Wooo!
That's the parts I got for my new machine a couple months ago

Artie Negron
@Munchkinator
Oct 09 2015 02:19
@SaintPeter I'm so jealous of that build.

Rex Schrader
@SaintPeter
Oct 09 2015 02:20
You hit a button up front and it turns on an LED and you can see everthing in the back.
I just got it because it was roomy, but that was an added bonus

Rex Schrader
@SaintPeter
Oct 09 2015 02:21
@Munchkinator I only update every 4 years or so, so this was my new system through the end of the decade or so.
I can run Witcher 3 at Ultra on all settings, HD, ~60FPS
Smooth as glass.
Artie Negron
@Munchkinator
Oct 09 2015 02:22
@SaintPeter Ah, nice. I just recently built my first build for around ~$850.

Rex Schrader
@SaintPeter
Oct 09 2015 02:24
It's nice for defaults
Of course, what do I do? Whenever I get an idea I just google it to see if I can cut and paste someone else's code ;)
Anyway: @Shifthawke What is your budget?
Artie Negron
@Munchkinator
Oct 09 2015 02:25
Bahaha. I heard Google is 90% of a developer's toolbox!
Serenity
@qmikew1
Oct 09 2015 02:25
you might be super lucky to be dual competent; however, most folks gravitate to either the programming aspect or design
Rex Schrader
@SaintPeter
Oct 09 2015 02:26
Who's a competent designer?
Serenity
@qmikew1
Oct 09 2015 02:26

Artie Negron
@Munchkinator
Oct 09 2015 02:26
@Shifthawke Has a monster budget. $1500 I think.
Serenity
@qmikew1
Oct 09 2015 02:26
I totally wasn't going there
Artie Negron
@Munchkinator
Oct 09 2015 02:26
Well, monster compared to me.
Allan Armstrong
@allanarmstrong
Oct 09 2015 02:26
$1500 is an insane budget
Rex Schrader
@SaintPeter
Oct 09 2015 02:26
Didja look at my buget for the system above?
I got paid for some programming work I did on the side and decided to splurge.
Artie Negron
@Munchkinator
Oct 09 2015 02:27
Yeah, @SaintPeter practically built a spaceship.
Chris
@Shifthawke
Oct 09 2015 02:27
It sure looks like a spaceship lol
Rex Schrader
@SaintPeter
Oct 09 2015 02:28
There is a video on the newegg site with this asian gal demoing the features. When I got the box in the mail I thought maybe they'd packed her inside. It is insanely huge.
Chris
@Shifthawke
Oct 09 2015 02:28
Yeah I've got about 1500 for all.
Rex Schrader
@SaintPeter
Oct 09 2015 02:28

Rex Schrader
@SaintPeter
Oct 09 2015 02:29
You could actually probably knock a few corners off my build and you'd be doing well.
Chris
@Shifthawke
Oct 09 2015 02:29
I want something better than the 745m I have.
Rex Schrader
@SaintPeter
Oct 09 2015 02:29
I don't know if you need the Haswell, though
Serenity
@qmikew1
Oct 09 2015 02:29
I've used corsair(s) too over the years.... pretty solid
Rex Schrader
@SaintPeter
Oct 09 2015 02:29
I kinda went overboard on the Z-99, Haswell, and M.2 SSD on the MoBo
I do like ASUS as a MoBo vendor
Artie Negron
@Munchkinator
Oct 09 2015 02:30
Yeah if you're not doing anything too CPU intensive, an i5 will do. It's more than capable of handling gaming.
Serenity
@qmikew1
Oct 09 2015 02:30
some of the asus lower end (which of course you can upgrade) pcs don't come with any fans ....I kid you not
Artie Negron
@Munchkinator
Oct 09 2015 02:30
15 4690k if you're looking to overclock down the road.
Chris
@Shifthawke
Oct 09 2015 02:30
Why wouldnt they have fans?
That sounds like a car with no wheels
Serenity
@qmikew1
Oct 09 2015 02:31
they have the knockouts for the fans... but no fans I actually saw this
maybe it was a manufacturer 'whoops' but I'm like wtf? (of course, fans are easy to install, but still)
the motherboards are pretty solid though
Robert Richey
@0x0936
Oct 09 2015 02:35

