I may be a minute or 12 late to the chat tonight. I won't be able to leave campus until 4:30 at the earliest. Depends on how long everyone's presentation goes.

Dec 20 2016 22:13
Ooooooh! That's fantastic. I haven't had the opportunity to play with a drone yet, but @davidjcastner has one.
Roie Gat
@roiegat_twitter
Dec 20 2016 22:15
I've written personal apps for other drones in the past. I had a fairly detailed one for my old AR Parrot drone. But I picked up a Phantom 3 Standard on Black Friday sale, since I'm waiting for my Mavic Pro to arrive and been looking deeply in the SDK

lets put it this way...when I graduated with MIS degree, it didn't matter anymore because the internet took off and nothing I learned was relevant anymore. So worked 15 years and got another degree in Information System Security....at least thats still current

Lily Romano
@Lilyheart
Dec 20 2016 22:35
@lantech19446 there is a surprising amount of code behind the google frontpage for as minimal as it looks. Nice project!

Jonathan Herman

Dec 20 2016 22:49
That actually seems pretty cool, more software engineering I imagine but the idea could stick for web stuff

I'm having the weirdest problem, I got the blue sign in button to display with pointed corners with no problem didn't use a button type or border-radius but the ones under the search bar insist on displaying with rounded corners
Lily Romano
@Lilyheart
Dec 20 2016 22:57
You want to either share your code (codepen or something) or push it to github and I'll take a peek.

Hi everybody
Lily Romano
@Lilyheart
Dec 20 2016 23:01
No worries there. Pretty much everyone is new to whatever they are trying to learn.
Hi Tavorodz
@lantech19446 I'm not seeing rounded corners. Did you push the most recent code?
Jonathan Herman
@lantech19446
Dec 20 2016 23:02

I started a few months ago with Python and now JavaScript. I figured these would be a good start since I'm coming from now prior experience.

