Apr 25 2015 00:49
Damnit, is everything I use developed by Lennart Poettering?
like, systemd, pulseaudio, avahi,
Matheus Magalhães de Alcantara
@demhydraz
Apr 25 2015 00:57
Ugh, @RainbowDashDC, you know your code is bad, when it compiles with a C++ compiler.. (it's C++, btw.), but also with a C compiler.
bhodgins
@bhodgins
Apr 25 2015 01:15
That's not bad at all..
they are mostly syntax compatible
Matheus Magalhães de Alcantara
@demhydraz
Apr 25 2015 01:19
hey @bhodgins, want to work on your distro? I feel motvated
bhodgins
@bhodgins
Apr 25 2015 01:20
what
Matheus Magalhães de Alcantara
@demhydraz
Apr 25 2015 01:20
your distro (tardix) that doesn't use sysw
bhodgins
@bhodgins
Apr 25 2015 01:24
is sysw causing issues?
Matheus Magalhães de Alcantara
@demhydraz
Apr 25 2015 01:25
Didn't you say you'd make one of those?
bhodgins
@bhodgins
Apr 25 2015 01:25
I was mad
lol
because systemd belongs in the gutter
:)
Matheus Magalhães de Alcantara
@demhydraz
Apr 25 2015 01:25
I like systemd.
bhodgins
@bhodgins
Apr 25 2015 01:26
by the way, you heard about debian right?
Matheus Magalhães de Alcantara
@demhydraz
Apr 25 2015 01:26
sysvinit is 2static4me.
bhodgins
@bhodgins
Apr 25 2015 01:26
yeah and most Linux devs hte it
hate*
Matheus Magalhães de Alcantara
@demhydraz
Apr 25 2015 01:26
yea, debian moved to systemd and some group of idiots forked it
bhodgins
@bhodgins
Apr 25 2015 01:26
slackware will never migrate to it
Matheus Magalhães de Alcantara
@demhydraz
Apr 25 2015 01:27
Slackware is 1293120 years old
bhodgins
@bhodgins
Apr 25 2015 01:27
every one of us in the slackware community is against it
LOL
Matheus Magalhães de Alcantara
@demhydraz
Apr 25 2015 01:27
Do I care about the slackware community? No.. Am I happy with systemd? Yes..
bam. Systemd > sysvinit.
bhodgins
@bhodgins
Apr 25 2015 01:28
slackware doesnt use either
:P
Slackware uses openrc or whatever.
Matheus Magalhães de Alcantara
@demhydraz
Apr 25 2015 01:28
the Gentoo crap?
bhodgins
@bhodgins
Apr 25 2015 01:28
which is BSD style
no.
rc.d
sysvinit is the init.d style
Matheus Magalhães de Alcantara
@demhydraz
Apr 25 2015 01:28
No, actually, sysvinit is rc.d
you're confuzzling sysv init with old-style unix init.. (init);
bhodgins
@bhodgins
Apr 25 2015 01:29
not according to the docs I've read
what do you think SYSTEM-V is?
:P
Matheus Magalhães de Alcantara
@demhydraz
Apr 25 2015 01:29
Not-so-old-style UNIX.
bhodgins
@bhodgins
Apr 25 2015 01:30
well
Matheus Magalhães de Alcantara
@demhydraz
Apr 25 2015 01:30
But let's face it. the superior operating system is, of course, Plan 9 from Bell Labs.
bhodgins
@bhodgins
Apr 25 2015 01:30
either way, if you build upon it, rc.d isnt so static
Matheus Magalhães de Alcantara
@demhydraz
Apr 25 2015 01:31
never look at my userspace code. It's for your own good.
bhodgins
@bhodgins
Apr 25 2015 01:31
OH GREAT
my gf ignored everything and now wre're locked in the bedroom
Matheus Magalhães de Alcantara
@demhydraz
Apr 25 2015 01:31
LOL!
Plan 9 from User Space.
Sort IX from Outer Space.
bhodgins
@bhodgins
Apr 25 2015 01:37
done
used an extension cord to unscrew the entire doorknob from the door
the prongs off the cable
then wedged it with one of the screws
Matheus Magalhães de Alcantara
@demhydraz
Apr 25 2015 01:41
I'm looking for a chromebook
Matheus Magalhães de Alcantara
@demhydraz
Apr 25 2015 02:25
I've done something stupid;
Jared Allard
@jaredallard
Apr 25 2015 03:12
@DemHydraz ?
Jared Allard
@jaredallard
Apr 25 2015 07:05
I literally spent 3.5 hours setting up various .zshrc tweaks and etc and now have an amazing shell setup.
bhodgins
@bhodgins
Apr 25 2015 12:46
I'm fine with the default zshrc
bhodgins
@bhodgins
Apr 25 2015 13:29
do @DemHydraz
@RainbowDashDC
I have a quiz for you guys
Matheus Magalhães de Alcantara
@demhydraz
Apr 25 2015 13:46
Good Mornin'!
@bhodgins a quiz?
bhodgins
@bhodgins
Apr 25 2015 14:07
back
sorry I was starting a fire
Matheus Magalhães de Alcantara
@demhydraz
Apr 25 2015 14:07
Wat!
bhodgins
@bhodgins
Apr 25 2015 14:07
?
Matheus Magalhães de Alcantara
@demhydraz
Apr 25 2015 14:07
sorry I was starting a fire
but nevermind that, what's the quiz?
bhodgins
@bhodgins
