Evening. What is everyone coding tonight?

Dec 27 2016 21:55
@Lilyheart re EGR 111: interesting that they concentrate on C++ (2 of 3 parts of the course) and RobotC for the other third. I would have expected three different languages for exposure to variety.

@dcpking I honestly didn't read past the link I sent. I see that there is another link on that page with details. Could just be due to length of time. Hard to get up to speed in multiple languages when you only meet a few hours a week xD
@lantech19446 that sucks. I hates headaches.

Dec 27 2016 21:58
@Lilyheart That's exactly my issue lol... I'll stare at my to-do list half the day and get to none of it because it's so daunting I don't know where to begin
Lily Romano
@Lilyheart
Dec 27 2016 21:59
bizarro mike.
xD I jus don't wanna. /tantrum.
@TScottM12 when that happens to me that means I have "projects" on the to do list, not to do items. i.e. Things need to be broken down further.

All else fails, eat the frog. Frog meaning the most horrible thing on the todo list. “Eat a live frog first thing in the morning and nothing worse will happen to you the rest of the day.” -Mark Twain
My frog right now is cleaning my desk xD I should do that during chat as I really don't wanna do anything else on the computer until my desk is cleaned up post-college finals

Dec 27 2016 22:36
hmmm.. detour first. The light that usually hides that I hacked a wifi controller onto doesn't seem to be connected.
xD Everything is off but the main computer and the house so four screens. Three on the PC and one on HAL9000. NORAD is what one of my previous teachers called my desk setup.
oh man. I really need to organize my nerd stuff better. I almost thought I lost my FTDI usb adapter. Not even sure if @dcpking could rescue me.

Here is a question. I use a 3 year old Dell laptop. I have a chance to get a 2010 MacBook in 17 inch but was wondering if this is a little to old and if I would have to worry about it being obsolete?? Anyone have any knowledge on this and is it better to develop on a Mac or a Pc?

Dec 27 2016 23:00
@developerguy50 I think more to the point would be why on earth you want an apple when you can put linux on a fairly new dell
nice setup @dcpking

Dec 27 2016 23:02
The left two are my own Linux machine that I'm learning on/developing on; the next three are an equally-sized Dell from Ford, and the far right is a surface that Microsoft gave me. I have to stop there because next comes the record dek, and the cables will only just stretch to my laptop as it is!
Jonathan Herman
@lantech19446
Dec 27 2016 23:02
system76 is great, honestly @developerguy50 go crapple if you're going to design but if you want to do development all the major industry players right now are linux native
Lily Romano
@Lilyheart
Dec 27 2016 23:02
IF you have a reason to learn the Mac OS and you already don't know it, it could be okay, but yeah... that's kinda old.
Some are mac OS to be fair.
Mike
@dcpking
Dec 27 2016 23:04
What do you want to do with your machine, @developerguy50 ? And will you be around at the library meetup tomorrow evening? 'cos I should be there with the System-76 I use, so you can see it

Jonathan Herman

Dec 27 2016 23:05
@Lilyheart I think I'd prefer an older mac if it weren't for the whole panned obscillescense thing. My friend does design on his 6,000 dollar macbook and it freezes constantly he never had a problem with his last few he said he's going linux as soon as he's out from under this one
developerguy50

I'm a photographer and would like to build a website from scratch. I think what I have from Walmart may be okay to use for now.
Mike
@dcpking
Dec 27 2016 23:06
So long as you get a machine with desktop components and not laptop components then that'll be fine - it'll play you Disney movies to get you to sleep while keeping you warm enough not to need a sleeping bag :)

What compiler do I need to use JavaScript? I've been focusing on Python but see that I'll need some front end shortly after.

