Hey all, I'm new to this group, but want to ask - has anyone here gone to PTW before? If so, what'd you think of it? I'm thinking of going to the dev day but was curious as to whether or not it's worth it

I haven't been to Philly Tech Week but I do know several people who have. They are interested in the education of the tech side of things and they are all for PTW.
@G7470 if you decide to go, you could report back to us and let us know how it went!
Someday it will be during a week where things are not super crazy. There are two crazy weeks of the year, and it's during the spring crazies.

Hmmm, sounds interesting. I thought it would be neat to go, but I didn't want to go if people didn't think it was worth it. Yeah, it seems like it's during a busy time (it is for me too) but I think I'd be able to make it to dev day (Wednesday)
If I do end up going, I will certainly report back!

Awesome! I look forward to it.

One professor even mentioned it last semester even though it would be months away. That puts the vote pretty high in my book.

I work at a University, and nobody (not even professors here) had any comment on it, hence my curiosity. That's a good sign though.

At MCCC two professors I can think of off the top of my head are very pro PTW
What university?

You just joined the Facebook group today? I saw someone join that’s from that area.

I've been around the area several times . I haven't lived there at all though, haha

trying to learn COBOL and Python now..
Lily Romano
@Lilyheart
Apr 27 2017 16:24
Hi @IanN1967 . We have a few people that know some levels of python but I think you might be our first COBOL learner!
G7470
@G7470
Apr 27 2017 17:17
I know how to read COBOL - writing it is a different story
Lily Romano
@Lilyheart
Apr 27 2017 17:23
:laughing: i don't know anything 'bout it
G7470
@G7470
Apr 27 2017 17:24
As far as I know, most places now don't write with COBOL - it's an outdated language. It still lingers where I work, but we don't write any COBOL - we just have to trace through them sometimes to figure out what's going on

anyone doing any fun coding tonight? Not I sadly. Crunch time for school

Was going through some JavaScript stuff on freecodecamp earlier - needed a refresher before diving into typescript haha
Lily Romano
@Lilyheart
Apr 27 2017 21:07
i haven't learned typescript but i know a bit of its background. sounds like it's a bit better than javascript

Hi all.
G7470
@G7470
Apr 27 2017 21:09
That's my understanding too. It's based off of JavaScript too, so having aJavaScript knowledge helps
Hey @IanN1967

My stated interest in COBOL is that lots of legacy systems still use it. Apparently there are many jobs to be had maintaining these.

Hi all
Lily Romano
@Lilyheart
Apr 27 2017 21:11
there will always be a need for legacy system knowledge. But may have to travel to find it!
Hey Caryn

Seem to be lots of online COBOL jobs. Plus I'm interested in building skills that I can work with anywhere in world

@ccziriak
Apr 27 2017 21:12
COBOL - it's been years since i used that
IanN1967
@IanN1967
Apr 27 2017 21:12
So far COBOL seems easy.
easier than Python, which I'm also studying
ccz
@ccziriak
Apr 27 2017 21:12
yeah - wasn't too hard to learn that I can remember
G7470
@G7470
Apr 27 2017 21:12
I forget if it's COBOL or SQR that you have to worry about indentation
ccz
@ccziriak
Apr 27 2017 21:13
i heard somewhere that there are still multitudes of lines of COBOL code still being used
IanN1967
@IanN1967
Apr 27 2017 21:13
some indenting in COBOL - IF ESLE statements
yes- heard 80% of code in world is still COBOL
G7470
@G7470
Apr 27 2017 21:14
There's some being used where I work - hence my knowledge of it

I'm working on school projects tonight a class portfolio and a professional portfolio website
IanN1967
@IanN1967

Apr 27 2017 21:16
That's a great mindset to have @IanN1967 - it'll take you places
What kind of portfolio @ccziriak? Like photography, or like a software developer portfolio?
ccz
@ccziriak
Apr 27 2017 21:18
designer/developer portfoilo

@G7470

I'd keep that handy after you make it haha

@ccziriak
Apr 27 2017 21:19
right now i'm considering doing a js slide show that also changes the content on a page under each image to go with it, for a storyboard i'm including on my portfolio site
Lily Romano

Apr 27 2017 21:19

Sounds professional- I like it!
ccz
@ccziriak
Apr 27 2017 21:20
I hope I can figure out how to do it - I've seen some examples that use captions but not the whole page content
IanN1967
@IanN1967
Apr 27 2017 21:21
Perhaps arrange things so user can control content by clicking on specific parts of image?
ccz
@ccziriak
Apr 27 2017 21:22
hmm - I hadn't been thinking that way - something to consider
G7470
@G7470
Apr 27 2017 21:22
Maybe use something like ajax to make calls to get your data, and then use that to manipulate your content on the fly. Basically your whole page content you can consider as the "caption"
Set it all up on a timer
ccz
@ccziriak
Apr 27 2017 21:23
I was thinking more sequential with next and previous links and a content line underneath
G7470
@G7470
Apr 27 2017 21:24
That could work too
ccz
@ccziriak
Apr 27 2017 21:24
I think I'll leave out a timer and let the user control the nav - but yeah ajax would be a good idea
G7470
@G7470
Apr 27 2017 21:26
I like ajax because you can separate your data retrieval logic from the "view" of the page to keep it cleaner and easier to follow
You know, sometimes it would be nice to be able to have ideas flowing like this at work. There are times that I get asked about something, and I give them a blank stare, lol
Lily Romano
@Lilyheart
Apr 27 2017 21:29
I dread getting “the stare"
ccz
@ccziriak
Apr 27 2017 21:29
I'm familiar with the blank stare

Adam, do you remember when PTW dev day is off the top of your head? I know if I go look for it, I'll get stuck in a rabbit hole of looking at all the PTW stuff xD

Every time I start to write something, I think the food delivery guy is pulling up and I walk to the door.
This amuses me.

samesies. I have three final papers in three different classes this semester.
Today I've spent wrapping up everything not paper related so I can focus fri/sat/sun.
Just waiting for food to arrive so I can start an online quiz...

Anyone know of any fun events going on over the summer?
Although with my luck, they will be during the 6 weeks I'll be out of town :/
Lilyheart @Lilyheart sees that @SimplyPhy RSVP'd for saturday's meetup and wonders if he will be there (!)

I think it's the last saturday I won't be able to make (until my 6 weeks in Lewisburg starts, but after that I'll be avail saturday until fall).
