Issue #250 is probably too much to tackle at this point… it’s basically a really nice ‘Getting Started with Workbench’ Tutorial for brand new users
Brian Wylie
@brifordwylie
grumble.. tracking down a regression on one of the feature branches...
Brian Wylie
@brifordwylie
so happy… found the regression… back to adding features :)
Ankush Chadda
@iamkhush
Not sure if I'll be able to wrap up in this milestone. Moved #162 and #250 to 0.4
Brian Wylie
@brifordwylie
sounds good...
Ankush Chadda
@iamkhush
Hey, howz docker #280 going on. Wanted to get my hands dirty with it.
Brian Wylie
@brifordwylie
I haven’t looked at it very long… looks like you spin up docker.. create an instance and put commands into it… after putting commands into it (like apt-get blah…) then you test it publish it… seems kewl.. just haven’t done it yet...
Brian Wylie
@brifordwylie
okay, so I find myself reaching the conclusion that things that need a different PyPI project (like the workbench_cli) need to be a separate GitHub project… it’s just super messy otherwise… thoughts? ….
Brian Wylie
@brifordwylie
or.. I guess I could make a workbench_cli directory inside workbench that was like a little mini-project...
yeah, going to do that… just too much to have 2 separate projects
Ankush Chadda
@iamkhush
But you have already worked for a cloud based solution
where user doesnt has to install the big packages
Brian Wylie
@brifordwylie
some groups will not want to use a cloud based solution… opsec (Operational Security) means not uploading samples to a cloud server…. also learning how to do a docker module will be fun...
Ankush Chadda
@iamkhush
Ok
Brian Wylie
@brifordwylie
Ankush are you on twitter?
if so.. follow supercowpowers :)
Ankush Chadda
@iamkhush
sure :)
Brian Wylie
@brifordwylie
hey, I’m going to merge and than delete the building_report_client today… I’m going to focus on a few other issues first but than I’ll get back to this work… I think having super nice web interfaces to all the data you get from workbench will be a great feature...
Ankush Chadda
@iamkhush
But why are you deleting it? Any particular reason?
Brian Wylie
@brifordwylie
oh, just meant I would delete the branch.. not the content :)
Brian Wylie
@brifordwylie
interesting.. github now allows you to track git clones https://github.com/SuperCowPowers/workbench/graphs/traffic
Brian Wylie
@brifordwylie
posted a new video.. http://youtu.be/RxSaJuC6t1k
Brian Wylie
@brifordwylie
Alright Travis was pissing me off.. so I built a project that generates python wheels and speeds up the tests that were hitting the 10 minute timer...
Brian Wylie
@brifordwylie
Hey so it’s been a couple weeks on #280 so I’m going to assign it back to me. If you have any info/progress on it sync up with me :)
Ankush Chadda
@iamkhush
Hey
I have uploaded docker repo with workbench setup at iamkhush/workbench
Brian Wylie
@brifordwylie
nice :)
super awesome
when you get a chance do you mind capturing some of the instructions so that I can understand what you did? I haven’t done a ‘docker’ before so I’m interested in the process
Brian Wylie
@brifordwylie
I pulled the docker image.. and I think I might be running it wrong… I’m doing the following...
docker run 6beb67fd02ae workbench_server
<<< Workbench Server Version 0.3.1 >>>
Traceback (most recent call last):
...
raise ConnectionFailure(str(e))
pymongo.errors.ConnectionFailure: [Errno 111] Connection refused
this seems like a good resource (at least it showed me stuff that I had no idea about)
Brian Wylie
@brifordwylie
okay, gotta work on this today… I’ve made a repo for the docker work and added you as a dev...
Brian Wylie
@brifordwylie
Brian Wylie
@brifordwylie
Put a new dockerfile into https://github.com/SuperCowPowers/workbench-docker I think it’s fairly close going to try to finish it today
Brian Wylie
@brifordwylie
okay these guys seem to have really thought this out https://github.com/phusion/baseimage-docker they explicitly say they encourage ‘multiple commands’ containers (which workbench will need..)
Brian Wylie
@brifordwylie
okay, I actually have a working (partial) docker container https://github.com/SuperCowPowers/workbench-docker
$ docker run --rm --name workbench_demo -p 4242 supercowpowers/workbench
Brian Wylie
@brifordwylie
Hi BlackTop, you have a super interesting set of GitHub repositories… we might think about ‘joining forces’ :) @blacktop
Brian Wylie
@brifordwylie
Super stoked I got https://github.com/bombela to port ZeroRPC to zmq 4 and python 3
Brian Wylie
@brifordwylie
put up a new video on yara sigs http://youtu.be/7VAI20FrgOc
Brian Wylie
@brifordwylie
Okay, just a note to people who drop by. Workbench is a bit in ‘back-burner’ mode while I try to balance new work duties with open source fun. Please ping me if you’d like to contribute, in the mean time I’ll try to keep the build up to date and fix some of the ‘in-progress’ issues.
Brian Wylie
@brifordwylie
Random note: The workbench build is now cleaned up, so should be good, let me know if you have any issues....
Brian Wylie
@brifordwylie
0.3.4 released... fix lots of bugs/issues with python dependencies 'drift'
blacktop
@blacktop
Whoa, I never saw your message until now.
I intend to kick dev up a lot during the holiday break. Let's talk
Brian Wylie
@brifordwylie
@blacktop lol... yeah.. these 'for fun' open source projects are always falling on the bottom of the priority queue. In fact this holiday I'm going to be working on dpkt (I'm now the pypi maintainer for it). But always happy to chat with a fellow OS enthusiast. I'll keep the gitter chat window open more often... :)
Brian Wylie
@brifordwylie
okay, several small issues got fixed (modules moving/upgrading). So all tests are passing again.