Apr 25 2015 14:07
It's not that cold, but it's 39 and the barn is in the shade so it is definately a bit chilly there.
and we plan to have guests there this afternoon
Matheus Magalhães de Alcantara
@demhydraz
Apr 25 2015 14:08
39 F?
bhodgins
@bhodgins
Apr 25 2015 14:08
so I chopped some wood and started a fire
yes
I'm in a t shirt, it's not a big deal, but I wouldn't want to sit in the barn all day
Matheus Magalhães de Alcantara
@demhydraz
Apr 25 2015 14:08
That's 3ºC
bhodgins
@bhodgins
Apr 25 2015 14:10
so?
Matheus Magalhães de Alcantara
@demhydraz
Apr 25 2015 14:10
it's not that cold.
bhodgins
@bhodgins
Apr 25 2015 14:10
it gets down to -40 in winter
Matheus Magalhães de Alcantara
@demhydraz
Apr 25 2015 14:10
ok that's cold.
bhodgins
@bhodgins
Apr 25 2015 14:10
@DemHydraz 39 is pretty nice
but when you have guests sitting in a sun deprived barn
39 is not veru comfortable, even for me, and I am from Maine :P
Matheus Magalhães de Alcantara
@demhydraz
Apr 25 2015 14:11
damn.
bhodgins
@bhodgins
Apr 25 2015 14:11
so the solution is, to get a fire going and bring it up to 50
lol
okay so
Im going to test your C knowlege with two questions
:D
keep in mind I'm making up these questions, so if you find a bug tell me
Matheus Magalhães de Alcantara
@demhydraz
Apr 25 2015 14:13
oh, god
:<
bhodgins
@bhodgins
Apr 25 2015 14:14
what does the following do?
Matheus Magalhães de Alcantara
@demhydraz
Apr 25 2015 14:18
nothing, it's a breakline character.
:tongue:
bhodgins
@bhodgins
Apr 25 2015 14:19
int foo[5] = {1, 2, 3, 4, 5};
int y = 2;
printf ("%d\n", ++ y [foo] );
now I'm trusting you to not run it
Matheus Magalhães de Alcantara
@demhydraz
Apr 25 2015 14:20
It prints 4.
bhodgins
@bhodgins
Apr 25 2015 14:20
Alright.
part b)
Why?
Matheus Magalhães de Alcantara
@demhydraz
Apr 25 2015 14:20
because that's the same as foo[(y++)]
bhodgins
@bhodgins
Apr 25 2015 14:20
And why is that
Matheus Magalhães de Alcantara
@demhydraz
Apr 25 2015 14:20
raisins? :p
bhodgins
@bhodgins
Apr 25 2015 14:21
think about it
What does the [] operator actually mean?
Matheus Magalhães de Alcantara
@demhydraz
Apr 25 2015 14:24
it returns a pointer to the specified array element
bhodgins
@bhodgins
Apr 25 2015 14:25
how
Matheus Magalhães de Alcantara
@demhydraz
Apr 25 2015 14:25
i dunno.
bhodgins
@bhodgins
Apr 25 2015 14:25
a[b] is shorthand for *(a + b)
which means that *(b + a) is the same
next question!
Matheus Magalhães de Alcantara
@demhydraz
Apr 25 2015 14:26
:octocat:
bhodgins
@bhodgins
Apr 25 2015 14:28
what does ((int )(0xFFFF)) do?
er old on
markup is retarded
*((int *)(0xFFFF))
what does that do
Matheus Magalhães de Alcantara
@demhydraz
Apr 25 2015 14:29
It returns the value of an int located at 0xFFFF, casting it to a pointer to integer then getting the value of that
(And it's in parenthesis to bug me.)
bhodgins
@bhodgins
Apr 25 2015 14:29
:)
okay last question!
What does the following print, and why?:
if ( -1 > 1U ) { printf("yay!"); } else { printf("darn!"); }
Matheus Magalhães de Alcantara
@demhydraz
Apr 25 2015 14:33
It prints yay, and (maybe) it's because an unsigned number can only hold a positive value?
bhodgins
@bhodgins
Apr 25 2015 14:33
it does print yay
it prints yay because -1 is a really arge number when unsigned :)
Matheus Magalhães de Alcantara
@demhydraz
Apr 25 2015 14:33
oh, yes, it flips.
bhodgins
@bhodgins
Apr 25 2015 14:33
two's compliment :D
Matheus Magalhães de Alcantara
@demhydraz
Apr 25 2015 14:37
You should work on summit with me :diamond_shape_with_a_dot_inside:
(that's a diamond_shape_with_a_dot_inside, btw)
bhodgins
@bhodgins
Apr 25 2015 14:45
what is summit
besides the name of my BBB
Matheus Magalhães de Alcantara
@demhydraz
Apr 25 2015 14:45
it's my *nix clone
(read: userspace *nix clone)
bhodgins
@bhodgins
Apr 25 2015 14:46
I think I chose a great name for my BBB
Matheus Magalhães de Alcantara
@demhydraz
Apr 25 2015 14:46
what's a bbb?
bhodgins
@bhodgins
Apr 25 2015 14:46
see it's the ipv6 / VPN gateway to the outside world at my appartment
it's a Beaglebone Black
I got Slackware on it
I ported slackware arm to it
Matheus Magalhães de Alcantara
@demhydraz
Apr 25 2015 14:47

