apps, or for Android apps?
David Castner
@davidjcastner
Sep 06 2016 18:16
doing homework and then never using java again after my class is over
Jeff Fritz
@csharpfritz_twitter
Sep 06 2016 18:16
lol... that bad?
David Castner
@davidjcastner
Sep 06 2016 18:17

Java, at first, is a little quirky with syntax in the classes and jar references. A good editor makes that quirkiness go away

Lily Romano
@Lilyheart
Sep 06 2016 18:22
heh (been there done that. heh…) I actually decided I wanted to learn Java for that very reason and picked the college from that. I am disappointed in the language.
David Castner
@davidjcastner
Sep 06 2016 18:23

Jeff Fritz

Jeff Fritz

Java has been stagnating under Oracle's stewardship. The language doesn't make money
re: Minecraft -- there's an amazing plugin for Visual Studio for Minecraft / Java development. I haven't tried it myself, but I've heard good things

@csharpfritz_twitter are you on the developer or sales team?
Jeff Fritz
@csharpfritz_twitter
Sep 06 2016 18:25
I'm on the product team - I set direction for the .NET framework and Visual Studio
consequently, I need to know a LOT of languages and frameworks to compare experiences and understand our products

and that ladies and gents, is how you tell a dumb browser to gtfo
Eric Phy
@SimplyPhy
Sep 06 2016 19:12
tl;dr : browser date object doesn’t understand ‘nth’ dates, e.g. september 15th…so Mr. #ChampionStatus fixed it. muhaha
Eric Phy

Sep 06 2016 19:29
so random question of the day: what is a word like “SimplyPhy” called, when related to it’s relationship to the pronunciation of “Simplify”?
Lily Romano

Eric Phy
@SimplyPhy
Sep 06 2016 19:34

@davidjcastner in the midst of being sick I happen to see your disdain for Java, let me assure you it is shared and is the primary reason I wound up not graduating for computer forensics, I got a 20% in that class and I've tried to teach myself repeatedly and hate it more and more each time.
Eric Phy

Lily Romano

I stayed after class last Thursday and hid in the cafe’. lol

Sep 06 2016 20:53
ah the old "doh, can't use javascript in my java program" yeah i've done that a few time. I also try to markup my programs with html and I want to start everything with a $(document).ready()
Lily Romano
@Lilyheart
Sep 06 2016 20:55
snort I had to explain to my roommate Java vs Javascript is like car vs carpet. There may be a few slight things you could compare (e.g. you can put your feet on them, you can sit on them) but really… they are totally different beasts.
Jarrett Faulk
@Jarrett-Faulk

I highly highly highly highly highly highly (highly) recommend signing up and using GitHub as early as possible. Even for school work. You can sign up for the GitHub student pack and get 2 years of free private repos so you can keep your school in there.