none
browser renders directly

Lily Romano
@Lilyheart
Dec 27 2016 23:14
what browser are you using?
developerguy50
@developerguy50
Dec 27 2016 23:14
explorer
Microsoft edge
Lily Romano
@Lilyheart
Dec 27 2016 23:15
right click on the page and hit inspect (it's on explorer anyway, i don't have edge)
A thing will pop up on the page and there should be "tabs" across the top. Click console.
developerguy50
@developerguy50
Dec 27 2016 23:17
no options like that...I did try my chrome browser and it says inspect
Lily Romano
@Lilyheart
Dec 27 2016 23:17
lemme know when you have it or if you have any issues. my roommate has edge and I can see where things are.
stick with chrome xD
same thing there tho. inspect, then console.
developerguy50
@developerguy50
Dec 27 2016 23:19
I'm at the console screen. I see lots of failed errors. I'll ignore them
Lily Romano
@Lilyheart
Dec 27 2016 23:19
type alert("Hello world");
and then press enter
Mike
@dcpking
Dec 27 2016 23:19
That's the code. Put it into a file called hw.html and then double-click that. The rest of the file might be:
Lily Romano
@Lilyheart
Dec 27 2016 23:20
no mike xD you can do it in the console.
he wanted a short program!

developerguy50

Dec 27 2016 23:22
I see
Lily Romano
@Lilyheart
Dec 27 2016 23:22
not in the console log xD try it!
developerguy50
@developerguy50
Dec 27 2016 23:22
is there a run button?
Lily Romano
@Lilyheart
Dec 27 2016 23:22
just hit enter!
and there will be a popup.
developerguy50
@developerguy50
Dec 27 2016 23:23
woah nelly...it worked!
will this damage my operating system making programs this way?
is there something I should use longterm or no?
Lily Romano
@Lilyheart
Dec 27 2016 23:23
a lot of JavaScript you can test in the console. but it's really just for single line super easy code.
developerguy50
@developerguy50
Dec 27 2016 23:24
JavaScript easier to grasp than Java?
Mike
@dcpking
Dec 27 2016 23:24
What browser are you using that has a console, @Lilyheart ?
developerguy50
@developerguy50
Dec 27 2016 23:24
chrome
Mike
@dcpking
Dec 27 2016 23:24
Ah
Lily Romano
@Lilyheart
Dec 27 2016 23:24
yes and no. JavaScript is easier... BUT! You have to use javascript with HTML and CSS so you have to learn three bits.
I recommend going here https://www.freecodecamp.com/map
You need to learn some HTML first. Then some CSS. Then you can start in on JavaScript.
You need all three to make your website.
developerguy50
@developerguy50
Dec 27 2016 23:25
That's why companies have all three listed on job offers.
Lily Romano
@Lilyheart
Dec 27 2016 23:25
/nod
none of them are worth anything without the other two.
@dcpking almost all browsers have a console.
developerguy50
@developerguy50
Dec 27 2016 23:26
Ahhhh!!! Nobody told me that and I was taking Java lessons from a teacher for a few months. Never knew, although it was Java. So, backend stuff can stand alone kind of?
Lily Romano
@Lilyheart
Dec 27 2016 23:26
blob
Java is to JavaScript like Car is to Carpet like Ham is to Hamsters.
developerguy50
@developerguy50
Dec 27 2016 23:27
I see, very understandable
Lily Romano
@Lilyheart
Dec 27 2016 23:27
Knowing any language will help with learning other languages tho.
I learn Java during the school semesters and web stuff on the down time.
Mike
@dcpking
Dec 27 2016 23:29
I knew Chrome did, @Lilyheart , but Edge seems not to - I was trying to use that as @developerguy50 was using Win 10
developerguy50
@developerguy50
Dec 27 2016 23:29
So I should go to code academy and learn Html
How long (know prior coding experience) will it take to learn Html?
Lily Romano
@Lilyheart
Dec 27 2016 23:29
developerguy50
@developerguy50
Dec 27 2016 23:29
ok
Lily Romano
@Lilyheart
Dec 27 2016 23:29
code academy if free code camp doesn't match your style.
HTML is very simple. CSS is not as simple. JS is really not simple.
If you are talking about how long to really learn all three? Forever and a day. If you want to know how long before you can make something small but cool. Not long at all.
Look at that map I linked.
You start making a website about 15 hours into learning.
developerguy50
@developerguy50
Dec 27 2016 23:31
I started with code academy Css but jumped into Java. I use a 5 hour video I paid $70 for.
Ok
Mike
@dcpking
Dec 27 2016 23:32
What did you think of Colt's UDemy course, @Lilyheart ? Too much for a beginner?
Lily Romano
@Lilyheart
Dec 27 2016 23:32
Yeah. Too much for brand new to HTML/CSS beginner anyway. After FCC Basic Javascript maybe.
developerguy50
@developerguy50
Dec 27 2016 23:33
If I can make a kickbutt website, I might get employed. Photography has it's ups and downs as well. Measuring light and getting proper exsposures can be tricky.
Lily Romano
@Lilyheart
Dec 27 2016 23:33
My roommate does photography. Well, did. Had his own darkroom etc.
developerguy50
@developerguy50
Dec 27 2016 23:34
SO 2 months to grasp it? Can how long before I can dabble in all 3 front end languages?
Lily Romano
@Lilyheart
Dec 27 2016 23:34
dabble? 20-30 hours of study?
@dcpking that course is full price right now xD I can only recommend it when udemy has a sale :p
developerguy50
@developerguy50
Dec 27 2016 23:35
Your opinion - how much time per day do you think I should spend per day?
ignore the second "per day"
Lily Romano
@Lilyheart
Dec 27 2016 23:36
that is a very personal decision. Really depends on you. Some people can learn going hard for 20 hours at a time ( @SimplyPhy heh) Some need to learn in short bits and play around with lots of breaks.
Eric Phy
@SimplyPhy
Dec 27 2016 23:38
You rangggg :)