bhodgins
@bhodgins
Apr 25 2015 14:47
`why am I insane?
Matheus Magalhães de Alcantara
@demhydraz
Apr 25 2015 14:47
Slackware ARM
bhodgins
@bhodgins
Apr 25 2015 14:47
it is VERY nice.
and extremely minimal
well, mine is
it doesn't even have ifconfig
(because iproute2 is better)
I ported FreeBSD to it once
Matheus Magalhães de Alcantara
@demhydraz
Apr 25 2015 14:52
so do you want to help me with my Uneekx clone?
bhodgins
@bhodgins
Apr 25 2015 14:53
I dunno.. I have a lot of projects..
Matheus Magalhães de Alcantara
@demhydraz
Apr 25 2015 14:58
plissssssssssssss?
bhodgins
@bhodgins
Apr 25 2015 14:59
whats it written in by the way?
Matheus Magalhães de Alcantara
@demhydraz
Apr 25 2015 15:00
C-ish C++.
demhydraz @DemHydraz just pushed @bhodgins out of the project
bhodgins
@bhodgins
Apr 25 2015 15:00
Nope.
There is one exception
Matheus Magalhães de Alcantara
@demhydraz
Apr 25 2015 15:01
features of C++ I use: overloading.
maybe later on classes. but , no rtti, no exceptions
bhodgins
@bhodgins
Apr 25 2015 15:03
The only way I will write a unix clone
is if it is in rust
Matheus Magalhães de Alcantara
@demhydraz
Apr 25 2015 15:03
in rust?
But I've already got a.. pretty much everything! i've even got a fs!
bhodgins
@bhodgins
Apr 25 2015 15:05
lol
still.
Rust is a very, vry nice language
recommended by one of the C++ standard comitte members whom I know in person himself
Matheus Magalhães de Alcantara
@demhydraz
Apr 25 2015 15:06
I don't even have rustc.
bhodgins
@bhodgins
Apr 25 2015 15:06
sooh?
Matheus Magalhães de Alcantara
@demhydraz
Apr 25 2015 15:06
But... we can do it, yes
bhodgins
@bhodgins
Apr 25 2015 15:06
I just need an excuse to learn Rust, lol
Matheus Magalhães de Alcantara
@demhydraz
Apr 25 2015 15:07
i've never used it too
bhodgins
@bhodgins
Apr 25 2015 15:07
But it has memory safety and threading etc built in and its a systems language like C
heh
wood furnace is about 700 degrees
mayve 650
it's geting there
itl be about 1000 by the end of the day
then we'll start cookin
thinking about cooking burgers on it
with that said
why not clone amiga os?
:P lolololol
Matheus Magalhães de Alcantara
@demhydraz
Apr 25 2015 15:10
Amiga? the fastest ever microkernel? :tongue:
bhodgins
@bhodgins
Apr 25 2015 15:10
lol
I kinda want to target ARM..
Matheus Magalhães de Alcantara
@demhydraz
Apr 25 2015 15:12
Rust looks weird
bhodgins
@bhodgins
Apr 25 2015 15:13
it looks amazing!
Matheus Magalhães de Alcantara
@demhydraz
Apr 25 2015 15:13
Plus porting rustc would mean porting the whole of llvm
bhodgins
@bhodgins
Apr 25 2015 15:14
I didn't think rust had an llvm frontend yet
Matheus Magalhães de Alcantara
@demhydraz
Apr 25 2015 15:14
Isn't rustc llvm?
bhodgins
@bhodgins
Apr 25 2015 15:14
hmm. maybe
you know what I could do
I can port tron paul to rust and make itr UEFI
:P
then stab it on the front of summit
wouldn't that be hilarious for a uefi boot stub
Matheus Magalhães de Alcantara
@demhydraz
Apr 25 2015 15:15
yea.
I mean, we could write platform agnostic C++ code
