@gpsims When I work with several variables that need to become a sentence, I write out the full sentence first
e.g. result = "The big dog ran quickly home."; Then I go in and replace each actual word with a variable. So like the first one coming in is myNoun so
e.g. result = "The big " + myNoun + " ran quickly home."; And I just build from there making sure to keep spaces intact.

not very syracuse and one other university were clients of my fathers but 2yrs ago I drove out to tonawanda and stayed in one of the neighboring towns for a friends wedding and had no desire to drive through nyc so i went up through binghamton and then took the main highway all the way across the state
Michael Perry
@keepsabbathholy_twitter
Jan 03 2017 22:27
Good idea, it's a much more relaxing route
You hopped off of I-81 in Binghamton and got on I-88 for a while, correct?
Or did you stay on 81?
Jonathan Herman
@lantech19446
Jan 03 2017 22:29

Reminder! "Hello fellow MontCoders! 2016 has been an interesting year for the group! The group officially kicked off May 17th. Since then, we have has 31 weekly online chats, 13 meetups, and 2 lectures! We've posted nearly 14,000 messages in the chat room!

I am looking for ways to make 2017 even better than 2016. But, to do this I need to know what you want! I’ve created a survey to gather this information. If you could please just take a few minutes of your time it would be greatly appreciated. None of the fields are required and you can skip any fields you wish. However! If you complete every field (but the last one, you'll see it) your name will be entered into a hat. On the January 11th meetup, I will pull for a prize basket! I am still gathering more prizes but at this time we have stickers, an Arduino pro mini, and a gift card!"

Thank you to those who have already responded!

I plan on bringing @MontBot to the 1/11 meetup. It was mostly built during one of the last meetups. lol

I only know enough C to make arduino code do what I need it to xD
web dev and Java as MCCC uses Java in most of their classes where I am a student.

I don't know, maybe you should send him a babka along with the message. Y'know, just to smooth things over.
I know I'd love to get a babka in the mail

Anyone have any experience with NES programming, per chance? It's something I've always wanted to explore, but I can't find any decent documentation. All I've got so far is a sprite that I can move across the screen.
gpsims
@gpsims
Jan 03 2017 22:46
@Lilyheart on that sentence, where do i need quotations around each variable?
Lily Romano
@Lilyheart
Jan 03 2017 22:49
@gpsims variables don't need quotes, but any string literals do. So if the test sentence would end up being The big dog ran quickly home. and {big, dog, ran, quickly} are words that change, then {The, home.}(and the spaces between words) are strings that you want literally in every output. The non changing parts need "
gpsims
@gpsims
Jan 03 2017 22:51
ok
Lily Romano
@Lilyheart
Jan 03 2017 22:51
Here is how you solved the Constructing Strings with Variables challenge if that helps to go back and see what you did.
Michael Perry
@keepsabbathholy_twitter
Jan 03 2017 22:54
@gpsims Is something like this what you're attempting?: "The" + varNoun + varVerb + varAdjective + "home.";
gpsims
@gpsims
Jan 03 2017 22:54
yes
this is what i have
Michael Perry
@keepsabbathholy_twitter
Jan 03 2017 22:55
@gpsims like @Lilyheart said - whatever needs to change goes into a variable, and whatever doesn't need to change goes in " "
Lily Romano
@Lilyheart
Jan 03 2017 22:55
Just remember to watch your spaces! Here is the challenge Michael.
gpsims
@gpsims
Jan 03 2017 22:55
result= "The " + myAdjective + myNoun + myVerb + myAdverb + " home.";
Lily Romano
@Lilyheart
Jan 03 2017 22:56
The bigdogranquickly home.
Michael Perry
@keepsabbathholy_twitter
Jan 03 2017 22:56
Yeah you have to add spaces
So like "The " + var + " " + anotherVar, etc.
Lily Romano
@Lilyheart
Jan 03 2017 22:58
So I start with result = "The big dog ran quickly home."; Then I delete the letters big and replace with " + myAdjective + " then replace the letters dog with " + myNoun + " etc. Then you know the spaces will stick.
Michael Perry
@keepsabbathholy_twitter
Jan 03 2017 22:59
That's a good idea @Lilyheart. I'd go with that @gpsims. That way you know the formatting won't be goofed in the end.
gpsims
@gpsims
Jan 03 2017 23:00
ok retyping it now
Lily Romano
@Lilyheart
Jan 03 2017 23:13
@gpsims On this page you can find the challenge and see how I solved it if that helps.
gpsims
@gpsims
Jan 03 2017 23:15
thank you, i had my quotes all screwed up
Lily Romano
@Lilyheart
Jan 03 2017 23:25
@gpsims if you come to a meetup, remind me, and I'll show you how I actually type it in so I know my quotes don't get all wonky. It's hard to explain over text xD
gpsims

So is jQuery really outdated now or what?
Everyone's telling me to not bother with it anymore
Lily Romano
@Lilyheart
Jan 03 2017 23:55
From what I understand... jQuery was created to help cover some holes in basic JavaScript. It helped with cross-browser implementation and in general made things easier. As vanilla JavaScript has evolved, it has fixed many of these issues making jQuery unnecessary in many ways. It's more about using the right tool for the job and now, many times, jQuery is no longer that tool and it's just unnecessary bloat because vanilla can now serve as many of the same functions (ha, joke).
@davidjcastner may have an opinion on that if he's around.
Michael Perry
@keepsabbathholy_twitter
Jan 03 2017 23:59
So I'm guessing this is a point of contention for many people?