@Lilyheart
Dec 27 2016 23:38

@SimplyPhy
Dec 27 2016 23:38
I should :P
Lily Romano
@Lilyheart
Dec 27 2016 23:39
How many hours a day did you study? I know you went really HARD at it tho. Phy to the extreme.
developerguy50
@developerguy50
Dec 27 2016 23:39
I have 5 hours a day to spend in between work and personal life.
Code Academy lets you type code onto the website but for my on use, do I need a compiler for those 3 front ends you spoke of?
Eric Phy
@SimplyPhy
Dec 27 2016 23:41
Yeah the summer it was about 10 hours/day, since I would take a 3 hour break midday for exercise/food, then weekends were like 6/hr a day average
Mike
@dcpking
Dec 27 2016 23:41
Lots of time then :) Try to study a few hours on a topic in the FCC and then actually put it into a page or two. Then maybe relax a little and give it a quick once-over before quitting. And no, you don't need a compiler at all - they're all interpreted, by the code in the browser
Eric Phy
@SimplyPhy
Dec 27 2016 23:42
Actually I go harder now ☠️
I was doing 90-97 hour weeks my first 3 weeks at this job
developerguy50
@developerguy50
Dec 27 2016 23:42
Go hard or go home (football)
Eric Phy
@SimplyPhy
Dec 27 2016 23:43
But now it's like 60/week, so a lot better
Lily Romano
@Lilyheart
Dec 27 2016 23:43
@developerguy50 no compiler. I recommend starting FCC and if you have any questions, holler here. It should answer all of your basic questions tho.
developerguy50
@developerguy50
Dec 27 2016 23:43
Woah!!
FCC??
Mike
@dcpking
Dec 27 2016 23:43

My bachelors is in broadcasting,mass media, ...I'm an idiot
Mike
@dcpking
Dec 27 2016 23:45

He's in IT as well xD

Dec 27 2016 23:46
My Dell Laptop is good enough to one day build real world applications or do I need an upgrade for sure?
Eric Phy
@SimplyPhy
Dec 27 2016 23:46
you can build on whatevers
Lily Romano
@Lilyheart
Dec 27 2016 23:46
you can code on a piece of junk with notepad.

Eric Phy
@SimplyPhy
Dec 27 2016 23:46
awww, nice to be on gitter and not slack
Mike
@dcpking
Dec 27 2016 23:47
Good enough, very likely - it's all little text files. The heavy lifting comes when you start throwing video around, but then you get someone else's machine to do that for you
Lily Romano
@Lilyheart
Dec 27 2016 23:47
you left us xD We've always been here :p
Eric Phy
@SimplyPhy
Dec 27 2016 23:47
i left everyone
those first three weeks were all absorbing
Lily Romano
@Lilyheart
Dec 27 2016 23:47
debugging web code isn't like debugging java. No compiler errors! They are all run time... meaning in the browser xD
Eric Phy
@SimplyPhy
Dec 27 2016 23:47
and the job hunt was really intense too