But porting Summit to Rust at this moment of development just means a lot of face-to-wall transactions
bhodgins
@bhodgins
Apr 25 2015 15:16
I avoid C++
mostly because C++'s OOP is no match for OOP in say Perl
but Perl is not a systems language
Matheus Magalhães de Alcantara
@demhydraz
Apr 25 2015 15:17
I like C++'s OOP. (I ain't using it anyway)
bhodgins
@bhodgins
Apr 25 2015 15:17
it's pretty primative.
even on C++11
Matheus Magalhães de Alcantara
@demhydraz
Apr 25 2015 15:17
why, it has classes
abstracts, inheritance
constructors, destructors
bhodgins
@bhodgins
Apr 25 2015 15:17
every OOP system has that
:P
Matheus Magalhães de Alcantara
@demhydraz
Apr 25 2015 15:17
methods and variables
bam
that's all I need
bhodgins
@bhodgins
Apr 25 2015 15:18
right, but the way you use them is pretty primative
and it also makes MOP hard
Matheus Magalhães de Alcantara
@demhydraz
Apr 25 2015 15:18
MOP?
bhodgins
@bhodgins
Apr 25 2015 15:18
Meta Object Protocol
you can do it in C++ but you're kind of ridiculous if you go about it that way
Matheus Magalhães de Alcantara
@demhydraz
Apr 25 2015 15:19
thefuck is that
bhodgins
@bhodgins
Apr 25 2015 15:19
Meta programming! :D
Matheus Magalhães de Alcantara
@demhydraz
Apr 25 2015 15:19
Ew
bhodgins
@bhodgins
Apr 25 2015 15:19
it's a derivation of OOP :D
Matheus Magalhães de Alcantara
@demhydraz
Apr 25 2015 15:19
I don't do drugs.
bhodgins
@bhodgins
Apr 25 2015 15:19
it's not ew, it's actually extremely nice and if optimized, very efficient
if you have a project that has a ridiculous OOP plan, MOP can actually reduce the number of lines required for the control code, and allow you to do things with the language you never dreamed possible
my game engine makes use of it
and my VM backend uses a little mop that allows you to define functions at run time then optimize them with sugar syntax.
Matheus Magalhães de Alcantara
@demhydraz
Apr 25 2015 15:22
I'm just using C++ for the basic OOP feature (Instead of everything <belongs to symbol goes here> file, everything <belongs to symbol goes here> kObject) and overloading
bhodgins
@bhodgins
Apr 25 2015 15:23
right. MOP is really useful for large projects with an API you want a lot of people to use
I wouldn't use it for something simple
Matheus Magalhães de Alcantara
@demhydraz
Apr 25 2015 15:23
Everything ∈ file? No, everything ∈ kObject.
eventually I will have kObject->asInode(); but meh
bhodgins
@bhodgins
Apr 25 2015 15:26
then it's not UNIX!
:D
By the way
did you know that FreeBSD is a direct desendant of AT&T UNIX?
BSD is technically the only real UNIX
because it was unix
Matheus Magalhães de Alcantara
@demhydraz
Apr 25 2015 15:28
I know
but Plan 9 Is cooler.
bhodgins
@bhodgins
Apr 25 2015 15:29
:)
Plan 9 has a great networking system
but other than that, it's not a huge woah to m e
Matheus Magalhães de Alcantara
@demhydraz
Apr 25 2015 15:29
rendezvous.
bhodgins
@bhodgins
Apr 25 2015 15:36
?
bhodgins
@bhodgins
Apr 25 2015 15:57
800 degrees
@DemHydraz you know what makes me sngry?
angry*
people with mouse traps.
Just get a damn cat
at least that way you're not mindlessly killing crap for no purpose