Dec 20 2016 23:03
What browser @lantech19446 ? Some browsers do wonky default things to things.
developerguy50
@developerguy50
Dec 20 2016 23:03
*no prior
Jonathan Herman
@lantech19446
Dec 20 2016 23:03
page still looks the same and I keep reverting the code since it's not having an impact so you still have the most recent. Just discovered that my buttons aren't inheriting the traits inside the span whether I use id's or classes
firefox I don't think it's the browser though because I accomplished it elsewhere on the page
Roie Gat
@roiegat_twitter
Dec 20 2016 23:05
ok....so got compass to give cords on the app now
developerguy50
@developerguy50
Dec 20 2016 23:05
Big Question....There is no website or program that is just purely one type of language? For example, I can't really make a website with just Python, I'd need some Html, Php, etc as well?
Tavorodz
@Tavorodz
Dec 20 2016 23:05
You are more ahead than me developerguy50. I just have done some challenges in freecodecamp. Is Python a good language to start with
Lily Romano
@Lilyheart
Dec 20 2016 23:06
Firefox buttons are much more rounded than some other browsers. You'll have to reset all the code and program it up from scratch if you want buttons to be consistent.
developerguy50
@developerguy50
Dec 20 2016 23:06
@developerguy50 Python is a great language to start with
Jonathan Herman
@lantech19446
Dec 20 2016 23:06
let me try opening it on chrome and see how it looks
Lily Romano
@Lilyheart
Dec 20 2016 23:07
@developerguy50 for webdevelopment it's a Separation of Concerns reason. Each serves a different function.
There are things you can do and just stay in one language, but they are usually specific purpose and are usually OS specific.
developerguy50
@developerguy50
Dec 20 2016 23:08
I can wrap my head around the concepts easier. I tried starting with Java and was just a tad bit confused. I use code academy and a Microsoft academy 10 hr video.
Lily Romano
@Lilyheart
Dec 20 2016 23:08
Just off the cuff, you could make a calculator in python and only python etc.
Java... is... um.... Java is important and used in a lot of business type applications. Java has a purpose. That being said. I have zero love for Java.
Jonathan Herman
@lantech19446
Dec 20 2016 23:09
I agree about Java
Tavorodz
@Tavorodz
Dec 20 2016 23:09
lol
Lily Romano
@Lilyheart
Dec 20 2016 23:09
Even though GitHub probably thinks I'm a Java dev just based on the total Java code I have there vs anything else.
Jonathan Herman
@lantech19446
Dec 20 2016 23:09
so on Chrome they're definitely squared off
developerguy50
@developerguy50
Dec 20 2016 23:10
Ohhhhh.....that's why companies list 2 or 3 languages the they want candidates to have experience in. I use to think "what, they want me to know Java, Css, Html, and Sql??" are they kidding?
What coding languages do you use mainly Lily?
Lily Romano
@Lilyheart
Dec 20 2016 23:12
Honestly, once you really know one language, it's much easier to pick up another. Especially if they are in the same family (e.g. Object Oriented, Function, etc.). Languages (especially high level) are so similar, it's just syntax changes (parens vs brackets vs indents, or semi colons vs no semi colons).
Depends on the time of year. If school is going Java. Otherwise webdev languages.
developerguy50
@developerguy50
Dec 20 2016 23:15
If I only knew Java, and was good with it, could I find work in "just Java" fields? Is there is such a thing? I know a guy in just c++ and been there for 15 years.
Lily Romano
@Lilyheart
Dec 20 2016 23:16
button {
    border-radius: 0;
}
@lantech19446 This would take the corners off ALL buttons (note the lack . No period targets all <button> elements. .button targets anything with class="button"
Jonathan Herman
@lantech19446
Dec 20 2016 23:16
I see stuff for java engineers and jave developers and the like but you still need to be competitive and also be able to interpret the code the java is going to interface with eventually
developerguy50
@developerguy50
Dec 20 2016 23:16
Ok
Jonathan Herman
@lantech19446
Dec 20 2016 23:17
@Lilyheart I thought I did that on the blue button because I know that's supposed to do it but I didn't even need it on the blue button and you were right when I opened it on chrome it was already squared off, think I'm gonna download a css reset and see what comes of it.
Lily Romano
@Lilyheart
Dec 20 2016 23:18
Just check the reset to make sure it does something to button. I know meyers doesn't.
Roie Gat
@roiegat_twitter
Dec 20 2016 23:18
Never really cared for Java....but companies still use it all the time
Lily Romano
@Lilyheart
Dec 20 2016 23:19
Really it's a step back kind of thing. Look at job descriptions for the type of work you really want. What languages do they have in common? Of those languages, what seems the most important based on wording? My suggestion would be to focus on that one. Really learn that one. Dabble in a few others when you need a break.
The signin button you have button class="button" but the others are just button class="google" and lucky. I would probably use the code I did above to reset ALL buttons to 0 radius, then style from there.
Jonathan Herman
@lantech19446
Dec 20 2016 23:22
apparently I depend on waaaay to much broswer specific stuff to begin with.
Roie Gat
@roiegat_twitter
Dec 20 2016 23:22
For a good basic though...learn bash scripting. Good uses for it in lots of corporate settings
Lily Romano
@Lilyheart
Dec 20 2016 23:22
common. I've learned to just start with something like a meyers reset and cross browser test a lot.
ooooh love bash
Jonathan Herman
@lantech19446
Dec 20 2016 23:22
actually I forgot the > so it was overriding my css
yea bash is kind of the thing wet dreams are made of.
Lily Romano
@Lilyheart
Dec 20 2016 23:23
:laughing:
Jonathan Herman
@lantech19446
Dec 20 2016 23:24
I just added button into the meyers reset, you're right though firefox is very odd with buttons
Lily Romano
@Lilyheart
Dec 20 2016 23:25
And it's an OS thing too. Buttons get weird on macs in general as well.
Jonathan Herman
@lantech19446
Dec 20 2016 23:28
fun fun
developerguy50
@developerguy50
Dec 20 2016 23:29
cool stuff
Lily Romano
@Lilyheart
Dec 20 2016 23:31
The input stuff. Buttons, radio buttons, input boxes. Pretty much have to explicitly state every style type you want. If you don't state something, odds are some browser/os combo will do something weird to it.
Roie Gat
@roiegat_twitter
Dec 20 2016 23:31
ok got the app loaded with lots of data points....will have to wait until day time to test fly it.
so now I can pay more attention to chat for 30 minutes
Jonathan Herman
@lantech19446
Dec 20 2016 23:32
I'll keep that in mind.
Lily Romano
@Lilyheart
Dec 20 2016 23:32
That's cool. You'll have to bring it to a meetup! Maybe the Wed 1/11 meetup :p
developerguy50
@developerguy50
Dec 20 2016 23:33

I should be able to make the next meetup in person...
Lily Romano
@Lilyheart
Dec 20 2016 23:34
@roiegat_twitter usually the Lower Providence Library. The 1/11 meetup is a little different as it's at North Wales and is a joint meetup with BuckMont OpenHacks.

Lily Romano
@Lilyheart
Dec 20 2016 23:50
The north wales library map. Both meetups will post about it very soon (just be sure to only RSVP on one!)
Roie Gat
@roiegat_twitter
Dec 20 2016 23:51
Gotcha. Not sure we can fly the drone inside the library....they tend to frown upon that. Familiar with the library though. Helped teach improv to high school kids there back in the day
Lily Romano
@Lilyheart
Dec 20 2016 23:51
No! But we could go out into the parking lot. lol @dcpking wanna chime in on that?

Roie Gat

parking lot would be ok...if it's well lit
Lily Romano
@Lilyheart
Dec 20 2016 23:52
Their usual meet ups? I know they are the same day as ours xD Thus why we are having a joint meetup. lol So @mhassell doesn't have to pick which to go to :p :laughing:
Jonathan Herman

Lily Romano
@Lilyheart
Dec 20 2016 23:54
They normally meet in.. um... somewhere in bucks.
Maybe Roie can answer on the where xD
The north wales thing is just cuz it's closer to both meetups and @dcpking was able to do the paperwork (and money) to get us in.
Roie Gat
@roiegat_twitter
Dec 20 2016 23:55
