Browsing nonsense in the dark xD
What’s up?
Matt Richards
@mattjrichards
Jan 26 2017 03:08
I'm trying to figure out why when I make changes in my main.css file they don't reflect in the browser. I'm using Atom with Chrome and LiveReload.
Some changes work, but others don't.
Lily Romano
@Lilyheart
Jan 26 2017 03:08
what isn’t?
@davidjcastner you ever use livereload?
Matt Richards
@mattjrichards
Jan 26 2017 03:09
I don't think it's the LiveReload. I think it might have something to do with the links I have in the <head> in my html.
Lily Romano
@Lilyheart
Jan 26 2017 03:11
You want to put some of the snippet code here you think is the issue? To put code up type three backticks (grave symbol found on the key with the ~ ) then hit shift enter, put it the code, shift enter again and three more backticks. Put it in an easier to read code block.
Matt Richards
@mattjrichards
Jan 26 2017 03:12
ok
<!DOCTYPE html>

Then I have this at the bottom of my html.

Jan 26 2017 03:19
h1 {
  color: green;
  font-size:4.0em;
  padding:0px;
  margin-top:0px;
I can change the padding and it works. But if I try to change the color or the font size it doesn't reflect the changes.
Lily Romano

Is the code being over written by something else? You wanna just stick the code in a dummy codepen file and i’ll grab it and you can delete the pen?
I was just trying to mock up some stuff with your code but the actual code might work better.
Matt Richards
@mattjrichards
Jan 26 2017 03:23
It works in Codepen, but when I copy and paste the code from Codepen into Atom it doesn't work right. Although, in Codepen I don't have those Bootstrap links in the head. I'll copy and paste exactly what I have in Atom into Codepen. Gimmee a minute.
Lily Romano
@Lilyheart
Jan 26 2017 03:24
coolie. then i’ll steal the code and make it local. easy code transferrance xD

Matt Richards

Jan 26 2017 03:28
It's doing the same thing in Codepen. I think it may be the Bootstrap links.
Lily Romano
@Lilyheart
Jan 26 2017 03:29
got i think, not tested.
in your code, move your stylesheet link to main.css to after bootstrap
you are loading bootstrap after and it’s overwriting.

If you inspect the element you can see the load order. i changed the color to white xD you can see the white crossed out and bootstrap above it.

Yes!!! You are so awesome!
Lily Romano
@Lilyheart
Jan 26 2017 03:30

when i’m awake tomorrow i can tell you how to load bootstrap onto codepen unless David wants to take over xD. Typing in bed in awkward lol

@Lilyheart Thank you. Awesome. You'll have to show me how you did that.

@Lilyheart
Jan 26 2017 03:33
right click the part misbehaving and select inspect
David Castner
@davidjcastner
Jan 26 2017 03:33

css that is declared is after other css takes priority provided the selectors are the same. for example:

h1 {
    color: green;
}

h1 {
    color: red;
}

in this example h1 will take the color red. Because you loaded Bootstraps css after your css, the bootstrap took priority

Matt Richards
@mattjrichards
Jan 26 2017 03:35
So it matters in what order you put stuff in your html
David Castner
@davidjcastner
Jan 26 2017 03:36
correct, especially loading other sources like css and javascript

David Castner

Jan 26 2017 03:37
That's why javascript files are put at the bottom of the body tag; lots of javascript depends on elements already being part of the DOM to function properly. Otherwise the script will look at the DOM and not find the element.

@kilocycle I recommend looking at a short tutorial about the chrome debugger tool, it will help you greatly. I believe freeCodeCamp has one.
But you can always loo for a video which might give you a better idea of how to use it

Jan 26 2017 03:41
Yes there is a section on freeCodeCamp called chrome developer tools (you can find it in the map), I would recommend going and doing as much of that, don;t worry that you're not doing challenges in order
feel free to tag me if you have any other questions, I'll probably be up for a little

Jan 26 2017 03:42
@Lilyheart @davidjcastner Thanks again. I'm going to get back to learning this stuff. I'm usually up pretty late at night into the morning.
David Castner
@davidjcastner
Jan 26 2017 03:48
no problem that's what we're here for! oh btw for code pen, codepen takes all the html in the editor and inserts it into the body tag, so there is no need to add the doctype, html, head, or body tags. If you need to insert stuff into the head tag or want to add things like bootstrap, you add them in the settings. See screenshots below

@Lilyheart or anyone else that uses uncrustify/atom-beautifier, I am having trouble with indentation after java lambda expressions. I posted the issue on stackoverflow, but I thought I would ask here since I'm not getting any answers. http://stackoverflow.com/questions/41868364/how-to-indent-properly-after-java-lambda-expression-with-uncrustify-formatter
Lily Romano
@Lilyheart
Jan 26 2017 21:54
Never lambda'd my java to date. Curious though.
I use atom-beautify. Let me see if it handles it any better.