bhodgins
@bhodgins
Apr 25 2015 16:23
900 degrees
Matheus Magalhães de Alcantara
@demhydraz
Apr 25 2015 16:28
I have a :cat2:
Matheus Magalhães de Alcantara
@demhydraz
Apr 25 2015 16:34
@bhodgins ((uint16 )0xb8000+1) = (char) 'h'
Matheus Magalhães de Alcantara
@demhydraz
Apr 25 2015 17:04
So, @bhodgins, rust?
bhodgins
@bhodgins
Apr 25 2015 17:12
I just thought it'd be a neat learning experience
I tell you what I do want to do
I do want to make a UEFI tron paul in rust
for a boot loader
for myself at least if anything
Matheus Magalhães de Alcantara
@demhydraz
Apr 25 2015 17:13
good luck.
bhodgins
@bhodgins
Apr 25 2015 17:13
it's not hard.
demhydraz @DemHydraz hands off the spec; accidentally dropping it. the ground fractures.
bhodgins
@bhodgins
Apr 25 2015 17:13
Rus is easy to get working with EFI
Matheus Magalhães de Alcantara
@demhydraz
Apr 25 2015 17:13
(I'm just kidding here; but the UEFI spec is fucking gigantic)
bhodgins
@bhodgins
Apr 25 2015 17:13
that's normal
bhodgins
@bhodgins
Apr 25 2015 17:14
that's why it's called Enourmous Frigging Implementation
lol just kiddin
Matheus Magalhães de Alcantara
@demhydraz
Apr 25 2015 17:14
Unified Enourmous Fucking Implementation
But I think C is better for systems programming. over rust at least.
but hey, S::ProcessFork() that.
bhodgins
@bhodgins
Apr 25 2015 17:16
II dunno
Rust is intended to replace C
it's also safer than C
Matheus Magalhães de Alcantara
@demhydraz
Apr 25 2015 17:16
but it's syntax is so weird
bhodgins
@bhodgins
Apr 25 2015 17:17
I like C but C is scary as shit
Matheus Magalhães de Alcantara
@demhydraz
Apr 25 2015 17:17
fn myAss() {}
bhodgins
@bhodgins
Apr 25 2015 17:17
that's not that weird.
The only thing that's weird is that you're ysing camel case
:P
that's not any different than someone writing defun
Matheus Magalhães de Alcantara
@demhydraz
Apr 25 2015 17:18
do you preffer unreadablecasethatnoonecanreadatall?
Or do you preffer stupid_case?
bhodgins
@bhodgins
Apr 25 2015 17:18
LOL
underscores are proven more readable.
any day
it's a science.
Matheus Magalhães de Alcantara
@demhydraz
Apr 25 2015 17:18
I preffer ThisCase.
bhodgins
@bhodgins
Apr 25 2015 17:18
but the way you name your underscores are not the same way you name ytour title / camel case
yeah thats title case
it's so annoying
because you get idiots that do something like:
systemOutOfMemoryException
and that is just wrong
Matheus Magalhães de Alcantara
@demhydraz
Apr 25 2015 17:19
License?
bhodgins
@bhodgins
Apr 25 2015 17:19
so hard to read and annoying
Matheus Magalhães de Alcantara
@demhydraz
Apr 25 2015 17:20
I generally set errno :tongue:
bhodgins
@bhodgins
Apr 25 2015 17:20
yes and that's understandable
I was making fun of Java
lol
SorryIWantYourEyesToBleedAsYouReadThisNullPointerErrorInYourLogsException
XD
Matheus Magalhães de Alcantara
@demhydraz
Apr 25 2015 17:20
so true.,
bhodgins
@bhodgins
Apr 25 2015 17:21
you know EXACTLY what I'm talking about!
:)
Matheus Magalhães de Alcantara
@demhydraz
Apr 25 2015 17:21
bhodgins
@bhodgins
Apr 25 2015 17:21
neat

