    I'm still pretty crunchy, I'll learn anything I can especially if it means I can get a job making enough to support my wife and start a family
    Jeff Fritz
    @csharpfritz_twitter
    THAT is what this is all about...
    Well said - do what you need for a good gig and keep it or have better options
    Jonathan Herman
    @lantech19446
    yea I kept this job for 8yrs I got it just after the bottom fell out of the economy it's time to move on
    Jeff Fritz
    @csharpfritz_twitter
    I watched the video posted here, and saw the recommendations for editors -- Atom is nice, and now I've gotta ask since I help build it, have you tried either Visual Studio Code or Visual Studio Community?
    David Castner
    @davidjcastner
    @csharpfritz_twitter I'm always on look out for new tools. It's great to have options, so sharing the .net stack will be appreciated
    Lily Romano
    @Lilyheart
    Not for a few years. It’s on my list to try but I’ve been to focused on other learnin's
    Jonathan Herman
    @lantech19446
    heard of it but never did anything with it, pretty much only just discovered that there's a form of coding I enjoy
    David Castner
    @davidjcastner
    I'm an avid fan of Atom and github in general, but never tried visual studio
    Jeff Fritz
    @csharpfritz_twitter
    VS Code is built on the same framework as Atom - so it works on Mac and Linux too
    If the group is interested, I'd be happy to give a tour through Visual Studio Code and / or Visual Studio Community
    ... both tools are free (as in beer) and VS Code is open source
    Lily Romano
    @Lilyheart
    That would be awesome! I’ll connect with you about it later.
    Jeff Fritz
    @csharpfritz_twitter
    Sure.. I'm in the FB group and you can email me at: jeff@jeffreyfritz.com
    Jonathan Herman
    @lantech19446
    sounds great, did you go to PW jeff?
    Jeff Fritz
    @csharpfritz_twitter
    no.. I was a Methacton grad - class of '94
    Jonathan Herman
    @lantech19446
    o ok was curious because I'm originally from Flourtown so a lot of the people where you live now went to PW and I was in school with a joe fritz
    Jeff Fritz
    @csharpfritz_twitter
    not my branch of the family tree... My father, his father, and I are the only men in our Fritz family
    Jonathan Herman
    @lantech19446
    o ok
    Jeff Fritz
    @csharpfritz_twitter
    Is the group working on strictly HTML, JavaScript, and CSS or have we started looking at SCSS, LESS, and TypeScript?
    Lily Romano
    @Lilyheart
    @davidjcastner has some experience in those realms. They are on my list of things to learn (it’s a long list….). FreeCodeCamp has a saas section in Data Vis.
    David Castner
    @davidjcastner
    @csharpfritz_twitter a tour through visual studio would be fantastic! There's a map of what free code camp has to offer perhaps @Lilyheart has some links for that. But there is a range of tools taught for front end and then there is also a back end section. It is up to the participants to choose how much to learn, and we're here to encourage, keep you focused on progressing through the tutorials, and answer questions if you have any.
    Lily Romano
    @Lilyheart
    It’s one of my primary bookmarks xD https://www.freecodecamp.com/map
    Jeff Fritz
    @csharpfritz_twitter
    Looking at the map, there's a lot there that I can tour through that will be interesting
    Lily Romano
    @Lilyheart
    free code camp covers quite a bit of ground.
    Jeff Fritz
    @csharpfritz_twitter
    That's a LONG set of courses
    Lily Romano
    @Lilyheart
    Not every challenge is required for certification. You can look at in the wiki for the minimum requirements.
    David Castner
    @davidjcastner
    It's meant to be done in sections at your own pace, maybe do frontend one summer and backend the next type thing
    Jeff Fritz
    @csharpfritz_twitter
    Certifications are over-rated.
    Show me your source code on GitHub or contributions to Open-Source projects
    Lily Romano
    @Lilyheart
    On the Free Code Camp side, they do have a purpose. For some it is hard to get started on github and/or OSS. Gaining the FCC certifications shows FCC what you can do. Then you can work on Non-Profit projects which can then go in your GitHub / portfolio etc. It give people another way to show what they can do.
    Jeff Fritz
    @csharpfritz_twitter
    before you mentioned free code camp, I had never heard of it before... and I've managed the development of a large open source project.
    Not saying its not valuable, just that I hadn't heard of it
    .. but the content looks quite thorough
    Lily Romano
    @Lilyheart
    And FCC itself is OSS on GH
    Jeff Fritz
    @csharpfritz_twitter
    Looking at the repo now.... very cool
    Am I right that all training and dev is in the browser, in their online-editor
    Lily Romano
    @Lilyheart
    just the learning portion.
    Projects (at least front end) are on codepen, but you can do them locally and then post them on codepen if you end up wanting certs.
    Jeff Fritz
    @csharpfritz_twitter
    Gotcha... is the group a lot of early beginners, or a little bit along but still learning JavaScript and web dev basics?
    Jeff Fritz
    @csharpfritz_twitter
    @Lilyheart Let me know if you need help finding space for in-person meetups.. I have a few places we could meet
    Lily Romano
    @Lilyheart
    I will DEF connect with you about that.
    The group is mostly beginners but we have a few advanced people in various areas.
    Lily Romano
    @Lilyheart
    Ugh, so close to being done with intermediate algorithm scripting. I like algorithm scripting challenges but not when I need to do 50 of them back to back.
    Robert Maylie
    @rmaylie9560
    You love it.
    Lily Romano
    @Lilyheart
    here and there they are okay.
    this many in a row does my brain in
    Robert Maylie
    @rmaylie9560
    How's the section?
    rough?
    Lily Romano
    @Lilyheart
    some are okay some are boy howdy
