@MarkWieczorek , the only function whose purpose isn't immediately clear to me now is number_concentrated()
can we find a more fitting name for this?

I don't know: I started with get_k, changed this to k, changed this to number, then though about num_win(), and ended at number_concentrated. I am out of ideas.
for info, I still need to rework the multitaperpowerspectrum routines (I'll do that tonight). The SHWindow class makes a lot of use of the to_array and to_grid methods, so it is non-trivial to remove these two. I think that we will have to keep them for the time being. One option is to remove the to_grid routine but keep the to_array routine.
And last thing: should the next version be 4.0? Even though a lot of the changes are cosmetic, we've added a lot of new optional parameters, and 50% of the routines are not backward compatible. 4.0 would have to include the fix to STOP, which I will start working on in about two days...

how about number_of_windows_with_concentration_factors_greater_than_alpha(alpha)

number_of_windows_with_concentration_greater_than(alpha) might be enough
did we use tapers or windows ?
Maybe we should use window for a collection of tapers
so this would be taper_number_with_higher_concentration_than(alpha)
taper_number compared to number_of_tapers is a bit ambiguous, I agree...

I was joking with the 9 work method..., but that is what we want to convey....

haha ok. I thought it was actually a useful proposal!
count_tapers_with_concentration(alpha) ?