Not really, in reality it won't ever hit a point higher than any other thing on the current aftermarket. it's hard to get something into the current race of machines, HAL will most likely never be completed, nobody will write for a custom program spec but writing a compat layer will take years just to get it to run *nix programs, it's a losing bet without hundreds of people on the development team.
I get it's a good way of learning the lang.
But, it's sorta a waste :P

Branch Revamp

In the last few days, some architectural flaws in the core design of TARDIX came up.
Mainly, Lambda and the exec() calls are flawed; There is no dynamic linker; It's all very very slow.

With this in mind, I, DemHydraz, propose a new branch: next-revamp. This branch, (parent=next), will solve much of those issues. I am telling this to this committee because it WILL_ break compatibility with next (now renamed to next-legacy) programs. Much of your programs _WILL need to be redesigned.

Proposed changes:

  • [ ] Dynamic Linker
    • [ ] dlopen, dlexp, dlpriv
    • [ ] Load programs as dynlibs
    • [ ] kernel dynamic linker extensions
  • [ ] SysFS
    • [ ] kernel objects
    • [ ] process fs
  • [ ] IPC
    • [ ] pointers
    • [ ] passing pointers
      • [ ] message passing
  • [ ] Heap
    • [ ] memory protection
    • [ ] paging
      • [ ] allocating
      • [ ] deallocating
    • [ ] The great kernel-userspace barrier
Damnit, gitter
Gitter, you suck at this
Jared Allard
@jaredallard
Apr 25 2015 18:26
Will libnet need to be? It just uses require() and netd
netd uses the same and just the daemon thing.
Matheus Magalhães de Alcantara
@demhydraz
Apr 25 2015 18:26
Libnet, no, not entirely reworked
by reworked I meant replacing require calls with dlopen calls and adding a main function
(That was supposed to be _dlopen)
Jared Allard
@jaredallard
Apr 25 2015 18:27
Ohh
Well, I'll stick with next untill revamp is stable for libnet.
Matheus Magalhães de Alcantara
@demhydraz
Apr 25 2015 18:27
If you want to export symbols to programs that _dlopen() libnet you'll need to add or _dlexp(name, symbol) or a _dlspec
Can everyone here render this: - [ ] µFS?
@RainbowDashDC the default _dlspec is {pub={main}, priv={}, assume="priv"}
You can change that to priv={somePrivateFunctions}, pub={}, assume="pub"
Jared Allard
@jaredallard
Apr 25 2015 18:31
Yea, it'll be a bit until I use next-revamp.
and i'll need your help when i do, @DemHydraz.
Matheus Magalhães de Alcantara

A misc change in next-revamp is better docs so don't worry.