Are you having a problem with it? or? Not sure what you are asking.
denisemathis
@denisemathis
Jan 26 2017 22:11
Yes, it is not sending the contact info on the website to my email. However, when I use PHP without bootstrap it works. Not sure what I am doing wrong.

Lily Romano
@Lilyheart
Jan 26 2017 22:22
Sorry, it's not enough information/code to go by. I don't know what you mean by "outside of my bootstrap website" or what code is different. Bootstrap is a library that is used to make pages easier/mobile/etc. Are you using a theme on something that said it was a bootstrap theme?
Hey Matt. How goes the coding?
Matt Richards

@davidjcastner the other atom package does the same thing but I've been actively working to try to fix it. No news yet.

What type of coding do you prefer @kewolf ?
@davidjcastner at some point can you send me your uncrustify cfg file?
kewolf
@kewolf
Jan 26 2017 22:37
@Lilyheart I am in the process of trying to figure that out :) I have done a bunch of the more traditional stuff from school (C/C++/Java), but am now getting into web dev, which I am really enjoying. I am hoping to finish my dissertation soon and work in industry, but I don't know what sort of job I would really enjoy.
Lily Romano
@Lilyheart
Jan 26 2017 22:39
I can understand that! I'm not sure what direction I want to go either so I do Java during school (I'm 1/2 to my associates at the moment) and web dev on breaks.
kewolf
@kewolf
Jan 26 2017 22:42
Nice! I was hoping to get some advice on which framework I should use for the web application I am building as the final part of my dissertation. Any suggestions?
Lily Romano
@Lilyheart
Jan 26 2017 22:45
@davidjcastner has spent more time in frameworks. I tend to focus on vanilla code to understand the underlying bits and bobs. David will see my tag here when he's out of class. What are you looking to do? needs? etc?
kewolf
@kewolf
Jan 26 2017 22:47
I want to create an interface that allows people to access their Twitter data and create custom audio notifications for the different people that they follow.

That sounds like an interesting project. I look forward to seeing if David has any suggestions.
kewolf

Jan 26 2017 22:51
I have created a prototype version in Java, but want to make a version that looks really clean and is easier to distribute. Plus learning new stuff is fun :)
What are you working on?
David Castner
@davidjcastner
Jan 26 2017 23:11
@Lilyheart I can send you my cfg file during my break
@kewolf Welcome! I'll try to answer questions during the break of my class. But I'll be home later to answer anything else
Lily Romano
@Lilyheart
Jan 26 2017 23:13
@davidjcastner thanks. Once I have that I should be able to hit onto it pretty quickly. The settings I have are not doing it but I use very little of the settings :/
Lily Romano

Jan 26 2017 23:22
@kewolf Sorry I'm not very chatty. I'm in super debug mode @ _@. HA! Taking a computer organization and architecture class this semester although class just started. Last class we built logic gates but in software form.
Haven't heard from @lantech19446 in awhile. Everything okay over there?
kewolf
@kewolf
Jan 26 2017 23:25
No problem! That was my least favorite class!! I had a really crummy professor who would always go off on tangents... logic gates are fun! I am waiting for some matlab code to run (doing some analysis of log data from I collected from people using an interface I built), and reading about random web dev stuff.

MontCode has a member with a math PhD, i know he uses MatLab but I don't know much about it (he doesn't come in chat much, comes to the in-persons).
@lantech19446 I didn't see any messages from you, but gitter's network has been flaky recently. Came back up pretty solid late this morning.

this was in the last hour or so I said hey everyone and it came up pink for some reason then I asked why the message was pink lol

Jan 26 2017 23:31
With this the first Thursday for chat, I wasn't sure what was goin' on xD
@kewolf I'm not sure how you navigated academia for as long as you have. :laughing: I find it frustrating.
I've put a pause on debugging until I get that config file. Now I have to email a few professors to try to get recommendation letters. Blargh
