@dmarkey :
I did not try -> no compile run from me
Just wanted to be sure that you have a compatible sdk. There are some esp-open-sdk 1.2 versions around.
And don't know whether it matters but sming formally only supports up till 1.3

@vincenthome :
The answer is dependent on the version of Sming you are using.
We released 1.4.0 yesterday. If you are not using that I advise to upgrade to that.
In that release we changed to a new spiffy.
For that the answer on your question is you can build spiffy
  • run make in C:\tools\sming\Sming\spiffy folder
  • run make spiffy in C:\tools\sming\Sming folder
  • when using eclipse use the target spiffy in the smingframework project

@hreintke:
I am a Visual Studio developer, never use Eclipse before. So another silly question. How do I open the Smingframework project from eclipse?

@vincenthome you need to import project

@vincenthome : Indeed import, Sming has eclipse project files included.
If you have a "empty workspace (initial) you have to :
Go File -> Import
Select Existting projects into workspace
Enter Sming directory as root directory
Available projects will be shown, select the examples you want and smingframework
Done.
If you want to add other examples later -> Same procedure

I think you also can use Visual Studio, import as Makefile project.
If you take that route please document and submit , then it will help others too

@alonewolfx2 kitematic is constantly updated

Thanks for all the help!
FYI. yesterday I was using the tools\sming.examples eclipse desktop shortcut to build the projects BASIC_BLINK, BASIC_WIFI which doesn't need me to do any "Import". both projects are working fine. But I failed to run HttpServer_Bootstrap (I suspect it is caused by Spiffy). And this morning I start to use (i.e. import) the projects directly from the \tools\sming folder and all 3 projects runs well.
So what I have learnt is
  1. tools\sming.examples probably is not up to date. may be pointing to a wrong spiffy?
  2. for developer with visual studio background, it is not intuitive to use the File -> Import . I think the Windows Quick Start Guide should include the instructions for File -> Import

@vincenthome it’s very promising and easier than eclipse (IMHO)
@robotiko I think it is also related to virtualbox and HW virtualization

I will not start a discussion on what IDE is the best because that is a matter of taste, host environment, needed options and more.
But for me, the exciting possibility of eclipse is a fully integrated environment for multiple platforms.
One single workspace (eclipse naming for a number of projects) in which "native arduio" , "esp arduino", and "esp sming" project are living happily together, including serial connectivity to multiple devices, all managed from within the IDE.

@kireevco boot2docker is supported in win32 .. and virtualbox and HW virtualization and works .. is kitematic what doesn't work

I am playing with the HttpServer_AJAX which is using static html file / jquery.js / bootstrap.css. Can someone tell me what is the size of the TOTAL memory space that is available for these files? Wondering how many/big javascript libraries/images files can I squeeze into ESP8266?
Assuming all default settings.
