    G7470- when you say "shouldn't".... have you seen this before?
    I mean .. wiping out?
    G7470
    @G7470
    I have, but that was before WordPress really had their act together with instructions. When I first installed my version, I installed it on the site's root. Which, if you do that...bad things, lol
    Stathi
    @Ellinastathi_twitter
    hmmm... ok. I'm assuming there's a "you just screwed up your old site" guide to installing WP on their site.
    G7470
    @G7470
    (That is, if you want to keep the rest of your site together)

    @lantech19446

    Thanks for your help, G7470. I'll see what happens.

    G7470 ... if you're still there... any preference for downloading WP to your computer vs. installing it on your site's server and working on it online?... if that makes any sense.
    I'd rather work on it on the hosting server, I suppose.
    Stathi
    @Ellinastathi_twitter
    Or anyone else if you know anything about wordpress
    G7470
    @G7470
    For me, I don't really have a preference one way or another. I've done both, and didn't really find any distinct differences between them.

    Hey Caryn

    @potnoodlez
    hi
    Stathi
    @Ellinastathi_twitter
    You get automatic updates via WP if you work off your server, though, correct ?
    sorry, new to all this ... reading as I'm typing.
    G7470
    @G7470
    That's correct, so long as you have that option turned on (which it is by default)
    ccz
    @ccziriak
    @Ellinastathi_twitter - you might be able to get auto update with a local install too - let me check one of my dev accounts
    Doesn't look like it's set that way on any of mine but I think you might be able to set it in wp-config -
    I'd have to test to give a definitive answer.

    Hello All, I found the group through MeetUp. A complete coding beginner here. Going through FreeCodeCamp challenges right now and considering other classes to learn coding. Just thought I'd say hello. I'm Kim

    @potnoodlez
    Hi Kim! Nice to meet you!

    @Ellinastathi_twitter
    Ok. I'm just getting into WP - flew threw the modules recently, updating sections, copy, images, etc. Trying to set it up on my own on a URL that I have access to. I had a super coder guy helping me before, but it was already installed on the server... wpengine. Now, I'm on my own trying to see if I can get it to work without totally destroying the current html site.

    @ccziriak
    Hi @Cando2 - welcome
    Stathi
    @Ellinastathi_twitter
    translation: I learned enough to be dangerous.
    ccz
    @ccziriak
    @Ellinastathi_twitter you could install WP Migrate DB plugin and use it to clone the site to a local install
    what's your end objective?
    Cando2
    @Cando2
    Nice to meet you all too. Thank you.
    G7470
    @G7470
    Welcome @Cando2!
    Stathi
    @Ellinastathi_twitter
    My end objective... my goals... install WP - hopefully in a subfolder on my url-.. without breaking the current HTML site. Choose a theme in WP and start adding imagery and copy to sections. Figure out how to add custom CSS enough to do basic things like background:fixed and parallaxing imagess in the background. Make any sense?
    ccz
    @ccziriak
    so you're on the same domain/hosting account as the original and you want 2 separate WP installations, the existing one in webroot and new one in subdirectory? or did you want to move it?
    Stathi
    @Ellinastathi_twitter
    Same domain yes. Not sure I need 2 separate WP installs... I just want one site eventually. Once the new WP site is done I'd like to somehow flip a switch and make the WP site replace the crappy old HTML site.
    ccz
    @ccziriak
    so your existing site that you don't want to mess up is html, and not the wpengine WP site?
    G7470
    @G7470
    Hmmm
    I'm thinking a subdomain might be useful here
    Create a subdomain, install WP on the root of that (since it sounds like you want it on the root of your new site once the WP stuff is ready). This way, the "move" will be relatively easy.
    What are your thoughts on it @ccziriak?
    ccz
    @ccziriak
    subdomains can be tricky with WP (at least for me) - if I had to solve this I would probably just install WP in a new subdirectory initially, then migrate site to root directory with WP Migrate DB when ready
    Stathi
    @Ellinastathi_twitter
    CCz - yes. G7470... not sure how to do that, but it sounds good. I gotta run out for about 20 min. I'll check back asap... but if you guys can come up with any suggestions, I"m all ears. Thanks and talk in a bit! I'll check back on this thread to see where I ended up.
    G7470
    @G7470
    Interesting. I had the exact opposite problem then, lol.
    ccz
    @ccziriak
    I seem to remember having path issues with a subdomain - then used the plugin to migrate and it worked without issues. It does a search and replace on the path/urls
    G7470
    @G7470
    Weird. I did it manually, so...maybe that's why?
    ccz
    @ccziriak
    possibly - did you have to go through the database and do a manual search and replace or did the paths just work?
    G7470
    @G7470
    Had to do some database work, but not much
    ccz
    @ccziriak
    with WP Migrate DB (there's a free version) you have to do a little bit too but mainly just dropping all the tables and replacing with a database export
    from the source site