Oct 09 2015 02:51
My two cents - Review and decide on GPU and CPU before anything else.
Chris
@Shifthawke
Oct 09 2015 02:51
You're quite adept and would like you opinion when I present my picks
Donavin Northrup
@dnorthrupva
Oct 09 2015 02:51

agree
Donavin Northrup
@dnorthrupva
Oct 09 2015 02:51
Also I dunno your area, but check for a MicroCenter near you.
Their "CPU+Mobo" 'combo prices' are always unbeatable.
Serenity
@qmikew1
Oct 09 2015 02:51
yep, and give the dam^ thing enough power (go corsair)
bump the wattage up
Donavin Northrup
@dnorthrupva
Oct 09 2015 02:52
I am always willing to drive up to 2 hours if I have one within range. Usually a $100-$300 price drop.
Artie Negron
@Munchkinator
Oct 09 2015 02:52
Yup. Picked up my i5 4690k for $199 from MC. Can't beat that.
Serenity
@qmikew1
Oct 09 2015 02:53
wow
Chris
@Shifthawke
Oct 09 2015 02:53
How do I check for this microcenter
Serenity
@qmikew1
Oct 09 2015 02:53
I don't think they have those in nc
Donavin Northrup
@dnorthrupva
Oct 09 2015 02:53
Yea when I first found about MC I literally just wanted my stuff 'today'. And when I went I was like "ugh the Mobo is $30 more than NewEgg"(Amazon Wasn't really a thing back then), but then I saw "Pair it with the CPU to get a discount!" so I paired it with the CPU and boom - $175 discount. $210 over NewEgg
The web store might have the CPU/Mobo bundle deal now, too.
Back then, they didn't.
Chris
@Shifthawke
Oct 09 2015 02:55
I don't have one even in the state... T_T
Artie Negron
@Munchkinator
Oct 09 2015 02:55

Oct 09 2015 02:55
i5 4690k $240. You got a great deal @Munchkinator
Artie Negron
@Munchkinator
Oct 09 2015 02:55
Yeah there's only a handful in the nation.
Kenneth Black
@LawlietBlack
Oct 09 2015 02:55
closest is probably Cali
Donavin Northrup
@dnorthrupva
Oct 09 2015 02:55
mobo/CPU bundle is about all I'd buy from em. Amazon likely to beat everything else.
Serenity
@qmikew1
Oct 09 2015 02:55
did you end up driving to rockville? (I could of sworn there used to be some pc center across from tysons)
Artie Negron
@Munchkinator
Oct 09 2015 02:55
I have one 40 minutes away so that was extremely lucky of me.
Chris
@Shifthawke
Oct 09 2015 02:55
I didnt see one in state
Artie Negron
@Munchkinator
Oct 09 2015 02:56
@0x0936 Yup! I jumped on it as soon as I saw it!
Donavin Northrup
@dnorthrupva
Oct 09 2015 02:56
Once you do decide on parts https://pcpartpicker.com/ is a good place to compare prices between sites.
Serenity
@qmikew1
Oct 09 2015 02:56
no, they don't have those in nc (there's online commerce)
or, more (online) newegg
which isn't bad
Donavin Northrup
@dnorthrupva
Oct 09 2015 02:57
But alas, 2300 is here so I must close down the office! I will talk to you guys later on when I'm home.

Donavin Northrup
@dnorthrupva
Oct 09 2015 16:27
@qmikew1 Same drive? What cho talkin’ about?!
Commute?
Look at this case
Donavin Northrup
@dnorthrupva
Oct 09 2015 18:00
Decent air-intake, easy remote bay - Been awhile since I've seen a case have a top-mounted PSU spot, haha.
Chris
@Shifthawke
Oct 09 2015 18:01
What do you mean? I know pretty much nothing when it comes to hardware
I've changed power source, installed ram, and put in a new harddrive before
But the parts were given to me by a BB associate
Donavin Northrup
@dnorthrupva
Oct 09 2015 18:01
It isn't anything major. It's just your power supply (huge metal block) is mounted at the top of the case.
They've been putting them at the bottom for 3-4 years now. Doesn't really effect you at all.
Chris
@Shifthawke
Oct 09 2015 18:02
Really? My last one was at the top. Wouldn't it be better at the top since heat rises? Don't they bring a lot of heat?
Donavin Northrup
@dnorthrupva
Oct 09 2015 18:02
It's more-so for weight disbursement. PSU doesn't generate much heat, and since it has a push-pull system of it's own, it actually handles it's own heat.
They do it so it's better for cable management.
Serenity
@qmikew1
Oct 09 2015 18:03
and most PSUs have monster fans of their own (at least corsair)
Donavin Northrup
@dnorthrupva
Oct 09 2015 18:04
Yep.
Almost all of 'em come with a fan on top (or bottom, respectively) and a fan on the 'outside'. One pulls, other pushes. So it cools itself, and can withdraw some of the heat of the PC as well.
Chris