does anyone know the reasoning behind those "Keyboard not found! Press F1 to continue.." errors?
I mean, like, wtf ibm; u drunk?
bhodgins
@bhodgins
Apr 25 2015 19:55
@DemHydraz a long, long time ago
in earlier days of BIOS
like, BIOS wasn't very old
Matheus Magalhães de Alcantara
@demhydraz
Apr 25 2015 19:56
what conserns me is that my Enourmously Friggin Implementation STILL has KBD not found errors
(and most of the times pressing F1 works...)
bhodgins
@bhodgins
Apr 25 2015 19:58
@DemHydraz go in BIOS
turn off halt on keyboard
Matheus Magalhães de Alcantara
@demhydraz
Apr 25 2015 19:58
ye?
bhodgins
@bhodgins
Apr 25 2015 19:58
it's an option.
Matheus Magalhães de Alcantara
@demhydraz
Apr 25 2015 19:58
oh, k.
but why the fuck do we even have those errors?
like, what's the sense?
bhodgins
@bhodgins
Apr 25 2015 19:58
but either way, I believe iirc
the A20 line had something to do with the requirement of no keyboard
because the keyboard controller would be like WTF?
Matheus Magalhães de Alcantara
@demhydraz
Apr 25 2015 19:59
it'd make more sense to say "Keyboard not found! Please insert one and press F1 to continue."
not just press f1.
bhodgins
@bhodgins
Apr 25 2015 19:59
itd make more sense to ignore the lack of a keyboard.
Matheus Magalhães de Alcantara
@demhydraz
Apr 25 2015 19:59
yea.
but what use is DOS with no keyboard?
bhodgins
@bhodgins
Apr 25 2015 20:00
<DemHydras> It'd make more sense to say "Keyboard not founjd! Please insert disk one and press F1 to continue"
That's what I rea dit as first :D
Matheus Magalhães de Alcantara
@demhydraz
Apr 25 2015 20:00
oh lol
bhodgins
@bhodgins
Apr 25 2015 20:00
DOS has a use with no keyboard
maybe you're running a skulltag server
Matheus Magalhães de Alcantara
@demhydraz
Apr 25 2015 20:00
thinking about your bad life decisions?
bhodgins
@bhodgins
Apr 25 2015 20:01
but no iirc
the keyboard requirement had to do with the A20 line
when you woke the keyboard controller up on A20
it would complain that there was no keyboard
and the BIOS would be like WTF ARE YOU DOING
so you turn off halyt on keyboard errors
and boom
Matheus Magalhães de Alcantara
@demhydraz
Apr 25 2015 20:02
oh, right
bhodgins
@bhodgins
Apr 25 2015 20:02
at least that is my best guess
Matheus Magalhães de Alcantara
@demhydraz
Apr 25 2015 20:02
you ha(d/ve) to probe your kbd controller to enable a20 and go into Pmode.
bhodgins
@bhodgins
Apr 25 2015 20:02
right
there's another way to do it but A20 is so much faster

  • A offical GUI framework
  • Sysctl...?
wait nvm on the sysctl

  1. NO!
Darkbitt

Apr 25 2015 20:34
thats distro specifc

but an official gui framework?
NEVER.
Darkbitt

I'll make a GUI framework.
Matheus Magalhães de Alcantara

but not a GUI framework

Matheus Magalhães de Alcantara
@demhydraz

and the reason the drawing framework is going to be included in the kernel is because it's going to provide buffered termianls and IGR (intermediate graphics representation).

because a terminal might not be attached to a screen...
Matheus Magalhães de Alcantara
@demhydraz
Apr 25 2015 20:41
a TTY/Graphics Device/Network Grapghics Device is a buffered backend that accepts and processes IGR
Darkbitt
@Darkbitt
Apr 25 2015 20:41
I got an idea for CTK
Matheus Magalhães de Alcantara
@demhydraz
Apr 25 2015 20:41
IGR contains things such as color, char, pos, etc
It's packet-based for easy libnet integration
Darkbitt
@Darkbitt
Apr 25 2015 20:41
Maybe i'll split CTK into different "modules"
to reduce size.
bhodgins
@bhodgins
Apr 25 2015 20:42
wtf is IGR
Matheus Magalhães de Alcantara
@demhydraz
