So as I'm doing this there is a lot of specific Spectral stuff I'm thinking about, such as making position a uint rather than, say, a vec3.

Yeah, that’s not a good idea. I also wouldn’t rely on gl3n for math types.

Actually, use doubles for the sake of people who care about precision.

Well so it's not just that, it's all this other stuff that might be useful to store. Universal time the action was done, the unit who did it, etc.