Oh so cord management. Better on top then?
Donavin Northrup
@dnorthrupva
Oct 09 2015 18:07
Better on bottom for cable management. But honestly, it isn't a big deal. I have no preference about top or bottom.
I was just making a comment.
0 impact to performance.
Chris
@Shifthawke
Oct 09 2015 18:07
-resisted the urge to make bottom or top joke-
Donavin Northrup
@dnorthrupva
Oct 09 2015 18:07
I thought the same thing haha
Chris
@Shifthawke
Oct 09 2015 18:08
Someone said something about the PSU and their cables being a certain kind that makes it neater or something?
@dnorthrupva Glad Im not the only one.
lol
Donavin Northrup
@dnorthrupva
Oct 09 2015 18:08
Modular PSU.
Modular PSU means if you're not using a cord, you can unplug it.
They're definitely convenient, I'd recommend one.
Less cords = Less clutter = More air flow.
Chris
@Shifthawke
Oct 09 2015 18:09
Why would you unplug it?
Donavin Northrup
@dnorthrupva
Oct 09 2015 18:09
Anti-Static netting around cords is pretty typical, also.
For instance if my PSU supports 4 video cards. But I only use 1 (or 2). Why have 8 PCI-E cords plugged in?
I'd unplug the 4 unused ones.
Chris
@Shifthawke
Oct 09 2015 18:09
Oh!
That makes sense.
Donavin Northrup
@dnorthrupva
Oct 09 2015 18:09
Yea, modular PSUs are beast.
Serenity
@qmikew1
Oct 09 2015 18:09
PSUs come with their own cable management stuff (internal by virtue that you have to plug into lots of stuff) the cord that goes from wall to PSU also, can be unplugged from box
Chris
@Shifthawke
Oct 09 2015 18:09
Since you're here can I ask you a question about graphics cards?
Donavin Northrup
@dnorthrupva
Oct 09 2015 18:09
Sure, GPUs are my love.
Chris
@Shifthawke
Oct 09 2015 18:10
Ok, I want to run two monitors
Donavin Northrup
@dnorthrupva
Oct 09 2015 18:10
So 3GB is the minimum memory you'll want to do.
Chris
@Shifthawke
Oct 09 2015 18:10
Like one playing skyrim and the other having a web page open

1080P?
Chris
@Shifthawke
Oct 09 2015 18:10
-nods-
Donavin Northrup
@dnorthrupva
Oct 09 2015 18:10
Yea, so mostly just make sure to get a 3GB model.
The rule of thumb is 2GB minimum, then increase by 1GB PER monitor.
Serenity
@qmikew1
Oct 09 2015 18:10
what kind of video beast are you envisioning again?
Chris
@Shifthawke
Oct 09 2015 18:10
Someone said you have to have two separate graphics cards?
Donavin Northrup
@dnorthrupva
Oct 09 2015 18:10
There is A LOT of exceptions to this, but it's a good rule of thumb.
Chris
@Shifthawke
Oct 09 2015 18:11
Oh.
Donavin Northrup

Donavin Northrup
@dnorthrupva
Oct 09 2015 18:11
You do need multiple connections - But most video cards have 1 or 2 DVI, and and HDMI port.
I have 3 monitors, and a TV hooked up to my PC. Haha
My wife envies my setup.
Chris
@Shifthawke
Oct 09 2015 18:11
I have a cable on stand by to plug up my laptop to my tv lol
Donavin Northrup
@dnorthrupva
Oct 09 2015 18:11
2 26" monitors, a 28" 4K monitor (The main one) then a generic 42" TV mounted above my desk ont he wall.
Chris
@Shifthawke
Oct 09 2015 18:12
So the graphics card needs to have the first plug up for the single monitor and at least one extra?
Donavin Northrup
@dnorthrupva
Oct 09 2015 18:12
Basically when you look at video cards just make sure it has at least 2DVI, or 1 HDMI, 1 DVI etc.
Chris
@Shifthawke
Oct 09 2015 18:12
I need a bigger tv....
Donavin Northrup
@dnorthrupva
Oct 09 2015 18:12
Yea, which almost all do.
It isn't something you'll have to research.
Chris

Donavin Northrup
@dnorthrupva
Oct 09 2015 18:13
Just run it by me before you finalize it.
I have built more gaming PCs than I can remember
Chris
@Shifthawke
Oct 09 2015 18:13
I will. I'm going to get everything together complete with links before I purchase anything and just drop it here.
It definitely has to be a gaming pc
Donavin Northrup

pcpartpicker has a newer feature where you can save your build, I believe.

