Is this a Philly specific room?
Lily Romano
@Lilyheart

Not philly specific at all. Most of us are in the Montgomery County area as MontCode is Montgomery County based.
We have a few members from the surrounding counties.

how does the online code thing work? never done that before

I just recently started the free code camp. It's been bite size exercises stepping through I this case html. I have done a few online things, but so far find this really helpful as they have an emulator as you code that is being updated. I am intrested to see how it continues. One of the big things I have struggled with is accountability / group to join which is why I was glad there is this MontCo group that I am hoping to meet soon!
I should add that one of my big challenges with online stuff is having a project to apply learned skills to which I am hoping the free code camp structure helps out a bit with.

Is anyone else here ?
Lily Romano

Mar 09 2017 21:52
@brindlebrew the freecodecamp curriculum will have you start doing some projects pretty soon I remember it's before JavaScript so it shouldn't be too far now

Mar 09 2017 22:09
I'm here @pmagunia! Lol
@Lilyheart that is good to know. I am / was doing the Flatiron prep class that is free but again, learned some great info but don't have a project per se. Also glad that freecodecamp builds on skills. Flatiron jumped in at JS.

Personally I am intrested in going into data engineering direction to improve analytical capabilities / empower that work and make it easier and more approachable which is also where a lack of knowing where to get started has a challenging component. Initially when I was all about learning a new skill set it was the actual analytics peice but started realizing that the pipeline and moving information was highly interesting.

@brindlebrew sounds like something that might be math heavy or atleast something that strong math would assist in. I hear khan academy has some great math courses if you need it.

hello all
so it seems random when people comment but I'd like to share that I am using a variety of programs online to learn so far i've used Freecodecamp/ The odin project/ Teamtreehouse/ and codeacademy

Hi Massimo. It's like I said in the Facebook message. Also, the chat is for those who need a set time each week to reserve for practicing their coding at home so people may be coding and not chatting.

Mar 09 2017 22:36
yup you did mention that, that's fine i did want to gauge how it was.. so where are you at on your coding journey?
Lily Romano
@Lilyheart
Mar 09 2017 22:38
Depends on the season :p spring and fall I am a full time student.
This semester it's assembly language on the arduino

oh wow never heard of it, just looked up a vid clip, interesting stuff

It's okay. I prefer the higher level stuff.

Mar 09 2017 22:45
I do some non-development freelancing online and learning in between that. I've completed over half of the teamtreehouse front-end development track i'm about to jump into object-oriented-programming there and on fcc as well.
Bryon Martinez
@brindlebrew
Mar 09 2017 22:46
@mavas85 do you have one you like best for resources or find most helpful?
Lily Romano
@Lilyheart
Mar 09 2017 22:46
fcc might just end up being a mirror the knowledge on treehouse. Not necessarily a bad thing, I like to take a few different courses on the same language or concept to get a different take but you might find something different.
Bryon Martinez
@brindlebrew
Mar 09 2017 22:47
@Lilyheart thanks! Yeah the math part is heavy and I have hit up Khan when I revisit something / do something new. I find it to be a good source.

I'm ideally looking for a jr. front-end role, or ux design position afterwards and have begun styling a portfolio towards those goals, what are some of your goals?
Lily Romano
@Lilyheart
Mar 09 2017 22:50
I think @SimplyPhy is doing some ux work now. He's been too busy for us mortals lately tho :p <3
Bryon Martinez
@brindlebrew
Mar 09 2017 22:51
I'm looking more data engineering / I guess backend. Still figuring how to get there. Spent last year spinning my gears a bit. Trying to buckle down and make some real progress this year. Ideally I would move into this type of role in my current position as we have need / no solution! Haha
Lily Romano
@Lilyheart
Mar 09 2017 22:52
fcc has the data vis section but I"m not sure if it's quite the direction you want.
edx.org has some data related courses as well.
mavas85
@mavas85
Mar 09 2017 22:54
@brindlebrew it's like lily stated, it is a good idea to have several resources, because there are many aspects that may be covered in one platform versus another one. I was going to suggest edx, coursera, or MITcourseware for that I'm sure youd find something related
Bryon Martinez
@brindlebrew
Mar 09 2017 22:57
I agree with both. I like edx. Coursera has been hit or miss for me. I also use packt
Been thinking about their mapt component!
I have had good success with MSN as well. The problem for me now is the multiple classes I have worked through feel repetitive with no direction!

