    Seems I need a newer pooter to use github
    Lily Romano
    @Lilyheart
    why? shouldn't. Might have to do it a long way around tho. What kind of pooter ya got?
    Robert Wilber
    @robert194w
    running xp. site says min win7
    back to the old laptop purchase discussion
    Lily Romano
    @Lilyheart
    Did you try from here? https://git-scm.com/downloads
    Robert Wilber
    @robert194w
    it tells you to download the git desktop. it won't install
    Lily Romano
    @Lilyheart
    Could do a laptop purchase. Or if you want, bring what you have by the house and have Cletus look at it. Might be able to get it updated on the cheap (heck, he might even have stuff to do it).
    Robert Wilber
    @robert194w
    I never updated my windows because none of my programs run on newer windows - support for them ended after xp.
    Lily Romano
    @Lilyheart
    He and I can still help you out on that. There are ways of making it work.
    Robert Wilber
    @robert194w
    I suppose I will have to get a laptop. back to my issue - should I get a windows unit or try to move to linux with a new machine
    oh...really? [sounding intrigued...]
    Lily Romano
    @Lilyheart
    linux vs windows: really depends on what kind of programs you NEED and which OS they are available for. Linux tend to be cheaper but depending on the distribution, might have a steeper learning curve. Windows... is a microsoft project. You know what you are gonna get.
    If you are interesting it trying to keep some of what you have, message me what you have right now and I'll get to Cletus and we can game plan.
    But if you want a new machine, by all means go for it xD
    Robert Wilber
    @robert194w
    I have a cinnamon drive installed but usually work in xp. but a laptop would be practical, especially if I plan to come to your meets.
    Lily Romano
    @Lilyheart
    true true. I do have a laptop I plan to refurb for meetups so there is a spare when needed. Thanks for reminding me xD I keep forgetting to put that on my todo list.
    Robert Wilber
    @robert194w
    I doubt I would move everything to a laptop, just because I don't want to replace all my programs to suit newer OS
    I guess a win laptop would be ok for my purposes since my older system can stay private that way
    In the meanwhile I am going thru the other parts of the code camp. Nice
    Lily Romano
    @Lilyheart
    Awesome. Honestly for what you are working on, git isn't totally necessary. Would be a nice to have but not required.
    Robert Wilber
    @robert194w
    then maybe I will hold off for now. codepen works ok [if I can ever understand what to do...]
    thanks
    Robert Marcy
    @Ryzilynt
    There is a reason we aren't (all) holding onto our commodore 64's so we can still run Wolfenstein on a floppy disk. There is a reason we aren't (all) running lotus 123. Keep up with the times Robert , anything your programs are doing on an outdated system they can still do on a new system , or it can be done better with a newer program. We fear change, but we don't have to.

    Unless you're using windoze of course in which case every successive version is shittier than the last
    Robert Marcy
    @Ryzilynt
    Yes , I hated windows 10 when it first came out. Why wouldn't they account for drivers for existing hardware I thought ? How could they be so incompetent? Drivers where eventually available , and I am coming to enjoy win 10 ... really enjoying win 10 with an SSD
    Robert Marcy
    @Ryzilynt
    Backstory; i upgraded my win 7 64 bit on my desktop when Microsoft was giving it away free. I couldn't use my printer because there where no drivers for win 10 avail( and it's a nice printer) So I rolled it back , and reverted to win 7. I still have win 7 on that device to this day ( because now win 10 isn't free). I have since purchased a win 10 laptop and I can say that windows 10 is really nice . And my existing printer now has driver support.
    I understand your unwillingness to progress though Robert , I do. Back in 98 or 99 I obtained a beta copy of windows 2000 ..and it was so Rick solid I used it for almost a decade...

    @lantech19446
    I think by 2003 or so I was already using linux
    Lily Romano
    @Lilyheart
    I kept either xp or vista, I don't remember. For nearly forever. My main machine I upgraged to 7 a few years ago and it will stay 7 for as long as I can get away with it. Not for not using the updated versions. I have 8 on the big laptop. 8 works on it as it's a touch screen. 8 is just horrible on anything else. 10 runs on the home theater pc and my surface. I use it... but I don't like it.
    Robert Marcy
    @Ryzilynt
    Yeah, back in 99 I (red hat I think) had Linux installed along side of win2000 on a dual boot box, my first pc ever , a pII 350. I played Around with the command line, installed gimp or it came with it. That was about it. Haven't been forced to use Linux for anything , so I haven't. I recently installed a virtual machine , then burned ubuntu to a disc and installed it on virtual box. I know there is a really good reason to use Linux , but I forget what it is.

    @robert194w
    Sounds like everyone is making my argument for me... Just never needed anything newer except that I couldn't run new things I wanted - and had to give up some things I still miss. If I wasn't chasing coding I probably wouldn't care to update.
    ... still miss my 49 Plymouth...
    Robert Marcy
    @Ryzilynt
    My first car was 79 Buick Regal, it was a beat-up hand me down, but it worked. Something else you may want to consider depending on the age of your OS might be security. Especially if it's internet connected. Once you pass the end of support life cycle you may begin to miss security updates.
    Robert Wilber
    @robert194w
    What's a security update? LOL.. guess I need to go laptop shopping ... Can't run newer OS on my tower, too small, too slow - will just keep it for internal housekeeping
    Lily Romano
    @Lilyheart
    @robert194w Don't forget you can always run the tower past Cletus as that's what he used to do for a living. @Ryzilynt My win 7 machine is actually a dual boot machine with ubuntu. I would like to say I'm pure linux by the time win 7 is out of it's (extended) support life cycle. I have a few years left to get everything settled.

    Hi! Anybody out there? I am baffled by these JavaScript challenges.
    Cannot find how to use function variable. Never covered anywhere. Couldn't find anything useful anywhere.
    Robert Marcy
    @Ryzilynt
    Does this help? Functions stored in variables do not need function names. They are always invoked (called) using the variable name. The function above ends with a semicolon because it is a part of an executable statement.
    I don't know anything about js yet , that's the top google return
    Robert Wilber
    @robert194w
    thx. problem is variable in function with value defined [apparently] after the code I am supposed to write. None of this was discussed inywhere in any lesson and nothing I find approaches the nesting and operation process in the challenge.
    This is one of the rearly Javaq script challenges in freecodecourse

    Spelling error...time for bed!

    @Ryzilynt
    That's called a typo , happens to the best of us. Especially when autocorrect is involved

    @robert194w I help you if you still are looking for it. Just let me know what the problem you're working on and what you've attempted to do
    Lily Romano
    @Lilyheart
    @robert194w it looks like you are on "Escape Sequences in Strings". Is that the one giving you problems? If so, you will be adding to the line that is already written for you.