Oct 09 2015 18:14
When you start looking into CPU/CPU check out http://www.videocardbenchmark.net/ (CPU link at the top).
It's a generic benchmark but it really helps decide 'Is the $300 more video card worth it?'
GPU/CPU* Not CPU/CPU
Chris
@Shifthawke
Oct 09 2015 18:15
Lol I need this lol
Donavin Northrup
@dnorthrupva
Oct 09 2015 18:15
I currently run a 780 Ti (I run 2 of them) but I bought it back when it was $1,000.
I've yet to have an issue running any game on ultra.
So don't think your video card HAS to be $700.
Chris
@Shifthawke
Oct 09 2015 18:15
I hope not @_@ I need two monitors
My budget is only 1500
Donavin Northrup
@dnorthrupva
Oct 09 2015 18:16
Sadly it isn't easy to find anymore.
It was over-clocked to a safe standard out of the box, and has a button you can press to force it to sit at over-clock limits.
So when FFXIV came out and wasn't optimized, I'd press it to run at 90FPS @ 4K
Chris
@Shifthawke
Oct 09 2015 18:17
LOL
I remember with arkham knight came out
Set to 30FPS.
Donavin Northrup
@dnorthrupva
Oct 09 2015 18:17
Monitors are pretty cheap. My recommendation - Don't try to find 2 of the same.

Donavin Northrup
@dnorthrupva
Oct 09 2015 18:17
If you're alloting $400 to 2 monitors.
use $250 for the 'gaming' one, $150 for the 'second' one.
Make sense, right?
Chris
@Shifthawke
Oct 09 2015 18:18
Yes, it's a good idea actually
One as the main and the other as a secondary use
Donavin Northrup
@dnorthrupva
Oct 09 2015 18:18
Exactly.
You don't need a 60M:1 ratio on your 'video/website' monitor.
But you would like it on your gaming one.
Chris
@Shifthawke
Oct 09 2015 18:18
Yes I would.
This is so exciting
Maybe I'm weird
Donavin Northrup
@dnorthrupva
Oct 09 2015 18:18
I'm debating ordering a new monitor soon but the one I want run $700 haha
Nah, I always get antsy when it's new PC time.
Which it's almost time (Been 2 years. Too long)
Chris
@Shifthawke
Oct 09 2015 18:19

Chris

Oct 09 2015 18:19
Yesh.
Im going to buy a bunch of pc games just to mod and play on there
Donavin Northrup
@dnorthrupva
Oct 09 2015 18:19
I built this PC for FFXIV, and when I compare my original PC to new one, it was crazy.
I made a little Excel sheet of benchmark comparisons of each piece upgrade. Haha
Chris
@Shifthawke
Oct 09 2015 18:21
I cant wait to buy FFXIV for pc
I currently have it on ps3