Mar 09 2017 22:59
When I find myself spinning, and it's easy because there is SO MUCH out there now, I make a list of all the course I want to take. Actually, I have a binder LOL. Then I focus on one or two and new courses go into the binder.
One page per course. Also means I can see if I'm taking the "same" course over and over. And by that I mean different courses but the same info.
Bryon Martinez
@brindlebrew
Mar 09 2017 23:02
I like that idea - I agree that the spinning thing happens very easily and ends up being one of the two major hurdles!
and it does come from the overload of information!
What I really hope to find / make is a solid learning plan that covers pertinent information with ability for deeper learning as I go.
and of course with info overload is the feeling of needing to learn it all NOW.. so that is a challenge as well!
Lily Romano
@Lilyheart
Mar 09 2017 23:12
I can feel that pain! s'why I started my binder even though it might seem like organization overkill. Help to organize all the "stuff" out there. Doesn't help I really only get the summer to focus on it as fall and spring is 100% academic and not all the fun online classes xD I start to feel like I'm getting behind on all the new stuff coming out online.
Bryon Martinez
@brindlebrew
Mar 09 2017 23:14
hahaha I hear you! I feel like everyday I started WAY to late learning this stuff. and I only get to spend a few hours a night working on it!
I cant seem to keep up with the new technologies... and it doesnt help that part of my personality is to explore shiny new things...lol!
Lily Romano
@Lilyheart
Mar 09 2017 23:16

If it's successful for at least a month, I'll share the strategy. We spoke of time management and focus/productivity strats before, so maybe I'll have one that does the trick [for me]
Bryon Martinez
@brindlebrew
Mar 09 2017 23:23
haha from what I gather its one of the biggest problems!
Lily Romano
@Lilyheart
Mar 09 2017 23:23
You doin' UX these days?
Bryon Martinez
@brindlebrew
Mar 09 2017 23:24
that would be great - it would be interesting to see what others thought are in general on learning time management strategies!
Eric Phy
@SimplyPhy
Mar 09 2017 23:25
Mostly UI and some data analysis. The UX is mostly implicit for now, not really programmatic. So like concept stage UX, but until the platform has its lifeblood (users) flowing, the UX will be supplemental, albeit necessary
mavas85
@mavas85
Mar 09 2017 23:25
I use the treehouse front-end curriculum as guide and cross off or write notes next to what I have yet to grasp.. also I have a couple of monster hybrid projects some half-way complete that showcases a skill even if it's not on an expert level. I find this helps because I can always go back to it and upgrade it, and te project itself works as a documentation or portfolio piece
Eric Phy
@SimplyPhy
Mar 09 2017 23:25
Anyways I have to disappear again :(. Until soon!

@SimplyPhy how you want to present info if you wanna do something formal just lemme know Eric. Meetup streaming whatever.

@brindlebrew
Mar 09 2017 23:28
@mavas85 I like that - I think that is what I am hoping to fcc will help out with some - and thent he mapt as well.a
It helps that I am getting a bit more focused - still spinning with possibility.
I also need to find / have not yet found a project that catches my fancy so am still stuck in this class loop of learning a class and moving on. not applying learned components of the skill.
Lily Romano
@Lilyheart
Mar 09 2017 23:30
That's usually what I recommend for people who want some web development direction.
Bryon Martinez
@brindlebrew
Mar 09 2017 23:31
yeah - unfortunately the data engineering direction is somewhat quite from what I have found
so I am hoping that the backend web development will help there
Lily Romano
@Lilyheart
Mar 09 2017 23:32
What is your math, academic background?
mavas85
@mavas85
Mar 09 2017 23:33
the odinproject has a fullstack curriculum you can look at with extensive links and details, but its very open so not entirely structured or handholding. Treehouse also has tracks of backend languages like Ruby js stack
Bryon Martinez
@brindlebrew
Mar 09 2017 23:34
bs in biotechnology
I actually do biopharma process development
Lily Romano
@Lilyheart
Mar 09 2017 23:34
So you have some math already xD
Bryon Martinez
@brindlebrew

so decent with math - though tested out of much of it in college (seemed like a good idea at the time)

Look up Khan's stuff if you want more.
It goes pretty far.
Bryon Martinez

yeah - I am a fan of Khan
and they explain it well which is nice!
@mavas85 Ill have to check out the odinproject