Chris
@Shifthawke
Oct 09 2015 18:22
Just realized the last case only has 2.0 USB
Donavin Northrup
@dnorthrupva
Oct 09 2015 18:22
That's not that unusual. Your CPU will have the 3.0
Specific things sky-rocket the price of cases.
4 front-USB. Front 3.0 CPUs. Lighting.
Cases I never care much about. I'm all about that CPU/GPU
Chris
@Shifthawke
Oct 09 2015 18:24
Is the USB determined by the shell or the CPU?
Donavin Northrup
@dnorthrupva
Oct 09 2015 18:25
Both, actually. So the way it works is your case has a 'cord' to plug into a spot on your motherboard. The motherboard CAN be "3.0" for that port, but if the cable leading to the front port is still a 2.0 cable - It'll be down-throttled to 2.0
Make sense?
And the cord isn't 'switchable' without modifying the case.
Chris
@Shifthawke
Oct 09 2015 18:27
Yes.
So how would you get it to 3.0?
Does it involve a flat head and a hammer?
Donavin Northrup
@dnorthrupva
Oct 09 2015 18:29
Haha, SOME cases it is as simple as a screw driver. You'd buy a '3.0-3.0 adapter' and replace it.
Or you'd buy a case with a 3.0 in front.
Give me a moment, I'll find you a case I'd use. You can tell me what you don't like about it,.
Chris
@Shifthawke
Oct 09 2015 18:29
KK
Does it have a seethrough side panel?lol
It varies I went to activetly find you one haha.
They change it price A LOT.
So I don't bother keeping a stash of info on hand.
For instance my case was $130 when I bought it.
It's $390 now.
Chris
@Shifthawke
Oct 09 2015 18:32
WOW!
for a case?
Donavin Northrup
@dnorthrupva
Oct 09 2015 18:32
Yea, haha.
They can get hella expensive.
Only thing I dislike about THAT case is the side window doesn't have a fan. But 2 on top, one in front makes up for it.
Chris
@Shifthawke
Oct 09 2015 18:33
I for some reason didnt think cases came with the fans lol
Donavin Northrup
@dnorthrupva
Oct 09 2015 18:33
Some people dislike side panel having a fan because it -does- disrupt proper push-pull flow, but it's nice to blow air on the GPU.
Some do, some don't. A lot just come with the front-one.
Others you have to buy, and just match the sizes they have.
But like I said, I try to go as cheap as I can with my case, without missing out on features.
So that case, I like,.
Mostly because Im still in love with the blue/black
Donavin Northrup
@dnorthrupva
Oct 09 2015 18:36
I'm confused because your link says it's a mid-tower, but this isn't.
It's too small.
Let me see why
The specs aren't matching the picture, haha.
Ah I see why.
So that case is interesting. However, I think it's going to be a bit small for bigger video cards. Let me find the dimensions for the 780(for example) to see if it's fit

Ahh I was right.

Our GRID+ (sold separately) ensures that fan control is not missed despite the removal of the front drive bays

That's why the picture looks so weird.

I wondered why it had a radiator.
I definitely like how clean it looks.
Chris
@Shifthawke
Oct 09 2015 18:40
Dammit.
What does that all mean? Mid tower
Donavin Northrup
@dnorthrupva
Oct 09 2015 18:40
Basically motherboards have 'classifications'. It's how they're able to fit into different cases.
ATX means it's big and screws are in specific spots.
Mini-ATX means 'mini' and they're in specific spots.
Etc
Chris
@Shifthawke
Oct 09 2015 18:41
Ohhhh
-scribbles furiously in notebook-
Donavin Northrup
@dnorthrupva
Oct 09 2015 18:42
So the case it goes in, has to be 'ATX Compatable'

So as for the case you linked, I don't care for it. I can find you one that is blue/black if that's your ideal.

Or of course you could go with that case. I just prefer bigger cases.

Bigger = more air = more cooling + more parts.
Chris
@Shifthawke
Oct 09 2015 18:43
I want one with the open side panel
I'd like the color abstratcs
Blue is just my favorite
Donavin Northrup
@dnorthrupva
Oct 09 2015 18:43
I'm the same way.
But what I do.
Is get FANs with LEDs.
So the case is 'black' but all the fans are blue LED.
Chris
@Shifthawke
Oct 09 2015 18:44
The link doesnt work.
T_T
Donavin Northrup

I was just showing you the lighting effect!
That is do-able on every case.
Chris
@Shifthawke
Oct 09 2015 18:51
Oh is it? And Leds don't generate a lot of heat right?
Donavin Northrup
@dnorthrupva
Oct 09 2015 18:52
Not really, especially in the FANs.
It's people who install LEDs -not- meant for PCs that cause isuses.
But LED-Fans have been around for decades. $10-$20 depending on size.
Chris
@Shifthawke
Oct 09 2015 18:53
That sounds like a lot of fans in a pc lol
Donavin Northrup
@dnorthrupva
Oct 09 2015 18:53
You'll typically have 4-5 fans in your PC. Depending on your case.
I have 2 up top, one massive one in front, 1 on side, 1 in back.
Chris
@Shifthawke
Oct 09 2015 18:54
I'm going to need a giant case
Donavin Northrup
@dnorthrupva
Oct 09 2015 18:57
Well the case dictates the amount of fans.
Max amount of fans*
Chris
@Shifthawke
